I laughed so hard my side hurt when I saw this headline - so once a product/company becomes "toxic" (think Agent Orange) you just arrange a buyout, dump the name and the public thinks it has gone away! Now you can have a bit of RoundUp Ready GMO seeds with your Aspirin...

With deal to close this week, Bayer to retire Monsanto name

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Germany’s Bayer (BAYGn.DE) will wrap up the $63 billion takeover of Monsanto (MON.N) on Thursday and also retire the U.S. seeds maker’s 117 year-old name.

The German drugmaker had received all required approvals from regulatory authorities, it said in a statement on Monday.

“Bayer will remain the company name. Monsanto will no longer be a company name. The acquired products will retain their brand names and become part of the Bayer portfolio,” it said.

Bayer launched a 6 billion euro ($7 billion) rights issue on Sunday, a cornerstone of the financing package for the deal, shortly after clearing the last major antitrust hurdle in the United States.

The deal is the first of a trio of major U.S.-German merger deals to cross the finish line at a time of harsh criticism by U.S. President Donald Trump of Germany’s trade surplus with the United States.

Deutsche Telekom’s (DTEGn.DE) T-Mobile US (TMUS.O) plans to merge with Sprint for $26 billion, while industrial gases makers Linde (LING.DE) and Praxair (PX.N) are also seeking to combine.

Bayer was expected to rid itself of the target’s name. Monsanto, the largest - though not the only - maker of genetically modified seeds, has been a lightning rod for environmentalists’ opposition to the technology.

The U.S. seed maker has also drawn criticism for pursuing its intellectual property rights with farmers, many of which depend on its seeds, more aggressively than its peers.

“We aim to deepen our dialogue with society. We will listen to our critics and work together where we find common ground. Agriculture is too important to allow ideological differences to bring progress to a standstill,” Bayer Chief Executive Werner Baumann said in the statement.

The companies’ separately listed Indian units, Bayer CropScience Ltd. (BAYE.NS) and Monsanto India Ltd. (MNSN.NS), will continue to operate independently for the time being, Bayer said in a separate statement.

Exactly like ACORN when it was found to be criminal. The name changed, but the rot stayed.

changes name to protect the criminal

They did this with Agent Orange too, when I read part of this to my husband (whose hobby is studying WWII among other things, and he read's German) he said: "ah yes Bayer, the guys that were up to their eyeballs with the Nazi's, how appropriate."

I said yeah and for people my age, many will associate the name Bayer with "Bayer Aspirin for Children; kind, gentle, orange flavored tablets.."

I mean to be fair, Bayer and doctors didn't know at the time that Aspirin was really dangerous to give tiny-tots that was only discovered much later but still...the name survived the NAZI's and the discoveries about baby aspirin, but I'm not sure it will survive having Monsanto for lunch and then trying to burp out the GMO Seed and Round Up Agenda, especially in Europe where consumers long ago bolted with their wallets.

Bayer owned IG Farben, the makers of Zyklon B. Remember that fine chemical? 6 million innocent Jews got gassed by Zyklon B. Bayer developed any number of the poison gases that were used on the battlefields of WW 1.

And now they're buying Monsanto, whose name conjures images of Agent Orange and Roundup.

I think they should ditch the Bayer label-Bayer has a lot of blood on it's hands from the past-Monsanto is comparatively "clean" by comparison.

Pretty much what my husband said, in terms of historical background anyway.

Companies changing names always hints to me that the company has done things, bad things, things for which it should not be rewarded, nor should those buying it and hoping to continue business as usual with a different name stuck over the misbehavior.

A Rose by any other name......is still a Rose.

Changing a name is not going to change the evil that is Monsanto.....now we'll just know it as Bayer.
