They used live rounds in aliens on prop aliens. They have a place but extreme safety protocols are followed. That did not happen here but as stated.

The actor trusted someone else's word and did not verify themselves. This was standard industry practice, however, the staff walk off should have modified behaviors...

it is true that there used to be a need in certain circumstances, in the past, that dictated the use of live rounds. because of current technology, those circumstances are MUCH fewer than 30 years ago. and as you have pointed out, in any true need of live rounds has so many safety steps and protocols that there is no way i can see how this could happen.

Not buying all the BS. It was a hit, she had something on him.
Maybe, however the guy is a complete ass. What more fun way of bullying than waving a gun around? Makes people nervous even if everybody *knows* it is empty. I don't care who told him it was empty. He shouldn't have been messing around with it. His trigger finger equals his bullet. No excuses.

In his little mind however, I'm quite sure he is the victim in this tragedy.

My question is......

If they were actually filming a scene.. Where is the video of the shooting? Or multiple angle videos? All the proof or evidence would be right there on film. :shr: If they don't have that then why was a weapon fired?
Generally the police who are investigating a suspected crime gather the evidence, I believe. You could check with them and see if they have it.

I believe one of the articles said they were rehearsing the scene, don't know why you would need to actually pull the trigger during rehearsal though.

No need to be snarky. Many were stating he was horse playing or saying it was a hit or saying he aimed directly at her. Or even he was pissed at his crew for walking off.
It would all be on film, even the rehearsals and of course the investigators would have it.

Since Baldwin is such a anti-Trumper, the media, liberals, RINO's will all blame someone else and not Baldwin. He will get off by paying out millions in wrongful death lawsuits and that will be the end of it for him. And his people will spin this and he will come out smelling like a rose and make money off of him killing the girl. It's all his fault for being stupid with a firearm and not knowing his way around guns, but it will not be spun that way. IMO he should be spending time in prison for negligent homicide.

Baldwin is ultimately responsible, but we already see the spin machine hard at work to cast him as the "victim" in all of this. If it were you or I, we'd already be booked into the jail - probably on multiple charges - and our (high) bond would be set.

As usual in these dysfunctional times and as the Sun sets on the American Empire, there is one law for thee and a different law for me.

Sad business.

"The cinematographer who was shot and killed by actor Alec Baldwin with a prop gun on Thursday was married to a corporate lawyer employed by a law firm involved in defending an attorney who worked with the 2016 campaign of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

Matt Hutchins, the husband of Halyna Hutchins who died shortly after she was shot by Baldwin, is employed in the Los Angeles office of Latham & Watkins, the law firm representing Michael Sussmann, who was charged in mid-September by special counsel John Durham with one count of lying to the FBI.

Matt Hutchins joined the law firm earlier this year after serving as an in-house attorney at an entertainment company and practiced at Kirkland & Ellis and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, according to his LinkedIn profile, Reuters reported."

Hummm...A very small and insular world.....

If it was a single action Colt style pistol it would take a little more than a cursory look to tell the kind of cartridges loaded into the cylinder. But at the same time if you loaded it you would have plenty of time to tell if you did so in a lit room with even a 60 watt bulb.

Sure, if you weren't totally oblivious. A previous post mentioned a person who didn't know the difference between shotgun shells and .22s. That person would be clueless about looking into the cylinder.

We've already come to the conclusion in the discussion that the last two who handled the weapon very likely fit the "oblivious" category.

Having said that, it doesn't absolve either from blame from what we know at this time.

A vintage Colt Dragoon from the 1800s is seen. The fatal gun was a Colt

That's what Aesop showed in a photo of the gun in question in a blog post. A BLACK POWDER Colt Army ... which does not use cartridges.

Raconteur Report: Epiphany: No, Not Even If You've Got A Hat

This just gets wilder and wilder.

And the armorer in question is supposedly the daughter of Thell Reed, a legendary figure in movies.

True? I know not.

If it's a percussion cap, and not a cartridge conversion, that makes it all the more WTF?....

FWIW, if the revolver was a black powder Dragoon, it would be even easier to see if it had percussion caps on the nipples, instead of cartridges in the cylinder of a Colt SAA. FWIW, If a Dragoon was loaded with powder, but had no percussion caps on the nipples, it wouldn't fire anyway.

I'm fairly sure that the revolver used was an 1873 Colt SAA - which uses cartridges - but whatever was used, at the end of the day, Baldwin is still responsible.

At this point of information (and dis-information) I'm willing to let the police/investigators have the time they need to sort through it all.

Have a feeling NOBODY is going to come out of this mess unscathed.

Some of the Colt Army .44s were converted over to use cartridges. This was before the advent of Colt’s SAA.

The Hollywood Idiocracy

Millions of Americans carry firearms every day. Many tens of millions more own firearms. There are tens of thousands of firearms videos on YouTube and other venues. Almost no one gets hurt. There may be others, but I'm only aware of one Negligent Discharge on video where someone was hurt and that was the infamous - non fatal - Tex Grubner vid where he shot himself in the leg.

