Has No Life - Lives on TB
Sigh… I went grocery shopping late last night (lower foot traffic equals lower microbial load, right?) and had a couple of teachable moments regarding the potential for an epidemic:

1) I decided to wear a pair of regular off-white nitrile gloves while out and about, so I could perform hygiene without destroying my skin. Off to Costco I went. I grabbed the usual bi-weekly load of stuff, managed to find a short check-out line, and thought I was out of there without incident. Until… The checker handed my card back to me and I noticed the color of my palms and fingers: they had a more-than-just faint yellow tinge to them. The kind of yellow, with a hint of brown, that one would associate with sinus infections and bile – a “Human” yellow. My left hand wasn’t remotely as stained, as I had been holding my phone (grocery list) with it from pretty much the moment I entered. The right hand was steering and manipulating items.

It’s Costco: all the items I grabbed were enclosed in plastic, so it wasn’t a product “bleeding” onto the glove. I’m guessing it was the cart handle, and the various freezer handles. YUCK. When I got out to the car, I grabbed a couple of Lysol wipes and “washed” my hands with them, methodically. The gunk came off on the wipes. YUCK. I “washed” again… That disinfectant smell is glorious.

TEACHABLE MOMENT: The public is NASTY. I don’t know how many years of collected biofilm resides on those carts, and handles, but YUCK, that was disgusting. Regardless of the average level of education (this is Tech country), your fellow citizens are NASTY, and they will merrily embark upon a jihad of mindless contamination and infection.

2) I also saw a fat blue-haired Millennial woman with her Soy Boy in tow, hacking-up her lungs with directionless abandon - up one aisle and down another. A deep, muddy, body-wrenching cough... Thanks lady. The rest of us are so glad you decided to share your nasty-ass lung plague with the rest of society. You get a gold star. As I left, I could hear her coughing from across the store.

TEACHABLE MOMENT: Americans will NOT wear masks until it is too late, if at all. And, they will continue to venture out into public for as long as they are able to shuffle along. Even if they are minutes away from dropping dead, there are simply too many Twinkies left to eat, and they need their comfort food.

NOT an encouraging night.

By pulling the cart from the end instead of pushing from the front will help limit the contamination you encounter from the dozen other people who used the cart that day.

Does This Satellite Image Show The Scale Of China's Coronavirus Cremations? Sulphur Dioxide Emissions Which Are Produced When Bodies Are Burned Reach Alarming Levels In Wuhan

High sulphur dioxide levels at the centre of the coronavirus outbreak could be a sign of mass cremations, it has been claimed.

Satellite maps in recent days have shown alarming levels of SO2 around Wuhan, the Chinese city where the outbreak began.

In addition, there were high sulphur dioxide levels in the city of Chongqing which is also under quarantine.

Scientists say that sulphur dioxide is produced when bodies are cremated, and also when medical waste is incinerated.

But social media users who investigated the maps have suggested that dead bodies could be being burned on the outskirts of the city.

24546650-7986553-image-a-3_1581330897946.jpg

This satellite map which was captured at the weekend shows very high levels of sulphur dioxide (SO2) in the city of Wuhan at the centre of the coronavirus outbreak

China has decreed that the bodies of coronavirus victims should be cremated in low-key funerals to prevent large public gatherings.

The country's National Health Commission said earlier this month that bodies should be 'cremated close by and immediately'.

On top of that, there have been repeated claims - albeit unverified - that officials are concealing a higher-than-reported death toll with mass cremations.

The high sulphur dioxide levels in Wuhan would be consistent with a high number of cremations in the city.

One map from Czech-based weather service Windy.com showed sulphur dioxide levels in Wuhan at a staggering 1,350 micrograms per cubic metre (µg/m3) over the weekend.

For comparison, the World Health Organisation (WHO) says that a dosage of 500 µg/m3 should not be exceeded for more than 10 minutes.

