CORONA What are you concerned about running short of?

Freeholder

This too shall pass.
For "stored food" winter salads, I keep jars of kraut to make a slaw-type salad, (recipes on the web) and also don't forget about 3 bean salad, cowboy caviar, and pasta salads. I've been known to use frozen veg like broccoli, peas and carrots liberally in pasta salad. Fills the fresh salad void to some degree.

A large planter - half-barrel size, or bigger if you can find a container - or several smaller ones in a sunny window can give you small amounts of cut-and-come-again salad greens all winter. Just make sure your cat can’t get into it and use it for a litter box!

water. I have no source to get more without a faucet.
You should stock up while you can. Use empty juice jugs, gatorade jugs, 2 lt pop jugs, empty liq bottles/jugs, etc. Do not use milk jugs. They break down & leak. While you still are getting water from your faucet, stock up!

polite civilization
this and electricity. With both this is partly an adventure. Without either it is unfun survival. SUre I can grow a lot of food, heat with wood etc etc but without security of a polite civilization you aren't doing much other than watching/ protecting what you have.

How shallow does that sound? Hubs has already offered his bowl on the head haircut! mmmm NOT YET
Doesn't sound shallow to me! I don't color but have short hair that starts looking really shaggy if I'm even a few days late with getting it trimmed monthly. I'm going to have to start wearing headbands pretty soon to keep my hair from covering my eyes. My DH made a similar offer to me, since he shaves his own hair close to the scalp with electric hair clippers. Keeping a neat appearance is part of having a positive mental attitude while we are stuck at home.

Civility: Have already watched a few of the less resilient begin to fray.

Safety: I expect to see my first live mugging or cart hijack before this is over.

I'm sure most of us have seen the stories now about the great toilet paper shortages, bread is getting hard to find, flour & yeast are running low in many stores.

If this goes on for two months? six months? A year?! What do you see yourself running low/out of?

My biggest concern is Mom's meds, and for the rest of the family behind that (we're all on anti-depressants, and I'm on a blood pressure med).
After 1 month.... pleasure items
After 2 months... the good stuff to eat
After 6 months.... anything to eat as we only have 6 months food.... Though if it is 6 months from now, I may still have good stuff to eat from the garden, etc that I canned.

learn to make your own

many yrs ago the price of whiskey (my fav) went to over $50/btl

I spent $200 and bot a still

yeast sugar and water

that's all

vodka for about $6 per 40oz, depending on price of sugar

what kind of still did you get?
I looked around a bit on Amazon and there were many different kinds
do you know of a comprehensive book on the matter?

Personally, I’d love to have a still. But the tap water doesn’t run cold enough here most of the year, so the chiller section wouldn’t work well.

Had friends who made a little one and ran the condenser on tap water in southern Texas.

Worked fine.

just a pot still..

no fancy add-ons

I don't know any books

all I do is put 20lbs sugar in 5gal warm water (to dissolve the sugar faster)

stir till dissolved

add 1 pkg turbo yeast from brewhaus.com

then stir and cover with a lid with a burper/bubbler

there are many places online to get turbo yeast

lotsa places say "make 20% alcohol in 24 hrs"

I haven't seen this happen and I been making shine for over 20 yrs

I then set the container in a warm room for 18 days

or until the bubbler stops bubbling

(but I still give a cpl days after it stops)

I then run it thru the still

I don't have running water so I use l;arge plastic garbage can (clean)

and put my pump in there to circulate thru the still

after the brew gets up to heat I let it drip into a container

the first 1 cup I used to dispose of, but now I keep it for cleaning or camp fuel

I don't know the terminology for ethanol or methanol

the first cup outta the still is the one you don't wanna drink

I have consistant 160 proof rite outta the nozzle

only a fool would drink that

I cut it with water(50% alcohol by volume) and filter thru carbon and into bottles for consumption

I drank whiskey for decades and I just drink this like rye and coke

my bud drank vodka and orange so he uses shine instead of vodka

my wife made all them fruity women's drinks with this stuff

today I just finished a batch and yesterday was another

I got 6x 40oz for a cost of about $6-8 a 40 oz btl (per batch)

sometimes I only get 5 cuz I am in a hurry

there are discussion boards online with conissours telling you about heads and tails and middles

I don't separate anything except the first cup

this shyt made me the man I am today

fat and bald and I walk funny:spns::shr:

many stills are too fancy and cost a shytload

my still looks a lot like this one except mine is copper 304 Stainless Steel Home Brew Alcohol Wine Distiller Moonshine Still Brandy Wine Spirit Distiller Kitchen,Dining & Bar from Home and Garden on banggood.com

i stop taking shine when the temp gets to 200f because after that all that will come out will be water/steam

water boils at 212f

me not having running water I collect rain or snow

my bud freezes bread pans with water to add to his chiller

I tried 2 ltr pop btls frozen but it didn't work cuz the btl didn't disperse the frozen into the water

just floated on top. didn't chill worth a damn

summer I use the water from industrial containers under the downspout

mornings its cool enuf and they are not in direct sun but texas would be a prob to get chilled enuf
