Spent time with our Citizens Academy Alumni folks this evening. Our liaison guy (training captain with other full plate stuff) commented that the guys are REAL concerned about the Cali attempted execution. This along with everything ELSE cops have to be concerned with. Just a grass roots comment.

I put this video of the two policepeople after they were shot on the thread yesterday, but this video lets you stay on site to see it. . . : (

ETA: My understanding has been the videos are from the MLK transit station cameras where they were parked at time of ambush. . .

give this female cop an award. She never gave up. Kept fighting through everything, even though shot. She's a freaking badass. Saved herself. Saved her partner.

That video shreds my heart!
He is trying to get back into the fight and chase the shooter and is likely only half there mentally, and she is trying to keep him somewhat shielded so he can survive and get back into it LATER. PLUS SHE is staying in it to protect HIM.

That is AWESOME HEART in that lady. Just proves that skin color does NOT indicate ngr-hood.

This story suggests both that a connection to the ambush has repeatedly been denied, and that authorities are increasingly confident that there is a connection. Hopefully it's resolved with no more bleedin' or burnin'..

The LA County Sheriff's SWAT team are in a standoff with a carjacking suspect who could be linked to the Compton gunman who shot two deputies in the head at the weekend, according to several law enforcement sources.
A search is currently underway in a residential area of Lynwood after an armed carjacker who led cops on a high speed chase Tuesday is thought to be connected to the ambush that left the LA cops fighting for their lives in hospital.

Two officers - 31-year-old Claudia Apolinar and her 24-year-old male colleague – were shot multiple times as they sat inside their patrol car outside the Metro Blue Line station at Willowbrook Avenue and Oak Street Saturday night.
Shocking surveillance footage captured the moment the black male suspect strolled up to the police cruiser and gunned the officers down at close range before fleeing the scene on foot.
Both officers survived and are said to be in a stable condition in hospital while a massive manhunt is underway for the gunman, who authorities said is between the ages of 28 and 30.

Authorities are increasingly confident that the suspected carjacker involved in a police chase Tuesday and now thought to be hiding out in a Lynwood home was involved in Saturday's attack on the deputies, law enforcement sources told NBC Los Angeles.

LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva has repeatedly denied any connection between the carjacking suspect and the gunman.
Villanueva, who challenged LeBron James to match a reward to find the suspect earlier this week, told several media outlets Tuesday the two incidents were unrelated but provided no further details about the carjacker.
However, multiple sources have confirmed the male suspect is wanted in connection with the weekend ambush but the sheriff's department is not yet ready to provide details to the public.

A huge search is now underway in Lynwood for the armed suspect who was allegedly driving a light blue Toyota coupe through Lynwood.
LA County Sheriff’s Department deputies were in hot pursuit of the vehicle, which the driver then crashed along the 3100 block of Carlin Avenue.

Police sources said the driver fled from the vehicle into a nearby home or condo.
Officers evacuated people out of the area as the SWAT team prepared to search nearby homes for the suspect.
Aerial footage showed multiple police cars continued to be on the scene as darkness fell, while the suspect's vehicle could be seen abandoned in the road.
It is not clear what initially led to the chase and no further details have yet been released.

Police are searching for two main suspects involved in Saturday's ambush - the gunman and a suspected getaway driver who was seen driving the gunman away from the scene in a dark Mercedes.
The investigation has so far focused on two prominent Compton street gangs, sources said.
It was previously suggested that the shooting was a revenge attack for one of the spate of recent deaths of black men and women at the hands of cops across America.

Apolinar, a mother of a six-year-old, and her colleague each sustained multiple gunshot wounds in Saturday's attack.
The two cops - who both graduated from the Los Angeles Police Academy last year - both underwent surgery and are now in a stable condition.
Video released by cops showed the suspect approaching an LACSD vehicle parked outside the Metro Blue Line station and opening fire before he fled.

Despite taking multiple bullets – one to the face and several to her upper torso – Apolinar managed to get her partner to safety, apply a tourniquet and radio for help.
A photo of the aftermath of the attack shows Apolinar covered in blood, giving medical help to her injured partner who was also struck in the head.

