CORONA When Is A Mask Worth It?

i know there are many opinions and sometimes heated exchanges about masks, are they worht it, do they work, they are all fake, they dont protect us, we need to wer them to protect ourselves, and on and on the lines go. its like we are chasing out tail or something. i see the same phrases and opinions and no one is really talking just swapping hits.

for the record i dont like masks. i dont like to have to wear a mask to protect myself from infected people who dont wear masks because this virus is a monster. i dont like living in a word like this but i will wear a mask to protect myself because i believe this virus aint going away any time soon.

early on i started researching all the different masks and materials and testing. in the beginning of this we got mixed messages and that was because of 2 things--1) politics and 2) shortage. we were actully told they wont work for us dumb civilians but all masks needed to be turned over and saved for the medical professionals. remember that guilt trip fauci and others, even dfoctors laid on us? NO MASKS FOR YOU CITIZEN, ONLY FOR US IMPORTANT ONES. biggest freaking lie since Of course I'll respect you in the morning.

if masks didnt work then how come they were so desperate to get them for themselves? how come the medical staff infection rate isnt over the top? because a good mask worn and handled properly Will offer 80-90% protection from This particular virus. but it depends on the type of mask and its material and of course, how you handle it when you take it off.

it has been proven nations that made masks required early on dont have our problems, they didnt lock down. i HATE the lockdown because it was stupid. fauic conned trump, lied to him and caused all this terrible economic BS, thats my opinion.

here is a link to an excellent site that explains the types of masks, what they are used for, the type of protection it offers you from a virus, the strengths and weaknesses and even their professional directions for making your own decent mask to protect yourtself. early on some great folks here posted 2 threads - iirc--with all sorts of info and designs, very helpful.

this is a link to medical info site and has US and EU masks info with more links to study. this is just one of hundreds of site explaining how a mask works and the difference between them. it is very good, a one pagers and worth reading to ge a good understanding.

i bet just about everyone is getting sick and tired of all the mask crap. i am. but im more concerned aobut the opinions that masks dont work -dont bother -were all gonna get sick anyway-it violates my freedom. but if masks didnt work or were not important for protection then the medicla field would not be desperate to get them.

for the record, again, i have no problem if you dont want to wear a mask. i will wear a GOOD mask and use it properly to provide protection from you. i do Not believe in targeting or mask -shaming. if a store requires a mask, have the deceny to wear a mask or go somewhere else. if you are sick, coughing or sneezing stay the hell home or wear a mask to protect us from You.

protection comes in layers. good masks are like that. if you are in a car driving down the road and hit a tree----what is the possible protection options? you can be driving with no seat belt, or with just a seat belt only or with a seat bealt and air bags. what is the smartest protection?

from what i ve been studying these months, i honestly believe we will be facing round 2 and it is just smart to get what we need now while we can , including better masks, before that happen. for all we know the next form of coid-19 will turn half of us into asian murder hornet zombies.

here is link to medical info page:

im not wanting to get i n a pissing contest with people, i want to give info to maybe help clarify.

here is link to latest chris martinson video on virus update - he is excellent for comparing reports and data and explaining what the white coats are saying and doing and exposing less than reputable 'reports'. he really helps you understand the good, the bad and the scam. we have to learn to weed out the politics, the hysteria and the con artists and get down to the real facts and data to see what we are facing. and how to fight it successfully as possible because this damn thing is real, its not just old or fat people who die and the long term damage reports are just starting to come out. run time about 33.12

I'm a senior citizen so mostly I'm staying at home. When I go out I wear a mask. Personal choice. I wish others wore masks too, but many do not. Probably 50% of those that do, do not wear them properly. If you choose not to wear a mask that is your choice, but if you do choose not to wear a mask please be very careful with social distancing and stay home if you're sick. I think even if I weren't a senior I would still wear a mask in consideration for those that are vulnerable.

As to how well they work, I guess I'd say any protection is better than none.

