I understand your visceral reaction to this; you're absolutely right - it is a horrible thing.

But western culture - and most specifically north Americans - have been sheltered for so long and gotten so soft mentally and emotionally that we can't handle truth anymore. Continuing to stick our heads in the sand doesn't help anyone and actually makes the problem worse by ignoring it.

Things like child brides, child mothers, young boys used as sex toys in certain cultures, rampant slavery, inter-tribal massacres and human trafficking need to be put into our face more often, to remind us that the number of people who are destitute and desperate probably are in the billions instead of mere millions.

It's also a reminder of our possible future - maybe not child brides and mothers, hopefully - which could very well lead to the sort of desperation and deprivation which these pictures show. I think we need these kinds of raw truth shoved at us to get our minds hardened up for what's coming.

The world’s youngest mom is 5-year-old Lina Medina of Peru. She gave birth to a baby boy on May 14, 1939.

She is still alive, at age 87.



How could a 5-year-old have a baby?


She had a condition known as precocious puberty. No one ever determined who the father was or how she was impregnated.

The others pictured did give birth at the ages indicated as well.

Well, boys can be more precocious than one might think. Some guy was running a web page counting teachers who had grazed vigorously in their student body. Of the 175+ cases he had, there were two cases of teachers getting impregnated by 11yr old boys.

Unfortunately I lost the page so i have no idea what more he might have discovered.
