Not sure what I'll manage to get done this week; got home from work Thursday morning and had lost my voice, but otherwise didn't feel sick. Woke up feeling lousy on Friday - head cold symptoms, cough, fever, aches - and spent most of the day in bed. Set my alarm for every 4 hours, and got up to drink something and take another dose of med. RSV is hitting our area - along with covid and flu, so it's a toss up, though I don't think it's flu. Yesterday, I stripped my bed and put on clean sheets, threw the others in the washer in hot water - will probably change them out again tomorrow.

I pulled down the 'Covid' tub that I had stocked meds, etc... in since I'd pretty much depleted the one bottle of multi symptom cold med that I had in the kitchen. Hubby went to town to get a new vaporizer since our's decided to stopped working - finally found one at the 4th place he stopped. I may mask up today and go in to replenish what I've used, plus pick up some more packets of Emergen-C; mine went missing. Or I may send Hubby - he might want to get away from me by now

I'm glad something prodded me to go down the frozen food aisle at WM when I got off work Thursday morning - I picked up 4 more containers of frozen pineapple juice - it helps break down phlegm.

Well, gotta go grab a mask so I can tell the cousin who just pulled in to stay away from us

Take care all; stay safe out there!

My nephew/boss was out all week with flu/strep/double ear infections. Said he can't remember ever being that sick.
RSV also rampant in community.
My preps are still get my stuff organized. DH built shelving so i have clear most floor space. Its like Christmas going thru cases of stuff.
He mainly cooks out of the pantry so that was he zone to organize so I dont get a call at work when he is looking for Italian green beans or pasta.
Adult daughter is on board now, her and SIL went to an auction and bought 4 drawer filing cabinets while biddings on vehicles seized and fleets retired. He repairs and refurbishes the vehicles and flips them.
They took extra bedroom and put a wall of 6 or 8 file cabinets into it and thats their preps storage . Out a sight of company.
Makes you feel good when you look wise to grown child and not my hoarder mom.

I have a question about storing some of my home canned goods. I've absolutely run out of room in my pantry and bedroom. I was wondering if bright sunlight will affect the storage life of these products. I have no other place to store my jars, except in the laundry room which is mostly all glass. I have no curtains or blinds over the windows and French doors, but I have a good bit of storage space in there where I can stack cases of home canned goods. The room is unheated in the winter, and it stays cold in the summer, because our ac is in there.

Home fellowship, today, but nothing scheduled for this week, except cooking for Thanksgiving Wednesday afternoon.

Everyone have a safe and blessed week!

I'm reasonably sure that its best to store home canned goods in the dark and not sunlight. You might transfer some of your commerically canned foods to your laundry room.

I was posting in last week's thread thinking that this was Saturday, then towards the end of my post I remembered Thanksgiving at church. Oh well.

Since our week is chopped up with multiple Thanksgiving dinners, going to work on organizing. Pretty much using instapot or air fryer daily right now on the few days we actually get to be home. Looking to make them semipermanent counter fixtures for awhile. Don't have much counter space.

Gonna partially thaw and cut up a big turkey from freezer. We like fried turkey tenders a lot more than baked. Will thaw it just enough to cut into strips then seal and refreeze. Also looking to try out a big instapot someone gave me. It has a digital canning feature I really want to try. Will see what's on sale this week.

Don't have to cook big dinner this year. Oldest has it all taken care of. All we have to do is show up. :D Joining an elderly relative at nursing home for holiday dinner early in week.

Couple of our big stress issues will be resolved this week and another in 11 days (we are counting, lol). Have a 45th wedding anniversary to celebrate in Dec if the world doesn't fall apart.

Happy Thanksgiving. Hug those you can while you have the chance.

I have taken Mucinex the past few years, but last time I bought it, they only had the FastMax, and that stuff is worthless. It also tastes so bad I can barely swallow it. And I have used Hall's cough drops since I was a kid, they don't work at all anymore. I said that I wasn't going to by anymore peppermint lifesavers, since they're bio-engineered, but they are the only thing that will make me stop coughing.