Saved, to glorify God.
I am 75, with almost EVERY "underlying condition" they cite, so I don't think they would make much of an effort to save me since all they have to do is cite my age and "underlying conditions" to get a ho-hum, what else is new reaction to my death. So, I have put myself in quarantine, going out only once to get this back examined in early February and a second time to get a 90 day medication renewal at the drive through pharamacy at MADIGAN Army medical center.

If I should go out, I will wear an N-95 respirator, not a "mask". I really think that some of the severity of this disease is directly related to how much INFECTION DOSE you got, and is RELATED to how your immune system deals with it. Get too big a dose of COVID-19 VIRUS and your immune system cannot get on top of it. So, I know I HAVE TO CATCH COVID-19 EVENTUALLY. But I want to get as small an exposure to the virus as I can get so I can start building antiboldies for the NEXT EXPOSURE. SPACED., REPEATED, VERY, VERY, LIMITED EXPOSURES SEEM TO ME, the safest way to negotiate this rock strewn "passage" through the epidemic, because I don't think it will EVER be eradicated completely.

Great post, Jazzy!
*************************

Ainit, you said...

I really think that some of the severity of this disease is directly related to how much INFECTION DOSE you got, and is RELATED to how your immune system deals with it.

Exactly! That is one reason why I am choosing to wear a mask.

Some studies have measured the velocity of a sneeze, cough or just speaking, and how far those potentially virus-containing droplets can travel. If someone is coughing, sneezing or talking, wearing a mask serves to cut down the velocity and keep most/all of those droplets within their mask, protecting me to some extent. Fewer inoculum for me. If I am coughing, sneezing or talking, others will be similarly protected.

In this pandemic when there are lots of asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic people, I wear a mask to protect you. You wear a mask to protect me. And it doesn’t matter how old or medically-compromised either of us is.

This should be a guideline for everyone in your category. You have a correct understanding and a manageable solution to the problem facing this demographic.

If someone feels odd wearing a mask at a store, they should just check out their local stores and find the demographic that wears masks.

I was shopping at a local Piggly wiggly because of low traffic, nice customer base and low virus exposure due to socio-economic issues of that demographic. Anyway, now the staff and most of the customers and all of the vendors don't wear masks. So now I've shifted tactics and instead of a red state frame of mind store I'm shopping in a blue state store.

Which frame of mind is better? If blue state is wrong nothing happens. If red state is wrong you might just end up dead.

If you are medically at-risk your only solution is to remain at home and self-quarantine. If you don't, any infection you get - covid19 or otherwise - is on you. Everyone is responsible for their personal health, no one else should be expected to build their wall for them.

The stats for masks from laboratory research is not replicable "in the wild." And most of those stats are for single use masks, not using the same mask multiple times. I would say greater than 75 percent of people do not wear their masks properly, have them properly fitted, put them on and remove them properly, etc. My understanding from several former colleagues working on research papers is that most people are getting infected in the home from cross contamination issues.

Like with any situation, individuals will need to assess their own personal risk and modify their own behavior from there.

Kathy, I think you posted the original text (which I loved so much I kept a copy) and I added the photo for psychological impact, hoping people I forwarded the message to would think about it rather than just blow it off...

  • If you want to stay home, stay home.
  • If you want to wear a mask, wear a mask.
  • If you want to avoid large crowds, avoid large crowds.
  • I am not required to descend into poverty for you.
  • I am not required to abstain from human contact for you.
  • I am not required to shop alone, without my kids, for you.
  • I refuse to participate in "quarantine life" until there's an unsafe, untested vaccine released in eighteen months. I refuse to receive said vaccine to make others feel more safe.
  • I won't set myself--or my children--on fire to keep you warm.
  • If you're convinced the vaccine is safe and effective, you can get it yourself.
Some of you are allowing fear and policies devoid of scientifically accurate data to destroy America and ruin your life. I can't control your self-destructive behaviors, but we all have a say in America.
We need to tell legislators that we demand options. We have a constitutional right to take risks. Life is full of bacteria and viruses--many of which spread before symptoms manifest and after they subside.

