Has No Life - Lives on TB
That's what it is, though 16 hrs is more like it. The question I was asking was whether folk thought I would be able to successfully get all the way without being 'fined, arrested or impounded', as you say.
I would hope that since you are currently essential personnel and then will be released, that you could get home. Can you call the state police of the states you will be travelling through for suggestions?

That's a sound idea. You think police, or state highway patrol?

I must have watched a different one. Trump looked calm and explained himself very well. The reporters did the same thing they always do. I really think some of them or deaf. They all ask the same questions over and over and they have been answered multiple times. But sensationalism is what they thrive on. Like it or not, this disease is not a world ender. It will decline at some point, possibly earlier than you think. Why close down the whole country when most of the country has few or no cases?

To stop it from spreading to the parts of the country that currently have few or no cases.

Is there a way to check all cause mortality, month to month? I want to compare the all cause mortality rate from recent months to last year. I have suspicions that a lot of pneumonia and heart attacks were just swept away as normal. But we wouldn't know unless we compare year to year.
If you can access last March's obits from a newspaper, then check this March's obits it might give you a rough idea.

Well, 4 new deaths over the last day in my city Leeds, England bringing the total to 5 here, lucky I moved out to a little village about 12 miles away about 6 months ago, so a little safer than actually been in the city but it does worry me many people in the village travel to work in the city.

I am currently only going out for food and medication when needed and a quick walk while avoiding any people I come across while out.

Things are going to get worse as the lockdown is not a lockdown as such too many people still going out when they should not or companies are saying they are essential worker when they are not so they have to go in or lose their jobs.

Need better guidance from the Government on who and who is not an essential worker and I think sanctions should be used against companies that are not closing down that are not essential services or supply essential services. Longer people keep ignoring the guidance, will result in more deaths and suffering and longer still for us to start seeing a decline in cases. okay, rant over.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland Police Chief Jami Resch said calls for suicide attempts or suicide threats with or without a weapon are up 41% since this time in 2019 and 23% from the 10 days prior to the COVID-19 outbreak.

It's important that people check in on family and friends via phone, video chat, text or email, Resch said.

Resch also said there are free resources available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for those experiencing a mental health crisis or thoughts of suicide.

Resch shared some other key statistics:
  • Dispatched calls are 10% lower compared to the 10 days before the state of emergency declaration
  • Requests for emergency food boxes have increased more than six times for the same time period in 2019 and are up eight times from the 10 days prior to the emergency declaration. Resources: Sunshine Division has pick-up options, if someone is unable to pick-up, call non-emergency dispatch at 503-823-3333.
  • Domestic violence calls data is unavailable at this time due to different ways calls are coded. Resources: National Domestic Violence Hotline or Call to Safety
Resch made the comments during a press conference Tuesday with Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler and other city leaders.

In other news, Resch said officers have been instructed to use an educate-first approach to violators of Gov. Brown's stay-home executive order. Resch said the educate-first approach is especially important with the homeless population, who may not be aware of the order. Resch said if violators don't comply with warnings, officers will issue criminal citations for noncompliance.

Resch also said people should not call 911 to report people or businesses who aren't complying with the stay-home order. Those calls should go to the non-emergency line at 503-823-3333.

Wow, sorry to hear that MichaelUK. Off - topic, I love watching your Rugby League team, the Rhinos, over here, across the pond. I am "almost" to the point that I'd rather watch Super League than our NFL.

Edited to add: That is, if it were on... since it's shut down like practically every other sport now.

Some tidbits from Indiana's press conference today:

Dr Kristina Box, Indiana State Health Commissioner, was asked today why we weren't getting any info, such as comorbidity, etc, on the patients and she replied because they were not coded yet. They were in the process of doing so and that information would be forthcoming beginning April 1.

She also talked about testing and said if people have mild symptoms and can self-quarantine at home, they will not be tested. If they require hospitalization, then they will be tested. (So we'll never have a good idea of how many cases we've actually had?)