There are a relative few, and I mean very, very few, instances of NDs amongst the legal firearms owning public and legal concealed carriers and most of these do not result in injury. Amongst the ones that do result in injury, fewer still result in death. Compared to auto accidents, legally carrying and using a firearm is an almost unbelievably safe activity.

Then we get to Hollywood.

Understand that the movie industry and specifically people who work in actual production - like actors, directors, cameramen, grips and others - as opposed to craft services and other catering, wardrobe, etc. is an incredibly tiny sliver of the American population.

Also understand that when using firearms on a movie set, there are armorers and others who are supposed to be carefully supervising the use of any firearms. American firearms owners and concealed carriers don't go around with a retinue of supervisors and armorers.

Nonetheless, we hear of semi-regular NDs and firearms deaths amongst this vanishingly tiny slice of the population. How is this possible?

There's only one possible explanation: The Hollywood types are *ucking idiots.

The question is, are you willing to break the Film Set Rules (of LONG standing) and demand he check the gun for loading accuracy? I'm not sure I would be willing to BREAK those rules and have this dufus DO that. Now Keanu Reeves, sure I'd break the rules with him because he has trained with Operators, and guys like Taran Butler (a verifiable LEGEND in his shooting sport) and knows how things can go wrong.
But again, that breaks the rules INSIDE THAT INDUSTRY. I don't care what the rules are here in the Real World, but in THAT world, the rules are actually different. In some jurisdictions, the weapons prop manager is the person who MUST be the last one to handle the weapon and the actor MUST NOT manipulate the weapon other than as required for the script.
Look for the rules for filming in NYC...

Safety procedures on the New Mexico set of the movie Rust were under increasing scrutiny on Sunday as colleagues, friends and family paid tribute to the cinematographer shot dead by the actor Alec Baldwin in what appeared to be an accidental misfire.
A vigil for Halyna Hutchins, the 42-year-old director of photography killed after Baldwin was handed a loaded revolver by the western’s production crew, took place in Albuquerque attended by industry professionals including a number of Hollywood actors including Jon Hamm and John Slattery, who are filming projects nearby.

In a statement, Joel Souza, the movie’s director who was struck in the shoulder by the shot that killed Hutchins, and released from hospital after treatment, said: “I am gutted by the loss of my friend and colleague, Halyna. She was kind, vibrant, incredibly talented, fought for every inch and always pushed me to be better.”

Some of those who attended the vigil held signs calling for better safety protocols on film sets. “I think that it’s definitely a stark reminder for gun safety on set, and I am with the idea of banning real guns from set if that is possible,” Cheryl Lowe, a film worker, told Reuters.

Investigators from the Santa Fe sheriff’s department were focusing on concerns raised by crew members, including claims of “super unsafe” conditions on the set, and particularly the actions of the movie’s assistant director Dave Halls, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The film’s producers have said they had not been told about safety issues but will be “conducting an internal view of our procedures while production is shut down”. Such incidents on film sets are very rare.

A police search warrant states that Halls selected the weapon from a tray of three prepared by the movie’s armourer, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, and handed it to Baldwin with the words: “cold gun”, indicating that the prop firearm was not loaded with a live round. The Guardian has contacted Halls for comment.
The Times has also reported tension on set between crew members and the veteran assistant director in the hours leading up to last Thursday’s tragedy, which took place just days into a scheduled three-week shoot in the New Mexico desert.
Sources told the newspaper that crucial safety protocols, including required regular inspection of weapons, were not followed. Meanwhile, on the day of the incident, at least six camera crew members had walked off the set in protest at working conditions, including that they were required to make a 100-mile round-trip each day to work.

Baldwin, 63, one of Hollywood’s best known actors, has cooperated with investigators. Hutchins’s father, Anatoly Androsovych, said he did not blame the actor for his daughter’s death.

“We still can’t believe Halyna is dead and her mother is going out of her mind with grief. But I don’t hold Alec Baldwin responsible. It is the responsibility of the props people who handle the guns,” he told the Sun on Sunday.

He said that Baldwin, best known for his roles in the NBC comedy 30 Rock and his satirical portrayal of Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live, had been in contact with Hutchins’s husband Matthew to send his sympathy to him and the couple’s nine-year-old son Andros.

“The little boy has been very badly affected. He is lost without his mother,” Androsovych said, adding that his son-in-law was considering legal action.

Baldwin paid tribute to Hutchins in his own statement last week. “There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours,” he said.
Crew members who spoke anonymously to the LA Times said they were concerned about the relentless pace of the production shoot. “Every day on that set, it was just go-go-go. They were in such a rush to get things done,” said one.

Others said they were puzzled how Halls, 62, had handed Baldwin a loaded gun without checking it first, and stating wrongly that it was not loaded. In a recording of a 911 call made by the script supervisor Mamie Mitchell, obtained by the Albuquerque Journal, she said Halls had yelled at her earlier in the day.
“He’s supposed to check the guns. He’s responsible for what happens on the set,” she said.

