I'd love to have plants and i tried in this current house, but little to no good sunlight. I have a few dust catchers (fake plants) around, they do add some color. I do not have a green thumb)

I'm hoping and praying once we get the pantry room organized (and we are making progress) that the rest of the house will shape up too.

I've decided to move most of my paperbacks (and there are many) to the shelves in my brother's cabin. This will free up several book shelves in my office/computer room for new acquisitions.

ETA: For over a year I watched youtube videos regarding prepping. I'm so sick of the fear mongering. I'm well prepped and don't need or want warnings to stack it to the ceiling. So I've gone through and unfollowed almost all of the prepping video channels that I have been subscribing to, including VP. and a few more on close to the chopping block. If I need information I'll search for it. New people to prepping really do need to watch some of those videos though. I get most of the information I need right here on TB.

God is good all the time

Judy

Judy, I'm sorta confused. Did your brother buy the cabin that your DH was building? Will he be living there with you and DH to help ya'll out? Just wondering, since you said, "my brother's cabin".

Yeah. I'm over all the fear mongering, too. Tired of reading all the "hair on fire" warnings over and over again. We're as prepared as we can be at this moment in time, and as long as God allows us, we'll keep prepping. That's not fear, it's just being prudent and responsible with what God blesses us with. I'd rather have our money in food and means of survival than to lose it all when the dollar means very little. We can't stop what's ahead, so I don't lay awake at night trying to figure out and worrying about how to change or stop it. To tell you the truth, I've just about stopped reading the main page and the Bomb Shelter here. I've had enough doom porn, Covid crap, different never ending war threads/alerts, election threads, and politics to do me for a long while. I see this thread as my "go to place" most of all. We can all talk about prepping without all the doom. I still like to read what everyone else is doing.

I am planning on putting in clamatis next year around cabin. Not sure if I spelled it right.
It's a vine and says not harmful.
Many different colors.
Other than that, I usually plant peas and then green pole beans around the coop. And sunflowers.
Makes good shade and gives back too.

Some great ideas there! I will try next Spring. Never ocurred to me to plant garden veggies outside the garden. [One of those color within the lines kiddos.]

A room without books AND houseplants is like that for me. I heat with Propane, so don't remember if gas is bad for houseplants? Maybe somebody can school me? I'd really like to put some plants back in here but don't want to kill the poor things.

The project for this week is building a second Chicken Coop which will be a growout pen for the young chooks and hopefully have a few seedlings under grow lights, too. Ran out of cattle panel that we were using to make the skeleton for this thing. Was bummed for a few hours and then realised we had a stash of those behind the Cabin. Yay! Work continues apace.

Does anybody know a fast growing vine that can live in dry, hot areas and isn't deadly to chickens and rabbits? I need to put some green over a few things out here. Prepping for times when I might not have electricity to run A/C.

I too, need to work in my apothecary. Being your own doctor is work.
How about a purple hyacinth vine? Not sure about the chicken thing. The vine grows quickly and loves heat. Doesn't take off till around July here when it is good and hot...I live in Central Alabama.

I decorated all day and I do mean all day. Fortunately for the family I did the heavy cooking on Saturday knowing that I would be decorating most of the week!
We will go to the closest big town to pick up some shelves and to do a Sam's run for holiday food! I don't know that I could shove another prep be it food or otherwise anywhere. But having said that I found a McCormick spice package for bourbon pork that I thought was pretty tasty and quick. It is one of those sheet pan meals where you put vegies and meat on cookie sheet and bake. Hubby sliced up about 1 lb of a pork loin and I threw Brussels sprouts and potatoes in. I will do that again.
Everyone remember to stock up on elastic, shoelaces, and clothespins?
Praying for everyone. May you all find that place of peace and may you smile at least once an hour!

Thanks for the good news, ya'll! My Mom and I used to grow African Violets in a wick water system. I still have the planter she bought 30 years ago. I am slowly finding ceramic double stack wick water planters at the Thrift. They are so expensive new. There are certain things from my younger days I miss and Violets is one of them. Definitely NOT a prep item (unless you put that under Preps That Feed the Spirit). Without those, I'd shrivel up and die.
Oh I love African Violets! I have one that is just now blooming after nothing all summer! I think flowers were created just for our souls to enjoy. Right now my Thanksgiving Cacti are really putting on a show and hopefully the paperwhites I am trying to force will be forced by Christmas!

