CHAT Not in the Thanksgiving Mood this Year

I’m back, too! While dining on that home canned cabbage-tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwich, feeling a bit sorry for lonely little me, the doorbell rang......it was the son who still lives in the area....they had stopped at Cracker Barrel and brought me a complete meal, incl. a piece of yummy pumpkin pie......PLUS an entire pecan pie! Talk about a nice surprise! ( I know that CoVid keeps them from inviting me over., hence, life gets a bit lonely on special holidays.)

Wow! I was able to find enough room in my frig for the entire meal for tomorrow, and even the whole pecan pie!

On a different topic, has anyone here ever added chopped walnuts to pumpkin pies? I was thinking of doing that....sounds good to me.

I haven't made this because I save my calories for the side dishes, but it looks great!

All those "don't celebrate Thanksgiving" types in the government seemed to have forgotten that there's room for love and charity even without getting everyone in the same room. Fine news, and thank you for it!

I'm in WNY.

I heard my kitchen door open this morning which woke me up, then I fell back a sleep. Got up to make coffee and found the X wife had left me a birthday present. A case of cat food and a bag of groceries full of veg and fruit along with a card. Also a few mini pies so I have something to put my 60 year candle on. Same candle we had on my moms birthday cake a few decades ago. Had no beer for tonight so I hopped on the ten speed and rode 1.5 miles into town in a light mist and found Dollar General was still open. Would you believe I was asked for an ID? And, my license expired today. Stopped at the post office as I came home and there was my renewal notice. Now if I could just get my truck back on the road.
Get the truck fixed and next year come on down to Ga. It's nice this time of year. Bring the cat.

Thanks AlfaMan! I get really angry at myself because I have absolutely nothing to be depressed about. But it hits every year in November and starts to lift when the daffodils pop up. I'm already ready for daffodils!

Our local Lowe's (home improvement store) has a hot house and they have orchids and cacti and there is ALWAYS something blooming. When I get so depressed that I can't stand it, I go and stand in there for 15 minutes or so. It really helps my mood. I hope you feel better.

Don't get mad at yourself! You know the reason. It's alright. Keep taking the supplements. I don't know what you are taking, but look into light therapy and have your thyroid checked. All of those have a huge difference with s.a.d.

Yup. I second that. Had to move out of Western Ma because it was infested with libera overcast for 6 months of the year. Suffered from Depression most of my teenage years.
Moved South and haven't been depressed a day since.
I've been sad, and grieved, but not depressed.
Vitamin D and being outside in the sunshine is a big factor for mental health.

It gets dark real early here in mn, and the sun doesn't come up till late.

Lots of people up here have issues with s.a.d. it isn't always depression, but that is one symptom. I don't get depressed but my body hurts more and I am more tired. There are other manifestations, and I also have a thyroid problem. Lots of crossover symptoms there. That's why I suggested having your thyroid checked. People that have an under active thyroid may be able to push through and shake off the low function in the spring and summer but fall and winter are horrible. But the light therapy is really do very wonderful for so many things. There are LOTS of great ready made products, but if you need help making some yourself, let me know. Infrared light therapy and saunas are also extremely helpful.

Exercise. I just cannot stress that one enough! It is truly remarkable what regular exercise does for your entire body, you mental health included! You don't have to be a maniac and be working out all the time. If you like that, great! But a walk (preferably outside) every day for 20-30 min does wonders!

Don't feel bad. There is a clear and very real reason. Would you feel bad for not being able to walk if you only had one leg? We can work on this to help improve things! You can feel better. Don't give up!

After killing half the Kraken bottle (please pray for me - this has got to stop) and dealing with a "Happy Thanksgiving to you," text at 12:01 am, from the soon to be Ex, and a reply to him at 4 am, it's onward and upward. Had a few hours sleep.

It's easier to cope with things when you are well-rested. Unless you need to be on call in the wee hours, consider turning off the sound on your phone when you go to bed. I haven't buried an ax in anyone's head since I started muting calls and notifications at night.

