Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Friday extended her stay-at-home order past its scheduled May 28 expiration to June 12, adding that public venues such as theaters, gyms and casinos would remain closed, reports the Detroit Free Press.

She said while coronavirus cases and deaths are clearly declining, "we are not out of the woods yet."

"If we're going to lower the chance of a second wave and continue to protect our neighbors and loved ones from the spread of this virus, we must continue to do our part by staying safer at home," she said in a statement first reported by the Free Press.

Whitmer's announcement comes a day after she made several changes to further relax a sweeping stay-at-home order that has been in place since March, allowing social gatherings of 10 people or less immediately and telling retail businesses that sell goods they can reopen to customers for appointment-only shopping Tuesday.

That change also allows for non-emergency dental and doctor services to resume next Friday and Whitmer said Thursday that she would continue to relax the order as warranted by the data.

She had previously allowed some retail businesses, such as garden stores and bicycle repair shops to reopen, and at 12:01 a.m. Friday, bars, restaurants and other businesses and offices on the Upper Peninsula and in northern Michigan around Traverse City, could open to customers, provided they limited their customers, made sure people stayed six feet apart and required masks.

Manufacturing and construction have resumed as well, under strict regulations. But many parts of Whitmer's rules — which have been challenged in court and led to protests at the state Capitol — continue to disrupt the lives of Michiganders.

Large gatherings, for instance, are not allowed, and people must wear masks or other face coverings when in closed spaces.

Barber shops and hair salons remain closed, as door sporting and entertainment venues, gyms, casinos and more. Short-term vacation rentals are not allowed. Schools and camps remain closed.

The extension of the order means all of those rules will remain in place at least until June 12, unless Whitmer decides to relax them before that.

As the impact of the virus has lessened in recent weeks, many states across the U.S. have either entirely lifted their orders or relaxed them somewhat, as Whitmer has.

While opponents of the governor's, including Republican leaders in the state Legislature, have challenged her authority both to issue such orders and to extend them, they so far have withstood legal efforts to reverse them.

A Court of Claims judge on Thursday dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Legislature questioning Whitmer's right to extend a state of emergency in Michigan under the law.
That decision was appealed by legislative leaders on Friday but for now it means Whitmer can extend her stay-at-home order.

A poll released this week by the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce found that 64% of Michigan voters surveyed support her handling of the crisis, compared to 33% who did not.
As of Friday, 5,158 Michiganders have died of coronavirus, or Covid-19, since March and the state has recorded 53,913 cases, making it one of the hardest hit states in the nation. Whitmer has repeatedly said she will continue parts of the order, or potentially reinstate them, to prevent a resurgence.

"If we open too soon, thousands more could die and our hospitals will get overwhelmed," she said. "While we finally have more protective equipment like masks, we can't run the risk of running low again."

The governor said she was also extending the duration of other orders issued to protect workers, allowing them to remain at home if they or others around them are sick; restoring water service to those whose water has been shut off; and affirming nondiscrimination policies when providing care to people who contract the virus as well as others.

whitmer is a democrat, she would keep the state locked down for a year if she could get away with it, or at least until the election. This is all about making Pres Trump look bad.
Mike
Trump opened churches. Whitmer's keeping everything closed.

How does TRUMP look bad?

Even the brainwashed media jackals can't be fooled by the evidence of their own eyes. I know someone'll be in here to say otherwise, but look at the evidence of your OWN eyes! Who's PROTESTING TRUMP??

Oh, and one last fun question...why only two weeks this time? Every other time, she's gone a month at a time. Why just two weeks this time?

Sounds great, Nuge! Now, I'll just go watch this ball game...oh wait, WHAT ball game? Never mind, off to the movies! ...wait, what movie? Okay, fine, I'll get my hair cut...who's open?

All of this is just yelling in an empty room until a business opens.
Yep ... Ted is just wasting time. Love the guy but that post means nothing if he can’t go out to eat. He needs to protest in Lansing ... rockers for freedom. Maybe he can get Kid Rock to join him.

Because it’s getting close to screwing up everyone’s 4th of July plans. If she just said another 30 days the public would be going ape shit over her announcing it early.

This way she saves herself some grief for a few weeks.

She saves herself grief for two weeks. If she follows up with two more on top of that, people start getting ready to spend the Fourth protesting. And that one would likely be a monster.

But the churches aren't closed....
Her completely opening Michigan is the last wave of her plans. That ... she said ... will not happen until there’s a vaccine or cure. She said this during 3 different briefings she‘s had. I suspect some things will slowly be opened ... as we’re seeing, to keep people somewhat civil. But maybe schools in the fall, along with others she will hold back on.

Who knows what the Covid queen will do.

Who CARES what the Covid queen will do? The churches. Are. Open.

Which means there's nothing stopping everything else. All Trump has to do is declare them essential using the Defense Production Act, and boom! Open! No way to stop it without actually breaking the law. I'd love to see Whitmer in handcuffs.

Big traffic jam on 131 north today. Lots of campers in the dispersed areas around Houghton Lake. Most are not waering masks in northern Mi. Lets see how many vote in nov. Heil Halfwit.
So you‘re talking about the gas pipe line area to the west of Houghton, by the ORV trails? I know she hasn’t opened campgrounds, state or private. Our motorhome is collecting dust and I’m not at all happy with this shut down. We only go to private campgrounds and these places are going to be hurting bad.

I had a co-worker tell me today her boyfriend said he saw tons of campers heading north up I-75 today. I wondered were they were going. Now we know. But that’s all state land or national forest isn’t it? That should be closed too ... wonder how that’s going to work.

yes ... but he hasn’t. We haven’t got to that point yet. She won her first court battle a week ago.

if you form your question the right way

only the answer that you desire

is acceptable

you can also edit or delete all the answers that don't go with your agenda

but I,m not cynical
Yes, or as said already, ask those you want a certain outcome. Not hard at all to get your desired answer

the people from Michigan need to print that picture and keep on their person..
so when the social distancing Nazi's say any thing to you just pull out the pic and say if it is OK for her then it is OK for me..
That‘s why we need to know if it was from this week. If from before ... it’s irrelevant.
