MINNEAPOLIS, MN - MAY 27: A construction site burns in a large fire near the Third Police Precinct on May 27, 2020 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A number of businesses and homes were damaged as the area has become the site of an ongoing protest after the police killing of George Floyd. Four Minneapolis police officers have been fired after a video taken by a bystander was posted on social media showing Floyd's neck being pinned to the ground by an officer as he repeatedly said, I can’t breathe. Floyd was later pronounced dead while in police custody after being transported to Hennepin County Medical Center.'s neck being pinned to the ground by an officer as he repeatedly said, I can’t breathe. Left-wing media figures rushed to threaten violent riots on Friday evening if President Donald Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) attempt to fill the Supreme Court seat vacated by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who passed away earlier in the day.

Reza Aslan, who used to have a show on CNN, responded by writing: “If they even TRY to replace RBG we burn the entire f***ing thing down.”

Political writer Laura Bassett echoed a similar sentiment, but stopped short of making a threat, writing: “If McConnell jams someone through, which he will, there will be riots. … *more, bigger riots.”

Australian astrophysicist Dr. Jessie Christiansen tweeted: “IF THEY RAM THROUGH AN APPOINTMENT IN THE NEXT TWO MONTHS I WILL RIOT. This is an actual nightmare.”

Writer Beau Willimon wrote: “We’re shutting this country down if Trump and McConnell try to ram through an appointment before the election.”

Political commentator Katie Herzog wrote: “All we can hope for in times like these is that Mitch McConnell has a stroke from laughing too hard. To clarify: I don’t want him to die. I just want him to be brain dead. I’m not a monster.”

So screw you - you rotten evil sick communists!! Burn the cities down. We don't care. We will still prevail and keep America free!!

As in a rhinoceros? I didn't realize that he had nominated any wild animals.

Interesting.
Gorsuch has turned out to be a real dud, amigo. He is in the same mold as Bush's 1990? Souter. so yeah, Trump proved yet again he doesn't know how to pick high quality people to implement his vision.

Oreally

Right from the start
this is from nbc

"There is ample precedent for nominations and confirmations to the Supreme Court in presidential election years. It's happened six times since 1900. The most recent nomination and confirmation in an election year was 1940, after Justice Pierce Butler died in office and Franklin D. Roosevelt nominated Frank Murphy in January 1940; he was confirmed 12 days later.
The latest election year confirmation came in 1916 when Charles Evans Hughes resigned in June and President Woodrow Wilson nominated John Clarke on July 14. Ten days later he was unanimously confirmed. There has never been one filled later than that ahead of an election."

They must have know she wasn't doing well. That is likely why Trump expanded his possibles list just recently. That included several Senators. I wonder if they would be excluded from voting for themselves. If so, they may not be selected as they would be needed to make the required Senate majority.

It might also mean that vetting has already been done, so selection could be eased.

It's going to be interesting to see what names Trump floats out there just to yank their chain...Like Mark Levin.

He'll know by Monday PM if there is a chance of getting anybody confirmed.

You can bet McConnell's phone is melting, right about now.
Trump needs to find a black conservative woman to fill that seat, put it out there asap, and its checkmate for the Dem's!!!

It also includes Daniel Cameron, Kentucky AG, as he was mentioned recently as a possible.

And BTW, he is black.

Interesting..................

Flags at the Supreme Court are now at half mast. Not sure who makes that determination, but they're down there at least.
No reports of any demonstration activity; there is a crowd there but looks to be thinning out a bit.
Jewish folks I know on Twitter have mentioned a tradition that someone who dies on the Jewish New year is considered to be "gathered among the righteous" or words to that effect.

I am not saying if she is or isn't that isn't my call to make, but it would make sense for them to announce her death in the evening given that tradition - also if she died at 6:30 pm, it takes a bit of time to inform the family, do the legal stuff and get all the ducks in a row.

Heck, I've read the protocols for the death of the British Monarch and it isn't announced for a few hours either, there are very strict rules about what has to happen first.

I was thinking something along these lines or at least someone, probably female, that would be very very difficult for at least the Republicans in the Senate not to confirm and make those leading attacks based on personality (rather than a judicial record) look mean or even "misogynistic."

The real fly in the ointment (and has been for about 30 years now) is that way too many men have issues in their background that involve relationship "issues" fair or not, it happens and can be anything from a really messy divorce to what happened at high school parties - vetting people for that can be difficult because the opposition (on whichever side wants to block the nomination, can be ruthless in their pursuit of these things, especially now).

On the other hand, MOST (not all but MOST) career married women with children have had at least one or twice used technically illegal "child-care arrangements" often when they were young and just starting out. With the rare exception of someone from a wealthy family (and they often have these issues too) or supportive grandparents, at some point, most young career women especially in high powered jobs like lawyer, doctor, junior bank executive, etc, end up employing a babysitter, nanny or even day-care center that isn't totally above board and may even be of dubious legal status.

And as I said, the wealthy are not immune to finding out that "Maria" wasn't actually legal and/or both she and Nancy the native-born trained Nanny were not paid full wages and all required employment mandates. I did this sort of work as a young woman and getting employers to even pay the required social security was a nightmare but I'm glad I did so, but I had options, and a lot of women (mostly it is women) doing this sort of work don't.

These two issues: usually sex "scandals" (real or imaginary) for men and child-care related issues (the usually legal status of the employee and/or unpaid mandates or paid below minimum wage) either of which can be 30 or 40 years old.

Vetting that after 30, 40 or even 50 years in the case of high school/early 20 something situations in a few days is difficult because often the person being vetted doesn't even realize there may have been a problem.
