Not food related but price hike related.

I was over at the Pottery Barn at the Bellevue Square in Bellevue, Wa. this last Wednesday to check out pillow covers.

Right after purchasing one that was in their hidden markdown area, I was still standing at the register counter when the manager came up to the employees and said, "All the pillows in the store are going up $10, so I need you all to go and put the new prices on them".

We're talking, stock that's been on the floor and in the back for awhile now.

Not new product coming into the store that is now more expensive to manufacture etc.

So I thought, "Look's like Pottery Barn is taking advantage of all the other companies hiking their prices up".

How convenient.

Thankfully, I found Very similar pillows for waaay less at Targhetto in Issaquah, from the Magnolia Home Collection which is pretty much Pottery Barnesque in looks and quality. Better waaay better prices. V

Did some shopping at WM after therapy on Friday, they scheduled me at 1:30 so I got out around 2:15. Store was packed but most people just had a few items in their carts. Still no biscuits but tons of crescent rolls. Lunch meats were spread thin and fewer choices. Link sausages were $7 per link and they still had almost a whole cold box full of them.
Saw many going thru the meat section but most were picking up pork if they got any thing. They need a cardiac unit in the meat section with their prices. We just went in and got what we needed didn't hit every aisle. Bread and veggie aisles loked fully stocked. Thursday is truck day down here.

Yesterday our Kroger ( central Indiana) was normal in appearances except once again, for the meat cases. Beef is not only $$$$ but the selection is down to few items. And those items are placed strategically to fill in the holes or “on sale” which isn’t even a sale, in my book. Not at these prices.

Chicken normal, pork normal. Pork is still the best value.

I have been reading how there are food shortages all over the country. My wife shops at our local Kroger every Saturday morning and there are very few things missing on their shelves. Another friend went to a VG's. in Genesee and took pictures of bare shelves. Anyone know or have a guess as to what is actually going on with these shortages? I'm just curious. We still get extra non perishable goods and store them but so far have not been worried.

From my daughter's accounts she goes to 3 stores to fill out her weekly list. I have not been in a store since Feb 2020.
Right now bacon, cottage cheese and canned biscuits are whats missing.

Personally, I think it may be somewhere between actual shortages and intentional shortages. I'm glad I'm stocked up and try to replace when I can, what may be less and less possible. I've panicked in the past and gone crazy, but I just don't get too excited about it anymore.

I don't really see it either, but working people all hit the store at the same time, so late afternoon/evening, weekends and pre-holidays are bad, and I think suburban and high population areas are bad.

I shop on "off" days, mostly at a little country four-corner local-regional chain, my little whistle-stop meat store, and in farm/Rez town, which is small and relatively sane.

I think it is real whether it's caused by actual shortages or some government carp it is real at the retail level. I've heard too often from too many different stores that they order but they never know what they'll get. Sometimes it is a full order, sometimes nothing and sometimes a short order.

A few items have been missing for a very long time. For instance, canning lids have been MIA for two years, but are now showing up in stores again. Could be because other companies besides Ball, Kerr and Golden Harvest are manufacturing them, but its Ball I've been seeing in the stores. A vlog I follow the lady has been receiving lids from forjars.com and has been using them with good results.

It's also difficult to know if empty shelves are due to product shortages or lack of employees to stock the shelves.

I go with the hit or miss. Ordering via Instacart is a crapshoot. Definitely a canned cat food shortage. 1 item of something in a whole grocery store is a shortage. Also seeing delivery problems or store manager incompetence or something. Got me.

Saved, to glorify God.
it dosnt matter if its on the store shelf or not if it costs $48 or $80 for a dozen ($1) cans of sardines or $4 for a 3oz, $.35 can of potted meat or 1
$124 for 12 cans of 5oz chicken meat it might as well be not on the shelf. Prices
are going CRAZY for any kind of PROTEIN!

Check out amazon canned meat, EVEN USED TO BE CHEAP TUNA FISH!
My grocery supermarket is out of top ramen.

TIP: Hormel Potted meat, used to be $.25-.35 a 3oz can but is so salty you cant really make a sandwich with it. It is NOW $ .60-$.85 a can It is 10 grams of Protein which you HAVE TO HAVE Protein, snd if you dont have a lot of money you can MIX POTTED MEAT into spaghetti sauce or mixed with mashed potatoes or baked potatoes or beans will cancel the saltiness, in soup or mixed with rice or noodles will also kill the saltiness. Two cans for two people.

IMHO, PET FOOD,WET FOR SURE, DRY MAYBE , IS MADE FROM SCRAP PEOPLE FOOD, WAY BOTTOM OF THE BARREL SCRAP

SO

IF THEY DO NOT PROCESS PEOPLE FOOD

THEY HAVE NO SCRAPS TO MAKE PET FOOD

WITHOUT USING REAL FOOD

IF THEY HAVE REAL FOOD.............MOST WOULD PROCESS IT AS PEOPLE FOOD

IMO, the cheaper the store the more shortages. Probably because they get hit harder by more people. I used to work at a Kroger store and their stuff was always higher than Walmart. I see shortages at Walmart and Aldi, but not at a small chain store in my town where the prices are very much more expensive. In fact the only time I darken their doors is to buy their loss leader meat sales.

