White House to charge reporters $170 per COVID test: Report
by Haley Victory Smith, Breaking News Reporter |
3-4 minutes
The White House will reportedly begin requiring reporters to pay a proposed $170 per COVID-19 test for each visit, prompting backlash from correspondents who cover the president and other journalists.
Officials in President Biden's team claim these daily tests, which have thus far been paid for by the White House, have become a strain on the budget, according to a Friday report from the Washington Post, which said the White House is expected to implement the change on Monday.
The White House Correspondents' Association has raised objections to the plan, arguing that some news organizations, particularly smaller ones, would be heavily burdened by the cost.
News organizations regularly cover many of the costs associated with covering the White House, including fees for flying on Air Force One and temporary office space for when the president travels. But expenses related to health and safety have typically been covered by the White House.
36 DAYS AND COUNTING: WHEN WILL BIDEN HOLD FIRST SOLO PRESS CONFERENCE?
"Nobody asked us to pay a fee to put up the fence," one journalist told the outlet, referring to new security barriers around the building's complex. A member of the correspondents' association said the new cost would "means test for White House coverage."
The White House and the WHCA did not immediately respond to the Washington Examiner's request for comment on the matter.
Max Tani, a media reporter for the Daily Beast, tweeted in response to the news, "I think part of 'bringing truth and transparency back to the briefing room' is not making it prohibitively expensive for smaller outlets with tight budgets to go to the White House."
"I remember all of DC media getting up in arms when the Trump administration banned single reporters from the White House," Anders Hagstrom, White House correspondent for the Daily Caller, posted. "If this goes into effect, it would effectively ban multiple entire outlets."

Kaiser Health News reporter Rachana Pradhan tweeted, "I have a lot of questions here but first: What kind of COVID test is the White House using these days where it costs $170 a pop???"
White House officials have reportedly agreed to accept outside COVID-19 tests, but that still will present a significant cost to news outlets, and the details of what types of tests will be accepted remain unclear. Pool reporters, those assigned to travel with the president and share their findings with other reporters, will still be able to receive the tests free of charge.
