Multiple authorities investigating deaths in Laurel

A large police presence has been in Laurel since the early-morning hours of Thursday.

LAUREL, Neb. – The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating a situation with multiple fatalities that occurred in Laurel early Thursday morning. The situation includes multiple scenes in the Cedar County community and is an active investigation.

The Cedar County Sheriff’s Office is also on the scene. Law enforcement appears to concentrated near the area of 3rd and Elm Street, though the perimeter extends well beyond that.

Multiple witnesses reported seeing or hearing an explosion at approximately 3:00 a.m. Officials with hazmat suits were seen walking toward the scene by the middle of Thursday morning.

Local businesses and other buildings in Laurel are reportedly on lockdown. A teacher training in Wakefield is also currently affected, with witnesses in Wakefield stating that the school there is also on lockdown.

The investigation remains active, though a number of first responders left the scene to tend to an active fire on the same street. Authorities say the fire is unrelated to the incident.

NSP will be holding a press conference at 3:30 p.m. to address the situation, according to a press release sent by NSP spokesperson Cody Thomas Thursday afternoon.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned to News Channel Nebraska for updates.

What is it with Nebraska these days? The killer at the caves in Iowa was from Nebraska, too. I'll look up the town in a minute. Sherwin, 23, of the Omaha suburb of La Vista . . . Hmmm. Something in the water over there?

He was from LaVista, (west Omaha) where the Cabelas is. Right in Shooter's neck of the woods.

Capt. Eddie: are there family feuds and drug labs around Laurel? That was a problem in S. Ohio. A lot of the shootings there relate to two families fighting for turf, a share of drug profits in the area.

In all fairness Meem, much as I hate the Huskers rural Nebraskans are just like rural Iowans, mostly good honest people. We've got a lot of close friends from Nebraska.

Not sure Meem, but it would surprise me if there were. I've only driven through it maybe a couple times. I wonder if there is a packing plant near there. Packing plants tend to attract less than desirable people.

LAUREL, Neb. —
A situation involving multiple fatalities in a northeast Nebraska town, is being investigated Thursday by state troopers, according to authorities.

An unknown number of people were found dead Thursday in two homes in Laurel, and authorities said fire was "involved" at both locations, according to the Associated Press.

According to Nebraska State Patrol, the situation involves multiple scenes and is currently an active investigation. Laurel, which is in Cedar County, is home to fewer than 1,000 people and is about 100 northwest of Omaha.

“Fire has been involved at both houses, and that’s all I know,” Thomas told the Associated Press. He said he didn’t know how many people died or the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

The state patrol is investigating if there's a connection between the two fires, Thomas told KETV NewsWatch 7.

An official with the Laurel City Hall told ABC affiliate KCAU in Sioux City that they were advised to enter a lockdown status by the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office.

A KCAU reporter at the scene said a part of West 3rd Street is blocked off with cones.

Ok listened the news briefing.
It’s weird. In my opinion.

They are being super tight lipped.
Twice, we’re asked about ongoing safety to the town.

All they would say was “if you see something or hear something out of the ordinary please call number you were given”… evaded the question each time.

Literally that's it. Reporter asked about gun fire and he would not comment. Someone asked about LEO vomiting after witnessing the scene and he would not comment