We have sickness here too. Both of the grands that I homeschool are sick; one of them has been staying with us since Tuesday while her parents are celebrating their anniversary out of town. This morning hubby woke up sick. :(

Fortunately he made our grocery run yesterday, finishing up on buying the stuff that’s on sale for Thanksgiving. Since Aldi has butter on sale, we went in enough to get three cases of it. I can’t stand the thought of running out of butter, Lol.

Hubby also picked up two truckloads of wood to split this past week. We’re trying to keep our wood stock up to being at least two years worth.

I have three pans of stuffing to make. I got the last of the needed supplies yesterday.

We are still eating out of the pantry, as we have been doing since summer. Scary how much stuff I had put back, but good to see it used. I do refill the back end when I can.

I have kept my groceries to under $75 a week for two by eating what I already have. I am normally only buying fresh items.

Marseydoats, I pretty much threw everything plus the kitchen sink at it. My 'Covid Box' held Dollar General brands of liquid cold meds - Adult Tussin in four differed formulations - one said Multi-Symptom Cold and had a CF label for cough, nasal congestion, mucus. A different one said Cough and Chest Congestion and had a DM label. The third was Max Strength night time cough control - had a moon on the label - I used it at bedtime. The last one was a Max Strength Tussin CF night time max - it included acetominophin, and had a moon on the label same as the DM version did - gotta look close. I aslo had Zinc lozenges, Vitamin C, Elderberry chews, Vicks topical for the upper chest area, and a Vicks liquid for the vaprorizer. I didn't use any or med containing acetaminophin because my fever didn't get into a range where I felt I needed it.

I used the Adult Tussin CF about every 4- 6 hours for about 28 hours; it said it could be taken every 4 hours. I also threw in some generic Zicam (zinc lozenges - a no-no if you're on coumadin or any of the 'cycline' drugs), Vitamin C, and Elderberry chews at various times when I'd crawl out of bed. I'd luckily left one of the frozen pineapple juice concentrate containers in the fridge to thaw, so I'd scoop a spoonful out if the phlegm was getting bad. I kept a water bottle and a small thermos of hot water with lemon on my nightstand and made sure to drink something when I'd wake up. Oh, and the obligatory Vicks to the upper chest

The mess started Thursday with laryngitis - and I can still barely speak above a whisper. I feel pretty good today, but am still sleeping a lot more than I usually do. I've got until Tuesday evening to get better before I have to go back to work; hate to call in as co-worker buddy says we have some co-workers out with whatever it is, including him.

I plan to scout the local Dollar Generals to replace what I've taken out of the tubs as soon as I feel safe to be around the public.

Today's was hilarious for me. Ordered tuna fish for the pantry bank on the first. Order came in with 6 cans dented. Two of them absolutely mangled. Called Sam's Club. They shipped two more packs. Overkill because one would have replaced the damaged amount, but okay.

FedEx misdelivered that package. Call Sam's Club again. They ship 2 mpre and give me a credit. Good thing the sent 2 packs because another 6 cans damaged. But okay, I got what I ordered and a couple extra. Figuring out tuna cakes for the dented ones.

Then someone shows up on my doorstep this morning. With the missing FedEx package that was dropped at the other end of the street at a house being rebuilt. No one had come by until today. This batch only has 3 dented cans.

I have more than enough tuna for quite a while.

In other stuff, cleaning out more stuff we don't use. I normally buy several turkeys for canning and grinding but there's so much on my plate right now that I'm not doing that. So I got a few smaller ones to make for meals over the next few months. Then I can freeze the extra and make stock from the bones.

Over the next month I'll be making versions of german chocolate pie and pumpkin pie that are safe for my son and I. But I'm going to make them cupcake size. That size is typically enough for either of us and will give us plenty to hold through for a few months. I don't need crust but I can try them with keto flour. I have several frozen GF crusts in the freezer that I'm just going to thaw and fit to the cupcake pan. The german chocolate has a graham crust that I'm just going to leave off.

Home cured and cooked ham is the dinner for Thanksgiving. And the extras will be sliced and frozen for use later in the year for my son. This way is much more affordable than finding and buying uncured hams. I will pick up one or two regular hams for me when they go on sale, and pack them up as well. Makes for quick and easy ham dinners throughout the year.

