HEALTH Anyone here with sciatic back and leg pain, what do you do for it?

Been trying to care for my DH who has cancer, He can't do anything for himself. I believe lifting things that He used to do has caused my Spinal Stenosis to act up with sciatic pain now. I have to keep going, but I really am in a lot of pain. Any help that does not require a Doctor visit from you guys sure would be appreciated. My DH is going for radiation everyday and I don't have any energy or time for me . I looked at the Aleve bottle and said anyone over 65 should not take it. Got any ideas?

Irene, you simply can't keep going on like this, dear girl. There must be some household help you can get in that your insurance or something would pay for. You're going to kill yourself if you don't stop.

Back when the only problem I had was sciatica, the nerve block injections worked very well for me. After the first few, I was put on a schedule of every three months or less often, depending on the level of pain. Worked very well for about 5 years. Later on, as I developed other problems, I no longer had the sciatica but wound up much worse off with degenerative discs and all-around leg pain.

You really need to find a way to lighten your load around there before you cause some serious damage that cannot be repaired. Seriously. Please think about it.

Sciatica is caused by a mechanical problem. That cannot be fixed by chemicals (meds or supplements). BUT BUT it is made so much worse by stress! mzkitty is correct on that. Meanwhile, best step is to see a good PT who is specially trained in back care... particulalrly "McKenzie" trained. Call the PT and ask if they are trained in McKenzie protocol for back care. It is the MOST effective approach to properly diagnosing and treating back pain. It works rapidly and it cannot make you worse if it fails. Usually takes only 3 simple but specific stretches done a few times per day. But these must be set up to match the mechanical problem revealed by simple movement testing.

If you are over 65, medicare will not allow you to see a PT without a MD referral (bastards). But if you ignore and neglect yourself, you will very soon be unable to help DH at all.

Put ice in a wash cloth. Put that on your back or were ever the pain radiates from. I use Ibuprofen 3 to 4 tablets every 4 hours. I am in my seventy's. Just watch how you feel after taking the ibuprofen. I sure hope you get some relief from the pain. That is miserable pain I know.

ACUPUNCTURE. It works!

I used to go when I had a flareup (usually from lifting or carrying something I shouldn't have). After the last time, when I neglected myself due to husband's medical needs (does this sound familiar???), it took twice as long and twice as many treatments and my doctor (who scolded me in Chinese) put me on "maintenance", once every 6 weeks. That has worked so well, I'm now go in once every 8 weeks. I've been pain free, except for occasional twinges, since November of last year. A heating pad and Motrin takes care of the "twinges".

I alternate between a heating pad and an ice pack on my lower back. This helps with pain for me, but I'm still restricted in movement and lifting for 3 - 4 days.

Didn't know about age restrictions re Aleve. It is the one pain reliever that's helps me with joint pain.

Regards and best wishes.

I have scoliosis and it was not diagnosed until I was being discharged from the military. (T1 – T12)
(Naturally).
Anyway flare ups do occur,
I lay on my back, bend my legs, pull them up to my chest, wrap my arms around the legs at the knees and roll sideways. Try to get the pressure on the hips as best as possible, 5-7 times sideways. This was prescribed to me by 3 rivers orthopedic in Pittsburgh about 30 years ago. It has helped a great deal.
Try it there is no cost or meds, etc…….

If it's true sciatica like mine you can sit on a tennis ball. Find the sore spot on your butt/thigh and let the ball sit under there, rolling it around. My pt gave this to me after my second bout of it.

Tai Chi would help too. It helps the nerves and muscles relax. Your local senior center might have free lessons. But it does take regular practice. However: being a caregiver, this would be one very good thing to gift yourself, that would help you keep going. You'll need someone to relieve you for a couple hours a day a week, for those classes - then you can practice at home, on your own.

OAD I know you mentioned that you go to church. Call your Pastor and tell him you need a break. Even if someone can come for 2-3 hours it will give you a break. My DH and I did that a few times and we had a good time visiting with the patient. That what churches are for.. helping.

THIS! There has to be some way she can get some help. She is running the risk of a serious injury that at her age will not easily heal. I got in the shape I'm in from trying to do too much and I'm considerably younger than OAD. It just isn't worth the risk. I really wish there was something I could do to help but I can't even help myself some days.

One of the consequences of being sedentary, and also being incredibly active, is back pain. About 31 million Americans experience lower back pain at any given moment. It’s a common affliction and one that takes care and diligence to eliminate.

Whether you experience stiffness, aches, or spasms, the following stretches will help keep your back fit and strong.
1. The hamstring floor stretch.

Hold for 30 seconds twice for each leg.
2. Knee to chest stretch.