The UK government considers a 15-minute concentration of 533 µg/m3 to be 'high'.

According to the map, the SO2 levels were lower today but Wuhan and Chongqing still stood out compared to much of China.

Parts of Wuhan still showed concentrations above 500 µg/m3 on Monday, the map suggested.

Scientists say that cremating bodies releases SO2 along with other pollutants including nitrogen oxides.

Health workers in protective suits stand by the body of a man wearing a face mask who died in Wuhan. China has decreed that virus victims be quickly cremated

The US Environmental Protection Agency says that burning medical waste can also cause sulphur dioxide emissions.

However, it is not certain that the high SO2 levels are related to the coronavirus crisis. The colourless gas is also produced by the burning of fossil fuels and other chemical processes.

The areas around Beijing and Shanghai, which are not in lockdown, also displayed high levels of SO2 today, although they were not as high over the weekend.

Wuhan remains in lockdown with 11million people in quarantine, meaning reports from the city are hard to verify.

The World Health Organisation says that high or prolonged exposure to sulphur dioxide can cause 'serious risks to health'.

The gas can play a role in health problems such as asthma, lung inflammation and reduced lung function, experts say.

'SO2 can affect the respiratory system and the functions of the lungs, and causes irritation of the eyes,' the WHO says.

'Inflammation of the respiratory tract causes coughing, mucus secretion, aggravation of asthma and chronic bronchitis and makes people more prone to infections of the respiratory tract.

'Hospital admissions for cardiac disease and mortality increase on days with higher SO2 levels.

'When SO2 combines with water, it forms sulphuric acid; this is the main component of acid rain which is a cause of deforestation.'

24546780-7986553-The_virus_hit_cities_of_Wuhan_and_Chongqing_both_showed-a-7_1581331117466.jpg

The virus-hit cities of Wuhan and Chongqing both showed high levels of sulphur dioxide, which is produced in the incineration of bodies and medical waste

The death toll from the virus rose by 97 yesterday, the deadliest day since the outbreak began.

Another 3,062 cases were reported in China yesterday - an increase of 15 per cent compared to Saturday which put an end to a series of daily declines.

The latest surge in figures has dampened hopes that China's public health response might be working.

The rise in China's death toll comes as millions of people return to work today after an extended Lunar New Year holiday.

Roads in Beijing and Shanghai had significantly more traffic than in recent days and the city of Guangzhou was resuming normal public transport today.

However, the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai said 60 per cent of its member companies were planning mandatory work-from-home policies.

Tens of millions of people in Hubei province were not returning to work, as the province at the centre of the outbreak remained under lockdown.

China has built two hospitals for virus patients in Wuhan and sent thousands of extra doctors, nurses and other health care workers to the city of 1 million people.

Most access to Wuhan was suspended on January 23 and restrictions have expanded since then to cities with a total of 60million people.

China said today that 27 foreigners had been infected with the virus in the country, including two of the country's 908 deaths.

Two people have died outside mainland China, one in Hong Kong and the other in the Philippines, taking the global toll to 910.

More than 360 cases of the virus have been confirmed outside China, bringing the total to at least 40,531.

The fatality toll has passed the 774 people believed to have died in the 2002-03 SARS outbreak, another viral outbreak that originated in China.

The total of more than 40,000 confirmed cases of the new virus vastly exceeds the 8,098 sickened by SARS.

I mentioned way back when: when the numbers (input) are crap, the output calculated/projected from those numbers are going to be crap as well. About the best it can qualify for is a wild-assed guess.

The only thing the official numbers are good for is to give a feel for the direction/velocity of the outbreak.

Trying to figure how many are infected or dead from that input is apt to have your projection off by one or two orders of magnitude.

A far better indication is to watch what they are doing... though they've been clamping down on any leaks they can. And what they've been doing is ... treating this as a major outbreak of a highly pathogenic virus which is going to require "War" footing to eradicate. Placing a Major General in charge of the Wuhan Bio Lab. Beating old ladies who can't afford masks for not wearing a mask... You get the picture.

