Yahoo to shut down maps and other sections

NEW YORK (AP) -- Yahoo will close its maps page, and several other sites, as it focuses on its search business, communication tools and content.

The Internet company said Friday that it will close its map, which gives users driving directions and traffic conditions, at the end of the month.

Yahoo will also close several sites worldwide, including Yahoo Music in Canada and France, Yahoo Movies in Spain and Yahoo Autos in the U.K. Yahoo's main Philippines page will also close, and users will be sent to Yahoo Singapore instead.

The company announced the closings in a blog post. A Yahoo representative declined to comment further.

Yahoo Inc. is streamlining its business as it tries to increase its audience and capture more ad dollars. It announced a deal Wednesday to show a live NFL game, and it has signed other content deals with media companies.

What they need to do is focus on getting their email service to work consistently. They provide the mail service for Verizon, att, and several other large companies. If they shut down frou-frou to improve real services then I'm not going to complain.

Yahoo lost its position on the web when it changed management a couple years ago....now they have become a clone of AOL....I don't even go there any more.

Yahoo search is run by BING, but just setup to look like its all done by Yahoo

Bing I like as an alternative to google and they actually come much closer to what I am searching for. Heck of a lot more kid friendly as far as content than google as well.

Anyone have any good suggestions for search engines other than yahoo?

I am very happy with this,

https://startpage.com/

StartPage Protects Your Privacy!

StartPage, and its sister search engine Ixquick, are the only third-party certified search engines in the world that do not record your IP address or track your searches.

Your privacy is under attack!

Every time you use a regular search engine, your search data is recorded. Major search engines capture your IP address and use tracking cookies to make a record of your search terms, the time of your visit, and the links you choose - then they store that information in a giant database.

Those searches reveal a shocking amount of personal information about you, such as your interests, family circumstances, political leanings, medical conditions, and more. This information is modern-day gold for marketers, government officials, black-hat hackers and criminals - all of whom would love to get their hands on your private search data.

Why should you worry?

Major search engines have quietly amassed the largest database of personal information on individuals ever collected. Unfortunately, this data can all too easily fall into the wrong hands. Consider the following story:

In August 2006, the online world was jarred when AOL accidentally released three months' worth of aggregated search data from 650,000 of its users, publishing all the details in an online database.

That database is still searchable. It is an absolute eye-opener to see the potential for privacy nightmares.

» Enter a query and find who searched for it
» Then click on a "User ID" to find what else this user searched for

Shocked? You are not alone.

When we search, we share our most private thoughts with our computers. These private thoughts should be safe.

StartPage's position,

- You have a right to privacy.
- Your search data should never fall into the wrong hands.
- The only real solution is quickly deleting your data or not storing them to begin with.
- Since January 2009 we do not record our users' IP addresses anymore.
- We were the first and only search engine to do so.
- Our initiative is receiving an overwhelmingly positive response

StartPage will wholeheartedly continue on its mission to offer you great search results in the best possible privacy!

ixquick and startpage are the same, use a proxy to utilize google search without google logging the actual user.

duckduckgo hijacked my search options (I had startpage as my default) and refused to let go of it until I dug deep and went duck hunting. It was a struggle but I won. I HATE that damn duck.

are there any search engines that have news, weather, sports, maps, email like yahoo has and still protects your privacy? or not?

Yahoo is blatantly biased against conservatives and is very pro homosexual.