This helps strengthen and relax your glutes. Hold for 20 seconds for each leg twice.
3. Spinal stretch.

This was a favorite of mine when I suffered sciatica. Hold for 20 seconds and repeat on the other knee. Do this as many times as you like but don’t overdo it.
4. The piriformis stretch.

I've had sciatica twice and only found relief by staying in bed. I would lay on my right side and find a position that was most comfortable and layed on a heating pad. It took 2-3 days of spending all the time I could in that position. I took Extra Strength Tylenol; (2) 650 mg tabs 12 hours apart (total of four daily - no more). Hope you find a way. Will pray for both you & DH.

Injections did some good for me. Falling out of a trailer and landing on my side did more good, though! I need to do that again....

If you get the injections, don't ask stupid questions - like I did. You do not want to know what the needle looks like. Just trust the Dr, take the injections and stay as ignorant to the process as you can. You'll be happier that way.

When I first had it the medical Dr. gave me a shot of cortizone and said it was a back problem. I went to the chiropractor. He used a tens unit I think. It made electrical stimulations at my lower back. The chiroprator gave me some streches to do. Not all chiroptacters are the same. You will need to ask questions and other people recomendations.

One we use does things with machines and the other just puts you in alignment. Both are good. One hurts like h*ll but works good. The other hurts less and is also good. Stretches are great and you can do them yourself.

The exercises/stretches are good place to start.....but.....the sacrum is like a hinge and if it's jammed you may need a chiropractor (not some fly by night.....a really experienced one which is darn hard to find) also sometimes the lumbar vertebrae are involved which stiffens the back/hips/etc. and causes domino effect............YOU MUST HAVE HELP OR BE DISABLED YOURSELF EVENTUALLY.........take care............

About a year ago I had some sciatica and I could not stretch my way out of it with the stretches above.

I had taken a good clump of ginger to work and skinned it and added hot bottled water of about 160 degrees F to my 20 oz thermos. I let the thinly cut pieces steep for 1 hour in the thermos. I drank it down in 30 minutes. Before I was done with the thermos my pain was rescinding. By the time I was done drinking it, the sciatic pain was gone.

My stomach is not bothered by strong ginger drink.

Later I did a brief web-search to discover ginger has some natural ain reducers.

Chiropractors and Acupuncturist are very helpful too.

Hi Old as dirt,

Try this first

Suck a finger then dob it into boron salt then suck it off. Two to three week like this then cut back to once or twice a week

Boron is an effective treatment for 95% or more in the relief of arthritis but its range of action extends beyond that. It plays a crucial role of calcium integration into the cartilage and bone and combined with the Capra Mineral Whey is a very useful natural remedy for Sciatica.

What is borax?

Borax (sodium tetraborate hexahydrate or sodium borate) is a naturally-occurring mineral composed of sodium, boron, oxygen and water. It has been used as a remedy for over 4000 years. Most commercially-produced borax is mined from deposits produced by the repeated evaporation of seasonal lakes. It is found in large quantities in the Western United States, in Mediterranean countries, Kazakhstan, and the Tibet region of China. Turkey is one of the largest commercial producers of borates.

Borax purchased in Australia
Most people only get between 1.7 and 7 mg of boron per day, mainly from fruits, nuts, legumes and vegetables. It is likely that this level represents a severe deficiency, with the deficiency being worse for people living in those areas where there is little or no boron in the soil. Chemical fertilisers inhibit the extraction of boron from the soil, so conventionally-grown fruit and vegetables are low in boron. In contrast, an organic apple grown in boron-rich soils may have 20 mg of boron. The traditional French diet provides about 36 mg of boron per day, and most other traditional diets using organic (no chemical fertiliser) fruits and vegetables would deliver a similar amount of boron.

Borax contains about 11% boron by weight.

Borax's healing and preventative properties

Borax is a potent and effective remedy that deserves to be widely used, and should be in every home. It is so cheap and effective that pharmaceutical companies have done their utmost to discredit it. They have managed to get it banned in Europe and America. However in countries where the big Western pharmaceutical companies do not have the same lobbying power, such as China, Japan, Turkey and Russia it is widely acknowledged and used. In those countries pharmaceutical companies find it much harder to lobby (bribe, threaten and lie to) lawmakers and regulatory agencies. See What the law allows pharmaceutical companies to do.

