going shooting tomorrow to work off some of the rust of my shooting skills. Been awhile and I am not comfortable with that. What's on your plate?

After a couple of days of rain, the weeds are getting pretty healthy in the garden, so there is a lot of weeding to be done this weekend. DH is going to put gutters on the the mini-barn and hook up my new rainbarrel.

Does too have a life!
We've got 2 cords of wood coming this morning with 3 more coming at the end of the week. Guess what we'll be doing? :hlp:

Wally World run this morning. Probably buy some ammo, which is nromal for me. Not much of a prepping activity in and of itself, but anything gained is better than nothing.

My weekend prep project is organizing papers and filing! I can't find a darn thing amidst some of my stacks of papers, so it's time to file and toss. Then it's off to the kitchen drawers. Ya know, I gave my dh one, I repeat ONE, kitchen drawer to use as a "junk" drawer, and somehow he took that to mean "every" one. So, that should occupy a good chunk of my time.

I went out to look at workshops today and right next door to the sheds was a little indoor flea market. I bought this little cabinet thingy. I'm not sure what to call it... maybe a baker's cabinet? It's not very deep though, certainly not big enough to hold a pie horizontally. What would you folks call this type of cabinet? I also so bought some cobalt blue drinking glasses.

I did find a used 12' x 20' workshop/shed that I liked very much. Still working details on that one.

Dh is painting the barn today, we picked up a mid sized paint sprayer at a garage sale. Not the best of them but its working, well we should get about half of it done. We got the deck painted Thursday. We have windows to trim in yet we took out the 2 big picture windows, one in the dining room and one in the living room and put in windows that can be opened to help let air into the house So nice. Wow great buy on that shed.

Thanks! I got a 10% discount on the shed, but it still has the lifetime warranty. Cool beans.

I already have an air conditioner for it and will need some help putting in window framing, insulation, sheetrock, etc. I really do NOT have those kinds of skills!

Kind of an experiment for us, we're putting in a second potato crop. If it works we hope to be able to keep potatoes through the winter and hopefully then some.

Picking pears, and gathering what's left from the garden.

Will start canning pears when they soften a bit.

Sorting and organizing my medical supplies...I go through a lot with 3 kids and pets! I'm about out of my "fish meds"...time to order more, and re-fill extra prescriptions. (My doc is great about writing refills on our Rx's.)

I've been rebuilding my preps from scratch since the hurrricane. Right when I think I'm soooooo close to feeling somewhat comfortable a new twist comes along. This time is a wonderful suprise. I will have my first grandbaby in November. It's a boy. Of course I knew about diapers, pins, diaper covers, cornstarch and all that but................I forgot about food and formula for a baby that will not be breastfed. I breastfed all of mine so this is all new to me. I did a little research to find out what they eat, when they eat it and how much the baby would require. I even found some excellent menu plans for infants and toddlers. I WENT BABY FOOD SHOPPING. LOL While at Wal Mart a woman who appeared to be the dept. manager was telling a stocker to be sure and put all of the older stock to the front and as soon as the shelf is empty then change the shelf tags and stock the new jars of baby food. He asked why and she said because the new pricing is almost double of the existing price. Armed with this information I quickly checked all of the expiration dates and wiped out the existing shelves so that my grandson will have plenty of food and cereals until he is old enough to eat table food. Yes, I have a garden and orchard but in the event that I lose them to another cane, drought, disease or floods I'll still have a back-up resource to feed the baby.

Been busy clearing a defensible space around our house due to the wild land fires near us. Dear hubby cut down overhanging oak branches. The he had a medical emergency (a torn retina/partial detachment), so off to the ER and emergency lazer eye surgery. Very thankful for insurance and an opthamologist who worked on it this early a.m. Now it is recovery time.

Saved, to glorify God.
What was I thinking??? Just bought a couple of Yamaha 49cc motor scooters (w/350miles on em) at a garage sale.

( I keep forgetting to look in the mirror) :ld: Oh well, ya gotta go sometime. :shkr: Hmm. fat old lady on scooter? :eleph: :lkick: Well, at least I can now get to local grocery, bank and post office regardless of where gas ends up. Somebody stop me if I mention wanting to buy rappelling or scuba gear. :D

I used one of these grinders when my kids were babies to make baby food and it worked great. http://www.amazon.com/Baby-Food-Mill-1-unit/dp/B00016X0GY Usually I would just use whatever we were having for dinner and run it through the grinder. I like to give them now as baby gifts and have one in my preps for the grandbabies. They are not expensive and you can find them in the baby dept. at Walmart, Meijer, Target, etc.

Thanks Terri. I did pick one up. The baby food is to supplement fresh if it's not available due to some unforseen incident. As for feeding infant from the table....................I'm cajun therefore there are alot of seasonings and spices used in our everyday foods that doesn't sit well with a babies delicate stomach.

The baby food grinders are so cool. I cook my own food, therefore I can use as little bit of spices, as needed. Way cheaper and better than those baby food jars.
As far as preps this weekend. Not much. I needed to take a breather.
But there is tomorrow.

I added a HHO generator to my minivan that is supposed to boost gas mileage by 20-50%. I should know within a week or two if it's having any effect.

I also planted a second planting of potatoes along with some carrots, beets and corn. I think I'll plant some peas as well.