Stopped by Publix to pick up a couple of bogo things for the pantry--rice a roni and mac and cheese mainly. They had my English breakfast tea on sale for $2.50, when it is normally $4.25 (80 bags), so I bought 3 more boxes. I already have more than 20 boxes that I have vacuum sealed, but I couldn't pass up that deal.

For the first time, I noticed some big holes in this Publix. Usual things like pasta, pasta sauce, and just low stock on a number of items. Had only about 10 packages of toilet paper in the whole store, and not much more in paper towels. Just weird for this Publix, so definitely will be keeping a closer eye out.

Have more shopping to do this week. Still dehydrating frozen veggies.

I went through the stage of apocalypse. I'm more into prepping due to saving money and being stocked up for winter.
I have so much put away for just about anything. But there will always be something that comes up.
I went from being a doomer to a homesteader and it's more peaceful this way.
The one time it all paid off was when my hubs got sick and we were set for supplies so that helped a lot.

Clematis is gorgeous, but quite slow growing. I had a sky blue one I planted to cover a large stump in the front yard. It was stunning in Jube, and always put out a few blooms in September just before frost.

Grapevines make a great dual purpose shade cover. They'll need pruning yearly. But annuals... pole beans or cucumbers, CAN also work.

Summerthyme

I was able to grow two pole bean plants lol on my cabin fence. Kids enjoyed them. I'm going to try planting them on the other side next spring

We were coming home Monday afternoon and a big bobcat ran across the driveway in front of us. That is the first I have seen in a long time. My chickens have been staying close to the pen when I let them out lately. I thought a hawk was bothering them, but it may be the cat. I have not lost any that I know of yet.

Yesterday we started putting the leaves on the garden. We only did a little, but slow and steady and all that. I had the 3 year old grandson who was a bit congested. The dust in the leaves was not helpful so we quit after a few loads.

No kids today and that's good because this Nana is dragging today.

Philkar, I use that McCormick bourbon spice a lot when I bake pork chops. I buy it in a big bottle at Sam's. I mix it with bread crumbs, dip the chops in melted butter, roll in the bread crumb mixture, put in a baking dish, and bake in the oven. Always tender and juicy with lots of flavor. The recipe you used is on the back of the bottle that I have.

Cary got a great report from his MD, yesterday. He doesn't have to go back for any more follow up visits with this MD. Just his regular scheduled appointments from now on. Doc did tell him to go back on one of his BP med's, since his BP was beginning to creep up again.

Will be going into small town to do grocery shopping, today. I need to stop in at the dry cleaners to pick up a few items I had dry cleaned, then on to Walmart. I feel more comfortable at this small town Walmart than I do the one in big town.

Tomorrow, we'll go to big town for a Sam's and Aldi's stop. Then on to Jared's at the mall for Cary's watch band resizing. Not looking forward to this trip. I'm rather gun shy in all the crowds of people this time of year. Two years in a row, I was in big town Christmas shopping. I was in the parking lot of Hobby Lobby, and was jumped by 2 black men wanting my money. The very next year, the same, but I was in the parking lot of our wine shop. Cary goes with me, now, but I still get very nervous, even though, he is always armed. Did I mention that all the GTR are very tribal here? They roam about in packs.

Good Morning, All!! What is happening on the prep front at your place this week?

I'm holding back on spending at the moment in case I need to take a leave of absence/get fired from work due to not taking the vax, so my prep chores are mostly going to consist of trying to organize what I have, and beginning another inventory since things haven't been being added or subtracted from the lists, and things have been carried down to the storerooms but not put away.

I have a few other things on the list this week like dealing with the Social Security birthdate issue, finishing mowing off the gardens (when/if it's dry enough), gathering more of the hardy herbs and plants to hang them to dry for use this winter, and checking the seed company websites to see if I can place an order.

A bit later today, I need to run over to daughter's house and clean out her fridge, then make a run to the Evil Empire to pick up things like milk, eggs and bread to restock since they will get home late this evening.

