Veg Who is planting their fall gardens?

Just got a ton of mustard greens direct sowed into one of my raised beds. I was going to get all of my beds planted today but it seems DH loaned out my tiller. I'd love to plant cabbage and brussel sprouts but I just can't keep fighting the wildlife who adore it. I've tried hardware cloth and everything but we have some determined critters and wild rabbits galore. I do plan on getting some more parsley and green onions planted in my window boxes. From there it goes into the freeze dryer as we use alot. When it gets too cold I can bring them in and put them on the interior south facing windows upstairs. As soon as I get my tiller back I will plant carrots and onion sets. I'm also hoping to till another section for garlic.

So what are you planting in your fall garden?

I’ve just about finished cleaning out my fall garden. Pulled and picked the last of my bush beans today Still will have a few pole beans thru frost. Letting my collards go until frost (ave frost day Oct 19 here).

Still have green tomatoes but with the shorter days now will get a few more ripe ones.

Had extremely dry august and sept. Did water some of the garden but this time of year here is close to end of the garden.

same here; dryer than usual September in particular . . . started pulling up some of the peppers, tomatoes and squash that's done or close to it. there are still some green tomatoes and peppers turning red, some eggplant coming along, but for the most part we're about done here as well

A friend came up to help so the broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower all got put in. And got frost covers.

There's garlic to go in but I've got two to four weeks before that needs to go in. And depending on how well recovery goes, onions will be going in.

There were plans for radishes, turnips, and rutabaga but those may end up as early spring plantings. Again, it depends on recovery.

At our place we have finished planting the Fall garden. We are planting late due to lack of rain and forecast of dryness thru Oct. Still have our late varieties of muscadines to harvest and purple hull peas which we planted late trying to avoid all the peas/beans coming in at once. We planted all the southern greens and root crops and broccoli, rutabagas, beets, Brussels sprouts, etc! Makes me hungry just to think about it! Oh and we planted a deer garden also. Hate for them to go hungry!!

We planted 2 types of radishes, a late crop of zucchini and yellow squash that are putting on lots with no bugs yet. Then carrots, broccolini and turnips, beets and lettuce are in the vertical gardens. We have tomatoes ready to go into the greenhouse. The corn is a week away from picking. So far the insect load is small compared to the summer.

Well my plans just got put out to pasture. While I was inside DH decided to install some drip irrigation (yes, the one I've been begging him to install for 2 years now) right after I'd planted all of my mustard greens. Seeds buried to deep to do anything now. My youngest son showed up to return my tiller with 6 cabbage plants, 6 brussel sprout plants, 6 lettuce plants and 6 mustard green plants for me to plant in my garden. I love my guys but their timing needs tweaking. Looks like I'll be busy through tomorrow getting the rest of the beds done.

I rooted a couple of tomato cuttings from a large cherry type and transplanted them I the greenhouse. DDILhas cukes and peas started in there... maybe more. I think I'm going to try digging up one or two sweet pepper plants that were started very late... for some reason, a few seeds came up just about the time the rest of the plants (in the same tray, planted the same time!) Were ready to transplant, and we planted then outvwhen they were very small.

They are starting to set fruit, and I think I'll try transplanting a couple to the greenhouse, to see if we can get early winter peppers.

The weather here has been incredible, and we're looking at 80s the next few days, but temps are going to drop hard after this week. We do have a small box stove in the greenhouse, so can keep it going until we see temps in the single digits.

Been there done that back in grammer school.

As far as planting we've transplanted some multiplying onions in on half of one of my new planter boxes. Have to get more soil to plant in the other half and the second 8' box.

I'm thinking about herbs, any suggestions for medicinal herbs to grow here in Louisiana?

I'm looking to plant Russian Comfrey first and foremost to have on hand in my gardening medicinal armory. It is so good for pest control and provides so much nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus to your garden. For people medicine I want echinacea, white sage, ginger and turmeric for now. The rest double as my cooking plants for the most part so they go in the main garden in spring.

I normally have a fall garden of lettuce and greens, but with my first knee replacement surgery coming up in less than 2 weeks, it's going to be a scramble just to get minimal garden things done before then. I need to harvest the rest of the peppers, any more tomatoes, do whatever repotting of irises, take care of the ornamentals, and put pots and things away, in preparation for our winter rainy season. (I expect to be on a walker into at least December, so no gardening.)

One thing that I *will* do is take cuttings of basil (and maybe mint) so I can have something to play with indoors, and have a bit of fresh herbs. Maybe some dwarf coreopsis as well.

Planted late broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower late July or early August.
Broccoli is just starting and cabbage is just starting to make heads.
No Cauliflower yet.

Will plant my garlic in a couple weeks.
Still getting some tomatoes.
If I can get boxes, I'll pull the rest of the green ones to ripen.

Then, it's clean up and mulch.