I've still got some weeding to do this afternoon.

Putting up HF and VHF/UHF antennas at the new place this weekend. The 6-BTV HF vertical is almost up, and the Diamond X-50 dual band vertical will be going up after that.

We, my husband is working on a camp trailer. I am secretly calling it the bugout trailer. Why? Because it will be completely packed with everything we would need (except guns/ammo/generator-all easily accessible off the trailer) in case we should have to leave this hilltop. We camp LOTS and I am a firm believer in being comfy when we camp in our tents, so... It is also supposed to be lightweight enough to be pulled by the minivan in case the Dodge is not available or is having to haul the horse trailer.

We had a teachable moment this weekend. My mil took the grandsons she is raising to Vogel for a week longcamp out, so Friday, we went up to help her set up and hang out with her. My dh swore we were coming home around 3.:siren: We wound up not doing that, and having to stay in a hotel in town because there was not enough room in her tents, nor blankets, etc. Food/drinks/chairs/towels and bathing suits and bath stuffwe had. He wound up having to buy new t-shirts for everyone cuz the ones we had on were STINKY and we were NOT going to hang out with family being odiferous.:shkr: I told him that for cases just like this(avoiding any mention of bugging out/SHTF) we needed to keep a small go bag for us with clothes and basic camp gear so we could just go when the mood hits us....He agrees. YEAHHH!!!!

One small step for Ginger's family towards preparedness. At home, he is all for it, but he HATES to take stuff with him that does not involve beer coolers and chairs and fishing rods. He gets this look on his face when I mention bugging out :stfu: andthat usually winds up in an arguement.... I HAFF MY VAYS TO MAKE HIM PREP :lkick:

Rebuilding Coleman lanterns with dried out washers. The heat here doesn't help any when a lantern is 20 years old. Can't pressurize them when the seals are dried out so rebuilding them is the only route short of just tossing them and buying new. Mucho cheaper, too.

The one I just finished is about 40 years old, and other than the seal is fully functional. Now repaired and it should deliver many years of additional service.

The pump kits Wal-Fart sells will fit any Coleman appliance save the Peak 1 stove. It comes with the newer plastic cap fitted but also contains a metal cap for older style lanterns and stoves. Just takes a pliers and a bit of muscle to refit them.

Rebuilding the $75 woodstove from the shop. It's a Taiwan knock off of the Jotul 118. Even says "Taiwan" on the back side. Not as nicely made as a Jotul product, but fundamentally sound.

The stove was bought by me last winter with a fresh coat of paint, which immediately burned off since it obviously wasn't high temperature paint. I think this was called "anything to get the sale." It must have broken his heart to pay $5 for a quart of cheap black paint. Underneath I can tell the stove spent some time outside since the joints are rusted and some of the bolts were nearly rusted through.

There are 19 pieces to the stove. Each was wire brushed using a grinder to remove the paint and get back down to the bare metal. Then a coat of black stove paint and drilling out and retapping all the bolt holes that hold it together.

The component pieces all seem sound and so far I've been lucky enough to successfully tap out all the bolt connections: I won't have to use any through bolts in lieu of a buggered up thread.

Winter's not far off.

Best,
Joe

Let's see--DH took chain saw apart and cleaned and serviced it. Two portable generators(one for son and one for MIL) serviced and run, big generator(ours) serviced and run, disked and bed-shaped last four grape vine rows, about half of vineyard posts installed (wire and planting to be done this week), sunnhemp green manure cut in veg garden so it can begin to compost, beehives checked and sugar-dusted, weeded around pineapples. Always too much to do in the alloted daylite hours but it is all a blessing.

i used my new bullet mold to cast up some .312 155gr bullets for loading into my garand and then went to the range and tested them out. at 500 yards they were hitting all around the 10" steel plate and i'm confident that, after i work up a load, i'll be hitting it consistently with them.

Hubby and I harvested about half of our broccoli plants. I blanched the spears and we put them through the food saver to take out the air and they are now in the freezer. I think we put up about fifteen gallon bags of them. I also bought a second backup food saver machine and extra bags. No telling if we'll ever be able to get them in the future and I really like freezing a lot of my vegetables that I don't can or dehydrate.

I collect old farm implements and proudly display them on my property. I was able to buy quite a few more pieces cheap at a local garage sale. There may come a time when we'll have to dust off those antiques and make them servicable again and I'll be ready. :) In the meantime they are a good conversation piece. I also use them to teach the young people how farming used to be in the olden days. :)

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoon for a few hours, we (me, husband, Mom & Dad) helped my brother put up stud walls for his new shop. He is going into business for himself. For about 20 yrs. he has been a finished cabinet maker. He is now going into a business that unfortunately will likely have business no matter what the economy does. He is going to start building affordable caskets. I plan to help him market them. Already interest has been generated in our town. People are fed up with the high costs associated with a funeral. People can't afford to die. So.....something he is good at building that will economically help a lot of people. And....it was hot and we are tired!

That is actually a good idea. My dh and I both would rather go in a plain pine box lined with flannel than those fancy metal and satin things. Let me know when you get the shop set up and we may just see about a pre-purchase. talk about a prep item.:lkick: We are just 38 and 40, so God willing, it will be a while before we need them. In his line of work though, it can get scary.
