CHAT Freezers are unavailable nationwide

I’ve been trying to get a 7 cu ft chest freezer for a month. I’ve looked at big box stores, local appliance retailers, and Craigslist. Only new freezers costing more than $2000 are available. (The ones on CL look like they were dragged a mile behind a pickup.) Absolutely nothing. One outlet had a large banner that said: “Freezers are not available due to a nationwide shortage.” Well, that’s that I guess. I thought I’d mention it.

Finally not a lurker!
Not the only shortage. I could not find alcohol pads, took me five stores before I found H2O2. Everybody had to have a mask to enter most of the stores.

Problem with freezers is that they depend on electricity which I see could go out with electric company personel getting sickl

Buy a pressure canner and start canning food, hint there’s going to be a shortage on those real quick like, you heard that here first. Canning groups I’m in saw an uptick in memberships this past week in the thousands, same with the gardening and chicken raising groups.

I pieced together a 800 watt, 800 AH solar system to run a chest freezer with. Now I need to find a bigger freezer.

Look up your local Facebook buy and sell groups. I'm still seeing used ones advertised at good prices or even free.

I think one part of the problem is that most, if not all of the regular consumer chest freezers are/were made in China. Second part of the problem, people bought the remaining inventory to be able to stock up/hoard.

That’s what a smart person would do! I told a friend last night to go buy one, so she called a local shop this morning and they delivered it 5his afternoon, now she has her call into the local meat locker for half a cow and two pigs and some broilers, she supports her elderly mother and a disabled sibling.

A good dehydrator might be easier to locate right now.
Otherwise, pickle, salt, or pressure can.
Given the home brew and baking, you can handle a pressure canner. Just follow the Blue Book guidelines.

Yeah, found this out last week via a friend. We're hoping for a new fridge next month, don't know now.

BTW, If you find someone willing to sell one at a good price . . . if you come pick it up . . .
don't think you can't
You can rent a 10' U-Haul for $19 and get the refrigerator dolly for a little more.
Freezers are very light and a refrigerator dolly will make short work of it.
On the other hand, if you aren't an INTJ, you could just call a friend.

Can and dry right now. Do not wait until your freezer goes TU. Summer heat will put the kabosh on a bunch of them and it is not a fun time to run a canner.

Those lucky enough to have the smarts to fix a freezer should try to get parts and seals now. Those really smart already did. One is none and two is one.

Same here. I’ve been scouring the buy/sell apps, Craigslist, and FB Marketplace for weeks with no luck. I asked around, and luckily one of our neighbors said he has an upright we can have for free. Better than nothing! Beef is so cheap around here that I’m going to buy a quarter cow. $1.65 a lb.

Just bought 20 cf up right from local furniture/appliance store. They sold last truckload of 120 units in 4 hours last week. Today got 20 in and I was lucky to get one. Hunted for one all day. Lowe's only had chest freezers git in today. Home Dep said closest one were 4 hours away in Redding Cal only had 1 in stock. Best buy sold out with nothing available until late June. Now to fill it up!
Need more canning jars too

Jars, lids & rings will be next.
I just ordered these...they have jars, too, but you pay shipping.

Gold Bulk Canning Lids - Regular Mouth

Gold Wide Mouth Canning Lids - Bulk 86mm

I order other things from this company, but they have free shipping if you spend 250.

SKS Bottle & Packaging - Clear Glass Jars, Clear Glass Mason Jars w/ Silver Two Piece Canning Lids

The jars price is quite reasonable if you don't need rings or flats.

Both jars are regular mouth...they didn't have any widemouth jars.

Feel free to pm me if you have questions about navigating either website, esp sks.

I think I'm going to be doing a lot of dehydrating and making jerky.

My back will not be happy with me if I do a lot of canning.

I'm also a little concerned about having more frozen meat than what can fit into a maximum cold cooler since we're going into summer. I will give that further thought. Maybe rent some space in a meat locker and let them worry about keeping a genny and fuel if there are widespread power outages this summer.

I don't know. I don't usually store a lot of meat in the summer anymore: this is the time of year I switch over to eating a lot of salads. On the other hand there's a lot of validity to getting with a few friends and splitting the cost of some bulk beef and pork in advance of potential problems this summer.

Wish a I had a working crystal ball . . .

I noticed a couple of days ago, that the smaller freezers were gone also. I thought that it
was a fluke, guess not. Last summer I purchased another 7cc and a 5 cc and they were on
sale..(hehehe) They are easy to move and only use 70-90 watts.
I think a person needs to do some long range buying, when possible.

Howdy, Folks!

I love my deep freeze almost as much as I love Missus Shimoda (it's a 9 cubic foot Whirlpool). Had it for over a decade; an integral part of the kitchen, and prepping in general.

I bought two of these for friends (two different couples) in the past 2 years at Costco:

Tax, title and license they came out to $150 each, and the nice teenagers even loaded them into my car.

Both friends were thrilled with them.

One couple who had just moved here needed some convincing - "why in the world do we need a freezer for winter time?"

[Answer - "because you live up 3 miles of really bad road that doesn't get plowed and when it thaws will turn into a foot of mud with traction like teflon. You'll be eating out of it while your dirt road dries out." They have since seen the light and thank me profusely via email every time they open it to get out goodies.]

GOTTA have a deep freeze. Sorry to read you're SOL Dennis; good luck in obtaining a freezer.

[7 cu. ft. is a really nice size, and easy to transport and locate even in a small apartment; I'd get two of these if I were in the market.]

Peace and Love,

Donald Shimoda
