OMG!
Where are all the coal mine workers going to find coding jobs?
China?

It must take a tremendous human interface to do all that censoring.

"So when someone says "freedom" if the "F" is capitalized, do we let it go - or is it the other way around?"

By giving them severance pay, and them deciding to quit. They can’t get unemployment.

Pretty smart way to lay off a bunch of people.

I'm no employment lawyer, but I'm not so sure.

The original mail required employees to "click yes" to keep their job. By doing nothing, they're automatically let go and given three months' severance. They may not be "deciding" to quit as a court would see it. Maybe.

Well, I was born a script kiddie’s daughter
In a commune, on a hill in San Francisco's Civic Center neighborhood
We were poor but we had free love and wokeness
That's the one thing that daddy made sure of
He coded to make a poor man's dollar

My daddy worked all night in the Twitter air-conditioned office
All day long hacking peoples Twitter accounts
Mommy smoked the crack pipe at night
And read the Karl Marx books by the free energy light
And ever' thing would start all over come break of morn'

Daddy loved and raised eight kids by different women in the commune on a kiddies pay
Mommy tapped on the keyboard playing games every day
Why, I've seen her fingers bleed
To complain, there was no need
She'd smile in mommy's understanding way cause she was high as a kite

In the summertime we didn't have organic shoes to wear
But in the wintertime we'd all get a brand-new pair
From the commune market
Money made from selling peoples Twitter accounts
Daddy always managed to get the money somewhere

Yeah, I'm proud to be a script kiddie’s daughter
I remember well, the triple filtered water from the tap
The work we done was hard
At night we'd sleep 'cause we were high from Mommy’s crack pipe
Never thought of ever leaving the commune in the San Francisco's Civic Center neighborhood

Well, a lot of things have changed since a way back then
Daddy learned to mine coal
Mommy learned too and now we have more Tofurky
'Cept the memories of a script kiddie’s daughter
'Cept the memories of a script kiddie’s daughter

Please don't let the door hit you in the arse as you leave if you refuse to work atleast 8hrs a day. If you work hard and as efficiently as possible, wages and promotions will be handed out.

Thank you,
Your new BOSS.

What did most of them do besides sit and read tweets all day? People keep talking about "coders". WTH is there for thousands of "coders" to do inside a system that's already up, running, and apparently attractive to international millions of addicts?

I can see staff to help folks with account problems, set up stuff with advertisers, or to keep actual scam-crap and offensive material to a dull roar, but multi-thousands? Nope. A whole lot of gold-bricking and nest feathering going on.

Cute. If that's actually you writing this - there is a position in the commune for you too!

Not intended as a hit. I can plow up a storm to this day - but I don't code and I don't rhyme.

From the sounds of it, Twitter culture was like the Wild West and security discipline, with regards to building access, badge access, network access, and in particular "source code" and intellectual property access, was sketchy.

(Because all the Whaling and Culling can be done without shutting down the buildings)

You would be amazed at the amount of “make work” that gets spun up in corporate hierarchies. The more “woke” the more entranced they are with buzzwords and bullcrap “analysis”.

People with very little real work have jam packed calendars and are dynamo’s of much ado about nothing.

This is that "stakeholder capitalism" which is not capitalism at all.

It is Communism. The employees are "stakeholders" and the company is there only to serve their interests profit is not relevant. The company must do what the employees demand. It is unionization at its worst.

Oh, I agree. If I'd ever attended all the bullshit meetings, seminars, and internal timewasters which were available to me, nothing would have ever gotten done on the real job. As it was, didn't take 'em long to figure out that if someone was looking for me, I'd be in the Dept. actually working.

So, from what I understand these folks are averaging something north of $150k per year with many hundreds of workers in the 200k to 400k range.

Do they have any CLUE as to how much money that is? I doubt it.
These Utopian Dreamers have no idea they live in a utopian bubble unlike nothing ever seen in human history. The veritable definition of unsustainable.

One thing I love about running my own business is that when customers want me in a meeting I ask for a PO. Amazing how few meetings I have to go to now, LOLOLOL

Everyone believes that the reason you can't get a raise is because
the evil capitalist make too much money.

