An attacker with a knife killed three people and wounded several others at a church in the French city of Nice, French media and police said, in an incident the city's mayor described as terrorism.

Mayor Christian Estrosi said on Twitter the knife attack had happened in or near the city's Notre Dame church and that police had detained the suspect.

The French anti-terrorist prosecutor's department said it had been asked to investigate the attack.

Reuters journalists at the scene said police armed with automatic weapons had put up a security cordon around the church, which is on Nice's Jean Medecin avenue, the city's main shopping thoroughfare.

The attack comes while France is still reeling from the murder earlier this month of French middle school teacher Samuel Paty by a man of Chechen origin.

The attacker had said he wanted to punish Mr Paty for showing pupils cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed in a civics lesson.

It was not immediately clear what the motive was for the Nice attack, or if there was any connection to the cartoons, which Muslims consider to be blasphemous.

Since Mr Paty's killing, French officials have re-asserted the right to display the cartoons, and the images have been widely displayed at marches in solidarity with the teacher.

That has prompted an outpouring of anger in parts of the Muslim world, with some governments accusing French leader Emmanuel Macron of pursuing an anti-Islam agenda.

At least three people have been killed - two of them beheaded - and several others stabbed in a terrorist knife attack at a cathedral in Nice.
The attack began around 9am just as Mass at the Notre Dame basilica - the largest Roman Catholic church in Nice - was getting underway.
Police quickly swarmed the area, where they shot and arrested the attacker, who has been taken to hospital. A police source said it appears he was acting alone.

Mayor Christian Estrosi revealed that two of the victims died inside the church - a woman and a male church warden, both of whom were beheaded. Another woman later died of her injuries.
Estrosi told reporters that the attacker 'kept shouting Allahu Akbar even after being medicated', and that 'the meaning of his gesture is not in doubt'.
'Enough is enough,' he said. 'It's time now for France to exonerate itself from the laws of peace in order to definitively wipe out Islamo-fascism from our territory.'

A woman has been beheaded and two others killed by a knife-wielding attacker at a church in the French city of Nice.
Police officials confirmed to The Independent that two women and one man were killed and all had their throats cut.

In a separate incident, which occurred just hours later, a man wielding a handgun was shot dead by police near Avignon.

According to radio station Europe 1, the man was carrying a gun and threatening the public.
Both men are believed to have shouted “Allahu Akbar” (God is great) before carrying out the individual attacks.

A guard was stabbed at a French consulate in Saudi Arabia today, on a day which saw a knifeman murder three people in Nice and a gunman shot dead in Avignon.
The attacker was arrested after stabbing and injuring the guard with a 'sharp tool' at the French consulate in Jeddah, according to official media.

While no motive was given for the attack on the day of a festival marking the Prophet Mohammed's birthday, it comes amid anger at France from across the Islamic world after president Emmanuel Macron staunchly defended the blasphemous cartoons of the Prophet which led to a teacher's beheading.
France's embassy in Riyadh said the guard was taken to hospital and his life is not in danger, but condemned the 'attack on diplomatic premises which can never be justified'.

French diplomats also called on Saudi authorities to 'shed light on this attack' and ensure the safety of French people in the kingdom, where France has an embassy in Riyadh, an honorary consulate in Al-Khobar and French international schools.
'We call on our compatriots in Saudi Arabia to show maximum vigilance,' the embassy said after Saudi security forces apprehended the suspect, who is said to be a Saudi national in his 40s.

In France today, three people were killed at a church in Nice with two of them thought to have been beheaded by an attacker who repeatedly shouted 'Allahu Akbar'.

Later on Thursday morning, police said a man had been shot dead by cops in Avignon after threatening people with a handgun.

I wouldn't be so sure about that, there's been a lot that goes on unreported in France, Germany,and even Sweden; today's attack was during a Church Service.

My concern is just who is going to do the responding an organized and well thought out response from the French authorities (including the military if needed) or the non-Islamic population of France who can take a while to stir up but once they are, well there's always Bastile Day...

A lot of the Islamic Community in France goes back to the days when it had colonies in North Africa, but then most of the time those older communities are not the problem (though sometimes grandkids and great-grandkids get radicalized) the real problems tend to be with the "new" migrants.

Now that said, both Nightwolf and I have suspected for at least five years now that when the floodgates opened and thousands of military-aged Middle Eastern Men walked into Europe (along with a few women, children and elders) that there were almost certainly "military infiltrators" among those young men.

Trained Jihadist that would then look for and almost certainly find "useful idiots" like over-testosterone young fools that wouldn't dare look at young women in their own country (because her brothers would have their eye's in seconds) but can easily be "convinced" by the "real" soldiers to "rape a white girl for 'Allah'" type stuff.

We thought a few years ago and I am really starting to think it again now is that SOME OF THIS is DESIGNED TO GET A REACTION.

Once The French/Swedes/Germans/etc finally lose it and start reacting (as I said already happening but hidden as much as possible from the Media) it became really is to try and radicalize the older, more stable (and usually more secular) Islamic communities in Old Europe and the UK.

Because the trained "agent provocateurs" can turn around and say "see, the Muslims are now under attack! We must fight back," when really a few people (aka the Useful idiots and fanatics) got it started for them.

