So I did a thing today...a stupid thing. I fell and hit my head on the lights on a flat bed trailor in the barn. Blood thinner means lots of bleeding and a CT of head. Good news is no brain bleed and maybe no brain! A few stitches and an ice pack. But I took the afternoon off. Hubby insisted. Think he felt bad because he was on tractor and I had trouble catching his attention! Love reading about what all you guys have done today.

I was born and raised in the Ark Valley in Colo. After my sister and I both were married we ended up in Western Kansas. We would get together and go to the valley and pick and bring back at least 10 bushels each of tomatoes of tomatoes to can among other things. We knew enough growers that we got them for practically nothing. we thought nothing of putting up that many tomatoes and were glad to have them.

I keep trying to read the book "patriots" and I have several of the subsequent books in the series. I think my problem is I just don't want to live the story in the book what with all the crap going on in the world.

We got the ac repaired, its an old unit and is on its last leg. The technician did something called a quick start and it fired right up. We are looking at a new unit in the next year or so, we'll have to dig deep to pay for it. Fortunately the temps outside are only in the high 80's to 90, so the house did not get really warm, with the three window units we have in added on rooms. Just have to leave it all in God's hands when the time comes to need a new one.

Still trying to get dried goods in jars, I have more than I realized. Fortunately I have a good supply of jars, mylar and 02's if needed. And I need to do something with the 6 ten pound bags of sugar that has hardened in the paper packages. A little at a time gets things done.

DH is covering all the garden beds with hay for the winter.

I’m asking for traveling prayers as I head up for a college friend reunion. There are eight of us. Four of us taking a train. Two driving. One flying. All meeting at one of our friend’s house for a long weekend together.
It should be a grand time as long as we can keep politics out of it (which we usually do) as 6 of the 8 are very far left liberals.
That being said, I value our 30+ year friendship.

I’ll check in as I’m able and will be back Sunday night.

Also praying for you, do be careful. DH takes a blood thinner, I always tell him to be careful and he always says he is careful.

Judy, I hear you on reading matter right now.
Jonathon Cahn’s new book came out, and I’d heard Michael Lake mention it, so I got it on Kindle.
Had to keep popping in over here for a break, it was intense.

I think Carl Gallups wrote a similar book, as did the Gilberts, and Michael Lake has also discussed it. The difference is that Jonathon Cahn is sold in Walmart—-the distribution will be widespread, as it should be.

ETA: even if you don’t care for Jonathan Cahn, I think he’s spot on with this on, and it’s worth reading.

Got my bacon canned. That's something at least. It's ends and pieces, so it's just for adding to food, not really for frying up for breakfast. I raw pack in 8oz jars. Since I learned to do this 15 or so years ago, it has been super handy. One pack of GV ends n pieces fills 8 4oz jars, which is a full canner for me. I hope to do another batch soon.

I need to learn to can up hotdogs and smoked sausages. One time I was talking to one of the show hosts on the radio station that Cope Reynolds and Natty Bumpo had their shows on, and she encouraged canning any meat, even the lower quality stuff like balogna, hotdogs, and any ground meat because we will need it. So, I canned some cheap Jenny O turkey dogs. I tried to get 6 hotdogs in each jar. I made the mistake of covering them with boiled water. They absorbed the water, swelled up, and made quite a mess in the canner when they popped the lids off of the jars and exploded. So, gotta learn more.

Went shopping after my doctor's appointment yesterday. AND I hurt my knee again!!

I was out of the truck and trying to reach over to the passenger side and pressed my bad knee against the edge of the truck. If you recall, that knee has the tendons ripped loose and I have still been able to function by being really careful. The doc said that the two bones in my leg shift back and forth and over and under each other. This is NOT normal.....and it hurts. However, yesterday when I pressed against the door, it didn't really hurt UNTIL I tried to walk on it!!!!!! OH MY GOSH!!!!! TALK ABOUT AGONY!!!

I know I should go have it fixed, but I'm kinda busy right now......garden, canning, planting for Fall garden.......And, they are wanting to do a total knee replacement.

As far as shopping, I went to WALLET-WORLD (WALMART) for the first time in probably 2 years.
Filled a few holes in the pantry, including scoring big on more powdered peanut butter!!!! LOVE that stuff!!! I would inject it into my veins if it were possible!!! LOL!!!!