Many of us have consistently said China has to be lying about the numbers. As Tristan argues here their actions speak louder than words. Couple that with the lack of evidence they are supplying those left in quarantine. Either they have abandoned those quarantined or the number of dead is considerably more than even we have estimated.

Beijing CDC Party Committee Issues Wartime Status Order
2020-02-13 18:38:07
Wartime Status Order
Party Committee of Beijing Centers for Disease Control
In order to further discipline, compact responsibility, and ensure that all prevention and control work is carried out in an efficient and standardized manner, the Party Committee of the Beijing Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a wartime state order, requiring its party members and employees to fully recognize the "critical period", "critical moment", and "keys" The urgency and importance of the moment, consciously established a "very conscious" and entered a "wartime state."
The first is to insist on using "state of war" to lead the thinking.
The center not only fulfills the city's epidemic prevention and control duties, provides professional technical support duties for government decision-making, but also implements the "unit responsibility" of the "quartet responsibility" to protect the safety and health of all employees, both of which are equally important and cannot be sidelined. Under the unified leadership of the Party Committee, it unconditionally obeys the decision-making and deployment of the Party Committee in the wartime state and serves the current prevention and control work. It resonates at the same frequency, obeys unified orders, unified commands, and acts.
The second is to insist on strengthening implementation with "wartime standards."
All party members and cadres must take overall consideration into account and resolutely put an end to work mistakes caused by this mistake. All employees must unconditionally obey work scheduling and consciously obey management. Strengthen the work style and achieve "the end of the day and the end of the day"; adhere to the problem-oriented, responsibility-oriented, sensitive matters in the prevention and control, unexplained events and the work of leaders at all levels, to understand the situation at the grassroots level and guide commence to work.
1581589990765002896.jpg

The third is to strictly control contact with "wartime thinking."
Minimize "cross-contact". During the epidemic, all staff members are strictly prohibited from leaving Beijing, strictly commuting to work, eating out, and consciously doing good health management after work. The Security Section should strengthen the access control of the three courtyards, and strictly control the entrance and exit of the gates and all foreign personnel. All personnel enter the hospital area for temperature monitoring and must enter the hospital with work cards to reduce unnecessary travel during work. Non-work must not be connected to the department, try to use the phone or WeChat, SMS and other means of communication. Try to have as few meetings and short meetings as possible to control the number of participants.
The fourth is to insist on strict management with "wartime thinking."
Highlight political security, ideological security, network information security, security of confidential work, laboratory biological security, food security, etc. The epidemic data collection, statistics and reporting will be done well, and information security and confidentiality security incidents will be resolutely prevented. Front-line personnel engaged in flow regulation, pathogen inspection, and close management should strictly implement prevention and control guidelines and operating specifications, do a good job of personal protection requirements, and ensure personal safety. Strengthen laboratory management and resolutely put an end to the theft, leakage, and loss of pathogenic bacteria (poisons) and various samples.
Fifth, we must adhere to the "wartime need" service guarantee.
The equipment and material security department shall fully protect the front line, make plans in advance in accordance with the needs of the prevention and control of the flow of returning adults in Beijing, and evaluate and reserve and manage protective materials daily. Implement the "precision arrangement of materials" requirements, timely grasp the material inventory and daily consumption, and carry out scientific and efficient deployment, not only to implement a convenient procurement process to meet the needs of prevention and control, but also to seriously fulfill the "three major and one big" and internal control requirements. All employees should implement self-protection requirements, and non-epidemic personnel should not wear medical N95 masks, including N95 masks purchased by themselves.
Sixth, we must adhere to "war discipline" and take it seriously.
The current situation of epidemic prevention and control is extremely severe, and the responsibility for prevention and control is more important than Mount Tai. The big battle is coming. All party branches must mobilize their thoughts and gather the masses to give full play to the role of battle fortress; cadres at all levels must lead by example, dare to take the lead and give full play to the leading role; each party member must advance, take on the burden and give full play to the vanguard Exemplary role. All party branches, departments, and cadres at all levels must earnestly perform their main responsibilities, and disciplinary commissions must perform their supervisory responsibilities to ensure the smooth flow of government orders and prohibitions.
All middle-level cadres and branch secretaries who violated the disciplinary requirements in the entire epidemic prevention and control work and caused significant adverse effects and serious consequences to the center and the city's prevention and control work were all suspended or dismissed in advance; timely public notification of typical problems investigated and dealt with.

