Getting the thread started for the week - already typed out a post but managed to hit a wrong key and delete it  Maybe I'd better have another cup of coffee and get ready for work instead of trying to re-type it :)

Wishing you all a good week!

Snagged a huge frozen turkey at Wegman's for $0.25 a pound. The catch was we had to buy an additional $25.00 of groceries and have a Wegman's store card. They may be doing coupons for the turkey's. The cashier mentioned one.

The house smells like an early Thanks Giving. Time to break out the pressure canner.... maybe after lunch.

Sweet potatoes weren't on sale there yet. Right before the holiday they usually go on sale real cheep and I like to pick up a case. They will keep in a cool dark corner of the basement till spring. If they last that long.

We took down a dead pine tree that was beside the house. I am glad it is down safely.

I checked our bee hives again and pulled off the extra supers. Our hive that was struggling has stored their super almost full. So that is good. Our swarm hive we caught was a little low on honey. I added some from the original hive that i was pulling a super off. That is usually our honey, but we have enough. We still need to reduce the enterance on one hive for the winter.

I canned two canners of apple pie filling. I still have more apples. It is time to do it that is the problem.

We built our first fire in the wood stove Saturday. Today it is not too bad this morning, low 40s. Tempatures will drop all day with a cold rain maybe mixed with snow.

This week we have to go to Little Rock to see hubbys pain management dr. We usually stop in at BassPro and wander around a bit. I may go to Lane Bryants and pick up another couple bras. I like the two i bought before. They fit well and friends said they really hold up well over a couple years.

I have been turning on my solar light in the hen house in the evening several days a week. We are now getting about 6 eggs a day. That is plenty for us. I still need to butcher and can some of the old ones. Again, time is my issue. Babysitting my 13 month old grandson puts a kink in my to do list. But I am so glad I am healthy enough to keep him. There are too many crazy people in the world now days.

Tasted the first salsa I made and canned. Came out too mild. I like a bit of kick to the salsa. So I told the wife and she upped the heat. I made the mistake of tasting it before we canned the next 7 qts. Big mistake. My mouth was numb for an hour.

We did can 7 additional qts of salsa, but only six made it through. I can had the bottom bust. Not sure why as we did check all the jars, (they were new). No biggie, but on to the next target. Not sure what I will can next week.

Loving the wood pile, sold 2 more cords of wood. Thinking about trapping now. It has been so warm. Freeze up is late, I am trying to think how I can turn that to advantage. Thinking about trapping hills behind town pretty hard while waiting for freeze up. I am late ordering supplies for trapping supplies . Fur prices are down.

Monday, Hubby and I took the van to town to have some maintenance done on it, then headed to Aldi to pick up a few items for ourselves, and also for the grandsons - their classrooms are collecting specific items for the local food pantry, with an eye toward Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. I pulled the list up on my phone as we walked through the doors into the store and explained to Hubby what I was doing; he didn't bat an eye and loaded into the buggy as I pointed them out. He used to not be very positive about my donating things, but has come around the past year or so.

One positive thing for us that came about from picking out the donations was that I discovered Aldi has the small canned hams for $2.69; I hadn't noticed them before so they might be a seasonal item; since they were in stock I added two extra to the buggy for our own pantry, and will try to pick up at least four more before the holiday seasons end. This is the time of year when I stock up on items that are seasonal or rarely go on sale at other times of the year, so I have to stretch the grocery budget to cover all of those types of items.

I had coupons for Libby fruit and veggies, so didn't get them at Aldi, holding off instead until I went to WM, only to discover that our WM doesn't carry Libby's products! I went ahead and picked up a variety of store and Del Monte brand veggies instead - and since there were items on the list that could be used to make that icky green bean cassarole (ducking and running lol!) I found the small packages of French fried onions and threw a few of those in as well. (If I end up with some of those onions left over, I crush them, then use them up when I make a hashbrown and egg skilled for breakfast.) When I got to daughter's house with the grub, the grandsons each grabbed a box and helped sort out the items to carry to each of their classrooms in 'their' box. Good thing that they have 4 days to get it all there because I don't think younger grandson could carry it all in one trip - or even two although the school is only a couple of blocks away :)

3-5" or 5-7" of snow in the forecast for overnight, depending on which forecast you pay attention to. I'll be going out shortly before dark to top off the bird feeders as I'll be heading to my work Buddy's house this evening to spend the night there so I won't have to fight drifts or slick roads on my way to work tomorrow. Buddy has 4WD on his truck and only lives a few miles from work, so we will be fine for getting to work from his house. I'm hoping to spend only one night; that decision will depend on Hubby's road report when he goes home from work Thursday evening. I will go ahead and leave a sleeping bag, pillow, blanket and extra set of scrubs in his guest room closet in case it ends up being a snowy winter.

