Good Morning :)

Busy end to last week; worked Thursday, spend Friday morning to late afternoon with my co-worker Buddy while he had surgery, then went to the high school football game with daughter, SIL and the grandkids - it was a great game!! We squeaked out a 44-41 win; so nice since it was the Homecoming game. Little grandson didn't fall asleep until the 4th quarter this time - that boy sleeps sound, I'm here to tell you! Didn't stir during the yelling as the score went back and forth, the jumping up and down and hollering as our team scored, or the wild carrying on and booming fireworks display as the game ended. Any of y'all don't like the NFL players behavior? C'mon out to our high school football game - I'll guarantee you won't see it there!

Back to work Saturday - got a text message in the early evening with 4 photos of a very grown up looking granddaughter in her homecoming dance dress - amazing what an up-do, makeup and heels can do to transform a normally pony tailed, legging and t-shirt wearing young teen into a young lady :)

Made a few stops on the way home from work - Aldi to stock up on half and half, lemonade, and frozen oj concentrate - got 16 of those to put back in the freezer. On to Walgreens, where they had Hubby's (and the cat's; he shares lol!) favorite smoky sardines on sale with coupon for 69 cents ($1.50 savings/can); limit 6. They also had the Butterball turkey bacon daughter likes for 99 cents/6oz pkg, and I had 6 - 50 cent/1 coupons, so 49 cents/pkg. Wandered down the clearance aisle and snagged Fiskar round and pointed 5-5.5" school scissors for 29 cents/pair; don't recall how many I purchased, but enough that she had to divide them into two bags - I'll hold out two pair for the grandsons for next school year, then send one bag to the kindergarten to put in their school supply stockpile; the other bag to the grade school.

Popped into CVS then:
2 -pkg Huggies diapers on sale @ 2/$20 (baby shower gift - I go for useful!)
2 - bags Mars brand Hallowe'en candy @ 2/$6 (starting to stock up!)
1 - Chicago Trib Sunday paper @ $2.99 (have already pulled $6 of coupons out of the inserts)
6 - regular size Butterfinger candy bars @ 2/$1 = $3 (co-worker is going to make a dessert to bring to work to celebrate all the September birthdays; these will be part of the topping.)
Total: $32
Used:
1 - $6 off $30 purchase scanner coupon
2 - $2/1 Huggies coupons = $4
1 - $1/2 Mars candy products coupon
1 - $5 Extra Care Buck from prescription cash back program
1 - $1 Extra Care Buck from buying Milk
Total: $17
Paid $15 plus tax; got back $5 ECB on the Huggies, and a $1 ECB on the candy

Last stop: Dollar General, where I picked up an under-the-shelf basket for the upright freezer (it held most of the orange juice I got at Aldi), 12 cans of soup that were on sale buy 2/get 1 free, and a couple containers of tb cleaner - totaled $26.30 before tax, and before $5 off $25 purchase coupon was applied.

This morning, Hubby and I worked on removing the black walnut obstacle course - or at least it feels like an obstacle course when you walk across the side yard to the garden!! Two full-to-the-brim small garden trailer of black walnuts later, we were ready to plop down in the rockers on the front porch and cool off with some iced lemonade!

Here in a bit, I'm going to pop over to the nearby town and pick up the rest of my Sunday papers plus some split chicken breast that is on sale for 97 cents/pound. Hubby and I will prep it for canning and/or freezer tomorrow.

Hubby's putting lunch on the table - I bought a rotisserie chicken the other day; it was 49 cents if you bought 10 pkg of Knorr sides at 10/$10 - I had coupons, of course :) AND I had a cash back deal that gave me $1 on said chicken (cool - 51 cents to bring a chicken home!!) so we are having that with one of the packaged rice mixes with some frozen peas and carrots added in for color and nutrition. Not sure what the plans are for after lunch - if we don't go to a small festival down south a ways, I"ll likely spend the rest of the day working inside as it's another hot one outside - heading toward 92*F; I'll be glad for the cooler weather that's supposed to start showing up on Wednesday - that's for sure!

Better get off this computer and get to the table - gotta let the cook know I'm grateful for the meal!

Take care all; have the best week possible!

