Clora walked over to the door and suddenly stopped. Clapping her hands sharply to get the family's attention, she reached her hand for the door and stopped.
"Don't go outside, don't go near the doors or windows, something very evil and dangerous is out there." As white as the matriarch of the clan had turned, and as frightened as her face appeared, all chatter abruptly stopped.
"We have to pray, now, we need to praise the Lord for His Grace and Mercy. We need to sing. Please, Please everyone join me."
Clora, who's faith had lit the fires of devotion in them all, with her unshakeable, undeniable love of God was asking for them to follow her example. She got down on her knees and started reciting the Twenty-Third Psalm.
One by one the family dropped to their knees, the relief and giddiness of surviving the storm forgotten as the earthquake started to shake the earth. The wind rose with the same shrieking howls, sending fright up the backbones of stalwart men that gathered wife and children close.
The darkness plunged them into confusion, and Ben stood in the center of the gathered circle and let God send him the words to pray aloud. Holding one of his children, Ben prayed the words, as he urged repentance of sins, adherence to God's commandments, and steadfast devotion.
The darkness, the blood curdling sounds of the wind and the bucking and rolling of the earth went on and on, for immeasurable minutes. Once again the lightening struck all around them, the sizzle and hiss standing the clan's hair on end. The innumerable flashes of light, making the dark inside of the house light enough to see faces.
The clan grouped together tightly, this time arms went across shoulders, hands touched two and three people as they prayed for safety from the vicious storm.
As the storm subsided, Clora looked up at the atrium glass roof showing weak sunshine and said quietly, "Praise be to thee O Lord, You have delivered us from the devil."
Brother looked at brother, and then sister. Wives looked at husbands, and at the children grouped in the center of the circle. "Ma," Ben said, "what do you mean?"
"We can go outside now and I will show you what I mean."
