What are some pictures of your dog?
This is Happy. He came to live with us on January 31, 2021. He was walking down the middle of Highway 281 in Kansas covered in fleas. He looked like a hobo in need of a meal. I stopped the truck, got out and asked him what he was doing. He walked over to me and bumped his big head into my leg as if to say, “Will you take me home?” We did and are so Happy we did.

Chester Hembree was told that his son, Lucas, who suffers from Sanfilippo syndrome, was a poor candidate for a service animal. Not to be disheartened, Chester rescued a Belgian Malinois pup and trained him to be a service dog for his little boy.

Veteran and His Loyal Dog Pass Away Within Hours Of Each Other

Screenshot-2022-04-05-223415.png

When Daniel Hove was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, family and friends rallied to help the Air Force veteran-turned-assistant fire chief navigate this difficult time. But nobody was more supportive than Daniel’s loyal dog, Gunner, an 11-year-old lab who rarely left his owner’s side.

Photos of Daniel’s final years show the loyal pooch snuggling beside his human bed in bed and curling up on his lap, despite being a 90-pound dog. No matter what happened, Gunner made sure he was never more than a few inches away.

“They were best buddies till the end,” Daniel’s daughter, Heather Nicoletti, told Kare 11. “They were hunting buddies, they went everywhere together.”

So nobody was surprised, really, that when Daniel lay lying, his loyal dog suddenly fell ill, too.

“When my dad would get agitated, the dog would be agitated, my dad was restless, the dog was restless,” his daughter said, remembering how her father and Gunner had always been in sync. “My dad was unresponsive, the dog was unresponsive. So once we saw how the dog was doing–he wasn’t moving much anymore, not doing well– we knew, it was coming.”

PHOTO: FACEBOOK/HEATHER NICOLETTI

One day, as the old dog grew increasingly listless and his arms started swelling, Heather knew it was time, sadly, to put Gunner down. “I called the vet clinic I used to work at,” she said, “they got me in right away and I rushed him up there, put him to sleep. And about an hour and a half later, my dad was gone too.”

But as distraught as she was about losing her father — a loving parent, loyal veteran, beloved community member, and a faithful mentor and friend to everyone he met — Heather took comfort in the fact that that her dad, at least, never had to say goodbye to his beloved dog. Such a separation would have been equally harrowing for Gunner, who could never bear to be far away from his best human friend.

“I had said I don’t know what’s going to be more traumatic for him,” Heather said. “To try to take him away to end–to put him to sleep– to end his suffering, or if you let him live through dad dying. I think either way it’s going to kill him. We knew they were going to go together. We just didn’t know it was going to be hours apart.”

“Gunner could not be without my dad,” Heather said. “I think he chose to go with him.”

Now they are whole healthy and inseparable.

This is Ivan, my Great Pyrenees.
main-qimg-2f37f0286411bf22328613a8d9b99c16-lq

This is pretty much how he spends 23 hours every day. And he is for the most part untrainable. He is both incredibly lazy and incredibly stubborn and is not motivated by anything. Not praise, not treats, nothing.

One day last week, we were going for our daily walk. We usually walk around 1–1/2 to 2–1/2 miles every day, depending on the weather. We had only gotten a block from the house when two pitbulls that I had never seen before came charging at us. The fist one to get to us immediately tried to bite Ivan but just got a mouthful of hair.

I took a step back and made sure Ivan had enough slack in his leash so that he could do whatever it was he needed to do to defend both himself and I. I don't think it took Ivan 5 seconds to send both of those pitbulls running for the hills. The noises he made sounded as if a demon had been unleashed.

And then we continued on our walk. And once we got home, he resumed his usual position, curled up on the couch.

Great Pyrenees dogs have been bred to be guardians. No training required. It's just in his blood.

What was the biggest warning that your cat was able to give you?
June 2015. My son Elliot is born.

From that day, my cat Juliette was not the same. She didn’t like the fact she was getting less attention.

And she let us know! She wasn’t nice with our baby and started to pee on the carpet in the basement. Always at the same spots.

