I give up.
Would this absolutely protect against a guy with a crowbar popping a locked steel door? I ask because it happened to me once a long time ago.

I'd say there are no absolutes... Security should be like onions and cake and have layers.

What they did by "popping" was must likely get enough flex in the door frame that the latch and or dead bolt no longer did what it was supposed to do...one way to combat this is with up armoring your frame/door and use a deadbolt with a longer throw.

So you never leave your home?

Of course, but not very often and usually not very long. It's all a percentage game anyway.

Besides, after one upgrades the door/frame, etc., what's to keep the perp from just smashing a window and coming in that way? A shotgun/handgun will handle that situation whereas the upgraded door/frame is just sitting there doing essentially nothing.

A "real" upgrade to the doors would be like the ones they have in Israel with multiple bolts into the door frame like a safe, but that won't help you if you've got windows and sliding glass doors.

Again security is not a single magic bullet.

If you harden a door, you should be hardening other entry points, nothing is fool proof...
