Only worry about what you can control!
Canning Jars and Lids
Ammo / Reloading Primers

If you run into something that is an essential prep but can't be found list it here. If you know where some can be found reply to the poster that listed it.

It is interesting how fast the shelves are drying up on the things we have all prepped for years.

I give up.
Well, I know people have mentioned shoes (and probably boots) so far. When we moved down here, I didn't bring any shoes or even my favorite boots because I just don't need those here. Went and bought some tennis shoes and sandals before all this Covid trash hit. I don't THINK I need anything else, but it worries me for everyone else.

The other thing I've noticed is that as soon as the bug hit, all the ladies' panties seemed to disappear unless you wear a size 5, which nobody but midgets wear. Thank GOD I had stocked up with a few dozen pairs in packages I still haven't opened.

So this means look out for socks and other underwear, just in case. Get some before they run out. I know a lot of clothes come from countries other than China, but still.............

Saved, to glorify God.
There's never a shortage of CANNING STUFF at about half the ESTATE / MOVING SALES.
Sometimes people even advertise "divorce sale" and it can be surprising what shows up there very cheap.
"Downsizing" is also a key word to push that sale to the top of your list.
Estate, moving, downsizing, and divorce should be the first one's you check out.
The general yard and garage sales should come later.

A LOT of the baking items are getting short supplied, especially bread machine yeast (I'm blaming Dennis on this one). And I have met a BUNCH of people in the stores looking for "staples" like bread machine ingredients. One lady was frantically searching on her phone to see if "regular" yeast would work in a bread machine the same way. She found a few different sites with differing opinions but decided to buy a handful of packets anyway. I asked her why she was so worried about it and she mentioned about the riots spreading and street wars breaking out. I asked her if she had a generator, and what she planned to do with her bread machine if the power went out for a long period of time. Her face went white. I told her that it was possible to mix by hand and then use her propane grill to do the baking if she was careful in setting the temp right (as in low) and keeping the lid closed. I then told her that she should really start reading up on the internet on how to do things with no power or no water service while she still had internet...

Trying to hang out with the cool kids.
Disinfectant wipes have been MIA since late March. Flour and yeast have made a comeback. Starting to notice fewer/smaller battery displays in my local supermarket. There used to be a BIG rack near the check out area with the usual AA,AAA, 9V, etc.
It has been moved to the back of the store and is not well stocked.

What really spooked me during this whole pandemic thing is when I could not find EGGS for 3 weeks!

It's hard to find rubbing alcohol in our area. The dollar store clerks told me, it usually sales within a few hours, after they stock the shelves with it, after it comes in. Their truck only run twice a week from the wholesale warehouse.

I had not bought any rubbing alcohol since March, until two weeks ago. I ask the IGA store clerk, when was they going to get some rubbing alcohol in. She said the truck had came in the night before and they stocked shelves with it. I told her it was all gone off the bottom shelve She said, I think we still have some. She went back and sure enough, she found 3 little bottles near the back of the bottom shelve. I bought all three of them. Since then, no more rubbing alcohol to be found anywhere.

As for eggs... Look for the powdered/camping/back packing variants

Thanks.

WalMart has the blue label on line but not the red. It's the double pack.

The red label is what I need. I use it in my business for a disinfectant among other things and also make my own wipes with it. Just put a package of good quality baby wipes in a freezer bag, pour 12 ounces of red label alc. in with the wipes and seal them until the wipes have soaked all the alcohol up. Best wipes ever.

Edited to add: Do not substitute the blue label 70% alcohol for the above recipe for wipies. There is already enough liquid in the wipies to dilute it down to the 70% needed to kill covid. They will still work with the 70% but will be a little weaker.

Plastic containers, especially bottles are in very short supply...need those also for my business. The bottles are all going to companies that make hand sanitizer right now...at least that is what I'm hearing from my suppliers.

Edited to add: Trampolines and above ground swimming pools. If you have a used one you'd like to get rid of, you will get a good price. At least that is what we are hearing.

Check smaller outlets like CVS and Walgreens... I recently scored eight 16 ounce bottles of 70% at a local CVS

I have had good luck with that

Red Label is 90% which is ineffective against COVID.

You need a 66-80% mixture ( I believe ... Check with Summerthyme ) to be effective but I know the 90% is too potent. You need a certain amount of water to break the outer "shell" of the virus and then the alcohol goes in to kill the virus...

Same here. Not a drop here. I'd been looking for some for a couple weeks, all my local grocery stores, all the DG's in my AO. I asked my local Dollar General girl if they had any in the back, she said, with a weird look on her face, that they had some in the back, but they were told NOT to put them out. I asked why, she said, she didn't know. my daughter found 3 teeny tiny bottles, and gave me one. I check every time I go out to shop, shelves still empty.
I needed some toothpicks for a recipe using beef strips....checked my locals, no toothpicks. I ended up buying the last 3 packs of wooden skewers and made them work, broke them in half, used a pencil sharpener to make a point.

To answer the yeast question: yes you can use regular yeast or even sourdough starter in a bread baker.

Older books before "rapid start" yeast became "bread machine yeast" have this but basically you just remember that 1/4 of your liquid needs to be used to "proof" the yeast in a separate little bowl for about 10 to 15 minutes when it bubbles it is ready to start.

Sourdough on its own is trickier and I'll save that for a real bread making thread but it can be done, it is just easier if you add commercial-rapid rise yeast.

You left scars on that lady....lol. Hopefully it will cause her to think a little deeper once she starts being able to sleep again... I use the Great Depression as my model, those folks made it through on the technology they had, so I have always set my preps that direction. Knowledge is survival.

Did see canning jars and lids in a few places this week. Ball in Muncie warehouse is out, in Utah warehouse they have some but won't get stocked back up until winter. Canning lids went from 1.79 to 3.79 a box this year

Check Walmart.com for laundry sanitizer. It’s hit or miss there, but they do have it. Our local hardware store has had pallets of canning jars this year. Need to get more. Would love to get my hands on some cleaning wipes, also just some regular cleaning spray. Not some weird off brand.

From time to time I find entire flats of lids and also jars just sitting on the shelf at Walmart... I should be in good shape for quite a while but I still buy extras when I see them. I usually buy everything in bulk from Wholesale Glass Containers, Lids, & More | Fillmore Container (Fill More Containers) but they are out of stock like everyone else right now.

It may take some hunting around, but I bet you can find someone you can buy eggs from directly. They will probably cost more, but they're fresher and much better quality eggs. My farm friends get $5 a dozen.
Powdered eggs may be ok for baking, but I doubt I could eat them alone even if I was starving. I don't eat grocery store eggs either. When my hens stop laying, I quit eating eggs.

On the shortage of lumber, especially treated lumber, do any insiders know why these are in short supply?

I do know here locally they are throwing up new houses as fast as possible and maybe all of our sales and marketing people ‘working from home’ are all building decks and fences on company time but it seems there is something else.

I found Jars and Lids at Runnings

Walmart in our area has some weird shortages:
Fishing tackle and gear is almost totally gone - been like that since March
Sewing supplies are low stock now
clothing brands offered are different.