How come this great cat became such a pain?

I had started to cough more often in the last couple of months. I had absolutely no explanation for it. I was running my small business from my basement.

A nurse told me it could be allergies. I never had allergies before. It seemed like allergies could start later in life. It sucked… but it is what it is, I guess. I didn’t make a big deal out of it.

In August, Juliette peed one last time in the basement. I had enough.

I decided I would remove the whole carpet during the weekend and redo the floor. I was tired of cleaning the mess every time it happened. Making the odor go away was not an easy task.

The following weekend, I started to remove the carpet… and found mold at every spot Juliette had peed in the past. It seemed like water and humidity were stuck under the floor and in the walls.

I can’t know for sure if it was her way to let me know why I was coughing so badly and why I felt so exhausted every time I tried to exercise.

Water was coming in and there was mold all over the basement.

We had to remove everything: floor, walls and ceiling. A company came with specialized equipment to decontaminate the basement. We had to redo everything inside… but also outside of the house to make sure water would not come back.

What started as a “weekend project” to stop a cat from peeing on the carpet ended up with a 6 months project that cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Since that, my health has been back to what it was before. No coughing, no exhaustion.

Thanks to Juliette for this. She unfortunately passed away a year later.

Here she is with Elliot…
main-qimg-b8d8c907c005430da7d11d7bc01638a3-lq

I’m truly grateful for the mess she made in my basement because the whole family could have suffered of permanent breathing issues…

People see how a dog carries a bundle in his teeth, it turns out that he saves a child’s life
main-qimg-2758c23fc4c9bc8351718530c6d10d7e-lq

This dog’s name is Pugh, and recently he has become the most popular and famous in Bangkok for his uniqueness and quick wit.

That morning, Pugh, according to tradition, accompanied his owner to work, and he himself went on an adventure. His path passed through one trash can, which he had to focus on. He was attracted by a strange sound coming from a small bundle.
main-qimg-aa0ab270bda364dbcea7438398273c4d-pjlq

The squeak was very much like a cat’s. The dog seized it with its teeth, after sniffing the bundle, and began to drag it home.

With the last of his strength, the dog dragged his strange find to the threshold of his home and began to bark very loudly in order to attract maximum attention to herself. A few minutes later, the owner came running to bark and at first thought that there were kittens in the bag.
main-qimg-c089235dbe015396b7e8d8aaf6ef0e29-pjlq

Inside the bag was a newborn baby, and it hardly breathed. The woman immediately wrapped the child in a warm cloth and called an ambulance. It’s scary to think about the future fate of this baby if it wasn’t for this dog. After all, he saved the most valuable thing that a person has – the life!
main-qimg-31136ec1667ca61a98d4517f0e97bd5d-pjlq

Now the baby feels much better. But the news about the heroic feat of the dog has spread throughout the district.

The mental abilities of the dog amazed even the mayor of the city and, according to his decree, an exclusive lifeguard collar was made for Pugh.

Beloved Arson Dog Hears His Final Radio Dispatch Before He Is Laid To Rest

ghklfyhjk.png

After 6 years of dedicated service, Clearwater Fire & Rescue Department had to say a tough goodbye to one of their hardest workers. With tears in their eyes, they sat next to their beloved partner as he listened to his final radio dispatch.

Quincy was a 12 year old Labrador mix that served his community for 10 years, offering his skilled nose in the search for the cause behind hundreds of fires. Responding to over 300 calls during his time with the fire department, he was a respected member of the community.

facebook/ClearwaterFireRescueDepartment/

Quincy’s story began at an adoption event at the Pet Pal Animal Shelter in St. Petersburg, when he was just 6 months old. Quincy was tucked away in the corner of his cage, frightened by the many people passing him by. He soon locked eyes with a very special little girl, and knew he had found his forever family.

Soon after the Nueberger family brought Quincy home, they knew he was made for more. He was a bit on the wild side, but he sure was smart! Employed by his local fire department, Neuberger asked if Quincy could be the next pup to receive accelerant-detection training, since their previous arson dog had just retired. The training was approved, and Quincy spent the next six months training at the Florida Canine Academy.

