This fire is about 10 miles SW of me right now. It started late yesterday afternoon, jumped the river and has grown to 4,000 acres. We have been without power since the fire started as it is near the high voltage power lines.

Update at 9:55am: CAL Fire reports that six homes have been destroyed by the Butte Fire burning in Calaveras and Amador Counties.

In Calaveras County, an “evacuation order” is in place for the Boston Yale Subdivision, from East Highway 26 to Ponderosa Way. The order also includes the areas of Easy Bird Road, Sierra Lane, Thadeous Court and Center Street. In addition, an “evacuation warning” has been issued for the entire community of Mokelumne Hill, so residents should be prepared to leave in the event that fire conditions become more severe. Evacuations centers are now set up at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds and at the San Andreas Town Hall. It is noted that the Calaveras County fairgrounds is also housing large animals and pets.

In Amador County, an “evacuation order” has been issued for Canyon View Road, Fig Tree Lane and Ponderosa Way. The American Red Cross has set up an evacuation center at the Jackson Rancheria hotel. Much of Highway 26, near the fire area, remains closed.

Update at 9am: PG&E reports that around 14,000 customers are still without electricity due to the Butte Fire burning in Amador and Calaveras Counties. The outages are spread out in Calaveras County, impacting communities like Mokelumne Hill, West Point and Railroad Flat. In Amador County, the outages are near the communities of Jackson, Pine Grove and Electra. There is no estimated restoration time.

Update at 7am: The Butte Fire burning in the counties of Amador and Calaveras has grown to 4,000 acres and it is now 20% contained, according to CAL Fire. Several homes in Mokelumne Hill, notably near Boston Yale Ranch, have been evacuated.

Original Story posted at 6am: A large wildfire that ignited near Jackson, and crossed into Calaveras County, has now burned 2,600 acres and it is 30% contained. The Butte Fire is burning in several directions, including along the Mokelumne River drainage, as well as south of Highway 26 toward the Calaveras River Drainage.

Evacuation centers are open at the Mokelumne Hill Elementary School and the San Andreas town hall. Power went out to several thousand homes yesterday, and many are still without electricity. Because of the power outages, West Point Elementary, Railroad Flat Elementary and Mokelumne Hill Elementary Schools are closed today. In addition, the Calaveras Unified School District is not running bus routes 14, 16 and 17. A larger CAL Fire Type 1 incident management team has been called in to assist the fight.

CAL Fire reports that you want to avoid the area. In Amador County, Highway 49 is closed at Electra Road and in Calaveras County, Highway 26 is closed at the Highway 49 intersection in Mokelumne Hill.

Some structures have been destroyed as a result of the fire, but it is not immediately clear how many. CAL Fire is planning to release additional information later this morning. The fire started at around 2:25pm on Wednesday.

Tracey Petersen and Tori James, MML News Reporters

Update 9:05p.m.: Cal Fire reports the Butte Fire is now 1,200 acres and remains 30% contained. Highway 26 remains closed from Highway 49 to Winton Road. Cal Fire Lisa Williams says, “There are evacuations in the Boston Yale Ranch area and the evacuation center is at the Mokelumne Hill Elementary School.”

Update 8:33 p.m.: PG&E currently reports a large amount of power outages, due to the Butte Fire in both Amador and Calaveras counties. A total of nearly 14,ooo are in the dark. Presently, there are 5,725 customers without power in the Jackson area; 4,541 in the West Point, Wilseyville and Railroad Flats areas; 3,644 in Mokelumne Hill. Due to the fire, PG&E is reporting that crews are not currently able to get to the outage repair sites so they are not able to provide any estimated times for repair.

Update 8:04 p.m.: Cal Fire now indicates that evacuations are being ordered along Highway 26 between Highway 49 and Lower Dorray Road.

Update 7:34 p.m.: Cal Fire now confirms the Butte Fire that is now burning in the Mokelumne River drainage, has jumped the river into Calaveras County — and is one and the same as the vegetation fire earlier reported in Mokelumne Hill.

The flames are reportedly now two to three miles east of Mokelumne Hill, located between that town and Glencoe. Cal Fire additionally reports that fire crews are battling very steep terrain and hot temperatures. Evacuations are being ordered through the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Department along Highway 26, from Happy Valley to Lower Dorray Road. Cal Fire spokesperson Nancy Longmore advises those living in the area to keep a close eye out and “consider evacuating sooner rather than later.”