Tomorrow, after I get back from the big town, I want to make up a few dishes to put in the freezer - enchiladas, bbq meatballs, more meatloaf mix, some side dishes like hash brown cassarole; then bag up and season some veggies to use for sheet pan meals - I'll add in shrimp, chicken, or smoked sausage when I'm ready to bake them.

Then I'll try to not to worry about the SNAFU going on at work - at least I've sort of caught up on sleep the past couple of days...

Take care all; wishing you all a safe, productive, and hopefully happy week!
You are an incredibly busy woman and it is probably stupid to even ask, but do you ever think of writing anymore? I sure enjoyed your storytelling way back then.

Small town wasn't too crowded, today, at Walmart. There were some sales, and I made use of those to add to my food storage. Rice a Roni was $1/box. I got 8 boxes. Zatarain's boxed yellow rice mix was on sale, but I can't remember the price. I bought 4 boxes. Idahoan instant roasted garlic mashed potatoes were $.64/pk. I bought 4 of those. Idahoan boxed Au Gratin potatoes were $.94/box. I bought 4 of those. I bought a flat/12 cans of Margaret Holme's field peas with snaps and a flat/12 cans of Bush's black-eyed peas. That's all I bought for storage. The rest was just regular groceries for 2 weeks. I didn't need any meat, really, but went ahead, and bought 2 1lb chubs of ground beef and 2 packs of 2.5 lb ground beef, plus a bag of Tyson's frozen, boneless chicken breasts. Since the store wasn't at all crowded, I took my time looking all over the store. Got the extra toilet tank stuff we needed for storage. More vitamins. They were out of flannel bed sheet sets in our size, so didn't get those. Twin and king is all they had. I'll look for those at Sam's tomorrow.

It was a good trip. I actually enjoyed it this time.

edit.......I forgot about all the gravy mixes that were also on sale for $1/pk. I bought 20 of those in all flavors. Chicken, pork, onion, and country style gravy. I remember when they were $.50/pk regular price.

Went to town to Walmart. Stopped at free table at dump first, got some nice stuff. For kids gifts.
Walmart was stocked. Got what I needed.
Went by dollar tree too, got a bunch of what I needed there.
Stepson has 60lbs ground venison for us. Will hold till after party. Might can a lot of that up. There isn't anymore room!

Walmart here was fully stocked, today, too. There were stockers all over the store stocking shelves. Almost every food aisle had large pallets of stock waiting to be placed. I saw no shortages at all.

Good evening! We too went to town to pick up some shelving units. I found 2 Christmas cacti which I will repot and give as gifts. Made a Christmas wreath for an elderly family member, and delivered some poinsettias to some older people that don't get out and certainly wouldn't drive to town! Everyone had some decorations up and those that didn't will get a visit just for decorating hopefully next week. We visited an Aldi's and bought some special treats for the holidays. I love cheese and they had a smoked cheddar that looked delish! There were some bare spots but not too bad. Stated baking cookies yesterday! And now that it is Dec 1st I am listening to Christmas music. Someone who lives in this house as a rule!

Did my normal Thurs errands and picked up some deadfall in the driveway, then went to WM for my pick up. The store was seriously lacking in stock. They had taken 3 of dh's OTC meds off of my order and said they were out of stock. I went in and they were right there on the shelf. Milk went up 30 cents a gallon since last week. Now $3.59. and they were almost out of whole milk...
They had no lemon juice, none of the paper plates I wanted, no Mrs. Paul's frozen fish, no Pillsbury frozen biscuits, no frozen purple hull peas, and I got the last bag of breaded okra they had.
Big holes in most of the aisles. Quite a few extremely p*ssed of folks in the store.

We'll be leaving afterwhile to go to Sam's, Aldi's, and the mall. I hope Sam's and Aldi's are fully stocked. I won't be back in big town for another 2 weeks. I hate making special trips. I need to pick up some things for Mom at Sam's, too. Hoping they have everything Mom and I need. Since this will only be my second trip to Aldi's, since the store opened, I hope it's fully stocked, so I can get a better flavor of what it's like now. I don't plan to buy anything at Aldi's, since I bought groceries, yesterday. I just want to check it out for the most part. I'm taking shopping bags with me just in case I see some things I want, though. I'm a sucker for bargain deals!