Quincy went on to have an incredible career working alongside his firefighting colleagues, helping to sniff out and detect the cause behind hundreds of fires.

“He’s another tool in our toolbox that we use to determine the cause of a fire. For Quincy, it only takes minutes. Sometimes, seconds.” – Neuberger

With such an incredible career behind him, the news of his serious medical issues broke the hearts of so many Floridians. After much thought from his family, they made the difficult decision to put him to sleep. They just couldn’t see him in pain any longer.

On the day they laid him to rest, the Clear Water Fire Rescue sent out his final radio dispatch, thanking him for his dedicated service. He passed in the arms of his loving family.

Sweet Corgi Approaches Sad Stranger in Airport to Comfort Him

main-qimg-00a8eab3b1d4cad8f669b352bea74f25-lq

Ever since she adopted her, a few years ago, Madison Palm is taking her beloved dog Cora, everywhere. The 8-year-old pup, a sweetheart and a blessing, is also a therapy dog. So giving her friendly nature, Palm is used with Cora to approach people everywhere they travel, but this time the dog’s intentions surprised even her owner. Palm and Cora were at the airport in Seattle, as they were traveling from their Idaho home to Alaska. All of a sudden, the sweet Cora approached a strangers who was sitting a few seats away from them. Nothing new when you travel with such an affectionate companion, but little did Palm know that her dog was actually comforting the poor man.

main-qimg-2e8bccc41f1111932370d14a3039243b-lq

“Before I could even call her she was already at his feet being loved on. I asked him if she was bothering him,” Palm told TODAY. “And with a somber face and watery eyes he said, ‘No, no. I lost my dog last night.’”

Although she always considered Cora a very special dog, Palm only then realized how gifted her pup was. The stranger Cora approached was in tears as the cute corgi was sitting there melting his heart!

Once owned by two, elderly border collies.

What’s the most clever thing your border collie does?

These two moved in.
main-qimg-0b7fcaa48516a6b66d702512b4e310e6-lq

Someone dumped them off in our old neighborhood. Their first pick, a 12 year old boy, brought them to me. His mother called the dog catcher. Then Carteret County’s kill shelter was only that, a killing place. We agreed to keep them safe. I know I had no idea it would be the best 14 years of my life.

These two used to open my neighbors doors, open their fridges, then pick what they liked. They often left things behind you’d think they would have eaten, but they were never hungry then. They once cornered an abusive home health aide, and then waited for me to deal with it. She was abusive to them and abusive to my mother. I didn’t know, but they did.

They brought home other homeless, and some not at all homeless animals. When we moved and they began eating our new house, we contacted rescue groups and fostered the neglected, the abused, the unwanted, like they once were. These two were wonderful. Their abilities with those most scared was legendary. They could rehab in months what would have taken a human years. Dogs so fearful they urinated when you looked at them, played again, learned to trust us two legged gods again. Because of these two.

They have saved me so many times, I have lost count but remain eternally grateful. I was suicidal when they first came. I have battled loss, injury, disease, depression but with these two I have always had a reason to keep going.

And now they are old. Frankie, the one with the shorter hair, was lost to us just a few months ago. She passed with grace and dignity, in my arms. She was loved to the very end and still. Johnny, now very old, suffers from dementia. Like all old mammals, his joints bother him. He still steals food and he’s still quite well fed. He’s happy, were he a human would be called pleasantly demented.

So you ask, what is the smartest thing my border collies have ever done? And I answer, they moved in.

“I can't take it to the beach for a walk because it bothers you on your vacation, you don't allow me to rent a house if I have a dog, nor can I put it on urban public transport.

However, I can take him to the rubble to look for you after an earthquake, in the forest after you got lost in the mountain and you had no map or GPS; under the snow, because you did a forbidden off-piste; in the water, because despite the red flag, you have bathed and wherever you need to, because finally, it is just a dog ... but he will find you.

Dedicated to all those who do not love”

What's the most intellectual thing your dog has ever done?