Update: 6:56 p.m. — With regard to the Butte Fire, now burning southeast of Jackson, Butte Mountain Road is now closed and evacuations are in effect for Amador Lane, and the end of Electra and Charamuga Ranch roads, according to Cal Fire. No word yet on whether spotting from the fire is related to a vegetation fire reported in the Mokelumne Hill area where firefighters have been called.

Original Post 6:48 p.m.: Calaveras County, CA — Firefighters are heading to a vegetation fire on Highway 26 and Ponderosa Way in Mokelumne Hill.

There is no word on size or rate of spread or whether any homes are threatened.

Cal Fire spokesperson Lisa Williams reports that fire officials are trying to determine whether the blaze may have been sparked by the 160-acre Butte Fire, now burning in Amador County, southeast of Jackson. That fire is now 30 percent contained and Columbia aircraft are assisting on that incident. We will provide more updates as they are available.

The smoke is over my place right now, the sunlight is all orange but the smoke has not made to ground level here yet.

I'm a bit worried, leaving town tonight for a few days and hope nothing happens here. 2 days ago we had a fire a mile from my house on highway 50, heard and saw the Fire Boss flying around and thought something bad was near by. Was talking to the owner of one of the local gas stations yesterday and he told me it was determined to be arson. If a fire takes off here we are toast, nothing but forest and it is so dry and we have some wind.

We just had 100,000 acre fire last October, we don't need any more......put up some friends for a week along with their dog and cat since they were evacuated but luckily their home did not burn but did get within a few hundred yards.

The sun is just a reddish orange ball right now, looking really eerie outside right now.

Sierra Don, I have good friends about a mile out of Placerville, do you think the smoke is there too? I hope to find a map to see where this fire is.

Mandatory evacuations, schools closed as Butte Fire burning in California's Amador, Calaveras counties swells to 32,000 acres - @ABC10

-----------------

Butte Fire now nearly 32k acres; mandatory evacuations, schools closed in Amador County

9:05 a.m. PDT September 11, 2015

The Butte Fire swelled by Friday morning to 31,974, impacting power and resources in Amador and Calaveras counties.

Denny Boyles with PG&E said power outages have grown to 12,900 due to fire growth causing the loss of another circuit. The company said it's looking to creatively restore power to customers.

Cal Fire said it's now 10 percent containment and it's been rapidly growing since it ignited.

The fire started around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday just east of the town of Jackson. Within 24 hours the Butte Fire initially started, it had quadrupled in size to 4,000 acres by Thursday morning.

The blaze has destroyed six structures and two outbuildings; another 1,500 structures are threatened.

The fire is spreading in all directions, Cal Fire said. The terrain -- steep river drainage and volatile dry grassy oak woodland -- and the weather conditions- high heat and low humidity -- are creating dangerous fire behavior.

"Fire is unpredictable," the department said.

We evacuated yesterday afternoon, voluntarily. It was raining down white ash and black cinders. Incident command told me at 4 pm yesterday the fire was out of control and spreading every which way.

We are staying up at Kirwood for now. The smoke is reaching here today. I am just sad that my new kittens hid once they saw the carrier. I just had them fixed 2 weeks ago. They were fine with the generator noise and all the commotion packing, but once they saw the cat carriers they disappeared in the house. I left big giant bowls around the house with food and water for the three rascals. Please pray that my house doesn't burn.

According to the West Point fire chief this morning the fire is burning all around us. Most of my neighbors evacuated yesterday. I am just thankful we are safe.

Brown declares state of emergency in 50,000-acre Gold Country fire

http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-butte-fire-california-20150911-story.html

ov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency in Amador and Calaveras counties after a fast-moving wildfire exploded Friday to 50,000 acres, damaging highways and threatening 6,000 structures.

Thousands of residents were forced to flee their homes as flames moved closer to the Sierra foothill communities of Angels Camp, Westpoint, Railroad Flats and San Andreas.

Because the fire is unpredictable and extremely volatile, Cal Fire Team 1 Incident Cmdr. Phill Veneris urged residents to “stay vigilant and adhere to all evacuation orders.”