Also got a few canned goods, more flour and corn meal and some other things......the corn meal is IMPORTANT, because you can easily raise baby chicks on a steady diet of it and just add some crickets, worms and other bugs, and they do fine. I have raised 2 flocks this way.

Well, eating the last of the large cantaloupes this morning.....about 8" in circumference, or about the size of a small football.....but round. Have 4 more out there, but they are pretty small. I must say, I have truly enjoyed my cantaloupe crop this year.. ......it; it was AMAZING!!!

WELL, it's off to the garden....bum leg and all. I am taking my phone with me in case I really have "issues" with my leg, so just maybe say a little prayer for me that GOD will allow me to keep going til winter!!

Thanks for the video. It was an inspiration to me for branching out with canning more kinds of meat. The only meat I canned, so far, has been ground beef. I've wanted to can Polish sausages, ham chunks, and wieners, but I have been unsure and afraid to do it. I have lots of Polish sausages and wieners in my freezers. The added onions and peppers sound wonderful, too.

We just got back from picking up the Jeep. Now, does anyone have any good suggestions about how to keep mice from getting into the vehicles again? Cary has put mouse poison underneath the hoods of both, but I'm scared to death that some of it will fall out onto the ground, and our dog will get it. What else is there to do?

For those of you who can dry beans. Will a 1lb bag of cooked dry black-eyed peas fill a quart jar, or will it be too much for a quart? How many pints? I'm getting ready to can again in a couple of days, and I want to add dry peas to finish filling up my canner. I'd rather do the peas in pints. This will be my first attempt at canning dry beans/peas. My canning book says that I have to cook the peas first, and I know they will swell a bit as they cook.

You could try that mix of cornbread mix (we're using Jiffy) and baking soda, equal amounts of each. It's non-toxic, so that should be fine if your dog gets into it. I'd suggest putting it in a plate or something and shoving it under the car as far as you can. There are plenty of podcasts out there on how to do it. We've had mice nesting in the cabin air filters, makes a heck of a mess.

For inside the cars, we're finding ants are a problem here and there, and with the windows cracked a bit on hot days wasps. A few dryer sheets (unused) or the leftover dried up piece from Renuzit solid air freshners seem to repel them. I guess they don't like the fragrance.

It is BEAUTIFUL outside today!!!!

Just came in from the garden......no problems except for some significant pain.

Killed a bunch of tomatoes horn worms for the chickens. You know those things are HARD to kill?? You can squash the body, but if you don't squash the head, they don't die!!! They are such gross looking things!!! UCK!!!

Wellllllll.......it is LUNCH TIME AND I AM HUNGRY!!
LATER......

Hey all, great things you folks have accomplished.

Since we had to plant late (last week of June) because it never stopped raining long enough to plant in dirt instead of mud and only managed to get potato's (blues, reds and yellows) and onions (3 diff. kinds as well) in the ground we're hoping the weather stays at good temps for a couple more weeks. It was 40 deg. F. when I got up this morning.

Cherry trees had tons of blossoms but there aren't any cherries. Not many plums and same for apples. But we had a good year for fruit last yr. We did get a okay crop of Oregon grapes so those were turned into jelly. I stuck in the 3/4's of a cup of gooseberries that we managed to get.

The birds are eating the elderberries green :( so not getting much of those as they come ripe because they don't let them get ripe. They can eat them right those the bird netting.

Dried quite a bit of rhubarb in June.

I did get quite a bit of pork canned up and some of our x-rock chickens.

Ordered our seeds for next spring on Monday last, carrots, beets, spinach broccoli etc.. Bought extras as well.
We have seeds stored for our heritage beans we grow from them each yr.Aug21 001.jpg

Welp, I'm going to do a thing. Ordered more canning lids and decided to get a case of sauce bottles. I'm going to try canning hot sauce and ketchup in those. They're 16 oz, but taller and thinner, so heat penetration should not be an issue, and I've seen people canning in all sorts of used jars with lug lids, so it should be ok.

I think I posted this before. DH uses metal shavings from his machine shop in his truck and it keeps the mice out. If you don't know anyone with a machine shop then perhaps those stainless steel scrubbing pads would work. They are a little sharper than steel wool.

All dry beans swell up after they are cooked, depends on the beans.

I've had good success with instant potato flakes as well.

I haven't tried it yet, but I have been reading on Pinterest. Here is the link to the pin I saved:

But then you would bypass your tastebuds and miss out totally on the flavor.