Only one death outside China.

Something isn't fitting the narrative
There may be others in various countries which are not attributed to the virus because of an apparent pneumonia or something. If they are not looking for it diligently it will not be found. And why check the dead, unless you really want information?

It's not petty...

To be able to break up words and entire sentences like this, with the correct punctuation and emphasis, cannot be attributed to a stroke. I might believe it more if he didn't place the apostrophes EXACTLY where they needed to be to make the phonetic understandable.

See the following:

- Thanks, marsh... Takin' yer advice. OA, out...

- Maybe that was it!!! Two strokes an' a seizure have scrambled ma brains a bit... That's wi' tongue in cheek, o' course... Thanks fer the remind, Troke! Greatly appreciated... Whys ah heard it, samples went ta th' military labs... 'Course, I'd be lots happier, if'n I knew one way or t'other... Not knowin' is drivin' me crackers... Again, thanks, Troke... Ta quote Dan Quayle, "A mind is a terrible thing ta waste..." Er, somethin' like that...

- Hell, th' way things look, there'll be more jobs than people!

- IF they have valid test kits, an' they don't continue ta jigger the numbers...

- JIT HAS failed. Th' tail ain't jest reached where the head is... Th' body's still a wigglin,' an' "experts" think it's still alive...

I don't know if he is trying to be the new Dobbin or a modern day Samuel Clemons but it is annoying and reduces all credibility he may have had. And, I used to hold Old Archer on a pedestal. It takes a concerted effort to post like that...

I came across this discussion while trying to catch up on this thread, and I have to agree that it would take intentional effort to craft posts like those! Sorry OA, I've always liked you, but this recent posting style strikes me as an attempt to come across as a caricature of the stereotypical "country bumpkin".

Since I seem to recall that you were an educator at one time, this comes across as denigrating and condescending as Hillary or Joe's attempt to pander to blacks by using fake Southern accents while reciting the "I've come too far" spiel...

If the Chinese government is able to feed countless millions of quarantined people, or a billion if it gets a lot worse, it will only be because they have a communist government with a command economy, all aspects of which can be controlled, by force if necessary. If hundreds of millions were quarantined in this country, it wouldn't work. People would have to pay for food deliveries (if workers are available to deliver) and if they run out of money for food they will starve. The U.S. government does not have the logistical or financial resources; there would be mass starvation. High rise apartments in big cities will become charnel houses and ultimately, sealed tombs to contain pathogens. When essential medicines (e.g. heart meds and insulin) run out, a lot of people will die.
They would try to use the National Guard and the military to do the deliveries..... still won't work, but they will try...

hunkering down for 15, 30, 90, 120 days is somewhat folly. Preventing the spread (stay home if ill) and taking appropriate measures to limit one's possible contamination (PPE & sanitation) is the best way survive this ordeal.

Agree. But you want the ABILITY to stay home for a month or three in aggregate, so that any time it seems appropriate you can do an intermittent hunker down for the appropriate time segment. You also need to cut loose from the supply chain in the effect of a food panic, like a pre-hurricane rush.