Flames, smoke shoot up from Butte fire as evacuations remain

Evacuations, school closures and road closures remain for portions of Amador and Calaveras counties, where the fast-moving Butte fire more than doubled in size overnight.

“You are advised that if you see smoke or fire approaching your community, evacuate the area immediately to a safe location,” he said in a statement.

The Butte fire started Wednesday on Butte Mountain Road, east of Jackson, and exploded this week amid triple-digit heat, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Flames destroyed six structures and two outbuildings and threatened thousands more.

As more than 1,500 firefighters worked overnight to protect homes, flames grew out of control, spreading south and west into California's Gold Country.

Steep hillsides and four years of drought, coupled with high heat, are creating extreme fire behavior, Cal Fire officials say. The Butte fire, they said, “is experiencing unprecedented fire conditions and growth.”

Thousands of people were asked to evacuate in Amador and Calaveras counties. Several roads were closed, including California 26 from Mokelumne Hill to Ridge Road.

In Amador County, the rural town of Pine Grove was evacuated. Residents in the communities of Glencoe and Wilseyville in Calaveras County were asked to leave their homes.

Evacuation centers were set up at Jackson Rancheria Hotel, San Andreas Town Hall and the Calaveras County fairgrounds.

Hot and dry conditions will continue Friday with the temperature expected to peak at 105, said meteorologist Jim Matthews of the National Weather Service in Sacramento.

But weather conditions will shift Saturday.

“The good news is we are expecting less hot weather,” he said.

Humidity will slightly increase and temperatures will gradually decrease Saturday, dropping from the low 100s to the high 90s.

By Sunday, clouds are expected to sweep over the fire area and bring temperatures down into the 80s. Matthews said cooler temperatures will roll in next, bringing needed relief for firefighters tackling the blaze.

Valley Fire: Thousands flee California blazes

From the section US & Canada

Thousands of residents have fled their homes in northern California as some 5,000 firefighters tackle wildfires.

One blaze, the Valley Fire, which started on Saturday in Lake County, north of San Francisco, has already burned 40,000 acres (16,190 hectares).

Four firefighters were injured and had to be airlifted to hospital, where they are said to be in a stable condition.

The fires across northern California are being blamed on high temperatures and years of drought.

The state spent $212m (£137m) fighting the flames in July alone, California's forestry and fire protection department spokesman Daniel Berlant told the AFP news agency.

He said more than 275 homes and other buildings had been destroyed and the Red Cross is opening emergency shelters for evacuated residents.

The small town of Middletown looked to be under threat from the Valley Fire on Sunday. Its 1,500 residents had already been ordered to evacuate.

Local media reported that the much of the town centre was ablaze.

The fire spread quickly and witnesses saw flames reach up to 200ft (60m) in the air, the local Press Democrat newspaper reports.

Further east, in Amador and Calaveras counties, around 4,000 firefighters are battling the Butte Fire, which broke out on Wednesday.

That blaze has so far destroyed around 65,000 acres (26,300 hectares) along with 86 homes and 51 outbuildings. It is only 15% contained and threatens more than 6,000 other buildings, officials say.

Further south, beyond Fresno, firefighters have been tackling the largest of the blazes, the so-called Rough Fire, which has claimed 128,800 acres (52,000 hectares) since it began in late July.

Nearly 3,000 firefighters are tackling that blaze, which is now said to be 29% contained.

They have evacuated the Kings Canyon National Park and working to protect the park's famous grove of Giant Sequoia trees.

Latest word on the ground is no one knows if the Harbon buildings are still standing (a close friend just talked to a resident) but they have burned twice and rebuilt already; that the Springs themselves can not be damaged by the fire, though I'm sure the lovely buildings and set ups could be (including that bench I used to sit on...)

UPDATE 11:20 a.m. MIDDLETOWN

For hours Saturday night into Sunday morning firefighters battled it out in Middletown, halting the fire’s push on the east side of town then over to do the same on the west side with a mixture of saves and losses. The fire seemed to be everywhere in town, said Jack Piccinini, a Santa Rosa Fire battalion chief who worked the fire line all night with several Sonoma County and Cal Fire firefighters. “We tried to save the hamburger joint. Propane tanks were shooting off left and right. We were standing there and right before our eyes a commercial building in a little strip mall across from the Chevron station” burst into flames. “We saved that. It was a good save.” But then a nearby apartment complex became engulfed in flames. “It just kept snowballing.” Then the town lost it’s water system and there was nothing in the hydrants. The crews turned to the nearby high school swimming pool and filled water tankers with that water. “That kind of saved us,” Piccinini said.