There was some talk that I missed about a homeless shelter. A reporter asked about its location and she said they were not releasing that information.

Los Angeles sheriff orders all gun stores shut down, and instructs deputies to enforce closures

Gun stores in Los Angeles have been declared a nonessential business and have been forced to close, L.A. County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said in a statement Tuesday.

Villanueva also announced the department will add 1,300 deputies to beef up patrols.

"There are hundreds of businesses which, through no fault of their own, do not fall under the Governor’s definition of critical infrastructure," the sheriff said. "As a result, I have instructed my deputies to enforce closures of businesses which have disregarded the Governor’s order (gun stores, strip clubs, and other non-designated businesses)."

This directive comes after reports that gun stores in Los Angeles have seen an increase in sales due to coronavirus concerns.

900 miles is 2 tanks of gas, 15 hours driving time, one hotel, 2 or 3 piss stops, 1 or 2 poop stops, and four meals.
you start out with one tank at home, get the second tank about 8 hours later which can be combined with the hotel stop, shit stop, meal stop. And then you can combine your remaining 3 meal stops with piss stops.
So that is five stops and five counties you need to research to determine whether you can stop or be fined, arrested or impounded.
I recommend a catheter and an ice chest to save you a lot of hassel.

Two drivers eliminates the hotel stop. A bottle and a funnel takes care of the piss stops. A cooler with some sandwiches from home, cold drinks and a bag or two of snacks takes care of the restaurants. Far as the gas, gloves, mask and social distancing.

added …. forgot the poop breaks. Two rolls of tp a dark road and a bush takes care of that.

Oklahoma Gov. Stitt orders all non-essential businesses to close in counties affected by COVID-19

by: KFOR-TV and K. Querry
Posted: Mar 24, 2020 / 02:51 PM CDT / Updated: Mar 24, 2020 / 03:45 PM CDT

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – As the cases of novel coronavirus continue to grow in Oklahoma, Governor Kevin Stitt says he is taking additional measures to protect Oklahomans.
On Tuesday morning, officials with the Oklahoma State Department of Health announced that 106 Oklahomans have tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

So far, officials say three Oklahoma patients have died and 25 others have been hospitalized because of the virus.
Officials say the latest death was a Cleveland County woman in her 60s.
According to health department data, the patients range in age from less than 1-year-old to 91-years-old. Two of the patients are children.

Hours after the data was released to the public, Gov. Kevin Stitt called a news conference to announce new social distance measures that are being implemented. “We need all Oklahomans to take this really, really seriously,” Stitt said.

As part of the new restrictions, Stitt said that all non-essential businesses located in the counties affected by COVID-19 are being ordered to close at 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25 until April 14.

Non-essential businesses are considered places with a ‘social gathering’ aspect, like bars, gyms, and massage parlors.
The current counties affected by the regulations are as follows:
  • Canadian – 4
  • Cleveland – 22
  • Custer – 1
  • Garvin – 2
  • Grady- 1
  • Jackson -1
  • Kay – 5
  • Logan-1
  • Mayes- 1
  • McClain -1
  • Muskogee -1
  • Noble -2
  • Oklahoma – 41
  • Pawnee – 4
  • Payne -3
  • Pontotoc – 1
  • Tulsa – 12
  • Wagoner -1
  • Washington – 2.
Stitt says that restaurants are being asked to remain open by offering takeout and delivery options, but not dine-in areas.

“By acting early, we are going to flatten that curve,” Stitt said.

Gov. Stitt says as COVID-19 cases spread to other counties around the state, those counties will then be included in the order.

