Dubai Skyscraper Hotel Engulfed by Fire

On Thursday evening in Dubai, the Downtown Address skyscraper hotel became engulfed in a multi-story flame. At around 9:30 p.m. local time, the fire began to consume multiple floors of the building. Pictures and videos have sprung up all over social media depicting the fire as it grew. No fireworks have been detonated in the city yet, and so the cause of the fire is unknown.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Fire broke out in a residential building near Dubai’s massive New Year’s Eve fireworks display.

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire, which ran up at least 20 stories of the building near the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest skyscraper.

Burning debris rained down from the building as firetrucks raced to the scene. It was not immediately clear if anyone was wounded in the blaze.

I'm not sure that the pic of it engulfed isn't from the big fire in Dubai last year (or earlier this year).

ETA: it is from this fire (not last years)

Boy did that fire move fast. If correct about it starting outside as a small flame it would seem some accelerant was used. I thought they built their building out of concrete? Lilbitsnana could sure be right about last years fire. They seem to have them on a regular bases.

Pictures emerge on Twitter showing The Address Downtown Dubai hotel engulfed in flames. The building that hosts the 5-star hotel is 302 meters tall and is located not far from the New Year's Eve fireworks display.

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire, which covered at least 20 stories of the building near the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest skyscraper, AP reports.

Burning debris rained down from the building as firetrucks raced to the scene.

No injuries have yet been reported.

The hotel and residential compound has nearly 200 rooms and over 600 apartments. It isn’t clear whether the occupants have been evacuated.

Editor's note: It is not clear what caused the building fire in downtown Dubai and there have been no reports on casualties. The fire began about an hour ago, according to witnesses on social media. A fireworks display at the nearby Burj Khalifa was expected within hours to mark the new year and it's not clear if the event has been canceled. there was a vine clip or something (the ones that won't embed here) that showed it when it was (very) small, then there was an explosion and it just shot up the side of the building.

I don't think it was an accident; I vote terrorism.

Probably a PVC gas line running up to the roof.

Even tho they have money, rag heads are only a couple generations from leaving the tents & caves.

A third world $#!t-hole, with a very expensive veneer of civilization covering it.

This would be a dandy insurance scam-have fireworks next to building, then have a fire that appears to be started by the fireworks. Maybe it was and something went haywire.

Or it could be your garden variety muslim 'terrorists' at work-they do seem to have these big fires more often than the average city.

Throw in the fact of how quickly these buildings were built in Dubai and built with slave labor as well.. One has to wonder how many things were overlooked in the construction

Is this the fire I heard a short news blurb on about a half hour ago, where some woman (English-speaker) said she "saw a glow" that she thought was part of a fire in a fireplace in her room but then "pieces of the ceiling" started falling in and she "realized it was not 'normal'" -- ?

(and yes, I know she sounds totally dumb--that was why I paid little attention until I just now turned on the news and heard about what a huge disaster this has become)

I see no live link with this, and the only livelink I "do" see, (which is YouTube) has too much 'fluff" -- such as films of people walking around on the street, rather than footage of the actual fire.

I do not have cable, thus no CNN--anyone have a live link?