Also they tend to pay less for the product they sell, so they are lower on the supply chain.

Potted meat spread on crackers or white bread with just a touch of mustard is fine eating in the deer stand or fishing boat.. I think its the chicken lips and azzholes that make it salty.

I personally think it’s regional and it also seems to be the Walmarts that have the totally bare shelves.
I can easily agree with the first part of your statement, but not the second. Our local walmart has everything we want or need. But yeah walmart in other places of the country, not so much.

Except for family size Chicken Noodle Soup. Regular size is in stock. All of our yogurt is in stock, and plentiful.

But if that gets low it will be like saying "your grandma can't cook". It'll be on.

I've got some swanson's potted type meat in cans and its so salty. I'm gonna add some to mashed potatoes and see how that goes. Thanks for the suggestion. Last year I bought a couple of cases of potted meat for just in case. I'll try that in something else too.

it looks like vienna sausage could still be consider cheap, but it's probably almost doubled in price. I have some on the shelf but haven't eaten any in years.

Some of the shortages comes from customers paying more attention to empty or near empty shelves. I have always paid attention to this and I notice grocers fronting shelves to make them appear full when they are actually almost bare. Some paper products are near gone to gone and if you can find them very expensive. (Paper plates) More people are hoarding or buying large quantities of items to be prepared. I still shop at stores that have better than competitors prices and buy on sale or with the rare coupon when I can get it. Most coupons are for a specific store only (Krogers comes to mind) or use digital coupons good only in a specific store. We are getting to the point where impulse buying is going to break the bank or not allow us to buy what we really want. The days of a $1 pack of hot dogs or $1.50 bologna are over and forget $.50 a can tuna.

Western OK, by and large the two grocery stores in my town (pop approx 10k) are usually out/low on a number of items everyday. Drive an hour or so east to the Oklahoma City metro area grocery are significantly better stocked. So when I do have to go into OKC I will often hit Winco to further add to the pantry. I've seen entire dairy coolers empty here in town as well as meat. So it depends on where you are. I work in food service at a D2 state college and we have serious issues for over a year getting products of all types. Every week we are forced to switch products, adjust menus, etc in order to keep the students fed.

Every single time I'm on one of the "shortage" threads I give thanks for my pantry established further back than I can recall. My shopping list is mostly replacements for items used from the pantry. However, if those items are not available, I still have some on my pantry shelves.

Last week I bought 4 more long term storage items as an early birthday (or late Christmas!) gift to myself. I got butter powder, peaches, strawberries and carrots. The peaches and strawberries really enhance my oatmeal. I never buy the complete meals in a bag because they are way too salty and too large amount for one person. I don't have a large stock of long term cans but try to keep some on-hand at all times.

Kind of like the stories out of the cold war USSR? I keep an eye out for what on sale and scoop up what I can. Buy in bulk what I can preserve. Good luck to you and yours Ironskull.

In wisconsin they have this store called Woodmans. It is by far the best grocery store I have ever been to. They have everything, they beat everybody in pricing and have massive amounts of very niche dietary foods. Plus being in WI, they have every imaginable cheese construct and beef Jerkey/stick known to man. It really is quite impressive.

On The Level
Went to Hannafords in south central north-west Vt.
One thing I've noticed as continually being low stock there is the mayonnaise. It's there, you can get it, but there isn't a lot.
All the broccoli had huge stems. Will be curious to see how good it is. Strange thing is it was both the cut up florets in a bag and whole broccoli both. Late harvested maybe?
Got one of the last several 2% milk gallons. That'll likely be restocked soon.
Been drinking diet cola again. The Diet Pepsi six pack 16oz bottles were all on the shelf upside down! Don't know if there was reason or the stocker was just messing around. For whatever reason the Diet Coke was 40 cents cheaper than Diet Pepsi. Went with that. Wish I would have stuck with the more expensive upside Pepsi.
All in all the place looked in good shape. Suppose it's the new normal now that there are occasional holes or few choices.

Mayonaise was also something that the stock was low on and one whole brand of salad dressings was empty at my walmart yesterday. I did buy a jar of the mayo I like and miracle whip (gag) for DH although we were not close to being out. I just can't seem to stop prepping, LOL

I couldn't find Duke's mayo at my walmart, so I went online. I always only buy from retailer "Walmart", no pro-sellers (I got scammed once by a pro-seller, they sent an empty package. And even tho Walmart made it right, it was a hassle).

Almost nothing except lo-sugar or olive oil. Then I spotted a jar for $10.28, expensive but ok I bought two. They came a couple of days ago, and they're GALLONS. Omg, what am I going to do with gallons of mayo :shr: .