Summary:
  • Japan reports first virus death
  • President Xi says China will minimize impact from virus
  • Chinese leadership scapegoats local officials
  • Death toll and case count soared last night: There are more than 60k cases worldwide, and more than 1300 deaths
  • EIA joins OPEC in warning about upcoming drop in oil use, the first in a decade.
  • HHS Secretary says CDC will announce another confirmed COVID-19 case in US on Thursday
  • 21 people in Spain released from quarantine
  • US admin reportedly questioning China's reporting
  • White House reportedly "doubts" China's coronavirus numbers
  • CDC warns more infections possible after first US case confirmed in Texas (15th overall)
  • 2 Russian women attempt escape from quarantine
  • EU could close border if outbreak worsens
  • Kudlow says US "disappointed" in China virus response
* * *
Update(1250ET): Not long after reports claimed the White House is widely skeptical of Chinese numbers, Trump's top economic advisor Larry Kudlow appeared on television to say the US is "disappointed" in how China has handled the virus response, and that the Trump administration wishes there was more clarity.

Specifically, the US was most hurt by China's refusal to accept an American team of experts from the CDC, who offered to help.
The US economy would be at 3% growth if not for the virus, he added.
* * *
Update (1230ET): As Beijing insists that it's safe for foreign nations to soon lift their travel restrictions on China, CNN reports that the European Union is considering closing its borders if the outbreak really escalates.

They cite a Croatian health official, who said the plan is in the works, though he strongly suspects that it won't be necessary.
The WHO has said that level of restriction isn't necessary, but that' hasn't stopped Russia from closing part of its border and other countries restricting travel by Chinese.
* * *
Update (1215ET): For the second day in a row, the CDC has warned that more confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the US are inevitable, especially as the testing of ~800 evacuees from Wuhan continues.
After confirming the US's 15th case at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, officials warned that "there may be additional cases" identified during this period.

The 15th patient was a "solo traveler" from China who has been quarantined "since arriving at Lackland Air Force Base from Wuhan.
They remain in isolation at a local hospital.
Officials assured the public that there's no risk to the local community, according to CNN.
"We are right in the middle of that incubation period so it is not surprising" that the individual developed symptoms, McQuiston said.
"For the most part the people in quarantine are not doing much associating with each other," McQuiston said.

Perhaps this is why:

Starts at line 202.

(1) The conclusion of this study is a true reflection of the characteristics of 2019-nCoV itself; (2) In the early stage of 2019-nCoV infection, due to the strong variability and good concealment of the virus, it cannot be quickly recognized by the body; (3) 2019-nCoV releases certain special factors after entering the body and interferes with the body's initiation of a specific immune response.

https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.02.10.20021832v1.full.pdf

I guess we will see if the West gets around to reaching the same conclusion (publicly). Gotta wonder if they haven't already; hence the downplay routine.
This is from MIT Medical -

Is a person with 2019-nCoV contagious before symptoms appear?
New evidence indicates that people who are infected with 2019-nCoV may become contagious before symptoms are noticeable. That is also true for the seasonal flu, but was not the case for SARS, a coronavirus that is closely related to 2019-nCoV. To date, neither the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) nor WHO (World Health Organization) have changed their recommendations regarding the treatment of asymptomatic individuals who may have been exposed to 2019 n-CoV while traveling.
January 31, 2020

The doctor from CDC was stating that people were not contagious unless they had a fever.

Well, we had the Super Bowl and there were some predicting disaster. I think the Mardi Gras has a better chance but not by much.

I am not a believer that there are thousands of carriers wandering around the country infecting guh-zillions of citizens.

When a patient comes in with 'flu' like symptoms, they are tested for the flu (which is a quick process). If it comes back positive then they are treated appropriately. It doesn't really matter whether they have the coronavirus or not as the treatment modality (supportive) is basically the same. There is no magic pill for either the flu or the coronavirus. If there were, we wouldn't have the 12,000 deaths from the flu on a yearly basis.