2 years ago, I was very ill with a bad form of flu (Hong Kong flu, as per my medical records).

Few days have been a blur. I was just laying in bed in and out of a kind of deep sleep. I was utterly miserable and powerless. 4th day, I remember very clearly that I opened my eyes and I saw 5 rotten, full of mud big bones perfectly aligned next to me, on my pillow.

Jack did bring me his favorite treasures, long buried, to help me heal. Or maybe he just thought they would make me happy, and bring back my will to live?

He was sitting next to my bed, patiently waiting for me to wake up and find them.

Do dogs actually care for humans, or do they get attached because they see us as their providers?

My daughter begged for a dog for about 2 years. We finally got Norman from a rescue shelter. Of course he showed unconditional love and patience with our daughter who was 9 at the time. As years went by, he became a solid listener when she struggled at school or when any of the rest of us had hard times.

Around two years ago, on what should have been his adoption birthday, our daughter fell ill and had to be rushed to the hospital. Norman had to stay with the neighbors. After nine days, our daughter died. My wife and I came home. The neighbors had dropped Norman off to be there for us. He greeted us at the door from the garage, then paused looking for our daughter. We told him that she was gone. He then went to her room and scoured the rest of the house looking for her.

Most nights he sleeps on her bed. Some of her stuffed animals are still there and he has never bothered them. He can tell when I am more emotional. Especially in the first days and weeks that followed her death. On walks, he would insist on going a little further, which was helpful to me.

Yes, his bond is more than just looking for some kibble.

“Room 8” ( 1947–1968 )
main-qimg-e1c22c2f43f8540474be7a413456b4bb-lq

“Room 8 was a neighborhood cat who wandered into a classroom in 1952 at Elysian Heights Elementary School in Echo Park, California. He lived in the school during the school year and then disappeared for the summer, returning when classes started again. This pattern continued without interruption until the mid-1960s.

News cameras would arrive at the school at the beginning of the year waiting for the cat's return; he became famous and would receive up to 100 letters a day addressed to him at the school. Eventually, he was featured in a documentary called Big Cat, Little Cat and a children's book, A Cat Called Room 8. Look magazine ran a three-page Room 8 feature by photographer Richard Hewett in November 1962, titled "Room 8: The School Cat". Leo Kottke wrote an instrumental called "Room 8" that was included in his 1971 album, Mudlark.

As he got older, Room 8 was injured in a cat fight and suffered from feline pneumonia, so a family near the school volunteered to take him in. The school's janitor would find him at the end of the school day and carry him across the street.

His obituary in the Los Angeles Times rivaled that of major political figures, running three columns with a photograph. The cat was so famous that his obituary ran in papers as far away as Hartford, Connecticut. The students raised the funds for his gravestone. He is buried at the Los Angeles Pet Memorial Park in Calabasas, California.”

Has your dog ever done something that made you think they were almost human?

My dog Buddy was unable to get up one morning. Buddy was 14 years old and had been failing for several weeks. He had soiled himself so I gently cleaned him with warm soapy water and got help to carry him to sit in the warm sun. That day (Mother’s Day 2015) was to be his last. He made it clear it was time, As moving was no longer possible.

I called and made arrangements with the vet for euthanasia.

The most adorable thing was he didn’t want me to leave his side so I had to hold his paw while we waited for our appointment. I sat under a shade tree in our backyard and held his paw for a few hours. At one point I needed to go inside and he was crying when I left his side. I quickly back tracked and I called to my husband to come hold his paw while I took a five minute break.

I returned to him and held his paw until it was time to go. Then we drove to our appointment where I held his paw until the very end.

He was a good and faithful friend always. Love you big Buddy.

Life is better with a pet IMO.

Buddy was a big lab who was strong and loved life. He was an amazing swimmer. Food, people and fetch were his passions.

As he grew older he just grew more endearing.

When I come out, I see him looking over his back at me, to make sure I’m coming. When he sees that I am, he then continues down the hallway, “leading/guarding” me on my perilous journey through the house.