I don't know anything about Mucinex, but I take Guafenesin and Benzonatate for cough. 600mg of the Guafenesin. I took this combination when I had bad covid last year and it controlled my cough. Its available without an Rx. Although I'm blessed to get it from the VA. I swear about this stuff, I have a tendancy of having a chronic cough because of allergies and this combination keeps it in check.

The DM on the box of cold med stands for Dextromethorphan; you shouldn't take it if you take an MAO inhibitor medication (Nardil
and Parnate are a couple I can think of). You might be asked to show your drivers' license or state your birthdate. We had an influx a while back of teens and young adults on the unit after drinking a bottle or more of a cold med with dextromethorphan; they called it Robo-tripping.

Guaifenesin is the active ingredient in Mucinex...
It's best to not take Mucinex and a cough suppressant at the same time... once you thin the mucus, you want to be able to cough it out.

I hope all that are sick will be well soon. Like some of you have mentioned flu, Covid, RSV and strep is rampant here and has been for the past several weeks. So many kids and staff have been sick at the school my DD’s teach at. A few weeks ago one grandson came down with flu, that afternoon the other one also tested positive, the next day granddaughter was sick and although she tested negative she had an ear infection and then the very next day came down with flu. DH also got flu from our grandsons but by the grace of God, my mother who was visiting during all this, nor I,
got it. Granddaughter came down with strep last week. The poor kids can’t seem to catch a break, all 3 of them have had flu at least once, strep at least once (youngest grandson has had flu twice and one of the times he also had strep along with it) and Covid at least once.

Last week I made up two batches of Italian sausage balls and froze so that should be enough for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and two batches of DH’s beloved Crockpot candy. The way he’s been going after it, I don’t know if it will hold out for company or not! The menu for Thursday is planned out and most things are bought and on hand. Turkey and smoked picnic are thawing in the fridge, cornbread for the dressing is in the freezer. Now, fingers crossed I don’t get sick.

DH wants to make a Sam’s run tomorrow so I’ve been working on a list but with all I need to do this week I‘m not going and I hope he doesn’t bring any germs home!

Oh so much cooking to be done. Because hubby and I have serious diet restrictions, even if I go to my mom's, I still have to prepare most of the food, but that's okay. I make the dressing from an almond flour and sour cream biscuit recipe. I have 4 lbs of cranberries to cook down. I make mashed cauliflower with cream and butter. And a pumpkin custard with sf whipped cream.

Hubby got the holes drilled in the new water filter system, so now we have a stainless steel system instead of plastic buckets. Those poor things were almost 20 years old. They served us well. I will probably use the old buckets as flower pots in the green house.

I was able to get all the brush from esrly summer burned finally. We are no longer under a burn ban. Yay. There is a little less clutter in my yard.

sun only effects canned goods thru the transfer of solar heat - low temps are best but ambient room temp will do >>> the UV part of sunlight doesn't help much in the way of goods - there's dozens of ways to filter or block .....

Since the jars of canned goods will be in the cases the jars came in and stacked, would using an old quilt to cover them work? Anything to keep the bright sunlight off of them? I'm not worried about the temp getting too hot or too cold, just the sunlight.

I have plenty of old quilts and blankets I can use to cover each stack to block the sunlight. The room is unheated in the winter, unless I'm using the wood stove in there, and it stays cool in the summer from the ac unit. The only boxes I have are the boxes the jars came in.

That will work. I bought boxes from Uline that fit a dozen pints or quarts (2 different sizes) I needed them in b9xes yo be able to store them on my tower shelves I designed.

The only warning I'll give is you don't want to stack them directly on the lids..l at least out a piece of plywood or heavy cardboard between the layers.

Somewhere on here, i posted pics of my tower shelves... I'll bet Cary could easily make some. Each one is free standing
( although we bolted them together in rows where we had the room), and will hold 7 cases of quarts or 11 cases of pints. They are so handy!