No one even thinks that the reason you can't get a raise is because
all of your excess productivity derived from your personal outstanding performance
is being sucked off by the "really nice people" in the next cubicle
who are under achievers who can never ever be fired because they can't or won't do the job.

Nope, the vast majority of s/w grunts deliver good code at an break neck rate, and with quality. That is the nature of most s/w jobs. We never get the time we need based on a 40 hour week and have to crunch it near delivery time.

The non-s/w person does not realize just what a s/w grunt does to get the job done, and it is not surprising.

Been in the s/w business slinging code since the 80s. Defense, semiconductor, telecom, and high tech. Never done business as I was computer science grad. Done avionics, black programs, embedded, robotics, VoIP, AIN, distributed and been doing Cloud server based now for a while.

Working long hours and delivering good quality code that gets the job done is accomplished all the time by s/w grunts. I've had projects where we worked a month for 10 hours every day (required by mgmt), weekends included, to get the release out on time. And it was not paid as we are exempt. But we did it for pride of job, commitment to each other, the company and the customer. And then it would happen again, and again. Nature of the beast. Don't like it, then leave. Seen s/w directors and managers collapse at the office from exhaustion. After getting rested, they come back.

While this is common with working new development, new technology or integrating new hardware, it also happens with legacy systems.

The 5 X 9s mission critical reliability s/w for military, police, hospitals, ATC, is far more difficult than coding a media platform, and it is done by far more s/w grunts than media platforms.

Any competent s/w grunt, science or business, degreed or non-degreed, can join that twitter shop and tear apart that code and figure out what is under the hood and start cranking out new releases and patches in a short time. Its not brain surgery, just hard work.

Heck, I would bet there are some on this board that could be productive day one at that shop, much less a week or month.
But I wasn't talking about the majority of s/w grunts. Used to be one myself, and must say, I don't recall anything like the atmosphere that (it is not disputed) used to exist at Twitter. The video showed some real singing talent, but where was the slinging talent? Code slinging, that is?

That was the point. Musk is trying to bring that back. There's an emerging labor glut and multiple "tech" companies laying off, plus the continuous flow coming out of universities (where CS is now a popular major, maybe a bit easier now that you don't have to write microcode or a compiler to graduate) there are more people than jobs, and Musk can hire from that pool, people who were never oppositional to him and are grateful for a job.

I used to be in that role myself for a while. Chose to do something else and transitioned to roles where coding is an auxiliary skill not the main one.

But 8 hours is not the expectation. It never was in that business, until I guess recently. 10 or 12, then come back and do it again the next day, and the next ...

First he got rid of the clearly oppositional and incompetent and the censors.

But still costs are too high and he doesn't need so many to maintain and upgrade an existing platform.

With all the talk of not having enough people to maintain it and crashes to come, it's a fairly clear threat that people are looking to hack it and make their dream come true. They want Musk to fail. They'll rejoice if Twitter goes down.

Therefore, the need for a war footing. It's not a good look, but so far Twitter keeps working just fine, and that's what the public, who have hard jobs and demanding unfriendly bosses of their own. care about.

Anyone that's been fired will likely figure that died with the pink slip. I know I would (if would be wise enough to keep my mouth shut while the other company finished dying or otherwise gets to where they don't give a rat's posterior what I'm doing anymore).

Every non-compete I ever signed took that situation into consideration.

I hear that meetings alone often take up a third of a sixty hour week.

Maybe. But the rules for mass layoffs is called RIF. Reduction in work force. And by law you have to give them severance pay. ESPECIALLY if they are over the age of 40. (I think it’s 40 but don’t hold me to that)

I had it happen to me. We heard layoffs were coming. And my fellow Nurse-co-worker had a lawyer for a husband and he is the one that told us they will have to do RIF pay by federal law.

Sure enough we were given a package with the option to take the money and NOT file unemployment, or refuse the money and maybe get unemployment. It depends on the state. Since we were offered money and refused, the unemployment could determine you may not qualify.

It is different in every state. But the Federal law is there.

All I can say definitively is that this whole thing is a mess.

Psst (whispering) that's code for activists monitoring free speech and coding the speech out of existence, OR being able to hit the delete button on their computer. A coder.
