Most of the case reports I have read have them starting at 2L O2. I would probably start with the oxygen on these folks at an O2sat of 90-92%. Remember that more is not necessarily always better.

I've got an O2 finger sensor. I had figured 92-94%, if it actually comes to me needing to intervene. I'll take your 90-92% advice, and thanks.

Quarantined Cruise Ship - Japan ex-Hong Kong Includes 428 Americans

More than 5,300 people are being quarantined on two cruise ships off Hong Kong and Japan amid concerns passengers and crew were inadvertently exposed to the Wuhan coronavirus by infected passengers.

People aboard both ships are being given health screenings, and those with suspicious symptoms are being tested for the virus that has quickly spread throughout mainland China and beyond.

The Diamond Princess is anchored off the coast of Yokohama, near Tokyo, with 1,045 crew and 2,666 passengers -- including 428 Americans -- on board.

The second ship, the World Dream, is docked at Hong Kong's Kai Tak Cruise Terminal with 1,800 people on board, the city's Department of Health said Wednesday.

New coronavirus infection confirmed on a cruise ship calling at Yokohama Port
The cruise ship “Diamond Princess” arriving at Yokohama Port on February 3 is undergoing quarantine at sea, but 10 out of 31 people have been tested for the new coronavirus so far. Was transported to a medical institution in Kanagawa Prefecture because a positive new coronavirus test was confirmed.

Quarantine of the cruise ship continues to be implemented. Currently, a new type of coronavirus test is being conducted, mainly for the affected, and the results will be announced later.

Quarantined: 4 Utahns trapped on cruise ship after passengers infected with coronavirus
by Alyssa Roberts and Heidi Hatch Wednesday, February 5th 2020

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — At least four Utahns are stuck on board a cruise ship near Tokyo, Japan that is now quarantined due to an outbreak of coronavirus on board.

Jerri Larson Jorgensen and her husband have been touring southeast Asia for several weeks. They visited Hong Kong, China, Japan, and Vietnam so far, she said.

Another woman, Karey Maniscalco, sent a Facebook message to 2News saying she and her husband were also on board the quarantined ship.

Jorgensen said they were eating dinner when someone came over the ship's intercom and announced that a fellow passenger from Hong Kong was showing symptoms of coronavirus.

Ship passengers were informed Tuesday morning that at least 10 people on board were infected with the virus, Jorgensen told 2News. The 10 who tested positive were taken to hospitals, the Associated Press reports.

Japanese authorities came to their cabins and checked them for signs or symptoms of the virus. Jorgensen said.
Japanese authorities told the Associated Press there were at least 3,700 passengers on board Jorgensen's ship. Jorgensen told 2News she thought there were between 100 and 200 Americans on board, along with "many more Australians," and Asian citizens from several countries.

"When we got into Japan, they were not letting us off the ship," she said.

I'm trying to find a way to refute this evaluation and I can't come up with anything that counters this summary.
That is the problem. In my mind it is not the number of infected. Though that really does matter in the long run, but if you never get better or half the people die, then it is far worse even with low infection rates. It will tear apart any country that an outbreak occurs in.

Think about it. If we have an outbreak here in the USA and say 1% of the population gets sick and you know you have a 1/3 or 1/2 chance of dying from it or worse financial bankruptcy due to long term hospital stays, you will do everything possible not to get infected.

This means the very way we interact with others will change and not for the better.

People will get violent and go a bit off the main track as they try and stay healthy

We either take the numbers at face value without speculation in calculations or we discard the numbers entirely. Picking and choosing what to count based upon a preconceived figure for a death rate and recovery rate just doesn't work.

That's why I posted my above musings. These numbers are and will continue to be bogus because the PRC will not admit to actual or even best guestimate numbers. That is proven by GammaRat's deduction.
Yes, but even with what they admit, it is not good.....

If you have underlying lung disease (asthma, COPD, etc) it would not be bad to use the upper range. Easier to stay on top of it than to play catch up.

All the incoming flights are from Europe. They are all china registered .

The ones leaving are going to the mid east area. None are registered to china.
This is not a regular flight path thru this area.

Speaking of, this is a good story. I was at the doctor's office yesterday. The one where they were handing out face masks and asking every patient who registers at the front desk a series of questions about travel and symptoms that might relate to the coronavirus.

There were a lot of patients coughing and obviously sick in the waiting room. I would (for now) presume it was the flu. I am healthy and just went in there for a med check up. Before the doctor came in the exam room, the nurse checked my blood pressure and then was about to slip the pulse oximeter on my index finger to check my oxygen levels. I stopped her and asked, “Do you alcohol wipe those things down after each use?” She stared at me blankly for a sec and said, “No.” I shook my head. “So you have everyone wearing face masks here, but yet a hundred other people this week have stuck their finger in there? No thanks. I’ll pass on that one.”

She got it, and made it a point to wipe it down for me. But it’s this kind of lackadaisical approach to germ warfare that’s going to be our downfall.

Essentially, she's a super spreader.

Your story highlights just how difficult it is to stay uncontaminated. Just one oversight, and the bug jumps the fence into your (assumed) green zone.

How To Tell If It’s A Cold, Flu, Or The New Coronavirus

The China coronavirus is rapidly spreading with the number of people infected rising daily, and with it the death toll.
At this moment, NBC News reports that the number of confirmed cases in China has reached almost 10,000, with another 102,000 people reported to be under observation.