Working on a plumbing problem, dh has it under control. But I got to clean the back of toilet really well.
We're starting the repair and remodel of the outside so I'm going to go ahead and get the estimate for the bathroom.
Except for a couple of pork butts I'm not shopping this week. Putting dry goods into glass containers and vacuum sealing some tomatoes for the freezer will be prepping for the week.
Pulling up what's left of the summer garden and planting more fall stuff. Working in the greenhouse to get ready for winter.
Have a good weekend!

Well, it looks like I am going to be moving......I am going to go live with my niece in Florida. I will still keep my RV and continue to live in it. I have made my going conditional on being able to bring 1 of my Great Pyrenees......my soul dog, BAILEY.....as well as DAN-DAN, my indoor dachshund. I MIGHT get to keep my or get new, chickens and definitely more rabbits. Niece's husband does not want chickens.....for SOME BIZARRE REASON!!

I have two people that want my goats.....which is gonna be hard for me too. Oaty Goaty is my Nigerian Dwarf doe that had her udder split....long story. But is about ready to pop out twins and BOTH udders have milk at this time!!!!! I NEVER thought she would have milk in the one that was so badly injured, but she does. It is smaller than the other one, but I do think she will be able to have a baby nurse on it!!! I am going to miss her.....she ended up being more like a dog after I had to care for her for so long to help her heal up.....but there is a lady here that would LOVE to have her.....with TWIN BABIES TO BOOT!!!

There is SOOOOO MUCH to get ready and SOOOO MUCH to do!!!! They will be coming to move me in about 2 months......

I will be very sad to leave here, with my AWESOME raised beds and garden, but things are already getting kinda rough around here. Mostly druggies in this particular area, with the emphasis on METH and they will steal anything at this time......and it will ONLY get worse. I am going to keep this property in case the whole family needs a bug out place, they are just not AFRAID enough yet......but, as you know, that time is coming. They only "get" part of what is happening....they are of the tribe that "it can never happen in America"......because they are uninformed and also afraid to face that reality.

Well, I have SOOOOO much to think about, so much to do and so much to arrange.

I am leaving because one person alone will not make it for more than a few days.....when things really start rolling.....especially if that person is 70 years old.
The only issue with where they are, is they are about 60 miles from a large city. HOWEVER.....the only access to where they are is across a long causeway. There are a number of ways that can be defended if it comes to that.....

Oh, I'm SO happy for you! I've been praying about your situation... it's, quite frankly, dangerous in normal times, but these aren't normal! Hopefully, her hubby will relent about chickens after he sees that your other animals aren't a problem, but being near family should be so much better!

Lots of lists!!

Good point!!! Hadn't thought of THAT!!!

I wish I could use her way of canning dry beans. It's a lot quicker. With my digital pressure canner, I have to go ahead and cook the dry beans, before I can them. I'm thinking a 1lb bag of cooked dry black-eyed peas will fill 2 pint jars. That's what I'm counting on. I won't know for sure, until I actually can them.

I gathered more squash and tomatoes this morning. Our peas are coming along really nicely. Turnips, too, but the mustard isn't doing very well, and lettuce didn't make it. My seed order finally came, and will be making out another one soon.

My Blair order still hasn't come, but am expecting it to arrive this coming week. I will order 2 more tops when I get paid again, Wednesday. That should do me for buying clothing for this fall and winter. Cary could also use more shirts for winter, and will be ordering more Carhartt's from Cabela's also on payday. Our local TS carries Carhartt, but they don't have a big selection.

Our temp outside right now is only 77 degrees. I think Fall will be coming early for us. It's going down into the 50's for the next few nights.

A couple of years ago I went sort of crazy and bought several short and long sleeve tops on ebay. Mostly because I'd put on too much weight for my other clothes. I didn't really wear many of them because we stopped going to church. So now I have all those nice tops to wear this winter. We stopped by a thrift store a couple of weeks ago coming home from the VA and I scored 4 nice long sleeve tops, one I doubt will fit, but I really liked it and it was only $2 so I got it anyway.

Back when I had an anxiety attack a couple of years ago that last for 3 months nonstop, I lost down to 120lbs. Everyone told me I looked like a skeleton. Over the last 2 years, I gained all my weight back and then some. When I lost all that weight, I went out and bought a whole new wardrobe. At 140lbs now, a lot of that doesn't fit, so I'm forced to buy new again. I can get almost everything from Blair in my petite size. I'm short and petite sizes are all that will fit me. I've been ordering from Blair for many years.