A harrowing dispatch call reveals a shaky voice called in the shooting, muttering: '998 Compton Pax.'
Recognizing the code for a deputy-involved shooting, a dispatcher asks: 'Just happened?'
The voice replies, almost unintelligibly, 'Compton Pax, deputies down. Compton Pax 998.'
The suspect, meanwhile, is described as a black male between 28 and 30 years old.

He was wearing dark clothing at the time of the shooting and was last seen in a black four-door sedan.
Fox News reporter William la Jeunesse said Monday: 'Los Angeles police will not say this publicly - but some believe this ambush was retaliation for some recent police shootings of black suspects in LA.'
On August 31 black man Dijon Kizzee was shot and killed by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies after he was stopped for a traffic violation while riding a bike.

At the beginning of this month the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors also voted to ask the coroner to conduct an inquest into the fatal deputy shooting of 18-year-old Andres Guardado on June 18.
Thousands have taken to the streets demanding justice and calling for an end to police brutality and racism since May following the 'murder' of black man George Floyd by a Minneapolis cop who knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes until he passed out and died.

Floyd's death reignited outrage over the death of EMT Breonna Taylor, 26, who was shot eight times while sleeping in her bed when three plain clothes officers performed a no-knock arrest warrant at her Louisville apartment on March 13.
In June, unarmed father Rayshard Brooks was shot dead while he ran away from cops in the drive-thru of a Wendy's restaurant in Atlanta.
On August 23, Jacob Blake was shot seven times in the back by a white cop in front of his three young children, leaving the father-of-six paralyzed from the waist down.

A week later on August 30, Dijon Kizzee, 29, was gunned down in the street by LA cops who allegedly shot him 20 times and then handcuffed his dead body after trying to pull him over for an alleged bicycle code violation.
In early September, footage was released by the family of Daniel Prude, 41, showing cops in Rochester, New York, putting a spit hood over his face and pushing his face into the ground for two minutes until he passed out and died on March 23.
The Monroe County medical examiner listed the manner of death as homicide caused by 'complications of asphyxia in the setting of physical restraint' but no charges have been brought against any of the cops.

Not the shooting suspect.
Los Angeles-area authorities Tuesday evening apprehended a suspected armed carjacker in an all-day standoff

The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department said deputies have been looking for the suspect since the first of the month and there is no evidence connecting the suspect to the shooting of two sheriff's deputies over the weekend, according to FOX 11 in Los Angeles.

The department said the alleged carjacker is a suspected gang member who was armed with a rifle, FOX 11 reported.

The suspect was taken into custody in Lynwood not far from Compton where the shooting happened Saturday evening.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva told several news outlets earlier that the suspect is not linked to the ambush shooting of two transit deputies in Compton Saturday. However, KNBC-TV reported that multiple law enforcement sources said detectives are increasingly confident the suspect, who led authorities on a car chase Tuesday, is connected.

During the chase, the suspect reportedly jumped out of the vehicle and ran into a home in the Los Angeles suburb of Lynwood.

Sheriffs & Media Misidentify Innocent Compton Man as Cop Shooter

33-year-old Compton native, Darnell Hicks, had no idea why his phone was blowing up Sunday night. Like every Sunday, he was working the swing shift as a client aide at a South Centra L.A. transitional housing program, when all of a sudden, he started receiving back-to-back text messages and social media notifications. Darnell could hardly believe what he was reading–that he was wanted in the shooting of two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies as they sat in a patrol SUV at the Compton Willowbrook rail station.

“I was shocked and worried,” said Hicks. “So, I hurried up and googled the number to the Compton Sheriff’s Station and called in. I told them that there are social media posts saying that I was wanted for shooting the two sheriff’s deputies. I wanted to know if it was true.”
He said the watch commander told him he’d call him back. Two hours later, Hicks received a call back asking if the watch commander could come to his job. “They said they wouldn’t come with a lot of sheriffs–that it would just be two people,” explained Hicks.