We had quite a drive yesterday to pick up the shelves that my brother was going to bring, but he had to cancel his trip. The shelves were at home depot. The store looked well stocked and there were plenty of employees (surprisingly). Brother prepaid for the shelves and he threw in some nice totes. Now to get them put together. These are the last three for my pantry room. Dh doesn't think all my stuff will fit on the new shelves, but they hold a lot more than the old shelves. We'll see.

Speaking of breaded okra, the chicken place where we go to get chicken livers has been out of fried okra for awhile and I've not noticed any in walmart either.

Our trip into big town, yesterday, went well. No "hold ups" or "stand off's". We tried to be very aware of our surroundings at all times.

Got in and out of the mall without any fanfare. Got Cary's watch band fitted at Jared's. Then, we went on to Belk's (in the mall, too) where I got a bargain deal on a new purse. $88 regular price for $30. I was happy. I tried on some new boots, but they didn't fit right, so I didn't get any.

I left Sam's without getting everything on my list. No canned evaporated milk, no Ramen noodles, and no cases of pinto beans. I substituted the pintos for green beans. I did get my vitamins, 15lb bag of potatoes, assorted snack pastries, and a stack of aluminum cake/baking pans, 36/pack. No bed sheet sets.

I enjoyed the trip to Aldi's. I saw several things there I could get cheaper than at Walmart. I'll be making this a regular stop each time I'm in big town from now on. What a difference than the last time I was in there! Neat, clean, and very nice. Fully stocked, too. I didn't buy anything, since I had already bought groceries. I was tempted, though. I could hardly believe that I had paid $1/pack for gravy mixes on sale at Walmart, and they had theirs regular price for $.45/pack! Some of the canned veggie's were $.49, and without the pop top lids. I should have waited about getting the green beans at Sam's, until I got to Aldi's! They were out of pinto beans, too, or I would have got them there. I'm sold on Aldi's!

We tried out a new Mexican restuarant in town, before starting back home. Our regular little Mom and Pop place that we've been going to for years went out of business (Covid related). So sad, so we had to find a new place. This new one has only been open for a couple of months, so we tried it. Was good food and wine, but was more expensive than the Mom and Pop place. It was really nice. We'll be making this our "go to" place for Mexican from now on.

We're really enjoying, "Jericho". Can't figure out what Lennie Jame's character is up to, LOL! NO SPOILER ALERTS!!!!! Parachutes have just dropped food, medicine, and a generator around the town all written in Chinese..........This should be fun to watch........We'll see, tonight. LOL!

When we went to the town that has a home depot, we ate a Dennys. Hadn't been do Dennys in awhile and we won't go again. I wanted an omelet, but their selection did not appeal to me. I ended up getting a bacon avacado cheese burger with onion rings. The burger was good but the onion rings were awful. It was more expensive than when get chicken livers and it was DH's time to pay.

The little cafe in the small village near here has finally opened to dine in after the initial lock down, she has been doing take out for all that time. Part of the reason recently was she couldn't find anyone to work there.

DH's favorite place to eat out is McDonald's and he likes their 4 for $4, I've started getting their new chicken sandwich but I just can't seem to get them to leave off the pickles. I know you can take them off but they leave a pickle taste and I don't like those kinds of pickles.

Cary loves McDonald's quarter pounders with cheese. We don't eat there very often, but there is a McDonalds really close to my mom's house in small town. He likes to stop in for the burger when we visit Mom, sometimes, if he's really hungry.

Thank you, Rabbit :) I jot down ideas now and again, but life has been so hectic that I usually can't even remember where I put those pieces of paper. I thought that I was going to have to retire over the covid vax thing, and managed to dig a composition book out of the school supply cabinet with the idea of organizing whatever story notes I could find, but that is as far as I got. Since the mandate is on hold and we are still losing nurses to travel jobs, as well as two others that have completed advanced degrees and will be leaving us to go to other facilities soon (because management is too darned stupid to see what they are losing grrrr....) I am getting hounded to pick up OT hours .