We ALL have a right to receive OR refuse vaccines.
The data was inaccurate at best; purposely overblown to justify government overreach at worst.
Stop allowing the government to destroy:
  • The Food Supply
  • Small Businesses
  • Medical Autonomy
  • Access to Healthcare
  • Religious Gatherings
  • Privacy Rights
  • Fellowship
When the "new normal" is filled with starvation, depression, suicide, child abuse, domestic violence, imprisonment, governmental spying, and pure DESPERATION, the virus is going to look preferable to the world YOU helped facilitate.

The real issue is "what kind of mask?"

If you're talking about a cloth one or a paper surgical mask, they're worthless. There's no "well, virus particles "might" be caught by the mask fibers." That's just whistling past the graveyard. Now, if one wears an N95 (PROPERLY FITTED) or a PAPR (highly preferred), then at least they stand a chance.

Otherwise don't freakin bother.

I get that. However, the cloth or paper masks are the ticket to get in the door for (as one example) needed medical care. I don't kid myself about their effectiveness, but there are other considerations to deal with.

Have several three-layer cloth masks sewn by a retired nurse. Hot and uncomfortable for more than ten minutes at a stretch. I find myself pulling it aside to be able to breathe cool air. A grocery trip with it on is very aggravating. It seems the available paper masks are all made in China. Do I trust those?

Stay home if you are at significant risk. Please let the rest of us live our lives.

...because this damn thing is real, its not just old or fat people who die and the long term damage reports are just starting to come out.

It is mostly elderly people who are at risk, followed by people with underlying conditions, a major one being obesity. Not everyone who has died will fall into these categories, but most will. Our local news companies will run these stories of people in their 20s and 30s who've passed. The photos they show, plus the ones on various social media, show that all the younger people whose stories I've read were likely obese. A small percentage might have been on the borderline between overweight and obese. That's just how the data in our state has played out. I really wish the states would put out more data outside of age, and maybe race. What about weight, diabetes , respiratory ailments like asthma, COPD, etc.. Hopefully that data is being forwarded to those researching the virus.

As far as mask are concerned, Peak Prosperity mentioned this company in LA for their mask research. Worth the read:

Why I won't wear a mask outside of the hospital-
Reduces oxygen which effects immune system.
You are exhaling moist air into a closed space. This is a good medium for growth and what is trapped gets more concentrated as you exhale. And then you inhale back into your lungs.
No thanks.

I have n95s , stays in my pocket in case where I want to shop requires one. So far no one except Costco requires it. I’m courteous in general anyways, I’ll respect your “space” but don’t expect me to turn around....cross the street......feel guilty....ect.

Living On A Prayer
I only wear the stupid thing when I go into the grocery store. 30 minutes maximum. I know it isn't doing anything except preventing me from getting a ration of crap from somebody I'm not really willing to go to jail over.

Otherwise, I don't really go anywhere which I can't go through the drive thru, like my pharmacy.

I guess I'm a grumpy pacifist until....well, until I'm not.

I have both P-100's, W/valve and n-95 respirator type masks. I use neither, for the reasons Aznurse discusses.
Hate them. If this were ebola, I would use a space suit! But it's not.

That’s fine, but the thread title asks “When is a mask worth it?” not “When is a mask NECESSARY?”

On TB every waking moment
Took mom (93) to her doctor last week, first time I have worn a mask outside since all this kicked off. Just a procedure mask, earloop type. Everyone wore one, put on in the car at the clinic, and off again when we got back to the car.

IMO if it's that big a deal you need a bunny suit and a PAPR full time. YMMV of course. It's a VIRUS after all. And an encapsulated RNA retrovirus at that. Do what makes you feel better but let everyone else do the same. Karen Nation is not where I want to live.

Howdy, Folks!

Seems folks have been up in arms recently over tracking issues:

Folks, there are surveillance cameras EVERYWHERE in the USA. Your face is being used as a weapon against you in what was up to this point your losing battle to maintain your personal privacy and ability to move about unfettered.

Personally, I find the conditioning of The Sheeple to accept seeing masks on folks to be a relief.

If one had worn this headgear into a bank a year ago, someone would have called the cops. Now if you are *not* wearing something over your face, bank tellers get uppity and go full Karen on you.