Worked up the 97 cents/lb chicken breast; ended up with 18 pints of canned chicken breast, 14 quarts of canned chicken broth, 6 pint vac sealed bags of chicken breast in the freezer, 1 mostly full pint jar of chicken fat resting in the fridge, a large container of chicken salad and a chicken n' rice cassarole in the fridge. I'm TIRED!! But it sure does feel good to have that put back in the pantry and freezers!! Small local grocery store had ribeye steaks on sale so I snagged a couple when we ran into town to the cemetery today (not really wanting chicken for supper tonight for some reason :p ); we'll have those with loaded baked potatoes - tater, broccoli, cheese, crumbled bacon - for supper; apple slices for dessert if we have room.

I plan to zip into the store on my way home from work tomorrow night and pick up some more of the split chicken breast; see if I can't get a bit more canned on my Thursday/Friday off work (got a football game Friday so I'll have to finish up early!) - I'm pretty much out of room in the freezers for the moment. We use the home canned chicken in quite a few different meals - chicken salad, chicken biscuit stew, chicken and dumplings, chicken and noodles, chicken veggie soup, cheesy chicken veggie soup, various chicken and rice cassaroles, chicken alfredo, stuffed shells (large pasta shells), chicken tetrazini, and probably a few other dishes that I can't recall at the moment - so it's not going to go to waste!

I'm hoping to get more beef canned up when I go on vacation in a couple of weeks - need to get my island counter cleared for action on that, and for putting up apples as well. We ran out of Dutch apple jam this year - I made regular, with dried cranberries, and with dried cherries last year; plan to repeat all of those this year, but make half again as much. The golden delicious apples aren't ripe yet, but should be by the time I'm on vacation!

The cook is hollering that supper is done - sure am glad I don't have to cook on Sunday and Monday :)

Wishing you all a great rest of the week!

Store was out of the sale chicken breast when I stopped by after work, but I did receive a rain check for 4 packages at the sale price; that will work out okay as I'm - #1 Out of freezer space; and #2 Fairly busy and next week will be a better time to deal with it anyway :)

So far this week, I've added 4 pks of baby wipes, 4 months worth of multivitamins, 48 rolls of TP, and 20 bags of Hallowe'en candy (Butterfinger, Milky Way, Heath, M&Ms) to the stockpile - all purchased using scanner coupons, manufacturer's coupons, extra care bucks and points - and a little bit of cash out of pocket. Now I'm waiting for next week's ads to come out in hopes of more good candy deals to stock up on.

Lousy sleep last night, an hour of aqua aerobics this morning, followed by stops at 4 stores, then lunch at the Mexican restaurant with friends and co-workers is making the couch look verrrrry inviting this afternoon; I think it may even be whispering my name but that could just be sleep deprivation... :) Tomorrow is Grandparent's Day at the Grandkid's schools, so I will be busy with that throughout the day, then high school football is on the agenda for that evening. Life is good :)

In the prior week's prep thread I reported:
He he he. Nothing here as exotic as musk ox or moose. Our family likes canned mandarin orange slices. I don't buy them from China. (Our puppy almost died by the poisoned Chinese dog food a few years back.) We'd been getting them from Trader Joe's. Come to find out Wegman's has them imported from Spain in Pear juice for like half the price.
Just got back from Wegman's. Prior to this week the canned mandarin orange slices shelves were always half full at best and usually only had a few cans. I told one of the managers they could sell the H*!! out them if he did a little advertising because all the other major chains in the area had them sourced from China and TJ's was selling them for almost twice the price and was a significantly longer drive. This week the shelf was stacked, not high and deep but fronted with more than I've ever seen since I've been looking. Maybe it was just the timing?

Oh - I love my All American canner!! Wishing you many happy hours of canning!

Some folks have difficulties with the lid sticking the first few times they can with it - check carefully to make sure the lid is on level by checking the gap on each lock down and keeping them even; and don't use super-human strength to tighten the lid down overmuch - nice and snug is all you need.

I must confess I'm a bit unsure of how to use it. I've had a Presto pressure canner for years, with the gasket and all... you just lock it down and you are good to go. All these screws to tighten down are a bit intimidating ...

I sold a cord of wood and paid for two new chainsaws. Feeling pretty good, I turned my labor and some gas and into new equipment. Gas station still out and we keep hearing excuses.

Piece of cake, Just a Nurse 2 - pop the lid on so that the 'ears' on top and bottom are in line, adjust the gap 'tween top and bottom so it's even all around, bring up the screws and tighten them until they are just touching the lid, then tighten them down in opposite pairs until they are snug and even. Fuss with it a bit - run it with just some water in the bottom; then run a load of jars of water. Trust me - you will love it!