I had to go stay with the grandsons from yesterday afternoon until I dropped them off at school this morning - said time included younger grandson's 4th grade math homework, and with only a few hours of sleep under my belt after getting off work at 0800 it was an even bigger pain in the fanny than it usually is. I did much better on the human circulatory system science homework  The younger one and I then escaped on bikes for the half hour of older one's saxophone practice... Then, since I'd 'played' with the younger one, I got roped in to throwing a football for the older one for a half hour... I was getting a pretty good spiral on left handed, but my aim was better right handed. However, I won't be making any fast moves that require neck ligaments, shoulders or arms today; and I'm thinking that the smell of the liniment should keep most people at bay, so that could be a bonus....

I hit the Evil Empire after I dropped the boys off at school this morning to pick up work lunch stuff; wandered through the ladies department and found three pair of the jeans I like in my size on the discount rack. I think I'm set for britches for a while now. And when I got home a bit ago and went to stash them for later, I accidently found where I'd stashed the wool socks I picked up on clearance at Rural King last spring while looking for something else, so rotated a couple pair of those into my sock drawer - and printed some labels to go on the storage tote to tell me what was in it.

I've got three night shifts in a row starting tonight, so since I didn't get much sleep last night because the grand-dog kept coming in to the guest room and nudging me with his nose or whining until I got up and checked things out, I'm headed to bed for what I hope is a nice long nap...

You folks take care out there; stay safe, stay sane...

I've done some spending of some money the last few days between Walmart, Sam's, the Dollar Tree and Aldi. The idea is to have my preps at the level I want by Christmas.

The following have been added: a case of quart jars (took some searching), more rice and beans, some OTC meds, more frozen veggies to dehydrate, lots of snack type stuff, butane! (this has been really hard to find), a big box of those dehydrated has browns to put in jars with oxy absorbers, some new Martha White muffin mix flavors (apple cider and pumpkin), more mac and cheese, and butter.

Things I can't seem to find: vitamins that I want in anything other than gummies; frozen peas and frozen peas and carrots--I can usually find corn and mixed veggies, and stir fry mixes that I don't want, but other than that it is pretty slim, and I can't find the above two for anything.

We are busting at the seams here, but I don't plan on spending much in 2022. Just going to give the finger to inflation and the government and live off my storage. I'm not paying $7+ a pound for hamburger when I have 50 lbs in the freezer and at least that much canned, all bought at much lower prices.

Found the boots I normally wear for $50 off regular price, so I picked up another spare pair. Also found a battery powered chainsaw that uses the same batteries I use daily...also on sale. Wife splurged and picked up an air fryer - we'll see how that works out...but with discounts, sales and points a $120 unit only cost $40. Can't complain...
Roofing companies are finally starting to submit estimates, but won't be able to start until the middle of January at best...hoping for a dry December. But it will give me time to replace some soffit and facia...heck, it's over 30 years old, kinda like me...lol...where DO the years go?

I got a few cook books out of mother in laws shelf that her daughters did not want. One on sourdough and the other is The Oats, Peas, Beans, and Barley Cookbook. They are both older books. Maybe from the 60s. The rest are booklets.

I got our son some of Gramdpa's heavy shirts to wear to work. The rest of their clothes will be donated. Slowly we are getting the house cleaned out.

Our daughter got another promotion at work. She also told us we are going to be grandparents again. Now they really need a bigger house. Theirs is about 800 sq ft. They already have a 4 year old. So the house is full. I told them they could always add on to their house. They are going to try to buy my hubbys parents house. But with house prices today, they aren't sure they can afford it. They have been looking for other properties, but there is not much that meets their list of priorities.

The pantry room progress came to a halt a couple of days ago. Being hardheaded and thinking I was correct the measurements I had in my head did not work out for some of the shelves. I miscalculated by about 4 inches on the back wall. We had to unload two units to make the adjustments. DH had told me what I was saying would not work. He was a real trooper about it and really ended up doing most of the unloading.

Everytime I tried to work on it I would get dizzy and feel like I was going to throw up. Bending over does that to me. so he graciously got in there and got it done. We/he only has three more shelves to put together. I can't seem to help much.

I'm astonished at how much DH's attitude towards my not being able to do much (at least I am keeping the kitchen clean). He's just picking up my end and going with it. I was never the type that really asked for much help. But now I'm limited in what I can do. The shortness of breath is hanging on and its a bitch to deal with. I'm not sure that all of this is new, its just been exaserbated by covid.

