According to the article at the Washington Post, the Russian Defense Ministry lodged a formal protest with the British Defense Attaché in Moscow for the "grave violation". In that protest, the Russians make the claim that they fired warning shots and dropped bombs in the path.

There is no reason to doubt when the "shooter", so to speak, admits to shooting.

However, the British say it did not happen. Nope. Nothing to see here. Oh sure, the Ruskies were were kind of over there having a training exercise. We could hear some popping and such and a nice air show with Migs flying by. But nothing happened. We was innocent. Just passing through da hood we din't violate any of dem white girls.

Innocent and sincere.

Summary:
Yes the British violated.
Yes the Russians fired some warning shots.
Yes the British altered course.
Yes they are preparing you to go to war with Evil Vlad.
And Yes the British are going to do it again - are willing to take a missile - and will have a missile cruiser on standby to return fire.

Any sovereign nation or body of water bordering Russia is considered a "security" "concern" of Russia.

Just ask Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Poland, Ukraine, Georgia, etc.

Those countries exist at the sole pleasure of Russia.

-Everything- neighboring Russia is a "buffer zone" as far as Russia is concerned.

Normally, the party on the receiving end of the shooting makes the grievance and the party having committed the shooting denies it.

In this case, the party who did the shooting has made the grievance and the party on the receiving end says it never happened.
Who does that?

I'm not Slav, I'm Celtic, but since the West has trashed it's demographics (and the Constitution, and gone insane), I'm not feeling so much love for the local team. Now, if Putin does something really shitty/sadistic to us, I retain the right to change my mind. Whatever, it is gonna suck.

Yeah well... this isn’t squat. The world was a much more dangerous place during the Cold War. No one person will ever know all the crap that happened between us and the soviets; ships rammed, submarines ramming ships, one of our boats having a soviet practice weapon stuck in her sail, depth charges, the list is endless. And there’s no telling what happened on land.

We get all kerfluffled ref the big, bad Russians and yet we instigate the majority of the incidents.

The Brits are tweaking the Russian's noses-again. When Russia responds for real, the Brits will immediately invoke article 5 and guess what. WW3 has arrived.

The brits are pansies and floofers, particularly the Brit navy. They knew they were in the wrong, they knew they were in territorial waters, and they knew they were going to get some form of response from the Russians.

They did it for intel gathering, nothing more. To see who turns on what radar systems and analyze, see what flights are thrown up with tracking radars turned on and we analyze. ECM operators, or whatever the Brit equivalent is, were going nuts analyzing and recording radar and radio information; frequencies, band-widths, pulse durations and types, wave-forms, signal strengths... all of it.

We did it in the Cold War. We went into Soviet territorial waters all the time. They did it to us all the time. It was a very dangerous cat-and-mouse game and the soviets played extremely hard ball. They didn’t give one rip about collateral damage to us or themselves. They were wanting nothing more that to prove a point and that was we were the aggressors.

The Brits played a game and they lost. With all the gee-whiz navigational shit they’ve got on board they knew exactly where they were within several meters. Hell, all we had underway and submerged was dedreckoning, that and an occasional periscope bearing sweep when the occasion presented itself, and we knew exactly where we were. Thankfully, they didn’t most of the time.

You won't get a LOT of Old Cold Warriors to tell ya, but SOME will tell ya about Russian attacks on INNER Alaska where we actually had serious running battles.
And some will tell ya about similar things in Eastern (but not EXTREME Eastern Siberia.

Ask some OLDER guys who pulled wrenches on BUFFs in the bad old days for some INTERESTING stories. Of COURSE, you'll have to buy the bourbon (in quantity).