Thanks, Summerthyme! I do remember seeing those shelves. I have plenty of cardboard I can use between each case. Now, I've got space to store more! I'm finished with canning ground beef, and I want to get started canning all the dry beans from my freezer, but I had no more room for anything else, until now.

A pumpkin pie and a pecan pie are made and, in the freezer, plus a large tub of cool whip. Rolls are also made, and in the freezer. I took out the chicken to thaw in the fridge, so that I can boil it to make my chicken dressing with. I still have the deviled eggs to make Wednesday afternoon, along with making up the dressing and giblet gravy. Everything will be held in the fridge, until the next day. That's what I agreed to take to DS's house for our Thanksgiving meal. DDIL is doing the turkey and some of the vegetables, and her mother and sister will also be bringing more vegetable dishes, plus homemade cranberry sauce and a homemade Dutch apple pie. Mom won't be with us this year. She and her best friend are going out for their Thanksgiving meal. Her friend is all alone this Thanksgiving, so Mom is taking her out to eat. I feel like everything will be just fine this year. It supposed to be 62 degrees that day with RAIN. Gonna get soaked trying to get everything loaded and unloaded. I'm hoping the rain will hold off, until afterwards.

It's been a busy cooking day so far, and I'm making beef meatballs and onion gravy, mashed potatoes, lima beans, plus biscuits for our supper tonight. Cary can have miniature Reese's Peanut Butter Cups for his dessert.

I should sleep good, tonight, as I will be very tired. I'll have a glass of red wine, and that's sure to help, too.

Picked up the USDA commodities this morning. Sweet potatoes, 2 heads of cabbage, chicken leg quarters, 3 packages of cookies (these are going to the church. I've got to lose some weight), 2 soft packages of beef stew (the dog likes it) 2 soft packages of mushroom soup, 5#s of flour (I may put the flour in the upright freezer since DH got it cleaned out and turned back on) and a few canned goods, this is all times two, we each get a box. Everything is a blessing except for the cookies (LOL).

We also stopped by walmart, DH wanted to get a hair cut, the salon is closed on Monday, but sometimes you can't tell DH anything. I had decided I need more canned pineapple. They had some, but it was picked over and a lot of dented cans. However, I got what I wanted. And still I spent $44, sad on the one hand and glad that I could be what I felt like I needed.

I got a package of shredded cheese because I think I'm going to surprise DH and make his favorite tuna noodle casserole for thanksgiving, Its been a good long while since I've prepare that. That and some (as my daddy use to say) low and greasy green beans, delish. I think I've still got some garlic bread in the freezer. And I bought a cherry pie on Friday. I also have pie shells and bake him a strawberry rhubarb pie as another surprise. Of course the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

LOL, is there any other way to make them? My mom made the best low and bacon grease greasy green beans. I love them made that way. Sometimes, she cooked a whole onion in with them. I also like them sautéed in butter with a bit of chopped garlic. And then, there is the great green bean casserole. I love green beans!

no onions, only salt and pepper and new potatoes. I think bacon grease.

MARANTHA!! Even so, come LORD JESUS!!!
WOW!!
Went out to feed and water and ended up out in one of my storage buildings!! Was looking for some more BIG jugs for water.

Only found one of my BIG jugs, but OH MY!!! ALL THE OTHER STUFF I FOUND!!

I FOUND 1/2 gallon jars of beans, all different kinds, that I had packed up over 10 years ago. They all appeared fine. I found corn meal, grits and corn that I had put in jars and vacuum sealed!!! They looked OK!! Found all my craft stuff, which is all in good shape and found my Inkle loom!!! Also found a bunch of antique coffee maker type things, old, very old pitchers and cups and my portable water heater, that I have looked EVERYWHERE for!!

When the "evils" lived here, they took a lot of my things and packed them up and put them out in the sheds, because they wanted more room for THEIR things. Of course, I did not know this, and thought those things had "disappeared" as they often did after they moved in!! NOW I see why!!

Anyway, I was quite PLEASED at all I found!! I fed some of the grits to my chickens and they gobbled them up!! The flour did not fare as well. Although there were 3 pots/jugs that looked OK, there were 2 which it was easy to see had been invaded by buggos and weevils. They can be added to the compost pile though. Or, the chicks can eat them....bugs and all!

