DISASTER China's Three Gorge Dam in Danger

.Not enough information to answer the question but two observations:
  • There is an obvious effort in at least the last two days (the graphic only goes back 2-1/2 days) to manage more water in the reservoir. Could be many reasons - out of concerns downstream, opening up new storage upstream (previous post showing levy demo), etc.
  • Note the scale on the graphic - the water surface elevation only ranges from 158.6 M to 160.2 M - only a 1.6 M range. IIRC the dam crest is at 185 M; there's 25 meters or 82' of available freeboard to work with/manage the flows downstream.

One of the gates were closed sometime last night. There was a comment on the live YouTube feed that it had been closed due to cavitation damage and other gates had been opened further. If you feel like going back, it's around page 31.

I'm not questioning which gates are open or closed, and I suspect there's cavitation. Per the graphic, inflow and outflow match, and countrymouse seems to be saying they can't bring them into sync.

I don't understand. Per the graphic, the inflow and outflow match within a couple thousand cubic meters per second. That's pretty good, considering the inflow is such a guesstimate.
Per the graphic legend the outflow is the red line, the inflow is denoted by the green points. Screwy choice of graphing but likely because the lines are real-time measured data, the dots are calculated estimates).

I haven't commented at all on inflow / outflow.

To be honest, I don't even give those charts much attention; because, as Mark Twain said, "Lies, damn lies, and statistics."

But what I DO believe is my eyes.

And i've SEEN---over the past week of watching:

1. the water go form pure white (white-water) flowing out of the dam, to definite shading with light reddish-brown. (cavitation)

2. An INCREASE in "objects" being thrown out from the dam--PARTICULARLY from the floodgate "farthest away" from our perspective as we look at the video (if you were FACING the dam it'd be the one farthest to your right). At first--just a few, now and then. Then--several every day. Then--as a member posted JUST THIS MORNING (it's somewhere in the posts put up since this morning, so not too hard to go back & find)---the dam was literally SPEWING chunks.

3. In response to the above--the "spewing chunks"--about 7 am this morning our time (19:00 hours China time--see the video) they CLOSED DOWN "most" of the floodgates. Then they reopened them--but not ALL of them.

4. Logic here---First, WHY did they close down ANY floodgates? Logically, because it was a greater danger leaving them OPEN than leaving them shut. Second, WHY did they NOT shut down the Floodgate THAT IS SPEWING THE MOST CHUNKS? (and therefore, one would think, the one in the worst condition of capitation). Logical answer? Because they CAN'T---it's too damaged to close.

5. The Chinese--JUST SINCE 10 am this morning (my time-EDT) have CHANGED THE TIMESTAMP on the video. Up until this morning, 3GD was EXACTLY 12 hours AHEAD of my time on EDT---if they were 12 PM, I was 12 AM, etc. But sometime after 10 am this morning, they set it for a 1 minute delay. So now---my current time is 4:20 pm; the timestamp on the dam video is 4:19.

So, as I said--we are now on a deathwatch.

Catastrophic atmospheric river headed for Chengdu China, up stream of 3 Gorges Dam, 4' of rain in 2 days expected

Video. Can’t copy, on phone. Radar shows huge storm bearing down on China. Biggest dark red blob I’ve ever seen.

I'm not quoting Scripture, but if this comment is too "religious" for the thread let me know & I'll remove it.

I was thinking (while out riding around on my lawn mower a few moments ago) how ironic it is---and how we would not have believed it, even if God had told us how He was going to allow His judgment to come.

A device used to collect water.........in order to control water............and technology used to heat water (for power).....will be DESTROYED by water............that will flow down to the sites of this technology and irredeemably (for any repair w/i man's power, anyway) pollute 1/3 of the EARTH's ocean water.

Destroying water with......water.

We wouldn't have believed it if He'd told us.

Rather profound, I'll be mulling that over for awhile.

Also how ironic if the dam, and its designer, were to die on the same day....(I believe he "just" passed away, but if that's wrong and it was several days ago, never mind....)

Two more hours or so till dawn at 3GD...

Been listening to the steady roar, punctuated at uneven intervals by a change in tone (designating that the channel's blocked with some sort of large debris) then the "THUNK!" of it being ejected and the sound goes back to the normal "roar"....

Video, cannot get URL on phone. Have to wait until tonight when get computer.

Try holding your finger on the address bar for a second or two.

It should highlight the whole thing and give you a box with the "copy" option.

Hit "copy", then go to the reply box here and hold your finger in it for a second or two, it should give you a "paste" option.

Press that and done.

Dunno where the graphic came from showing a "Dam Collapse Alert - 175M".
From Britannica online.

Pretty good explanation of WSEL here:

To me the black debris coming out of the dam is just pixilation. It looks like it has been altered. I don't believe for a second Donald Trump would attack China via weather to take down the dam. It would destroy S Korea as well as eventually America and South America.

Quiet Man

Nothing unreal exists
The more I watch this video stream, the more I am convinced that the camera has firmware bug(s) in the encoding algorithm.
Here's another obvious example. Start 10 seconds before the timestamp. You will see these black 'blobs' appear, some seeming to move; others stationary. Note how the ones that appear to be on the lower part of the dam disappear instantly with no apparent motion. I'm convinced this is a firmware error and/or dropped frames (probably the latter), and that it is happening frequently.

Only problem with all of the above, Quiet Man.

As a member posted earlier today--

China has officially admitted that cavitation IS taking place.

If that be so---

Then what that means is that "chunks" are being dug out from underneath the dam.

Why would China admit such a thing if it were not true?

I agree that some of the oddities are pixelation, especially the the black ones and they occur a lot around the power lines. But what I was seeing yesterday evening, in the period before they closed the gate, was more likely debris. It could have come from the reservoir, but there were chunks coming out.

PS: I'm not seeing those same things this evening.

And then, just a few more seconds on, another where this massive 'chunk' appears, then disappears instantly.

These are not real physical occurrences. They are video artifacts.

Added: This is the stream I've followed for all of the above:

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fhddcv7p2QM

When I watch the video on Youtube (not TB) on a Win 10 OS running Firefox- I do not see these artifacts. What looks like a huge concrete chunk in the photos posted, looks like a small rooster tail of white water in the Youtube vid. It may have to do with what speed your monitor is set and whether you have enabled Flash. I have not.

I agree. I have it streaming on a 60 inch 4K TV now. It definitely pixelates At certain times. Especially with movement

7:47 am --- Dawn at Three Gorges--

can someone tell me what's up with the water coming down that "chute" thing on the left? (circled)

I've never noticed that before, but maybe it was because my attention was always on the floodgates, not above them, and maybe they only show in the morning (eastern) light--

If you run the video back to the timestamp below (Three Gorges Dam Stream (side angle)) you'll see water cascade down that "chute" thing several times.