The U.S. government defines essential personnel as:
  • Healthcare/ Public health
  • Law enforcement, Public Safety, First Responders
  • Food and Agriculture
  • Energy
  • Water and Wastewater
  • Transportation and Logistics
  • Public Works
  • Communications and Information Technology
  • Community-based Government Operations and Essential Functions
  • Critical Manufacturing
  • Hazardous Materials
  • Financial Services
  • Chemical
  • Defense Industrial Base.
To read more in-depth about the positions, visit the CISA site.
State leaders tell KFOR that they are working to expand the list, but that list has not been released yet.
Also, gatherings of 10 people or more will be restricted across the state.
At the same time, Stitt issued a ‘safer-at-home’ order, asking all vulnerable populations across the state to stay at home and only go out in public for the essentials until April 30.

Stitt says he is also issuing a 14-day suspension of all elective surgeries, minor medical procedures, and non-emergency dental procedures in order to protect the state’s supply of personal protective equipment for medical workers. Visitation is also being suspended at all long-term care facilities until further notice.

“We are gonna get through this. We’ve been in tough times before and together we are going to come out of this stronger,” Stitt said. State officials urge Oklahomans to stay away from ill patients and to frequently wash their hands. Also, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

At this point, Americans are urged to practice ‘social distancing’ by staying in their homes as much as possible and not going out into a crowd.

The virus is mainly spread from person-to-person, and symptoms usually appear two to 14 days after exposure. Officials stress that the most common symptoms are fever, cough, and shortness of breath.
If you do become sick, you are asked to stay away from others. If you have been in an area where the coronavirus is known to be spreading or been around a COVID-19 patient and develop symptoms, you are asked to call your doctor ahead of time and warn them that you might have been exposed to the virus. That way, experts say, they have the ability to take extra precautions to protect staff and other patients.

The novel coronavirus was first detected in China late last year and has since spread to locations across the globe, including the United States.

While the full extent of COVID-19 is not known yet, reported illnesses have ranged from extremely mild to severe, some resulting in death. Officials say that 80 to 85 percent of cases of COVID-19 have been mild, similar to a cold or the flu.
Older people and those with underlying health conditions like heart disease, lung disease, and diabetes are at a greater risk for a serious case.

Stupid question time; we keep hearing of various locales adopting "shelter in place" . How does this apply to getting in a car and driving 900 miles and only getting out to get gas or sleep?
I was contemplating that with my DS - he was in Idaho and I thought I'd have to drive out and get him. I was planning on going Highway 20 the whole way - mostly 4-lane - but not considered Interstate. I thought smaller roads would have less issues. We ended up flying him home - but even though Illinois was on the new stay-at-home lockdown - we traveled to O'Hare from our house - 3 hours round trip - and had no problem. We've also gone up to Wisconsin with no problem.

ETA: I've driven 900 miles in one day - got up at 3 a.m. and drove for 14 hours. It was a LONG day - but it's doable.

Okay - let's only use Hubei province. Between 2010 and 2015, Hubei province averaged 15,000 deaths per year due to influenza. Same argument I made before - why such drastic measures for only 3,000?

"Age-specific influenza-associated excess respiratory mortality rates per 100 000 person-seasons for all influenza in mainland China between the 2010–11 through 2014–15 seasons "
In my OPINION, I believe it was
50k when we normally average 20k. Something tells me a lot of the prior "they died of the flue" probably already had the WuFlu.
I'm still going with this shit has been here 2 months longer than known or let be known.
I think that it's been here longer too. The crap I had in December sounds like it. Just a weird fever, horrible the first few days, than off and on for a few weeks, feel like death, no appetite, then the couch that goes on and on. Horrible non productive cough. I lost 20 pounds

For those who need another doom fix, go to the USA flu map and check your state. Weekly US Map: Influenza Summary Update

Look for the ILI (Influenza like Illnesses) not just influenza numbers. It looks like each state has different graphs and ways of reporting, so look around the site until you find the ILI.
This is for Indiana...
I was looking at the last 2 weeks: week 10, ending Mar 7 and week 11, ending Mar 14. On week 10, they noted:
*Influenza testing at the ISDH Laboratory has been suspended until further notice due to the COVID-19 response. The weekly Influenza Report may not have virologic surveillance data during this time.
Last week, they added:
*Note: The COVID-19 outbreak unfolding in the United States may affect healthcare seeking behavior which in turn would impact Indiana’s sentinel and syndromic ILI data.
The graph shows percent of patients with ILI chief complaints in emergency departments and urgent cares.