I'm praying that those of you that have not had covid continue to do everything possible not to get it. My young friend in new orleans recovered in less than a week, she's 35. DH actually recovered quickly, just not as fast as my friend did.

After the hold up in the pantry room, progress is now being made. Praise the Lord. getting my food organized will also mean the rest of the house has hope of getting organized.

I'm sorry to keep complaining about having had covid, but it has been difficult and I'm spoiled to not having much in the way of health issues through the years.

Picked up my produce pak today and a couple for friends that couldn't get to that grocery store. The local store does a big brown bag full of fresh produce for $15. This month's had 5 # of potatoes, a sleeve of celery, 1# bag of carrots, 4 bananas, and 2 each of avocados, apples, pears, oranges, zucchini, yams, and a green pepper. this will keep most of the month stored somewhere cool - and definitely worth the price!

After that rotten bacterial infection I have had, I have had a lot of shortness of breath also. I lost a lot of weight and have been weak.
We had different illnesses but the recovery has been very similar.
I started on a supplement called white lung..and it has really helped my shortness of breath.
You can get it on amazon...might help you, I know it has helped me.

I'm having washing machine problems, today! :sht: It won't go through the spin cycle. It just stops with water still in the tub. Cary has tried to figure it out, and I've been having problems with it for about a month now. I actually had to get a load of towels and sheets out of it, try and wring the water out by hand, and run outside to throw them over the line in the rain!!!!! They were still dripping wet, anyway.

I'm so sick of this cheap crap they peddle these days! This is a GE that is less than 5 years old. I joined the forum in 2018, and I bought it right after joining. Bought it brand new. Computerized crap, and it'll cost just as much to have it fixed as a new one. That's what the repairman told me about my last washing machine, before I bought this one.

Started looking around the home and checking major systems and components we take for granted, you know like the furnace and the hot water heater? Looks like the water heater is going to be replaced. It works fine but is at the end of its life. It doesn't owe us anything.

In our opinion better to get a new one now than find out they're not available or cost the moon when it finally quits for good.

I'm having washing machine problems, today! :sht: It won't go through the spin cycle. It just stops with water still in the tub. I understand! I'm on my 4th washer in 15 years. Ridiculous! We bought this one at Lowe's, and I bought the extended warranty this time! Mine started barely spinning out a week before Thanksgiving. Whirlpool was going to order a part, but I have yet to hear from them. I do laundry for 7 of us weekly, so I really need my washer. I have alternatives in case we ever have a grid down scenario, but I hope I never have to use it.

This is exactly what I've been trying to tell Cary about our near end of life hot water heater. He won't budge by getting a new one, though. I guess he'll be the one heating water on a fire outside if the thing goes out, and we can't afford or find a new one.

Yeah. I bought this one at Lowe's, too. The only alternative I have is two large galvanized wash tubs on the back porch with water heated on a fire and a rub board. I do 2 loads of laundry a week, sometimes more, for the 2 of us.

I managed to get the Chicken coop done. I haven't done any pictures for a bit as they would not have shown much. We were working on small details for the last few weeks.

In the pictures you will see a completed pen, wired in place with skirting going out at least 3 feet from the walls. The greens boards you see was our way of tying the hardware cloth together without having to wire together. Worked out pretty well.

Also you will notice the very very nice flooring in the coop. A buddy does flooring for a living and he gave me two boxes for free and some scrap plywood. This made it possible to finish the coop chicken door and do the flooring. Yeah it is Island Condo quality, but the chickens won't mind.

The buckets you see will allow them to feed without making a mess of it, thus saving money in feed. Rather that is the story according to my other buddy.

I will be getting chickens tomorrow, but no idea how many. The 2nd buddy is bringing them over.

Lastly the last big haul of the season. Over 500 peppers. We were projected to get a frost ( didn't happen ) but the wife didn't want to lose any peppers. So she picked them all.

I do at least one load, if not two daily. In 2018 before we purchased this washer, I looked at Speed Queen. Now I wish I would have spent the extra money and bought one. They have a really good reputation.

I have no clue as to what brand we'll get this time. I'm open for any and all suggestions. I don't even know when we'll get back to town to see what's available. Hopefully, before I need to do laundry again.