It's when the flu test is negative and the patient has flu like symptoms that further investigation is necessary. Think how much healthier our society would be if we approached the flu like we are approaching the coronavirus... mandatory isolation?
There is the possibility of them having flu and corona virus. If not tested for it is not a definite negative for corona virus. If they have corona virus, die and are handled as a flu death the risk of spreading corona virus is greatly increased.

It may not be realistic, or too expensive, to do all that testing but that does not change the risk of the infectious dead being handled as a normal death.

I normally like to solve problems. I do no have an answer.

Personally I’m not as concerned about the virus spread in the U.S. as I am about supply chain issues. We certainly have the potential for rapid ramp up of disease numbers but as a whole I attribute a lot of Chinese infections being caught thru fecal contamination. They have squat toilets and wipe their ass with their hands a lot of the time and they are not in the habit of using soap and hot water.

We are not yet seeing exponential case loads in Western nations or in Japan whose hygiene practices are similar to ours. I do expect localized intense outbreaks in San Fran and other big cities that have a lot of homeless crapping in the streets and high drug use. Although the virus is airborne as well as surface contact these vectors don’t seem to be as virulent as of yet. The longer we go without seeing our numbers spike way up the more I think good hygiene plays the largest role in transmission.

However....we are screwed due to supply chain issues and just in time inventory. While we might dodge a huge virus outbreak this may and probably will be the tipping point to bring on economic and fiscal collapse. If it was just us we would be o.k. But way too much of what we need for normalcy is sourced from China and India as well if it takes off there.

Source what you need as quickly as possible before the herd awakes. First it was masks and other PPE and now the concern is awaking for medications and soon it will be everyday items that people need and expect to be on the shelves. Don’t let down your guard and efforts if you don’t see the case count quickly rise here. This is an iceberg and the part above the surface is the virus. It’s what is below the surface that will rip the guts out of the ship of State.

Question: Is it possible to have Type A/B "regular" flu and also have COVID-19? In that case, the test for the regular flu is simple. It tests positive and the person is never tested for COVID-19. Dangerous. I just don't know if the two can be present at the same time.
I don’t know why not. I doubt if one blocks the other.

Anyway, I am calling my Valentine's Day prediction since the Chinese version of the virus reality had just collapsed on itself. The White House just redefined the entire virus context because they openly called the Chinese liars and frauds and there is no going back from that. I said you multiply by 10 or 100 and that is now out there and that is the "defining event" I was aiming at. The Global Pandemic is now game on.

China deploys 2,600 military medics to help fight coronavirus as Wuhan & Hubei party chiefs sacked

Hundreds of military medics will descend on coronavirus-stricken Wuhan to help tackle the epidemic as the number of confirmed cases worldwide surpasses 60,000, with the death toll leaping over 1,300.
The first installment of 1,400 military medical personnel touched down in the city in central China worst affected by the ongoing viral epidemic on Thursday, the Chinese Defense Ministry reported.
The medics represent several branches of the Chinese armed forces, including the Navy, Air Force, armed police, logistic and strategic support forces, and even the Rocket Force.
The current reinforcements are not the first the Chinese military has sent to the region. Extra medical staffers have been relocated to the city to man two makeshift hospitals that were built in mere days earlier this month.

Meanwhile, Chinese state media reported that Jiang Chaoliang, the head of the Communist Party in Hubei province, and Ma Guoqiang, the party chief in the provincial capital, Wuhan, were both removed from their posts. Shanghai Mayor Ying Yong will replace the provincial head, while Wang Zhonglin, the party chief in Jinan, will take on the mantle in Wuhan.

It was not immediately clear what prompted the ousters. Chinese state media tabloid Global Times reported that an “inspection” was carried out by the central government in Hubei and “a number of local officials have been questioned and punished for failing to fulfill their duties in the prevention and control work.”

Beijing CDC Party Committee Issues Wartime Status Order

This did not give me a warm, fuzzy feeling.
