Good to hear you are safe and the fire isn’t headed your way. As a graduate of EWU and a resident of a county further north than you in CA, I wish you well this fire season. We are all on edge until late fall in this state... my parent’s home was destroyed in a wildfire 7 years ago so I understand the stress of an approaching fire.

Stay safe, SpokaneMan!

Thank you all so very much for your thoughts and prayers! We are safe. My daughter was caught in traffic on Highway 49 . So I got on the maps and had her take side roads until she cleared the traffic jam and made it back to Auburn safely. It was a long night for us all. Not exactly easy sleeping with fire creeping in your back yard. And for the record, we do reside in Auburn, CA. In fact I grew up on the Bear River where this fire started. It is looking like the investigation is gearing towards a homeless encampment on the long term Bear River Campground in Colfax, CA. It's a small town about 15 minutes north of me. Overnight, thankfully, the winds changed directions and starting blowing to the Northeast of us. It's still a very fluid situation however. Thankfully I taught them well, because the first thing both of my daughters did when they got home was update their BOB's.

I can attest to your prayers! Thank you again all! ;)
Dude, glad you all are okay.I thought I lost my competition. don't know what I do if I actually won.....

Oh believe me, you do not understand! I was worried if this went on for another day or two I would be declared the winner by default. Then what am I going to do with her? I ain't never won that easy before. And then when I got her then what? She got a mind of her own and she is like John Wayne toilet paper rough and tuff and don't take no poop off anybody. I was praying hard for his return....

Scary. Never before have we had so many fires. Most of these fires are being set intentionally. I suspect the same thing is going on in other countries as well. Possibly to force a change in the weather so they can cry about climate change. I hope your daughter is OK. And you as well.

Glad SM you and daughter are safe! PTL

We had 4 arson-set wildfires this last week in Northern ID panhandle not far from Spokane. Investigators are asking for help in finding the perps. Fortunately, ID Dept of Lands (IDL) and local FDs jumped hard and fast on the the 4 fires and kept them small. They were set at night when the likelihood of being spoted is much lower. All the smoke we have up here makes spotting a smoke plume much harder to see, especially at night. They just called back an IMT 3 mgmt team for the Trestle Creek Complex about 40 miles from me.

I am finishing up the equivalent of a Type 6 brush truck only mounted in a 1 ton HMMV trailer to help protect my friends and my property. I have foam capabilities so I can make about 2000 gallons of bubbles before having to refill the 200 gallon water tank. Another neighbor down the road bought a operational Type 4 firetruck for his place from a local department selling its older reserve trucks. Unionized fire depts up here are understaffed and don't want volunteer augmentations 'cause they won't join the union. A couple weeks ago, my small community's union dept. was mutual aid on a wildfire 10 miles away. Any fires in town would require mutual aid from other depts with at least a 10 min run with lights and siren. Was not a happy camper to learn about how this is the union plan. When you live rural in a wildland interface area, you do what you need to do. Do educate yourself about wildfire hazards, you can get in a world of hurt if you don't know how to do things safely.

I highly recommend those who do live in wildfire country to learn and apply FireWise principles to their property regardless if you're in a rural town or totally rural. It may actually give you a chance to save your property. www.firewise.org Oh BTW I have friends who brag about 20 gpm wells, which is a great flow for a rural personal well. BUT you better have a way to power that pump when the electric company cuts power to your areas to help prevent fires and protect responders from downed live wires. I like having water in tanks...lots of it especially with droughts we're having out west.

I was just coming to post the Reuter's story which was on RTE (Irish News) but it is posted already. I gather the Dixie fire is now the largest in California history, at least according to some sources.

A good way to check in and out of what is going on with the Dixie and River Fires is this lady - she's been broadcasting for 15 to 20 hours at a time and has started leaving the chat up when she's sleeping (so people can post evacuation orders).

She is very worried that the authorities are sometimes waiting too long to call for evacuations and people who follow her site say she has a real "knack" for figuring out where a fire may go next (I'm seeing that as I've been watching over the last few days).

She doesn't tolerate any "woo" on her page, but is happy to answer any question about fire or fire safety, she's a great resource. Every 24 hours the URL changes a bit, but I just went ahead and subscribed on YouTube. The current run time is live, probably for at least 5 to 8 more hours.