By the time they came to his job, Darnell was receiving death threats on social media and his home address had been published online by a right-wing extremist Twitter influencer named Ian Miles Cheong. “It was crazy because I live with my parents and my grandmother.” Darnell’s mother was a nervous wreck.
“He called and asked me if I had looked on Facebook and I said no,” explained Pamela Clayton-Hicks, Darnell’s mother. “They had his face all on their on social media, talking about he was the one that shot the two cops. And I just got my husband and told him, ‘come on, let’s go down to the sheriff’s station and see what’s going on before anything get out of control.’ We all live at the same house together with my 93-year-old mother and I take care of my mentally ill brother, and the sheriffs could have come in there and shot everybody in my mother’s house, not knowing who they were really looking for.”
Darnell said he hadn’t been anywhere near the Compton Blue Line station on Saturday. Like most Saturday nights, he was out dirt biking with his friends through Compton and Watts.
When the sheriffs finally arrived at his job, Darnell said they apologized for the situation.
“The first thing the sheriff’s deputy said to me when he got out of the car was, ‘You’re a lot taller than our suspect.’”
Standing at 6 feet tall, Darnell’s dark skin was the only other characteristic that matched the suspect wanted. Initially, the sheriff’s department said they were looking for a “dark skinned male.” They later clarified their description by saying “Black male.”
After getting home from work, Darnell said he was too worried too sleep. The social media chatter hadn’t died down and he was still receiving threats and calls from friends.
“I probably didn’t fall asleep until 7:30 in the morning on Monday.”
After speaking with his former basketball coach from Double Rock Baptist Church, whom he still kept in touch with, Darnell reached out to the Cochran Firm for legal advice and direction on how to clear his name and hopefully save his reputation.
Renard Smith, a Compton resident and Darnell’s former coach said, “I was shocked because out of all the youth basketball players I’ve coached in Compton, Darnell was not a kid involved with guns, drugs or gangs. When I initially spoke to him about this, after seeing it on social media, his response was very casual. I knew then, he didn’t fully understand the seriousness of this issue. As a Black man, I also realized that this could be something recurring since the sheriffs have been known to show signs of aggression and retaliation towards residents.”

The father of two daughters, Darnell added, “I have a lot I’m working on. I coach football, I’m a rapper and I have my own clothing line, Uno Mas. I am also a photographer; I sell hair and I do taco catering. I do it all. I try to stay busy.”
“He has no connection whatsoever,” said Brian Dunn, managing partner of The Cochran Firm. “Any person would suffer greatly when falsely accused of a crime and especially a crime as heinous as this. He simply has been thrown into this but for nothing other than the color of his skin. There has been a complete blackout in terms of the information coming out. No one has taken responsibility for it.”
It appears that the social media post identifying Darnell Hicks as the shooter came from someone named Floyd Bradford and the Lakewood CA. Regional Crime Awareness, Prevention & Safety Group, which boasts over 18k members on Facebook.

Compton Mayor Aja Brown said, “Unfortunately, the available description offered of the suspect is limited and many people fit this profile. I strongly urge dark-skinned Black male residents of Compton to be cautious during this time.”
Mrs. Clayton-Hicks continued, “I have three sons and my sons were never out there doing things like that. They always did something positive and I love all six of mine and I don’t want no harm to come to mine.”
She said since her son’s story is coming out in the news, she is more at ease.

“I watch everything moving,” she said. “Anything moving, I am always watching.”
Attorney Brian Dunn plans to request that the Sheriff’s Department’s Civilian Oversight Commission open an investigation to see if the misidentification of Darnell Hunt originated with the sheriffs.
“I just want to send my prayers to the two deputies that were injured in this incident,” said Hicks. “I want them to know that I’m innocent and it doesn’t have nothing to do with me. For every other Black man out there, be aware because the description was a Black male, so it can happen to anybody.”
As of Sentinel press time, no suspects have been identified. The sheriff’s department issued a statement early Monday, saying the information circulating online about Darnell Hicks “is ERRONEOUS information and there are no named or wanted suspects at this time.”
That hasn’t stopped Darnell from receiving death threats.
