CHAT So you wake up on Dec 9th, and the railroad strike has occurred -- what are the first things you will do?

Unless the news is in the morning newspaper, I won't know about it until I get on here around noon. No panic here, if I haven't stocked it in 20+ years of prepping, I doubt I'll think of it when there is a railroad strike.

Historically the government forces the railroads back to work pretty much immediately citing national emergency. Of course, our current leaders don't seem to give a shitz about citizens doing without.

Interesting Observation:

Besides very high levels of coffee consumption, the other trend I see in this thread is how most folks here will not be doing much of anything out of the ordinary (besides drinking a morning cup of joe), because they are pretty much stocked already.

People hitting the stores right after the problem becomes known will - in and of itself - create a huge problem.

But, apparently, it will not be the crew here creating the last minute problems.

Trying to use this chat as an idea thought box of things you'll do if you wake up and the railroad strike is under way.

Go to the bank? Go to the grocery store?

Our thoughts may jingle ideas in others heads that they hadn't quite thought of, and they might want to put on the short 'to do' list.
The LAST places you should be as a PREPPER on a PREPPER forum is in the middle of store during a panic buying situation you already knew was coming and were prepped for. The only place you should be is where you would normally be on that day, knowing you ALREADY got those things done before hand. You should already have cash on hand, food in storage, extra preps and parts that you may have need of and your holiday shopping done.

The post at the very least has been on this board for a while now. I know I got all those "top off" preps done, including my Christmas shopping, knowing I wasnt going to get anything delivered after the 9th. But we have decided as a family the last few years to do what we call "The Norman Rockwell" Christmas - meaning we are treating it as if it were during the Great Depression (because it IS for many of us). We are focusing on needs, not wants and spending time as family, and not worrying about the "stuff". Only the children get store bought gifts this year and only within budgets. We still follow the "Something you want, something you need, something to wear, something to read" advice in our house for the kids. Everyone else (our elderly family members) gets handmade, hand baked/preserved, etc.

Honestly? Have some coffee, shoot a video about it for my YouTube channel, maybe get some extra cat treats as I don't have enough of those stocked, (Got loads of cat food for the kitties) and that's about it. I am stocked to the rafters here.

Will be sure to top off car's gas tank on the 1st after I visit Les Schwab for a vehicle safety check and tire check-up. Will also make sure I have perishables stocked -- things like veggies, fruit, dairy, and bread. I'd love to buy more canned and dry goods, but I have no more room to store them in!

I've just checked and replaced the batteries in my battery-operated lanterns. And I went through my battery collection, tossed the leaky ones, and am charging up the rechargeable ones. I have plenty on hand, but they need to be better organized.

I just stocked up on coffee a few weeks ago, but I've been going through it like water. Better pick up a few more cans of my favorite brand just in case!

I doubt that Biden whispering "mission accomplished" will have the desired effect this time.

The workers may be forced back to work.
Those that choose to show up may not show up efficiently.

Sure, salaried posturing will attempt to keep things rolling. This could be a chronic disruption rather than an acute event.

Bottom line, we just keep on keeping on with generic preparation. I'll fight the urge to "panic buy" anything.

We know the sumbitches in charge are gonna wreck the system eventually. Whether or not this will be their excuse is ytbd.

Carry on as usual, which includes keeping an ear to the news. I can see the wisdom of having a winter's supply of animal feed and fuel laid back (if you can store it), but as far as household needs...we should all already be up to speed. Really, in this area? Not many consumer goods are moved in by rail. It's all pass-thru traffic. Taconite from the mines to the port and raw material for same back up to the Range. Wood products from the mills either here or from Canada. Pass-thru tanker and container traffic to and from Canada.

The grain/feed mills are close (100-150 mile radius) and trucked, the refinery (pipeline supplied) is close and same, food is trucked. Just not going to make a lot of difference in this fairly off-the-beaten-track area for a long time. If anything, I will feel bad for the nation's truckers, because if a rail strike lasted more than a week, they would get slammed and take the worst of it.