I am looking forward to having the weekend off work; the grandsons are looking forward to me having the weekend off too - but I don't think any of us are as excited about me having the weekend off as daughter is  Wrestling team practice has started up again, so that is more running she has to do; good thing she is self employed!!

Well, the tapioca pudding I made while I was typing this is about cool enough to transfer to some 1 cup canning jars so we can take it in our lunches. Then I need to finish up the dishes, fold the clothes in the dryer, and take time to put my feet up for a bit; might even take a bit of a nap as I probably won't sleep very well tonight - I'm used to hearing coyotes and owls; not human neighbors!

Take care all; hope you all have a good rest of the week!

The Doe didn't get to go into an unnatural environment (my freezer) but went straight to the crockpot, the Excalibur, and the pressure canner. Chili, Ragu, and Jerky. Mama's tired. I still have lots to do, but two months of busting butt feeds us for the rest of the year. It is a good trade.

It finally froze hard enough to kill the garden. I picked the last of the tomatoes and squash. I was able to re-pot some of the Tomatoes and my Green Chili Peppers to hopefully overwinter in the Greenhouse.

The Pigeons were moved to Winterhome- the winterized coop. Both Rabbits and birds are enjoying the warmth. The dogs, especially Mo (who is at least 90 pounds now) did not like the ice under paw and asked to come in quicker than normal. Mo the big goof landed in my gut this morning in an attempt to wake me up. Lali was a barking cheerleader as she watched Mo pummel my middle and hear me make sort of a strangled scream. That pup ain't missin' no meals. Both are now productive protective members of the homestead.

We trapped a large sow Coon entirely too close to the house and the stock. They are getting braver.

Once all this busyness gets done, I may be able to sit again with my crochet hook or knitting needles and get a little of that done. The last shawl is a beautiful thing. They are addictive. I scored more yarn at the Thrift. Some was acrylic, but I got five large balls of mohair roving that need only have a drop spindle applied to them. I still haven't gotten the fleece washed, as canning/hunting season put a stop to that for now.

Today is a beautiful and sunny 62 degrees, which beats the cloudy windy half frozen it has been.

I am putting together a grain order, and am expecting my Marcato Marga Mulino Chromed Steel Manual Flaker Oat Roller & Grain Mill in the mail today. They are from Italy and I hope it was a wise prep purchase. It will be used for soft grains. The reviews say oatmeal tastes better that way.

Stay safe and warm and have a blessed week ya'll.

Yesterday I did my Thanksgiving meal plan, pulled supplies from my pantry and then took my list to town to shop. I went to HyVee, Fareway and Aldi. HyVee and Fareway items were 99% sale items. I stocked up on Cool Whip for the year and butter for three months. My church has a Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday so I planned/shopped for that too.

I've been reading old issues of Countryside from 1980's and 1990's. They are full of common sense information and a no cost prep. Also, I'm already thinking about 2019 gardening season and planning in my head. Probably should start making notes so I don't forget my brilliant ideas!! This area is going into winter with excess ground moisture so depending on what additional moisture winter brings gardening plans may or may not happen. I picked up some seed packets for 25¢ at Dollar General last week and moved my saved pepper seeds into storage containers.

Cooked up the $0.25 a pound turkey. There was a lot of brine pumped into it. Still it is tasty with a fair amount of fat and should can up nice.

Snow is falling off the roof in big chunks. Each one falls with a loud thud which the fur ball has to tell me about with loud barks and woofs... just in case I didn't hear it. The main roads are cleared... mostly.

We got 2 turkeys on sale. So now we have 4 total. Took one of the last year birds and are now defrosting it. Since we eat at the mother's house each year, we will be cooking this for putting up to eat later. The bones will be boiled down, excess meat taken off for the cats and the broth put up for later use.

Nothing else planned this week.