The World Health Organization (the WHO) has declared the epidemic a “global emergency” with 23 countries so far confirming cases of Coronavirus.

Of course, those numbers could change rapidly over a few days or even hours.

And yes…
The United States is on that list with 11 cases so far confirmed including a case of person-to-person transmission that raises the threat level of the virus.

So, is it any surprise that more and more people are beginning to wonder… Is that tickle in my throat, the cough that just started, or the fever that hit Coronavirus, or do I just have the common cold or flu?
That’s why we’re breaking down information from the experts on how to tell the difference and when you should be worried about the new virus out of China.

The Symptoms
The biggest problem with determining whether you have a cold, flu, or Coronavirus is that they are all upper respiratory infections. This means that their symptoms are extremely similar.

Every respiratory virus is the same — you get a runny nose, a stuffy nose, a cough, sometimes a sore throat, all because the lining of your nose and throat are damaged. The symptoms are caused by that virus or bacteria damaging the cells of your respiratory tract. It doesn’t matter what virus is causing it.

According to the medical team at Yale, you can generally differentiate between a cold and the flu in this way…
“Flu symptoms are more intense than those associated with a cold and usually come on suddenly, including a fever higher than 100.5 degrees, extreme exhaustion, severe muscle or body aches, a dry cough and chills.”
But, here’s where it gets tricky.

The Yale doctors say that Coronaviruses generally mimic a cold and flu when they first start out but often progress to a much more severe respiratory problem such as pneumonia.

So, how do you know which it is?

“If you don’t have a fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher that lasts for three to five days, you likely just have the common cold.”

But, according to the CDC, if your symptoms progress to shortness of breath, body aches and chills you could be infected with one of the more dangerous types of the coronavirus.

Beyond that, at this time, you should look at your risk factors and see a doctor whether you think the flu or Coronavirus is behind your symptoms. That’s because Influenza is nothing to scoff at. As of mid-January, we’ve seen 6,600 deaths in the U.S. from flu.

Your Risks
If you’ve been around someone who has recently returned from China, Coronavirus could be behind your symptoms. And, of course, like with every virus, including flu and cold, you’re far more likely to be struck by Coronavirus if you’re older, living with other medical issues, or have a weakened immune system.

Bottom line: When in doubt, don’t mess around. See a doctor!

Protecting Yourself From Coronavirus
In the meantime, it’s vital to take steps to protect yourself from this latest viral outbreak by boosting your immune system so it’s ready to fight if and when it becomes necessary and using basic hygiene precautions.
Things like washing your hands regularly throughout the day, wearing a mask in crowds, and disinfecting items that are touched regularly, like light switches and doorknobs can help limit the spread of all types of viruses, including flu, colds, and Coronavirus.

Supplements To Pump Up Your Immune System

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra): Stimulates immune cells called macrophages, stops viral replication of influenza and inactivates the virus. Use it in the form of deglycerized licorice if you have any blood pressure issues, after discussing it with your doctor.
•Tulsi or Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum): Has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral activity and stimulates the immune system.
•Garlic (Allium sativum): Has shown antiviral activity against influenza and common cold viruses.
•Coconut (Cocos nucifera): Contains medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA) with potent antiviral activity.
•Ginger (Zingiber officinale): Has antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties.
•Hibiscus tea: Viral pandemic protection in a teacup
•Indian gooseberry, aka amla, (Phyllanthus emblica): Has immune-strengthening and antiviral activity.
•Green tea (Camellia sinensis): Has potent antiviral properties as well as immune enhancement activities.
•Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea): Activates infection-fighting capacity for faster recovery and reduction of symptoms when taken at the first sign of cold or flu.
*Olive Leaf Extract. Olive leaf is an antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and an anti-parasitic.
•NAC, the flu-fighting supplement that starves cancer.
•Black seed oil pressed from organic black Nigella Sativa seeds that have been highly researched for their ability to act as immune system modulators.

Mushrooms are also vital for immune support: They contain minerals known to be essential to proper immune function including zinc and selenium. They also possess 1,3 beta-glucans, a type of carbohydrate shown in numerous studies to modulate the immune system. Research shows these mushrooms can enhance the immune response to influenza vaccines.

Lastly, consider increasing the amount of vitamin D you take. And here’s why: Research in Africa shows that vitamin D possesses such powerful immunity benefits – your immune system’s T-cells and beta cells also have vitamin D receptors – that it can even help the body fight a virulent invader like HIV-1.

Hopefully, the next few weeks will see the spread of the virus die down thanks to containment and quarantine efforts across the globe. But, it just makes good sense to prepare, get your immune system in good shape, and practice disinfection measures, in order to protect yourself and your family in the meantime.

Wisconsin confirms. Probably one of those 6 Platteville students who went back to China for Christmas break

They also mention the patient is at UW hospital on campus, that's our high level triage center for the region so I would presume isolation protocol is underway. We have enormous Hmong population here as assimilated refugees post Vietnam, after serving our country and that demographic is potentially at risk. There is a large contingent in OshKosh/Appleton as well

"...DHS staff said there are more potential cases in Wisconsin
and are waiting for tests results in those cases. Ten people
have been tested in Wisconsin, seven of those tests came back negative..."
