Thanks for the heads-up! Eventually something is going to hit us square on and then things are gonna get real interesting.... :(

thank you, gotta wonder if it was gamma rays don't they leave a sunburn or will an C-class flare do this as well?

I wish the information about the kids had said what day it happened etc. Then there could be some investigating - Were we getting hit by a flare on that day and time? Could there have been a hole in the magnetic field?

Was it when the big M6 happened yesterday?

they did not give much info to be able to try and look at a time line of what was happening solar wise and magnetosphere wise.

If it was something to do with the sun, more people would have gotten sunburned. This must have happened somewhere they went, or might be an irritation reaction, for instance, to something in a bottle sunscreen that they passed around among the group.

Matapam is correct. Once we start seeing X-Class flares, CMEs, LARGE sunspots, combined with disturbances in the magnetosphere, we need to be watching our radiation meters.

Chances are still low for a natural event. Doesn't mean evil men with EMP Satellites wont take the opportunity to do dirty deeds.

As for those Sunburns, perhaps related to the dying birds and fish? Maybe someone playing with a laser in space?? not enough dots yet.

With publicity, more people who were sunburned may speak up. If the effect was area-wide, not just a group of kids, there might have been a local, high altitude ozone hole that let in a lot of UV. Ozone holes are associated with very high altitude ice clouds being hit with bright sunshine, generally only happening at the poles. The unusually deep plunge to the south of the jet stream might have caused something of the sort.

Mind you, this is just brainstorming, with zero evidence.

A nice large X-class flare just ejected off the sun.

Major Flare (X2.2) / Solar Update
02/15/2011 by Kevin VE3EN at 02:20

X2.2 Major Solar Flare - The sun showed some love on Valentines Day. Massive Sunspot 1158 has produced a major X2.2 Class Solar Flare at 01:56 UTC Tuesday. This is the largest Solar Flare of Cycle 24 and a CME could be associated with this event. A strong R3 Radio Blackout has taken place as well. More to follow.

X2.2 Flare captured by GOES SXI (Tuesday)
Solar Flux 113 - The solar flux is again at a new high of 113. This beats out Sunday's reading of 107 and this is the highest it has been since September of 2005.

Solar Update / Aurora Watch - There will continue to be a chance for strong solar flares around Sunspot 1158. This region has a BETA-Gamma magnetic configuration which should keep it very active over the next 24-48 hours.

With all of the flare activity taking place over the past 72 hours, there will be a chance for geomagnetic storming at high latitudes should any effects from CME activity take place. More information will follow should a CME be on its way due to the X2.2 Flare early on Tuesday.

Yep, good catch. Im taking the last of my Energy to post a warning.

This is a power flare for a small sunspot and no CMEs. Also, the magnetosphere is being blasted at the same time. Sun watchers need to toss out all they know when this starts happening. Worse part - AIMED AT EARTH. When they are Earth bound, and things are amiss, anything is possible.

Upper left - storms in both boxes

Ive been watching for and expecting storms like this for 11 years. Now that they are here, I have deer/headlight syndrome.
I see one more thing out of the norm, I'll be making more adjustments.

Just took a peak at the warnings and the sunspot is getting nastier still, and now it's fully directed at us, good chance of another Xclass flare popping out.
