Sam Brinton, the nonbinary ex- Energy Department nuclear waste official facing major prison time, once helped a nonprofit group craft a model school policy adopted in several states that tells schools to hide alleged gender identity or sexual orientation changes from "unaffirming" parents.
Between 2017 and 2020, Brinton was head of advocacy and government affairs at the Trevor Project, an LGBT group focused on youth suicide prevention, according to Brinton's LinkedIn. In 2019, Brinton played a role in developing a 37-page booklet titled "Model School District Policy on Suicide Prevention," which puts restrictions on how much teachers can talk to parents or guardians if their LGBT child is suicidal.
"While parents and guardians need to be informed and actively involved in decisions regarding the student’s welfare, the school mental health professional should ensure that the parents’ actions are in the best interest of the student (e.g., when a student is LGBTQ and living in an unaffirming household)," read the model, which was also published by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the American School Counselor Association, and the National Association of School Psychologists.

"In addition, our research shows that more than half of LGBTQ youth are not out to a single adult in school; these policies show LGBTQ youth, out or not, that their school is a safe place for them to learn, and that school staff are prepared to help them in times of crisis," wrote Brinton in a September 2019 press release.
Brinton, 35, was appointed in January as deputy assistant secretary for spent fuel and waste disposition at the Energy Department's Office of Nuclear Energy. The former official was charged with allegedly stealing a suitcase in September worth an estimated $2,325 and, in July, another suitcase in Las Vegas valued at $3,670, according to the DOJ .
Brinton, a biological male who identifies as nonbinary and was the first purported nonbinary person to work as a top Energy Department official, faces up to 15 years in prison. The former official oversaw a $45 million budget and 100 federal government staff members in his short time at the Energy Department.
State education departments in Arizona , Idaho, and Virginia have adopted the Trevor Project's model policy in full or partially. In addition, so have school districts in places such as Oregon, California, and New Hampshire.
In one section of the model, which is titled "Special Considerations," schools are instructed to conceal a child's sexual orientation or alleged gender identity from their parent or guardian unless the student gives consent.
"When a parent is notified of perceived suicide risk or an attempt, it is essential that the school maintain student confidentiality related to personal information such as sexual orientation or gender identity, especially when the student has not already disclosed to the parent or guardian and does not want it shared," read the model. "Information shared should be restricted to the perceived risk of suicide or facts of the attempt."
"Disclosing a student’s sexual orientation or gender identity without their explicit consent can in some cases endanger the student and at a minimum will impair the rapport developed with the professional," the model added.
The latest revelation about Brinton's past comes after Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY), chairman of the Senate GOP Conference, told the Washington Examiner on Tuesday that the Energy Department needs to investigate its "failed security clearance process" and how it vetted Brinton.
"Secretary Granholm has provided no answers to questions about the failed security clearance process," said Barrasso. "A thorough investigation of the vetting process is overdue."

We have this um.. person, Mayor Pete, and several others who apparently got their spots based on "diversity" and not much else.

The luggage thief has some serious issues and obviously is not fit for any high clearance government job. He needs help, or maybe just a good ass beating or two to get him back on the right path. A former government official who claims he is nonbinary has been ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation after avoiding jail time for a series of luggage thefts.
Samuel Brinton, until recently a deputy assistant secretary in the Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy, was able to enter an adult diversion program for the theft he carried out at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport in 2022 while still being employed by the government.
Brinton must undergo a mental health evaluation as well as fulfill other requirements, including writing a letter of apology to the person who owned the luggage that was stolen.
“The case resolved with an opportunity for diversion, which is a standard disposition in a case like this when a defendant has no felony criminal record. It gives an opportunity for the defendant to be accountable and take responsibility for the conduct, and potentially have the case dismissed if they are successful,” a spokesperson for the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office told The Epoch Times via email.
“Diversion in this case will include a mental health evaluation and following all recommendations, signing a release of information within 2 weeks of intake to allow providers to give updates of progress, performing 3 days of community work service, and writing an apology letter. And of course remain law abiding.”
Brinton was captured on video footage at the airport on Sept. 16, 2022, removing a bag owned by another person, taking off the tag, and going to a nearby hotel. After Brinton initially told police officers that did not take anything that did not belong to him, he later called airport police and said he took a bag that did not belong to him.
Brinton had faced up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
The diversion program entry means Brinton is avoiding jail time in a second case.
Brinton was also caught on camera taking luggage belonging to another person at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada, in July 2022.
Charging documents said Brinton stole items worth more than $3,670 after removing the tag on the bag and quickly leaving the airport.
Brinton faced a felony theft charge but pleaded no contest to misdemeanor theft, according to court records.
Brinton was sentenced on April 12 by Judge Ann Zimmerman to a suspended jail sentence. Brinton must pay $3,670 in restitution to the victim and “stay out of trouble,” according to the records.
A lawyer who represented Brinton did not respond to a request for comment.
Brinton departed the Department of Energy by the end of 2022, the agency told news outlets. It remains unclear whether Brinton was terminated or resigned.
Brinton was placed on administrative leave when initially facing charges. According to a document obtained by Townhall, Brinton was paid his six-figure salary while on administrative leave.
The document shows that Brinton’s access to government buildings was revoked and that Brinton’s government email and phone were suspended while on leave.
Brinton identifies as “non-binary,” with the identity being promoted on Brinton’s government profile and by Brinton in social media posts. Brinton is “a well-known advocate for LGBTQ youth,” the profile stated before being taken down.

One imagines they've found him something "less noteworthy" to do.

Part of most "diversion" means that an extra special asterisk stays by your name and if you reoffend they'll throw the book at you at your next offense, regardless of what it is.
Yeah, but this felony is the SECOND one in a period of months... the first got bargained down to a misdemeanor, "because he'd never been in trouble before"... allowing them to use the spurious "he's never been convicted of a felony " argument to let him into the diversion program. It's all bullsh!t.
