CNN Anchor Compares Iranian Terror Boss to French Resistance Leader

CNN anchor Anderson Cooper compared Qassem Soleimani, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps killed in an American airstrike on Thursday, to French president Charles de Gaulle, a leader of the French resistance against Nazi occupation during World War II.

"Soleimani is—it's difficult to convey how revered he is in Iran. Imagine the French Foreign Legion, at the height of the French empire. This guy is regarded in Iran as a completely heroic figure, personally very brave," CNN host Fareed Zakaria said.

Zakaria told Cooper the comparison is "not quite" fitting.

"Other than the Supreme Leader Khomeini and maybe the president, he looms larger in Iran than almost any other figure. He is regarded as personally incredibly brave," Zakaria said. "The troops love him, and he has been the kind of mastermind of Iran's policies in Syria, in Iraq."

Zakaria added that former Army general and CIA director David Petraeus told him Soleimani was his principle antagonist when Petraeus was fighting the Iraq War.

De Gaulle led the French resistance in World War II and then spearheaded the postwar rebuilding of the French government. He served as French president from 1959 to 1969.

An airstrike hit Soleimani's convoy near the Baghdad airport and killed the Iranian general. The strike came in the wake of escalating encounters between Iran and the United States, the latest of which saw Iranian-backed militiamen storm the U.S. embassy in Baghdad, prompting an aggressive response from the U.S. military.

They are already saying on CNN they question what Trump did and that he wasn’t taking the major picture! Hello! We cannot let those terrorists continue!

Went and topped off the blazer, got the HDER tested and ready. Rechecked the BOB's. Jittery as a cat on a hot tin roof. And our internet here (FIOS) usually runs around 595mb/sec. It's down to around 95mb/sec. Stuttering like Mel Tillis; and THAT makes me real nervous. Someone close by is using a TON of bandwidth. Guess it goes well with the body bags stored there.
And I'm looking out the window for possible liquid sunshine to go with the rain tonight.

You've got no worries tonight, but .... Ya, alert is good for forseeable future. My internet usually gets real bad during event windows but we're full speed tonight, fwiw

For those who want to see it, take out the spaces after media/. It's bad, so you're going to have to work to get it. Seriously, if you don't want to see a mutilated dead body, do not go.

It was bad. Not much left of that human - although it is not certain even of that.

Other vid shows the vehicle which apparently was hit - not much left of that either.

The intelligence/logistics/strategy of the entire hit is REMARKABLE. American technical ingenuity at its best.

And a message sent - NO TERRORIST IS SAFE. If you raise your head high enough, expect it to be cut off.

Glad Trump and our technology is on our side.

You know, that could be perceived, very quickly, as providing aid and comfort (in the way of propaganda) to the enemy, shoukd the situation change just slightly...

Bottom line... POTUS swings his balls of steel conducting a badass, surgical strike outside a public space (Baghdad International Airport)... taking out MULTIPLE targets in ONE strike!

Please pray continuously for our President and our troops!

No, I have worries tonight. The place up the road sucking bandwidth is an official bugout site. It's also apparently locked tighter than a drum right now. Charlie has made an appearance on the bikini state hit parade folks.

Brent jumps nearly $3 after U.S. air strike kills Iran, Iraq officials
January 2, 2020 / 9:15 PM / Updated 38 minutes ago

Seng Li Peng, Florence Tan

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Brent crude futures jumped close to $3 on Friday to their highest since September after a U.S. air strike killed key Iranian and Iraqi military personnel, raising concerns that escalating Middle East tensions may disrupt oil supplies.

Brent crude futures LCOc1 jumped nearly $3 to hit a high of $69.16 a barrel, the highest since September 17. The front-month Brent March contract was at $68.25 a barrel, up $2.00, or 3%, by 0258 GMT.

U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures CLc1 rose $1.76, or 2.9%, to $62.94 a barrel. Earlier, it touched $63.84 a barrel, highest since May 1.

“The supply side risks remain elevated in the Middle East and we could see tensions continue to elevate between the U.S. and Iran-backed militia in Iraq,” said Edward Moya, analyst at brokerage OANDA, in an e-mail to Reuters.

An air strike at the Baghdad International Airport early on Friday killed Iranian Major-General Qassem Soleimani, head of the elite Quds Force, and Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, an Iraqi militia spokesman told Reuters.

The Pentagon later confirmed it was a U.S. air strike that killed Soleimani.

Oil prices were also lifted by China’s central bank saying on Wednesday it was cutting the amount of cash that banks must hold in reserve, releasing around 800 billion yuan ($115 billion) in funds to shore up the slowing Chinese economy.

This came shortly after data showed China’s production continued to grow at a solid pace and business confidence shot up.

“Oil prices still have room for further upside as many analysts are still having to upgrade their demand forecasts to include a rather calm period on the trade front,” Moya said, referring to the warming trade relation between China and the United States.

“President Trump is likely to take a break on being ‘tariff man’ until we get beyond the presidential election in November.”

Statement by the Department of Defense:

At the direction of the President, the U.S. military has taken decisive clef ensive action to protect U.S. personnel abroad by killing Qasem Soleimani, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force, a U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization. General Soleimani was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region. General Soleimani and his Quds Force were responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American and coalition service members and the wounding of thousands more. He had orchestrated attacks on coalition bases in Iraq over the last several months - including the attack on December 27th - culminating in the death and wounding of additional American and Iraqi personnel. General Soleimani also approved the attacks on the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad that took place this week. This strike was aimed at deterring future Iranian attack plans. The United States will continue to take all necessary action to protect our people and our interests wherever they are around the world.

Interesting tidbit-one of the pics of the vehicles destroyed showed what type of vehicle they were driving. The vehicles were 2017-current Chevy Suburbans or Tahoes, or full size GM pickup trucks. These vehicles use an upper core support that is unique (because it's metal and not frangible like most are today, and it's a unique shape on the up side and no welds or tie bars on the ends). They were not armored, clearly.

The US' act of international terrorism, targeting & assassinating General Soleimani—THE most effective force fighting Daesh (ISIS), Al Nusrah, Al Qaeda et al—is extremely dangerous & a foolish escalation. The US bears responsibility for all consequences of its rogue adventurism.

THANK YOU! If it gets weird we'll head to Luray as a marshalling point. Then we may just head out your way if it gets any worse. Wife is DEFINITELY not going to work tomorrow; don't want her trapped at an AIE gate and a psycho uses it like a cattle chute a la CIA langley shooting in 1995.

US Mid-East bases and Israel on top alert for Iran’s reprisal
DEBKAFile
January 3 2020

Early Friday, US bases across the Middle East and Israel’s Defense Forces went on the highest level of security after Washington confirmed that a US helicopter strike at Baghdad international airport early Friday killed top Iranian commander, the IRGC Al Qods chief Gen. Qassem Soleimani. Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, head of the PMU, umbrella of pro-Iran Iraqi Shiite militias, was also killed in the raid, which struck two vehicles carrying the high-profile officials at the airport. Iran is expected to strike back for its shocking loss in the coming hours.