I admire your 4 a.m. reply. Nicely done!

Yes, I do have hypothyroid and take the meds for it. It's strange, I used to live up in northern NH and didn't have any problems. Even though the days were shorter than here in Virginia, it was always very bright with snow on the ground for months. Here, no snow yet and we're in a hollow so at this time of year until mid January the sun barely makes it over the ridge. It kind of goes around just bellow the tree tops all day. I have some of those lights on a string. I'm going to hang them behind my chair here, see if that helps. We have a lot of farm animals to tend to- pigs, goats, horses, sheep, chickens and quail. I must walk at least two miles a day just doing chores. Hubby thought we may need to cut back but I told him NO, I need outside chores to keep me going! Don't want to have to join a gym :)

Yup. That light sounds like the bugger!

Barely reaching over the ridge? Oh yah! You are gonna need bright light, a lot, and fir a long time! And I don't know how your Dr is, but many think "it's in the range, they are fine"

Except many are not. If you are borderline or just inside the range, see if you can up it or perhaps get liothyronine. It is wonderful to get that thyroid not just in the range, but where you feel good again!

Not sure what kind of lights you have but make sure they are the correct frequency and brightness level. Big hugs from me!

Meemur, thanks much for the recipe for Struesel Walnut Pumpkin Pie...it DOES look like a winner! I can see where the Struesel would add a lot!

Mary Contrary, I have a confession to make....in reading your post, #222 (I haven't figured out how to add previous posts without cutting and pasting, and yours is rather long.)....when I read it, I laughed so hard, I cried! Which is probably sinful, and I certainly don't see anything funny about your lack of appliances, it's the style you have of telling about them! I got to thinking your little essay would be great fodder for a stand-up comedian! You may have missed your calling!

Yep overcast by afternoon most days. Most of Winter is just grey.
Spring and Summer? It rains every Saturday. Pretty much a law of nature in MA.

Me and mrs. were ok till yesterday laughing about having thanksgiving together her getting the pies and dressing done. Me helping when asked generally fun day, then my 44yr old daughter called bawling and sqawling like a little girl. momma I miss you you and daddy it doesn't feel right y'all not being here. That put a damper on the thanksgiving mood for both of us.
They're ALWAYS YOUR "kids", no matter how old, and you always wish you could fix the world for them. You can't- but you sure wish you could!

Nice, quiet day here. Hubby has COVID, so isn't feeling great. But he helped with the meal preps, so we had the full Thanksgiving meal... Turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, squash, cranberry sauce and pumpkin and Apple pies. Gonna be lots of leftovers for freezer meals. Looking forward to seeing everyone at Christmas!

No reason to be angry... it's just a chemical reaction many have to the shorter, dark days.

Have you tried taking L-tyrosine? It's an amino acid, and it works amazingly well on SADD, as well as other forms of depression. 1000-1500 mgs a day keeps us going in the winter, and we'd really struggle otherwise.

I not only read it, I lived it for a few years, until I came up with enough money to leave Lansing, MI during the recession and get a hospital job up in Mt. Pleasant. Glad I was young then. I don't think I could do that now. I'd have to move somewhere a lot warmer.

For that lifestyle to work, you have to live somewhere where people have money. That is, there is no point in dumpster diving if all there is in there is truly garbage. It also helps to know something about electrical power. There are right ways and wrong ways to go about stealing the neighbor's electricity. No, I'm not going into that online, and I'll never do that again. I'm lucky to be alive.

People leave their phone on when in bed? Not me. I turn it completely off.

No guests, no dishes.

Opened the windows, washed and pressed the curtains, changed the bed linens, put a new cover on the ironing board.

Listening to Glenn Miller and Bennie Goodman. Might as well be 1945. I'm okay with that.

It's all good.
I absolutely LOVE Glenn Miller! My favorite 1940's tune is American Patrol!!!! I could listen to it over and over and over.