COVID is in some ways a blessing...

i used the word 'mask' in a general sense, the link to the page discusses the different types and materials , respirators and their types to help people understand the difference and when and why one is preferred over the other. please read the mask differences, it is important. and will help clarify things.

not trying to pick a fight or pee on anyones cornflakes. i think some people dont understand the difference and there can be some wrong assumptions and having invalid info. i dont want to fight over your 'right' to not wear a mask,. i care more about learning the best ways to protect ourselves from infected people who refuse to wear a mask.

from everything ive been reading on multiple sources, yes, the amount of exposure and initial viral load one gets determines how sick one ends up More or Less, depending on some other factors. mask or no mask plus physical distance from an infected person does matter a good deal.
mask type, material, distance and contact, initial viral load contact, any repeated viral contacts, there are factors involved. i also am doing all i can so that IF i eventually get this thing it is a low load and i can beat it off with the anti virals and supplements im taking.

wearing a mask in public does not make me a sheep

ive studied this virus upside and down numerous sources in different countries experiences and know it can kill me, it is ignorant to ignore that.

wearing a GOOD mask in public is proactive

knowing how to take it off safely, put it in a bag to sterilize and safely reuse is smart

wearing a mask in public doesnt actually cut off oxygen supply, its inconvenient and maybe PIA but it wont actually damage the immune system for the time frame being used. ive heard that passed around also and tried to track it down. it stems from the idea we all need germs for a healthy immune system and wearing masks protect us from germs so masks are bad for us we need to let everyone catch this thing. sbut no one really needs masks except for medical staff who do not need to catch this thing. see what they are doing? word games. i cant find any studies that prove wearing masks damages the immune system. thats a gross exaggeration being used on us.

ever talk with a medical person who caught this virus? they say DONT GET THIS DAMN VIRUS

the premise is also connected and advanced by those who originally believed we need to reach 'herd immunity'. that turned out to be misinfo. how dare i say that? because they all know theres no herd immunity for any of the flu viruses, or for SARS, MERS, HIV which are components in THIS virus. if there is no such thing as 'herd immunity' for those why do they assume there will be for this? more word games.

and think about this-----trump said if / when it comes back this fall he will NOT do another shut down.

i personally think that is great. but what does that mean if we start to get huge spikes around the nation in infection and hospitalizations this fall because people were so happy to have the damn lock down end and some sembelence of normalcy they threw caution to the wind.

the only way to slow the rate of infection is

everybody wears a mask

if on average 25% of infected people have no symptoms for about 2 weeks and are spreading the virus how do we protect ourselves and slow down the rate of transmission? id never trust any rushed to production vaccine.

i believe trump will not do a lock down but i can see hims strongly requesting all americnas wear masks for say 30 days or so to slow the spread so it doesnt explode. if it comes back as expected, he will have to do something. masks are the less invasive.

i suspect that is where we are heading this fall /winter. that is why i posted this to help people understand the different TYPES and what are the better ones that can actually protect them. im seeing more masks come online on amazon and such, id say now is a good time to get some GOOD masks and have them on hand. do it while you can.

a dpoctor friend told me have 3 masks. one ready to wear, one in a zip lock bag as back up and one being sterilized and LEARN how to remove it safely, put it in a zip lock baggie to be sterilized later.(lowest heat in oven 30 min or in zip lock bag in full sunlight 6 hrs)

Please take 15 minutes to learn the different types, particulate size protection, virus size, what the best kind to get is. its not as boring as it sounds and yes! theres lots of pretty pictures! id bet this fall there will be another rush to buy and worse shortages.

Advising seniors and others at risk to stay home is fine and we should. However, I have to eat which requires going to grocery stores. Since the first of March I have shopped twice. As I said before, I wish everyone would wear a mask to protect those who are vulnerable. Is your right to not wear a mask more important than protecting others? I agree masks are uncomfortable and irritating but getting the virus could be a death sentence. I made my own masks from a pattern on the hospital web site and made additional masks to donate to the hospital. They are two layers of fabric with a pocket to insert a filter. I'm using the paper surgical masks as the filter. How much to they protect I don't know, but I do know something has to be better than nothing.

