The end times are here.
I just came across this article that, in essence, says that Microsoft has taken the liberty, with YOUR COMPUTER, to automatically install Windows 10, whether you want to or not! I've been carefully examining every Windows update downloaded to my machine and have found repeated efforts to download Windows 10 by default by Windows Update. I've unchecked the box next to the update and clicked "Hide Update" but apparently, that's no longer effective.

It really makes me wonder why Microsoft is ramming this down our throats....

Microsoft no longer lets you opt-out of a Windows 10 upgrade

If you haven’t already updated your computer to Windows 10 and it is eligible for a free upgrade, then prepare yourself for more aggressive update notifications that no longer give you the ability to opt-out.

Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users are reporting popups that inform them their Windows 10 upgrade will be installed in one hour. Users have the option to start the process immediately or reschedule it, but there is no longer an option to opt-out of upgrading altogether, ZDNet reports.

Not even GWX Control Panel, a third-party tool that allowed Windows users to avoid the upgrade before, is able to sidestep these notifications at present, according to the app’s creator, Josh Mayfield

Our internet-connected computers are used only for browsing and have no data on them. Our important ones have no internet connection. If Windows 10 can jump the air gap, we're in trouble. Otherwise, have at it, dudes.

Odd One and some of the other uber-geeks here have told us that it's only the "reminders" that upload w/o our consent---but we can ignore or even remove those. They're ASSURED us that Windows 10 itself will NOT install unless we click those "reminder icons" to tell it to.

Has this now changed?

Yes.

Here's another article:

Windows 10: Microsoft is trying way too hard to get you to upgrade

The longer you wait to upgrade your Windows 7 or Windows 8 PC to Windows 10, the more annoying Microsoft is going to be. According to reports around the Internet, some users are beginning to receive notifications to upgrade that don’t allow them to opt out, instead giving them the option to either begin the upgrade or reschedule for a future date.

But that’s not all — ZDNet reports that some users are also finding that Windows Update now only gives them a single option: Upgrade to Windows 10. They can’t even see pertinent updates to their current operating systems.

In an update to a previous blog post, Josh Mayfield, creator of the GWX Control Panel (which allowed users to remove the “Get Windows 10” icon from the control panel), says there’s nothing you can do to fix either of these issues yet.

Under a question asking whether or not GWX Control Panel can help, this is what Mayfield had to say:

“At this time, no. […] If you are seeing either of the [two screens below], exactly as they appear here, GWX Control Panel is not yet able to help you, although I am looking into whether it’s possible to fix these things through software. I do not have any recommendations at the moment, though, unfortunately.”

Upgrade to Windows 10 Is Ready

This news, coupled with the reports that Microsoft is automaticaly installing Windows 10 in the background on many Windows 7 and 8 computers, is certainly troublesome for users that are perfectly happy with their operating systems.

Unfortunately, it looks like Microsoft is going to force everyone to get up to speed, no matter what it takes.

Microsoft doesn't give anything away for free, so there must be a really bad reason why they want us all to upgrade so badly. Can you say HELL NO! Can you say lawsuits?

I haven't had any notices of the Windows 10 update.

No pop-ups.

At least not yet.

And this is why I refuse to let my computer check for updates or auto download ANYTHING from them. I turn off auto updates the first thing on every machine I own. I also shut off all the other garbage MS uses to sneak up updates like background intelligent transfer service. I can turn the service on or off if I certain program needs it, but it stays disabled for the most part.

Same here. In Win7 click on <Start> <Settings> <Control Panel> <Windows Upgrade> <Upgrade Settings> and then uncheck ALL of the boxes. MS will give you dire warnings that <gasp> your system will be unprotected . . . true, but at least it will not be infected with Win10 malware.

YMMV

How old is your machine? It may be too old. Or even if not that old it may not have the necessary hardware features required for Windows 10 to properly install and run.

Keep in mind, you do not OWN the software (your current version of Windows). You LICENSE the software from Microsoft. From a legal standpoint, as far as filing lawsuits, etc. that changes everything. They are not messing with something YOU own. They are messing with something THEY own.

Interesting point. Both of my Win7 machines were purchased a year before Win8 was released, so I may have been saved by the hardware.

I am however looking forward to Linux Mint KDE eventually incorporating touch screen drivers. I have been a using MS since IBM-DOS, but Win7 is the end of the line for me. If I really need a Windows app, I will just run it in a Windows Vista VM on a Linux OS.

I have it on a new laptop and I don't like it..I love my seven. set mine to not download or install any updates on this old one and they still do. I believe they override our settings.

Microsoft seems increasingly desperate. This sort of bullying of their users is a sign of weakness, not strength.

I have an older dual-boot laptop with Windows 7 and Linux Mint. Lately I only use the Linux side, and I'm not even bothering with Win7. No more updates, nothing.

I saw somewhere (thought it might have been in here)
that Microsoft is intent upon implementing a LEASE form of Windows,
with version 10 being the on-ramp.

Version 10 Can Not Be Declined by some range of newer-than-XP users.

Yup, heresay. What I have seen, but don't recall the where. FWIW

Windows 10 upgrade installing automatically on some Windows 7, 8 systems
Microsoft says that the optional update was enabled by mistake.

For the first year of its availability, Windows 10 is available for free to most Windows 7 and 8 users, and Microsoft has been trying to coax those users to make the switch by delivering the operating system through Windows Update. Until now, the OS has been delivered as an optional update; while Windows Update gives it prominent positioning, it shouldn't be installed automatically.

This system has already generated some complaints, as Windows Update will download the sizeable operating system installer even if you don't intend to upgrade any time soon, but, over the last couple of days, the situation seems to have become a little more aggressive. We've received a number of reports that people's systems are not merely downloading the installer but actually starting it up.

Our own testing shows that, yes, the optional update is getting chosen by default, and that's not supposed to happen to optional updates.

For those not wanting to make the switch to Windows 10 just yet, all is not lost; the installer does require human intervention to actually proceed, so you won't run the risk of waking up to find your PC running a different operating system. If you're not paying attention, though, you may find yourself upgrading sooner than you expected.

We've asked Microsoft what's going on, and the company tells us that enabling the update was done accidentally:

As part of our effort to bring Windows 10 to existing genuine Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 customers, the Windows 10 upgrade may appear as an optional update in the Windows Update (WU) control panel. This is an intuitive and trusted place people go to find Recommended and Optional updates to Windows. In the recent Windows update, this option was checked as default; this was a mistake and we are removing the check.

Hopefully I'm ok. I checked and it says: Windows update is not set up for this computer

Had a fellow who worked with the hubby in the IT section build this for me years back so maybe I'm okay

I am within the thinness of a hair of going full linux and just doing without windows. I have secured the ability to do about anything I want under linux, it is that very small amount of windoz things that keep me from deleting it from this last machine.

I do keep a hammer handy in case it ever turns on me and needs beat to death however. :-)

Look, you can mount Linux on the box then a VM client such as VMWare Fusion, and mount WinDoze inside the VM. Then, when you need a Windows function, you can just launch it inside the VM. As an added bonus, virii and malware can't infect your host machine.
