Why store paper?

I want to encourage y'all in storing paper alternatives.

I cloth diaper my two youngest. I've cd'd off and on for almost 18 years and cd have come a loooong way. Besides it being a great way to save money today it's a great way to be sure you can meet toileting needs in any future SHTF event. If you bought a dozen prefolds and 2 Pro-raps in S/M/L you would pretty much be set. If you're prepping for more than one baby buy two dozen prefolds.

Along w/cloth dipes I use cloth wipes. They will be an excellent alternative for the rest of us if we can no longer go to the store for tp. Cloth wipes w/water are MUCH cleaner than using tp and are not difficult to wash at all. Also, for the ladies there are many alternatives to conventional products, ie. the Diva Cup.

I use cloth napkins and have many cloth towels/rags for my kitchen. We also use handkerchiefs instead of kleenex

I've saved our family a lot of money. As long as you have access to water (it doesn't even have to be potable water) you can wash out your 'family cloth'.

Wondering
Good Thread. I totaly agree, because at some point you are going to run out of the paper products then what?

I don't have the room to store 10 years of paper products but I can probably get 10 years out of my cloth dipes!

Also, a big motivator for me was the chlorine and chemicals that are in disposable dipes and pads being so close to our genitals for hours at a time. That is not good.

UC.... do you have an online source for cloth diapers and "pro-rap" (and WHAT, exactly, is a "pro-rap", anyway? Can you tell my youngest is 24?! LOL!)

I can just imagine hubby's face if he ever finds out I'm storing DIAPERS!! ROTFLMAO! Although, he discovered my stash of 6 pairs (all different sizes, all tiny) of babies and children's winter boots... and when he saw the "$2" clearance price marked on the boxes, all he said was "wow! Great deal!" Nope.. no grandkids yet, but DD is talking about it now, oldest son is getting married next year to a gal who definitely wants kids, youngest son is engaged/living with a girl who is a Greek, and whose entire culture says "get married, have babies, stay home with them" (not sure how they're gonna manage that, but I hope they can!).

And second son's wife, who always swore she never wanted kids (but she also swore she wasn't ever getting married- bad examples in her family. They're going on 7 years of wedded bliss. Never say never!)... well, I've noticed a distinct softening in her stance lately.

Not to mention the obvious- ALL of them are on birth control... and if that becomes difficult/impossible to get, all bets are off!

So... guess who is thinking about stuff like this (and I know they aren't!).

I have tons of patterns and cloth for all the essential baby clothes, but not diapers. Any links would be greatly appreciated!

Summerthyme, proraps are a type of diaper cover. Much much nicer than the old plastic pants used to be.

I've used cloth diapers with three out of five of my children, and they are SOOO worth it! They were expensive to get, but I haven't had to buy diapers in years...

My personal favorites are Fuzzi Bunz and Kissaluvs brands, which are "fitted" diapers. I prefer them because when I had two or more in diapers at once (my own and foster kids), ease of use is a huge point! But really there are so many different types out there, and they all have their good points and not-so-good points. I know that Mother-Ease brand is fairly popular... I've been out of the "loop" with cloth diapering for a few years, because I have no need to buy more, so I'm sure there are lots of new ones that I'm not aware of.

Cheapest will be Chinese prefolds and some basic covers, like the Proraps. These are also going to be the most labor intensive (but they still are pretty easy!). Most expensive will be the All-in-one type. Fitteds fall somewhere in the middle.

Hope that helps a little. Hate to say it, but you could spend literally hours researching the different types.

I just throw them in the washer. One hot rinse, one hot wash and one cold rinse. I only use a teensy amount of detergent. No bleach is necessary. After TSHTF I will just use a wash bucket and plunger, same as my other laundry.

Summerthyme, if you're storing 'just in case' you can go to Walmart and buy the cheap pre-folds that we used 'back in the day'. You can find plastic pants and pins there, too, but Proraps are WAY easier. You don't have to have pins and they open like paper dipes so they are not as messy as pulling down plastic pants when they've had a blow out.

If you want to get fancy and easy go to fuzzibunzworld.com and order the 12 dipe package. That will be plenty for you to easily go 2-3 days(when combined w/limited use of paper dipes or prefolds). I use both because my kids & dh prefer dipe changes w/Fuzzibunz. I use FB until I run out and then switch to prefolds while I launder the load of FB.
