I understand your visceral reaction to this; you're absolutely right - it is a horrible thing.
But western culture - and most specifically north Americans - have been sheltered for so long and gotten so soft mentally and emotionally that we can't handle truth anymore. Continuing to stick our heads in the sand doesn't help anyone and actually makes the problem worse by ignoring it.
Things like child brides, child mothers, young boys used as sex toys in certain cultures, rampant slavery, inter-tribal massacres and human trafficking need to be put into our face more often, to remind us that the number of people who are destitute and desperate probably are in the billions instead of mere millions.
It's also a reminder of our possible future - maybe not child brides and mothers, hopefully - which could very well lead to the sort of desperation and deprivation which these pictures show. I think we need these kinds of raw truth shoved at us to get our minds hardened up for what's coming.