We could be wrong, but this whole thing smells like an operation, on that was going full speed a couple of years ago, slowed down for various reasons (including a lot of the flow of young men being stopped for a time),and is now kicking back up again.

Oh, and no one I know thinks Notre Dame in Paris was an accident either...the media just keeps saying it probably because they are told to say it.

Tunisia opens investigation into Tunisian suspect of Nice attack, says state-run media

An investigation has been opened in Tunisia following Nice attack, Tunisia's Public Prosecutor's Office said Thursday according to state-run TAP news.

“According to the initial elements of the investigation, the assailant [is] a Tunisian national,” Mohsen Dali, deputy public prosecutor, said.

Dali added that the prosecutor's office at the judicial counter-terrorism division has assigned the case to a specialized security unit for further research and investigation.

Earlier today, French authorities named Brahim Aouissaoui as the suspected attacker. He first arrived in Europe in September, a source briefed on the investigation told CNN.

Meanwhile, Tunisia’s Foreign Ministry condemned the attack in a statement. It expressed solidarity with the French government, its nationals, and offered condolences to the victims' families.

The latest terrorist killings to rock France as tensions grow centered on the country's firm free speech traditions as a secular republic vs. Muslim immigrant outrage over negative depictions of Muhammad in French media have grabbed international headlines, but other disturbing trends which have received much less attention suggest the violence looks to grow.

This week there have been reports of clashes between Turkish-Azeri demonstrators and Armenians on the streets of France. On Wednesday multiple videos circulated widely on social media which appear to show Muslim Turks and Azeris "hunting down" Armenian Christians as the war in Nagorno-Karabakh spills over onto the streets of Europe.


Some other European cities have also witnessed rising tensions between Turkish and Armenian neighborhoods related to conflict in the Caucasus.
Turkey is of course a close ally of Azerbaijan in the current fighting against Armenia in the breakaway Karabakh border region. Armenians as an ethnic group have also long been targets of Turkish hatred going all the way back to the Armenian Genocide of the early 20th century.

Here's how The Independent describes the below video from Lyon, France:
In one video shared by an independent Armenian outlet, people can be seen marching in Lyon with Turkish flags and chanting the phrase "allahu akbar", meaning "God is the greatest".
In the same piece of footage, a man can be heard saying in French: “Where are you Armenians? Where are you? We are here… sons of b*****s”.

The Independent said the videos appear to confirm the angry demonstrators were "looking for Armenians".
The mob reportedly formed after a pro-Armenia demonstration blocked a motorway connecting Lyon and Marseille on Wednesday morning.


The Armenian demonstration broke out into violence after Turkish nationalists reportedly tried to disrupt the rally. Clashes resulted in at least four injured, which French police are said to be investigating.

France’s Independent Union of Police Commissioners said in a tweet that over 150 people had engaged in a "punitive expedition in search of Armenians" in Vienne.
Turkish flags could be seen and nationalist chants heard, as well as anti-Armenian slogans amid the mayhem, which appeared to have eventually been broken up by police.

This is highly upsetting to me. Nice and the surrounding communities used to be fairly safe for women. Not walk around at 2 a.m., safe but women could go to church or the market early in the morning without fear.

I know: the leaders let the slime into the country. Something needs to be done. It's becoming a world-wide problem.

The large Jewish community in Nice, France is on edge this weekend following the horrific beheading of an elderly woman and the fatal stabbing of two others at the city's Notre Dame church on Thursday.

The killer has been identified as 21-year old migrant Brahim Issaoui who recently arrived from Tunisia. The man had shouted "Allahu Akbar" just before police shot him. The man had been carrying a Koran. French President Emmanuel Macron said in the wake of the attack that "France is under attack from Islamist terrorists."

"We are being attacked [for] our values: Freedom and the refusal to give in to terrorism," he added of the second major Islamic terror attack this month. More than two weeks ago teacher Samuel Paty was beheaded in a northern Paris suburb after showing Charlie Hebdo cartoons to his students.

Multiple Middle East countries, including Lebanon and Pakistan witnessed large Muslim protests in front of the French embassies in the countries Friday. Macron is being called "anti-Islamic" as tensions mount in a very similar way to what triggered the Charlie Hebdo killings. The January 7, 2015 Charlie Hebdo massacre left 12 people dead after the newspaper published a series of cartoons perceived as mocking the founder of Islam Muhammad.

Recall too that the three day long Charlie Hebdo related violence in 2015 ended when a terrorist held 19 hostages at a Jewish supermarket during a standoff with police. Four Jewish shoppers had been murdered before the standoff was over, as CNN recounts:
Three days of violence began with a massacre at the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, which had previously published controversial cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed. They ended with a siege at a kosher supermarket.

And now the Times of Israel reports that synagogues and Jewish schools are temporarily shutting down on fears another attack:

The Jewish community of Nice, France, is keeping its 15 synagogues and three schools closed and increasing security around kosher shops following the killing of three people in a church by a man shouting "God is great" in Arabic.
"We have decided to close all the schools tomorrow," the chief rabbi of Nice, Franck-Daniel Teboul, told Israel’s Channel 13 Thursday. “The synagogues will also be closed. Kosher shops are on alert.”

"We’re all feeling threatened," the rabbi said further.

More broadly French citizens living or traveling abroad have also been warned by the government that they could be under threat.