A limited amount of boron is absolutely essential for good health. Here are some of its properties:

Protect's you from Fluorides. Borax protects against the accumulation of fluorides in the body; is effective as an antidote in fluoride toxicity; and can remove fluorides from the body. (1,2,3,4,5,20)
Anti-microbial. Borax is toxic to insects, parasites, protozoa and bacteria.
Fungicide. Effective against moulds and fungi, internally and externally. (17,18)
Anti-viral.
Hormone normaliser. Stimulates the production of hormones, stabilises estrogen, assists with insulin use and blood glucose control, triglyceride use and production of reactive oxygen. With boron sufficiency, blood serum triglyceride levels are significantly lower. (12) Estrogen replacement therapy may not be necessary. (13,16)
Immune system enhancer. (12) Promotes healing of wounds. (14)
Reduction and control of inflammation. (14,16)
Aphrodisiac for men and women. See low libido. Boron stimulates the production of testosterone (14,16) and normalises oestrogen.
Toxin removal. Chelator / protection from heavy metals. (8)
Stabiliser of calcium, copper and magnesium levels, inhibits calcification. (12). Boron sufficiency normalises calcium levels, preventing both abnormal calcium deposition and bone weakness. (12,13,14) Boron sufficiency inhibits the accumulation of inorganic copper in the bones (12) and prevents loss of bone. (13)
Mental enhancement. Improves attention, both short and long term memory, perception, hand-eye coordination, and manual dexterity. (12,14)
Borax as a remedy

Borax has successfully been used as a remedy for a variety of ailments. (7,9,10,12,13,14,15,16) You can use it for both prevention and treatment.

Rheumatoid arthritis. This is an inflammatory autoimmune disease where the body attacks its own joints, causing degeneration and deformity. It is more common in women, and can occur at any age. Often it develops into osteoarthritis. Work by Prof Roger Wyburn-Mason identified an amoeba in the joint as the cause in certain susceptible people. Boron is an effective cure. (14,15)
Osteoarthritis is a wearing away of the joints, particularly those that have been subject to trauma, infection or over-use when injured. It is more common in men. The cartilage or tough fibrous matter around the joint wears away and the bones rub against each other, causing pain and and further permanent damage to the joint. (14,15)
Osteoporosis (decalcification of the bones) or osteopenia. (12,13,14)
Other bone and connective tissue diseases such as Dupuytren's disease.
Blood lipid disorders (hypertension (high blood pressure), arterial diseases). (12,14)
Obesity.
Cancer. (6,14,19) Boron may be a preventative for prostate cancer.
Swollen gums or loose teeth (pyorrhoea). This is a bit like arthritis of the teeth and gums.
Antiseptic. Very effective for bladder infection and urinary tract infection (UTI). (17) For other infections apply topically or take internally diluted to the recommended dose.
Spondylitis (arthritis of the spine with inflammation in the joints). Calcium is lost from the spinal vertebrae, leading to fusion and disc degeneration. Spondylitis responds to mineral treatments, particularly boron.
Gout. Boron is an effective remedy.
Systemic lupus erythematosus.
How to use borax

In some countries such as Australia, New Zealand and the USA, you can buy borax in the laundry and cleaning section of your supermarket. Brand Names include Boraxo, 20 Mule Team (USA, Mexico), Hovex, Bare Essentials (Australia). Avoid any borax that has added ingredients or scent. You can also buy boron tablets online.

You may be concerned about the warnings on borax containers and some of what you read on the internet. However, borax's toxicity is about the same as sodium chloride (salt).

Borax is absorbed through the skin and mucous membranes. It is not a good idea to bathe in it unless a measured quantity is added to the bath, because large quantities can readily be taken up through your skin in a strong solution.

How to take Borax internally

Because of the hostility of the pharmaceutical industry, there is a scarcity of research on the effects of boron and how it affects metabolism. One paper concluded that humans need a minimum of 0.5 - 1.0 mg of boron per day to function properly. (12) An ongoing maintenance dose of 3 to 6 mg may be used for general good health and the prevention of ailments, especially if you live in an area where the soil is boron-deficient.

To get a dose of 7 mg of boron per day, dissolve one level teaspoon of borax in one quart/litre of water to make a concentrated solution. Take a teaspoonful of this concentrate twice daily with meals.

Take 3 to 7 mg of boron per day for optimal health, if you have no specific problems.

For arthritis, osteoporosis, muscle cramps, joint pain or stiffness, or low hormone production take 10 mg or more per day for several months or longer until your ailment has sufficiently improved.

For fungal infections including candida, mycoplasmas, removing fluoride from the body. Take 100 ml of the concentrated solution per day. Mix it with other drinks or food, and space it out over the whole day. This will provide a dose of about 70 mg of boron per day. Always start with a low dose and gradually increase it. Take regular breaks from the full dose, either taking the full dose 4 or 5 days per week as long as required, or going back down to the maintenance dose for one week each month.

When you consume borax it seems to work synergistically with magnesium, so keep your magnesium intake up whilst taking borax. See Magnesium.

In my ebook Grow Youthful there is more detail on how to use borax for a variety of specific ailments, and the wonderful outcomes you can expect.