Detectives have also spoken with Reed, 24. Her role on Rust was the second time that she had acted as head armourer, following the Nicolas Cage western The Old Way, filmed earlier this year.
Authorities have not given an update on the case since Friday, when they said inquiries were at “a preliminary stage”.

“At this time, we do not know if charges will be filed. We will look into all facts and evidence of the case with great discretion and have further information at a later time. Our thoughts are with all affected by this tragedy,” the Santa Fe district attorney, Mary Carmack-Altwies, said in a statement.

Efforts to reach Reed for comment were unsuccessful.

Why are live rounds of the same caliber as the prop gun even on the set? No reason other than somebody wanted to screw around and do some plinking. Armorer should have stopped that crap pronto. Armorer was only 24 and may have got the job because she is someone's daughter who is also in the movie business. Very common. At this point I doubt she got the job because she knows gun safety or she was intimidated by someone who could end her career in the movie business.

Mini Bio (1)
Thell Reed was born and raised in Downey, California. His father worked hard at maintaining a small chain of BB-Q restaurants to afford him the luxury of spoiling his only son. Being a gun enthusiast, he bestowed on him a pair of match Colt .45s and told him to "Make a living with them!" Thell did just that. He began winning fast draw tournaments before he was legally allowed to enter them. But, Thell was always more than just an exhibition shooter. When he was just 13, his Father took him on a hunting trip to Alaska. An attacking Kodiak took the young gunman by surprise, but Thell's dexterity with a bolt action was too much for the bear and he dropped him at his feet.

Gene Autry became aware of the reputation Thell was building and took the young lad under his wing on his Wild West tour. Soon, he was performing for not only Hollywood royalty, but the British crown as well. Before long, Hollywood came looking for Thell to share his skills and coach the biggest names in the business. It began with Gunsmoke (1955), continued into movies the caliber of L.A. Confidential (1997) and now for over 30 years he has been at the very top of his profession. From his specialty of the Wild West with films like Tombstone (1993) and The Quick and the Dead (1995) to the high powered weapons of today in films like Proof of Life (2000) and Flags of Our Fathers (2006), Thell brings something special to every film he's involved in. He hasn't slowed down a bit and continues to help the best actors in the business from Russell Crowe to Brad Pitt achieve the kind of realistic gun handling that today's film goers require.

From post 313, above:

“At this time, we do not know if charges will be filed. We will look into all facts and evidence of the case with great discretion and have further information at a later time. Our thoughts are with all affected by this tragedy,” the Santa Fe district attorney, Mary Carmack-Altwies, said in a statement.

Well, isn't that special? Mizz Mary Carmack-Altwies (does anyone else get sick of all the professional women's hyphenated surnames?), the Santa Fe district attorney is going to look at all the facts and evidence with "great discretion". Good to know that their thoughts are with all of those affected by the tragedy, too, right?

Does anyone here think that Billy Bob Sixpack in the woods or Jamal Washington in the hood would be treated with such caring discretion if they accidentally capped someone? Would Mizz Carmack-Altwies' office be extending good thoughts to Billy or Jamal's people who were "affected" by the tragedy?

God damn to Hell the toadies and suck ups who treat the Hollywood elites like delicate snowflakes!

Billy or Jamal would already be in the county jail wearing orange and - if they were lucky - be dining on a crap bologna sandwich. Their "people" would be desperately hocking their belongings, digging into their paltry savings and looking for change in the couch to raise bail money and the only criterion Mizz Mary Carmack-Altwies - or more likely, one of her assistant DA's - would be looking at was who had their finger on the trigger. Their attitude would be, "We can sort out the facts later."

Billy and Jamal didn't have proper firearms training and one of their buds handed them the gun? Tough shit, sunshine. It's still your fault! Billy didn't mean to do it? Jamal said it was an accident? Tell it to the judge, pal and your public defender.

Because Mizz Carmack-Altweies knows that no one - in the bigger picture - gives a shit about the Billys or Jamals and she knows that their names won't be brought up at the next cocktail party or soiree. What Mizz Carmack-Altwies forgets, as a local DA, is that she works for her New Mexico constituency and that includes Billy and Jamal and all of "their people." She does NOT work for California elites who come to New Mexico to shoot a damned movie and while the Californians should not receive lesser justice than the local New Mexicans, they should effing well not receive special treatment!

Equal justice has long been a farcical notion in the US, but this elevates it to a level which could have been a sketch in the old Rowan and Martin's Laugh In.

Justice is supposed to be blind lady, but you obviously - and none too subtly - have her peeking under the blindfold.

Sad business, indeed.

I imagine the 24 year old nitwit "armorer" is indeed Thell's offspring, that is how you get a Hollywood job.
It is all dynastic, no matter where you are in the hierarchy.
