Canned Cheese

I recently bought some of that canned cheese that I've heard some of you guys talk about. I made grilled cheese sandwiches and even DH thought they tasted really good.

He isn't as into prepping as I am...but thought the price wasn't that different than 8 oz. of Kraft cheese in the store. (He buys the little pkgs. of pepperjack for snacks at work.)

Now he wants me to buy a case of 36 cans.... :) Says he doesn't mind storing more of something that tastes that good.

Just wondering if anyone has tried using it any other way? Seems like I always hear about grilled cheese sandwiches....

Also....does anyone know just how long past the exp. date the product is good?

Haven't ever tried that cheese, but if it's good for cheese sandwiches, it should also be appropriate for macaroni and cheese, Welsh rarebit (cheese sauce over toast, with bacon and tomato), and probably fondue.

Thank you...those are good ideas. The cheese melts well, so any of those should be pretty easy to fix.

I shred it over scrambled eggs. Sometimes I add salsa too. Yummy. And we have a case. Been stored about 4 years. The cheese just gets better as it ages in the cans.

What brand did you buy, Jae?

Yes, what brand and where.. I would love to pick up some extra cheese for storage. I have a mixed batch of it, some in real cans (It was Kraft in the small blue can) and some in the glass jars.. so I would be into finding more of the canned stuff if its in stores around here.

I have some cheese maybe 4 or 5 years old, it's still fine. Just keep it cool.

I talked to Phyllis at Internet grocer today... she said Kraft has been making the cheese since the 40's in Australia and only recently has the FDA required a 'best by' date... basically it lasts indefinitely.

one case of 36 8 oz cans is 90.90 plus shipping.

She's still waiting to hear about the butter and should be getting it back soon.

I'm sorry...I didn't mean to ignore any questions... I'm just getting back online. :)

It is the Kraft cheese. ( I think they are 8oz cans.)

A friend emailed me a few weeks back and had been buying from a vendor on ebay. The guy is very good to work with and he gives a great price break...if you're working with him.

He quoted me a price for a case, that beat $90.00...at least before shipping.

I'll be happy to give his email, if anyone wants it. Send me a pm~

We love the cheese here, too. We've used it in grilled cheese sandwiches, and my kids like to eat it sliced with crackers. I haven't tried it with anything else, but I did try to shred it, and it worked just fine. So I can imagine using it to make cheese sauce or macaroni and cheese. Think I need to buy some more....thanks for the reminder!

I only have the powdered cheese so far. Haven't opened it as it is for emergency use only. Like in winter if there is nothing in stores and nothing in gardens. I know you are suspose to prep what you eat but this stuff is so expensive I can't prep more of it and want it there for emergency and YES we will eat it even if we don't like it as we have much experience with that ;)

I will someday add the canned cheese to my preps though as I have only heard good things about it.

I have a chicken and rice recipe around on the board somewhere I think I titled it Cheesy Chicken or something like that. It should do well with this cheese.

Also if it shreds well it should make cheese biscuits which are very nice to have around for quick protein and filling the belly when you don't have time or can't cook. Just make biscuits as normal then add the shredded cheese when the dough is mixed well. Continue with rolling and cooking except you may have to add more flour to hands or board as it is more sticky. I roll my biscuits in hand.

I think you could also make a brocoli casserole with it too. If you have the cheese the dehydrated brocoli, dehydrated onions, dehydrated celery and the rice then (sorry storm coming in and knocking me offline so will try to finish) then you will have the making of a brocoli casserole from just preps on the dry shelf and not the fridge.

I also like to put cheddar on a can of chili which I don't care for much but we keep it in preps and eat it weekly as it is cheap and lots of protein in a can.

Also there is cheese herb rice where you make sticky rice and add rehydrated herbs and a bit of piminto or jalapeno pepper or both.

The Kraft canned cheese isn't bad. Sort of a white Velveeta. It does get better as it ages though it does need a coolish temperature for best aging.

Sure wish someone would carry the Red Feather brand canned butter again! I really liked that stuff.