How to use Borax externally

Saturate water with borax crystals (ie keep adding them to water until no more dissolve). Apply the borax solution to the problem areas on the skin, and surrounding hair.

Some people have found this borax remedy is more effective by adding 1% hydrogen peroxide to the above solution.

Apply the solution to the skin, and leave it on without rinsing. It tends to cause drying, so you may want to add aloe vera, jojoba oil or lavender oil later.

Interestingly, dog mange is caused by demodex mites and the effective treatment is the above 1% hydrogen peroxide and borax saturated solution applied topically.

Borax toxicity

We only need very small quantities of boron for good health and to prevent diseases such as arthritis. In large quantities it has adverse effects, the same as any other compound.

Borax and boric acid have very low toxicity. Borax's LD50 (median lethal dose) score is 2.66 g/kg in rats, and boric acid is similar. (11) To put it in perspective, table salt is only slightly less toxic with an LD50 of 3.75 g/kg in rats according to the Merck Index.

WIN-1000-Henkel-Newsletter-Borax-.png

Here is a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for borax and for table salt (21), obtained from the same company. Compare the Toxicological Information and Health Hazard Data on the two sheets. You will see that table salt (sodium chloride) is 50-100% more toxic than borax! You will also see that the references they use to imply that borax has effects on fertility require absurdly high doses, and at those doses the studies are still not conclusive.

It is likely that toxicity symptoms will develop only after taking several grams (thousand mg) per day for several months. Signs of boron toxicity are diarrhoea, lethargy, nausea and vomiting. Eventually, also dermatitis. Excess boron can worsen or trigger conditions like ADHD, allergies, asthma, autism, cystic fibrosis, dyslexia, liver and oesophageal cancer. Excessively high doses of boron tend to increase the blood levels of calcium and oestrogen, lower blood glucose, vitamin B6 and zinc.

Broke my legs ,feet, shoulder, ribs ,compression fractures in several back and neck discs, and suffered severe head trauma 20 years ago in a work related misfortune,Died three times and was brought back so it has been my experience that stretching everyday and walking moving whenever you can is what works.I am still able to walk but it gets tougher with the arthiritis setting into the joints but mental attitude will help you too! Do not give up,when you give up you will succumb to your health issues! Fight like you have never fought before! May God Bless you and give you strength my dear Friend!

Stretch your hamstrings, glutes, and hip-flexors EVERY day. Trust me on this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9f1Y4OV3QlA

This. I have chronic lower back pain and occasional sciatica. If I do a few stretches of my hamstrings, the relief is immediate. My usual method is trying to touch my toes, holding the stretch for a bit when I feel the pull on the back of my thighs. I also lay on my back and pull my knees up, one at a time, until I feel the stretch on my hamstring and hold it for several seconds.

I find that if I remember to do some stretches in the course of my daily activities, it keeps the pain at bay and works to strengthen my back muscles.

I love some of the quack medicine promulgated on this thread. Colonel holman is a doctor, listen to him. You have a MECHANICAL PROBLEM with your back. While meds might alleviate some of the pain, you MUST address two things: 1) the LOAD you're putting you back under, and 2) relieving pressure on the nerve itself. You can do (1) yourself, but (2) will require tests and treatment.

I'm not understanding why you're not communicating with your church people. They'll be the ones to help you. What has been said earlier is true: YOU CANNOT RUN THE FARM AND CARE FOR YOUR HUSBAND ALONE. Hell, a 30 year old would have a hard time doing that, and you're half a century older than that. What are you thinking for God's sake??!?

You're killing yourself over this. Is that what you want?

(It's a shame you're not Mormon; you'd be neck deep in people helping you.)

The problem with following suggestions for stretches is... one set that helps five patients, can greatly worsen the next five patients. Sciaitca is caused by at least five very different mechanisms. Sciatica is not a condition in and of itself... it a symptom of sciatic nerve pressure. Prssure may be caused by a bulging disc, degenrated disc (each requires very different stretches from each other), arthritic joint ( requires again different stretches), central spinal stenosis (again different stretches), a tight piriformis muscle (with its own stretch) which often co-exists with a tilted sacrum ( requires stretch that matches the direction of the tilt).

The above posted pics of stretches are primarily forward bending stretches that are good for arthritic joints or a sacrum tilted backeard, but can worsen bulging discs or a scarum tilted forward. Add in some degenerative hip arthritis and that changes the mechanics further. Thus stretches need to be specifically customized to the specific mechanical problem. BUT in her case I suspect it is likely a great deal of over-use and overloading pain. The first step is to lighten the load. Reach out for help and find a sliver of rest, or you will end up useless and suffering needlessly.