On TB every waking moment
Well, they are doing that in Spain and Italy - both last year student nurses and doctors were giving "battlefield promotions" with the caveat that they are still being given extra help by those with more experience.

But then the European systems (and the UK/Ireland) tend to put people "on the job" for the last two years or so of training, so it isn't like a "jr" doctor doesn't know how to draw blood, prescribe medications or treat a cyclonic storm - but they haven't yet done specialties in heart surgery, etc - but they can set broken bones and do basic care - that frees the heart surgeon to work only on heart patients.

Now in Ireland, The POLICE (aka Guards) just "battlefield" promoted everyone in the Garda college including those with only 4-week training! They are all FULL garda now but the newbies will complete their training "on-the-job" mostly meaning stations and doing paperwork to free the experienced officers to deal with hands-on crime, traffic accidents etc.

It should be perfectly possible to allow student nurses, especially those who have almost graduated to do finish their "practice" working on live patients during a medical emergency, they will just need to be assigned to jobs that are pretty basic for them to do (but still require a nurse) while freeing the experienced nurses to do things that are more complex and specialized.

Other places are doing so, it just depends on how desperate the situation gets...desperate times often call for desperate measures.
You could place supervising nursing staff who are at higher risk or pulled out of retirement with the students in non-infectious and less challenging settings.

My daughter is in group 7 of people they would send home to die. I can't with this right now. All I can do is isolate and pray that if she gets it, and it gets bad, that it is before or after the big wave so she can be saved... :(

My thoughts and prayers are with you and yours. May God's Peace, that surpasses all understanding, His Mercy, always abound to you, and may His Grace, provide all sufficiency in all that you need, want, or desire, be yours, now and forever. Amen...

Where is this statistic coming from?

Originally in this thread, I thought the stat was about 20% will need hospitalization, and then a subset of that 20% will need a vent.
Italy. 25% of hospitalized cases are being vented. NY experts that they will have 30000 that will need to be vented before this is over. Cali is saying that in 8 weeks they will have millions sick. NY is expecting 400000 -- a morbid under-estimate.

400,000 x .3 (hospital rate in Italy) = 120,000
120,000 x .25 (vent rate Italy) = 30,000

These numbers are extremely unrealistic and are gross under-estimates. 400,000 extrapolates out to 4 cycles of 3 days. That's 12 weeks. It will happen much faster than that. They are already occupying hotel and are now looking at sports stadiums. They are building army hospitals to house people. This is a really serious problem.

I don't even understand Trump (listening to the live Coronavirus Task Force presser). He's saying things like, "...as we near the end of this..." and "we're beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel."

Story from my work today, we are doing curbside with clients dropping off pets and picking up meds. (Yes, they’re still coming in by the way). We are wearing masks and gloves.

Took pen and payment out to a man who signed his charge then told me to “watch handling that pen”... I stopped asked if he felt sick, no he isn’t sick but is an ER Dr from our St Vincent hospital. He wanted to vent, I think, and looked shell shocked.

He said they are slammed with patients and every ICU bed is full, with sick people everywhere.
Said it “blew up last Thursday and hasn’t stopped” .

This is central Indiana. We chatted a bit more but thats the jist.

I threw the pen and clipboard into the trash.
You need to make people use their own pens!

There is a record of 26 people using the drug. It worked out that the group was worse off using the drug than not. 26 is not even enough to start with. You need 100000 people in a double blind and controlled study. And, when you are done with that you do it again.

This will take at least 6 months if not more. Although the drug is legal, it has not be approved for this virus. This is a deadly drug and death by overdose is a real possibility. What dosage is effective for stopping the virus? What is the least amount that can be used? What about using it in tandem with another drug? How many does a day? How many days? Relapse? All of these questions (and more) need to be answered.