I might go top off a little more than usual but I really need to fill up my gas tank.
I’ve been a bad girl with not keeping up that.
It’s just every time I go to do it, I look at what it’ll cost and then get all wishy washy and only fill to 1/4-1/2 tank.
I’ve either JUST been to the grocery and already spent 100$….or, am about to go. Thankfully, my work is seven minutes away.

We live in a secluded, wooded area but blessed to be close to everything we need, so sometimes spending 50-75$ on gas gets neglected.

PROCRASTINATION (the habit - not the occasional ”I just can’t keep up”) should have no place in the lifestyle of folks who call themselves peppers. if you’re not routinely checking for holes in preps in this day and age of KNOWN and OBVIOUSLY APPARENT SHORTAGES you are truly “slipping”.

Make sure the bills are paid. If I missed anything on the grocery list, make sure I grab it. Grab an extra bag of cat food. Let family know that any gifts that I'm not personally making are likely to arrive late.

Oh, and maybe fill a few extra cans with gas so I know we have enough for the trip to visit family at the end of the month.

Just read the first page, so this may be a repeat.

While everybody considers food (or drinks) as the No. 1 priority, the government will not.

Food and drinks can be shipped via truck. Slower, and a lot more of them but still can be done.

INHO the No. 1 thing that the government will/may consider in jumping in, is coal. You and I may not use it, but power plants use it and use it a lot. Power plants go through coal cars by about 100 a day. And that is not something that can be replaced with semi's.

So I think the government will step in (it's Biden of course he will step in, he's already done it, in the negotiations) so the rail strike will only be a few days, if that.

While food and drink may be at the top of the list (to include coffee, so funeral homes won't be over run, and peeing) you might consider if you get your electricity from a coal fired power plant, to have a genie (and anyone on this board who doesn't have 2 already isn't serious about survival LOL) already checked out and ready to go.

Along with candles, tea candles and flower pots, rocket stoves, long johns, etc. Of course I would prefer a camp stove with a stock pile of propane, and a wood heater. AND 2 genie's. But that's me.

And as a side note if you have a genie where everybody in the neighborhood can hear it running, plenty of ammo.

Biden thinks AR15's are spooky, but a sawed off shotgun is much much worse. And has been for a lot longer. So the first thing you might want to do, even before peeing and drinking that cup is load you weapon.

The left could go either way on this one.

They can either send in the mafia to bust up the Unions.
They could roll over and give them everything the Unions ask for.
They could allow people to be cold for a couple of weeks in order to pass legislation in some sneaky back room deal.

I'm betting on the choice that uses the most words.

There was a war over there and the first thing this administration did was cut off energy resources . . .
to their Allies - their friends - their treaty partners.

I would not assume that just because you are going to be cold that this administration has any plan to alleviate that inconvenience - especially since they did not win big in the mid terms.

Haven't they said in the past that they intend to "get even".

DEWWWWWW WHAT?

I'm gonna pretend you didin't say that, so we can still be friends.

Load your weapons. :xpnd:
Well.......there are some on the board who aren't prepped up yet either, and don't have 2, I say 2 genies either. LOL Got to encourage the young ones.

But like yeah all my guns at the bottom of the lake are all loaded. Cuz I be like if you see a gun laying around my house, don't act like it's loaded, because it really is. Maybe I should have said strap it on, as I'm getting out of bed.

So we good right?

How do you like your coffee?

Probably drive to the feed mill and buy enough chicken feed to last until June. Other than that, since we no longer are the owners here, nothing else I can think of.

DS did fill the tractors with diesel and then refilled all the cans... I'm not used to not having a 300 gallon diesel tank sitting full, but it is what it is.

Purina feed is one of my customers.
This is a dang fine idea.
They run trains with inbound grains 3 days a week.
Semi loads of cattle feed go out 7 days a week
They also make chicken feed and many other feeds via 50lb bag