The Mountain

Here since the beginning
_______________
Scott McKay at American Spectator explains why the mask is essentially useless:

"Those of us who refuse to live our lives in fear, or to bow to those who do, have a message for the rest of you — the time has come and gone for us to continue with this idiotic charade of wearing masks in public."

"The mask is not an adequate defense against the COVID-19 virus, gang. The virus checks in at somewhere between 0.06 and 0.14 microns, meaning it’s too small for any commercially available mask to effectively filter it out. The pores on an N95 mask, which are the best masks you’re reasonably going to find, and the vast, vast majority of you are not going to have N95 masks but rather cloth masks, which perform far less well, are 0.3 microns."

"Meaning that while the N95 mask you wish you had but don’t, and that you shouldn’t have because doctors and nurses who have to treat coronavirus patients daily in hospitals need a steady supply of them, might trap the virus most of the time, that crappy cloth mask you’re wearing is more or less worthless. All it’s doing is signaling to people that you think you care more about the virus than they do."

"But if you really want to wear that mask, OK. Go ahead and wear it. It’s time to stop giving the stink-eye, or worse, a piece of your Karen mind, to people who aren’t impressed with your Mask Virtue and are breathing normally."

"If your mask works, then it will keep you from getting the virus regardless of whether other people are wearing a mask. So you shouldn’t care whether other people are wearing a mask."

"If your mask doesn’t work, then it won’t keep you from getting the virus regardless of whether other people are wearing a mask. So you shouldn’t care whether other people are wearing a mask."

"This idea that your mask works only in tandem with everybody else’s mask is a communistic idea straight out of the Borg hive mind, and shame on you for being such a drone that you buy into that. That was never a realistic notion, and it’s evidence of how easy it is for someone to rob you of your love of freedom.

It’s so bad that the roads are covered with morons driving alone with masks on."

"The only way to explain that idiocy is that those people have been convinced the mask is essentially an amulet that magically protects against contracting the virus. Here’s a quick reality check: magic amulets don’t work."

"But if you really want to wear a mask, again, fine. Go ahead and wear one."

Do not mistreat your fellow citizens because they don’t want to. That makes you both obnoxious and stupid.

"And no, you are not allowed to counter with “but it’s what the politicians and public health bureaucrats recommend.” Those people have not been right about a single damn thing having to do with this virus. Nothing. They have wrecked the national economy, they’ve lied and mixed messages, and in many cases they’ve actually killed people with coronavirus. For you to bleat out that appeal to authority means you don’t have an opinion other than the one somebody forced down your throat."

"Which is fine (not really), right up to the point when you try to inflict that opinion on the rest of us. Hush."

Good grief. Enough with the preaching and condescension. We have all heard it ALL over the past couple months..to distraction.

For 35 years I wore appropriate and effective PPE for very good reasons...got that T-shirt. I expect there are plenty of people here who can say the same. Had the fit-tests, Doc check-offs, mandatory every 6 month training PLUS extra training every time we started a new project...depending on what was specifically required. PPE was the first "getting our ducks in a row" meeting we had to have every time. I routinely worked with infectious diseases and biohazards, toxic chemicals, nerve agents, carcinogens, and other ugliness, plus did sterile lab/culture work and surgery/assisting surgeries.

As I said...you do what is right for YOU.
Thanks, but I know plenty enough to do what is right on my end.

Regular, flimsy masks to me are just a panacea to placate others and keep sneeze sputum from coming in and going out. I wear one to put others at ease if in a store but take it off outside and in between. My one (1) N95 is only for emergency use should I'm needed to enter a COVID space, which I doubt, but you never know.

Most definitely we'll be wearing our masks when we fly to Wash. State on the 8th. (Along with plenty of sani-wipes.) I don't want one, single, "look" or delay before loading and afterward, I'll be praying I don't get a call from some kind of a "Tracer!"

I don't have the time or energy to argue with people. I have both a cloth and an N-95 mask in my car. If the cloth one will save an argument (renders me invisible), I can wear one for a few minutes. Otherwise, I've been trying to avoid the stores right now. People are on extremely short fuses.