Came in the house covered in dust, spider webs and grime.....time for a lovely wash up, and now that I have found my propane tankless water heater ......I can even take a BATH!!

YEE-HAW!!!!

The best laid plans...
Last November we lost our Great Dane..he was a rescue and would have been 12 the beginning of January. .
We were both heart broken...but kind of reconciled to not having a dog..I told DH if we were meant to have another.. it would just happen. .
Well last Friday he got a phone at work...Boo Boo a fellow who had worked with him part time had rescued a little Maltese Shih Tzu mix she is about 2 to 3 years old and had not been cared for properly. .they had given her a bath and cut lots of rats out..and she had been kept in a crate most of the time..and had had one litter...we think they just wanted puppies to sell..Boo Boo raises large dogs and couldn't keep her ..of course DH gathered her up in his arms and brought her home ...she didn't seem to have a name..so we named her Maggie Mae...she is so sweet and just is so happy to have to a home with people who love and want her.. it only took about 5 minutes for us to fall in love with her..she is cute as can be..
But all the plans for the week have been rearranged...but that is just fine. Since I will 76 next month it is kind of nice to have a little gal I can pick up...it is so cool how these things just happen. ..

Having a grateful day. Lost the brakes on the van on Friday. Heard them go metal to metal just as I turned down the street to the house.

Friend decided that he would come swap them out because my body is refusing to accept the cold weather. And, since I still had the original receipt, the new pads were free under warranty. That was a serious chunk of money saved. Turned out to be one passenger side pad that wore out. All the rest look absolutely perfect and almost new. But... it didn't etch the rotor at all. Rotor was still flat and smooth.

And then there was actually work available today. And I managed to get a bit over my normal daily goal. If I can do that for tomorrow and Wed, I may manage to get close to my normal weekly goal. Because unless things change drastically from prior years, there won't be any work available from some time on Wed through about noon on Monday. So fingers crossed.

Well, the tree cutters have unloaded another large tree in their dumping site. Cary is on his way down there, in a few minutes, to see if it's a tree that he can cut for firewood. He doesn't want to be greedy, but he can't see it just lying there going to waste. Once it stays there so long, they push the whole thing down into a deep ravine. No one can get to it to cut, then. We've already got at least a 3 yr. supply under roof, but you never know what the future will bring.

Also, we both went shoe shopping for each other's Christmas gift this morning online at Keen's. I'm so hard to fit, but I found 3 pair in my size that I really liked, so I got all 3 pair. I have to get them when I find some that I like that fit, which is hard to do. Cary found one he really liked, so he got those for himself. We will now have a good stock of shoes (both casual and hiking/walking) on hand for a few years. So, we're all done with our Christmas shopping.

DH is out in the goat pen behind the house cutting up limbs that have fallen for firewood. We already have a good supply, at least 2 years, probably 3. He finally quit using that crappy wet wood and has been bringing in some good wood. It burns so hot that DH said he's going to mix it.

I bought myself two new pairs of New Balance shoes earlier in the year and DH likes the cheap velcro fasten cheap shoes from walmart. Year before last I bought him two new pair of boots, he won't alternate and has only worn one pair. I didn't need any new shoes, I still have plenty and some almost never worn, but these were a good deal that I couldn't pass up. I've got a pair of New Balance that I use for every day, but I mostly wear flip flops even in the winter and push between the toes of my compression stockings. Anyway this pair is probably 14 years old and they are still in very good shape. I also have a hard foot to fit so I get them while I can.

Still trying to get the commodities from yesterday put away. I have potatoes from last month that I still need to do something with. I have illusions of canning them, sad. And now I have 12 pounds of sweet potatoes, large ones. I'm thing of eating one a day. They are very healthy and tasty drowned in butter.

I started last night not eating any thing after 4:00 pm in an effort to lose weight. I kept wanting something to eat, I was not hungry. I kept telling myself that it was important for me not to eat. I only had a cup of tea and water. Yay me.