UPDATE 11 a.m. HIDDEN VALLEY LAKES

Some homes were destroyed in the gated residential community of Hidden Valley Lakes, just outside of Middletown, but Sunday morning much of the residential area remained standing. About a half dozen homes had burned along Meadow View Drive, near Fiddlers Drive. Other blocks were totally untouched. The area was evacuated Saturday night and Sunday it was devoid of residents and animals but there were numerous firefighters and several fire engines in the area watching for flare ups along the community’s perimeter.

UPDATE 10:45 a.m. MIDDLETOWN

Firefighters working in Hidden Valley Lake during the night were alerted that a wall of fire was descending on Middletown and Santa Rosa fire Battalion Chief Jack Piccinini, Monte Rio Fire Chief Steve Baxman and at least five engines rushed back to town to try to help stop it. “The fire was headed into Middletown and we had to get there ahead of it. We did. It just didn’t care that we were there,” said Piccinini. “We were doing classic, ‘go to a structure and try to save it. Go to a structure and try to save it.’” With fire virtually in numerous areas of town “we finally had to draw a line down the middle of the street” and decide which houses they could save and which would burn. “The crews did an awesome job but we couldn’t save everything we went to,” he said.

UPDATE 10:10 a.m. HARBIN HOT SPRINGS
Harbin Hot Springs, a popular clothing-optional resort northwest of Middletown, also apparently was ruined, at least in part, from the fire. Cal Fire spokesman David Shew said Sunday of Harbin: ”It’s pretty well destroyed.”

UPDATE 10 a.m. COBB

Saturday’s fire swept through the communities of Anderson Springs, Whispering Pines and Hoberg’s, all on Cobb Mountain, leaving charred ruins in its wake. Businesses in Cobb were mostly untouched but houses on either side of Highway 175 were destroyed. Downed power lines and fallen trees made the rural highway almost impassable still on Sunday. Burned-out cars were left on the shoulders and in driveways of smoldering houses. Hoberg’s Resort, a historic landmark dating back to the 1880s, was completely destroyed. Only its chimneys and foundation remain.

UPDATE 9:50 a.m. COBB

The fire, which started near the mountain community of Cobb, raced through the dry brush and overran homes before some people were alerted to evacuate, according to fire officials. Lake County deputies were going to search homes, believing they might find some bodies, said Monte Rio Fire Chief Steve Baxman, who was leading a strike team of Sonoma County firefighters battling the blaze. “It moved so fast people couldn’t get out of Cobb. They have to get cadaver dogs to go up there,” Baxman said Sunday morning.

UPDATE 9:45 a.m., MIDDLETOWN

Amidst the blackened streets of Middletown, resident Shelley Leese’s home stands like an oasis.

Her vegetable garden remains green and pumpkins are growing. Across the street, what was an apartment complex now is a charred ruin. Leese and her boyfriend were evacuated during the night from their home on the corner of Highway 175 and Barnes Street. She returned Sunday morning, unsure what she would find and was shocked to see her home intact. “We were so scared. This is everything to us. I’m really sad for our neighbors and our town.”

Be Well

may all be well
Just posting this, it is from a private e-mail message so no link but if anyone is having trouble finding a place for their horses and is evacuating; here is a ranch/location that is taking them temporarily - but you probably want to try contacting them first as they may have a limit, also to verify to make sure the poster was correct and that they do have spaces.

Friends evacuating Calistoga, Harbin, Lake County...please check in on your welfare if you can. If you need shelter, Isis Oasis will take as many 20889 Geyserville Ave., Geyserville, CA. just south of Coverdale and just north of Santa Rosa and Healdsburg... 121 to the 12.

Coerdale meaning Cloverdale propably. I have driven up and down I-5 so many times past those towns and stopped in many of them.

On TB every waking moment
This is a picture of the condition of our National Forests which is contributing to the Sierra fires. Note the brown part is not soil. It is dead forest killed by over-stocking, drought stress and bug kill.
