…… What is a safe e-mail?

I've had yahoo e-mail for years. But I'm really fed up with everything being connected...sign in with Google, sign in with yahoo, sign in with Amazon. They're all connected; it's confusing and feels very insecure.

The sad truth is, I stupidly e-mailed someone on FB marketplace today. No doubt a scam. So I tried to change my e-mail password, but now I'm locked out; I couldn't use the 2-part authentication because one is dh's e-mail that's linked to mine so of course I can't get in, and I can't get texts because something is wrong with my phone (going in tomorrow morning for that...spent the evening taking everything off my phone because I think they're going to reset it.)

I want to get new, simple, safe, not-connected-to-everything-else e-mails. I have to leave our business one as Yahoo because it's printed on everything, but it won't be linked to the others anymore. I want to change all my passwords for everything and try to figure out how to not have it all linked to Google or Yahoo. Is that even possible?

I'm so ADHD I'm always confused...LOL! I'm finding that it's worth the time (and money when necessary) to make things very simple.I'm getting too old for this nonsense!

Just keep in mind that protonmail is suspected to be run by the cia.

Owner has Gmail.

And I used his account and opened it up to include me under my own name.

You're allowed up to seven addresses - each with their own Password.

There has never been a problem - I think because of "safety in numbers." Almost EVERYONE has Gmail - not to say they don't have something else as a fall-back.

Thinking on this - I believe Owner keeps his own "Google" account - which would be access should any or all of the Gmail passwords/accounts should be hacked - a back-up.

But how do I ask Owner to access/disable/whatever my Gmail account? He barely reads my Emails (or won't admit to it) now.

Everything is suspected to be run by the CIA.

That is counter-intel-pro 101.

I recommend ProtonMail. Highly.

I'll try to add some details why a bit later.

Some of the reasons I like ProtonMail:

- Offers End-to-End Encryption, which prevents ProtonMail from seeing your email, or anyone thru transit.
- Allows PGP Encryption
- Client side holds the encryption keys to account, so account data is not visible to Protonmail
- Swiss company, that has some pretty strict privacy laws.

Thaks everyone.

Ok, so it's for sure Proton mail. Or maybe not? LOL! After I get my phone taken care of I'll see if there is any more info here, then make a decision.

I happily use technology *all* the time. Until it fails me; then I whine. :)

FYI, Protonmail does have a free service.
I use the paid service, to me it is worth it. But you can try it out for free first (or "forever").

And you believe all of this, with what proof?

There is no such thing as safe email anymore. Everything electronic is surveilled no matter what the email provider, search engine, internet provider, vpn provider and cell provider claim. About the closest thing to secure long distance communication would be the U.S. Mail and if they really wanted to surveil you they would be intercepting that.

And, you believe all Protonmail services are open source, with what proof?
Prove that they're not...or just go back to using aol.com or you email of choice. I'll currently take the word of a mountain of privacy and cybersecurity experts over some internet user

OP asked for a "safe" email provider, safe is a relative term, so trying to get them to swallow your blackpill "rheeeeee nothing is secure" is less than helpful.

For the average user switching to something like protonmail, using a VPN and/or DNS over TLS is a huge step in taking just a small portion of privacy back from google, snooping ISPs etc.

Nobody in this post claimed it would keep the alphabet bois away, it's simply a BETTER option than gmail or the like.

Safe is either safe, or it is not safe. It is an exact term. It is not a relative term.

Ok, I'll try Proton.

Safer is better of course, but my actual main goal is simplicity. I want *just* e-mail. I want to get away (as much as possible...which isn't much, I know...LOL!) from everything being linked together with Google and Yahoo and Amazon and......

I don't use e-mail for anything controversial anyway; if they're tracking, I think they'll be bored! (Though it's linked to all my financial stuff.) What triggered this all is dh being concerned that I (inadvertently!) e-mailed a FB marketplace scammer, and when I googled, of course I saw all the horrible things that can happen. Well, loads of strangers have our e-mails and phone numbers and no problems yet. But I went ahead & changed my password anyway, which I HATE to do, and that started a chain of annoying stuff. "Do you want to sign in with Yahoo or Google?" IDK! Then neither works, anyway...blah! Now that my phone works again (sim card issues) I'm finally back in.

Whining over, rant off, thanks for the advice!!

If all they have is your email address, you should not need to change your email password.

That said, proton is a good service. Just don't plan to backup or bulk copy proton emails. My understanding is they are stored individually and can only be copied one at a time.

I guess it's the same thing as Googling health symptoms...then you're up all night worried about cancer or sudden death! :) Dh has Aspergers (and a few other things) which comes with a fair dose of anxiety. I'm a lot more la-de-da. Sometimes he balances me out & brings me back to reality; sometimes, like last night, he sends me on rabbit trails....

I'm determined that if I do get a new e-mail, *THIS TIME* I'll keep it organized and cleared out one at a time as they come in.

Yeah, right.

Id look into yandex mail before any of the others, privacy wise.

Its russian based so take it for what you will. (cant vouch for the service yet but I might look into it)

At this point, multiple email services wouldnt be a bad idea.

Spectrum has their own email. It apears that they hire 3rd party contractors to do work for them and then give those contractors a list of customer emails. The 3rd party then proceeds to either use those emails for spamming purposes or else they sell the list to someone else who will.
