Attention troops,
I was just trying to log into ebay.com, just hit enter, and a very nasty computer controlling window popped up stating I had been attacked and I could see it was downloading something to my computer!!!

I have full AVG internet protection and it did not react. I had just recently turned off Malwarebytes anti-ransom just yesterday.

Just finished a rootkit search with nothing found.

I could not take a snipping/ screen grab or I would share it.

YMMV, Good luck and Godbless.

The popup you saw was almost certainly fake, and was not actually downloading anything. It's a scare tactic to get you to download some malware disguised as an antivirus scanner. It's far more likely that you have adware hidden in your browser. Do a scan with Lavasoft ad-aware or Spybot Search and Destroy, because the regular antivirus tools will not detect adware.

Thanks for all your tips. The screen was very creepy and it did show a download in progress in the lowerleft corner of the screen.

Havent used Spybot for a long time since it slowed my old computer down too much. Will reload it now.

I have come across that quite a few times in various places on the net and it often locks up the browser so you cannot gracefully back click your way out there wothout clicking the Ok on the pop-up window. But having an Apple computer and can do a force quit on the browser and end of problem and then just check and clear my cache of anything that was put in there.

Ransomware will do that, too...

If you click ANYTHING it will take over your computer and you will have to pay a LOT to unlock it. Best thing to do when you see these type of screens is just to hit the power button...

Saved, to glorify God.
Has anyone tried to log into Paypal to PAY for an ebay purchase and found that the pop up log in box suddenly DID NOT convert your password into unreadable "dots" but instead FROZE the actual password letters and numbers on the screen, as you typed them?

THAT happened to me yesterday. I discontinued logging in and paid from another computer. I was on my ipad when that happened. I have had password letters SLOWLY convert to "dots" after a second or three before, but never before had them fail to convert to "dots". And NO, there was no option to keep them "readable", as I have also begun seeing, but never choose.

And you should be running Firefox as your browser with the NoScript and AdBlocker plugins installed. Then you can't fget infected anyway.

Ditto to all that was said above and, like Mountain stated, I will also suggest that you scan your system with the spybot software. I use it myself and you can find it for free on the net and it's pretty effective and trustworthy in my opinion.
