Just like you would food. The things that harm herbs (and dry foods) are moisture, oxygen, and light. So I like to keep mine in glass (vacuum sealed) and in the dark. I find that plastic ends up letting too much air in, even if sealed and I just don't like the .... I don't know... taste/smell/feel of things after they have been stored in plastic for a while.

I don't buy mine in bulk. Just a lot of those large plastic bottles/jugs from Sam's. I do empty them out into glass canning jars and vacuum seal, too. I keep a "working out of jar" in the kitchen. I only stock the basic herbs that I use on a regular basis. I do the same with all my spices.

With another inch of snow on the ground overnight, I guess I'll work inside today. :(

I have several tinctures and salves to label for sale at the gun show we're attending May 18. The family all thinks it would be a good venue for selling my books, so I'm going to give it a try, and the herbal preparations will help fill in the table and perhaps bring in a little more money.

It's a little nerve-wracking doing this for the first time. I did craft shows 25 years ago, so there are some similarities in preparing. Being an election year and more people feeling unsettled about the trajectory this country is on, maybe my products will sell well.

because you see similar table booths promoting bottles of essances & scents - I'd sprinkle around a few Red Cross First Aid symbols >>> make sure the guys - that will be the the majority - know you are promoting the herbal cure aid side of things ....

Planting / gardening continues here. Today, I'm doing a little tree shopping. I'm looking for a new tree for my front yard. I saved some money: I want to get something on the larger side. It's so bare out there! I cringe every time I look out the front window.

DH has dental appointment today. We drive an hour but it is worth it.

Big storm last night. So glad we got the gutters done.

Measuring soon to be Grand for her wedding dress later this week. Another grand coming this weekend to empty one of the bedrooms. Hooray!

Heading for KC in a week to hang out with grands. Can't wait.

Too muddy and rainy outside for any outdoor activity. More thunderstorms later today and into the evening. I wanted to plant my squash seed, but if I dug a hole right now, it would fill in with water. That's how saturated our ground is. We can't seem to get a break from the rain.

The cicadas are still driving us nuts. The noise is awful. Even in the house with the doors and windows closed, we just can't get away from it. They were trying to get in the house, yesterday. Every time the door was opened, one or two would try to come in. The birds, owls, and squirrels are having a feast on them.

I've been lazy today. I haven't really felt like getting involved in anything. Tomorrow, we'll be in big town for Cary's doctor appointment/checkup. His BP has stabilized downward, since the increase in one of his BP meds. That's what doctor will be checking. I wanted him to start taking my garlic capsules with me to help decrease his BP a bit more, but I read that garlic supplements aren't good for those who take blood thinners, so I'm afraid to give them to him. Yes, he takes a blood thinner, too. The garlic capsules have worked wonders in bringing my BP down to normal range.

overcast and warm, no rain guessed at by the weather guessers for today, sure feels like rain.

I'm going to put my medicinal herbs in quart jars, of course it would take less jars if I used the larger ones but I just don't know how often I'll be dipping into them.

DH used to take garlic and he was taking a blood thinner, it never seemed to make any difference. I don't remember why he stopped taking it.

Given all the different medications Cary takes, I'm afraid to give him any supplements that might interfere with them. I know that the garlic capsules have really helped my BP, and I want the same for him. I don't have to worry about blood thinners for myself, though. I don't know how one would tell if the garlic is too much for him. I guess it would show in his bloodwork he has every couple of months.

Yesterday was a productive day. I butchered 3 extra roosters. The hens will be relieved. I still have 1 more extra, but 3 is enough when it's not cool weather. These 3 I will can in a couple of days. I am glad we have an extra refrigerator in the shop for letting meat rest.

After the roosters, I had to add more hay to the poultry runs. All this rain has everything a mess. And we will be getting more rain today.

I ran the weed eater under the electric fence that is around my garden. The grass and weeds are growing so fast. The fence was killing what was touching it, but it was going to get to much on it if I didn't weed eat. After that, I set out 11 tomato plants. I still have to put the cages on them, but they can start growing more now. The weeds need tilling and I saw a few potato bugs. I picked a handful of strawberries: yum! I also saw the first sugar snap peas. After today, we should have 4 dry days. Maybe I can get my tilling done.

Time to get a few things done. Have a great day everyone

Temps approaching 90 degrees with rain. Severe weather with tornadoes possible for the overnight hours, tonight.

We will be leaving for big town later this afternoon for Cary's appointment.

This morning, after coffee, we rearranged the kitchen a bit to make room for a few more cases of Mountain House food. 6 #10 cans in each case. I have an empty corner in the kitchen, now, where they will be neatly stacked. Cover with a nice tablecloth, and I'll have a makeshift table for that corner. I can use it, too. I haven't decided which meals I want to order, yet. Probably, more breakfast type meals. Cary is the one who suggested we get more. When he starts worrying about not having enough, I really pay attention. Water is still our weakest link in our food stores. Can't reconstitute all the Mountain House food without a good source of water. Maybe, I can talk him into getting more rain barrels, since he knows our water situation.

We've decided on getting 2 cases of Mountain House Breakfast Skillet meals. That's 12 more #10 cans of breakfast meals. I can't remember how many servings in a can. We've already tried sample packs of this particular meal, and it's really good. Scrambled eggs, sausage, hash browns, onions, and bell peppers. Just add hot water. We already have 2 cases of their scrambled eggs and bacon. We'll be good on breakfast food for a while if we ever have to depend on it. Better safe than sorry. It's good food insurance.

Morning happy dance. The body wanted the full walk this morning. It did not hurt. And while it was tiring, it was not exhausting. Blood sugar after was 131. Still going down. Oh, and I am not needing to carry the walking stick anymore. I not longer feel wobbly.

I always check with the comadin clinic pharmacist at the VA before I give him something different, but I failed to do that with the garlic, but there were no probems with his INR numbers. I would love to give him Curcumin but they said no.

I'll be asking our Internist about him taking garlic when we see him later today. Wonder what's up with the Curcumin. I've thought about letting him take mine, too. I take Curcumin/Turmeric every day.

Scot was on Coumadin but didn't work, now on Eliquis. What we were told is Tumeric and Curcumin can interfere. Also cranberry can lower the INR.
Scot is on 17 meds a day. But he also takes Beet root chews with no issue.

Boy. In between the other tasks, I got the one side of garden where my daughter had landscape fabric down, all cleaned. Must have been 100 long stakes. It was all grown in with weeds and so on. Its way more garden that I'll be able to keep up with. I left the two other large ones, plus my tires I plant in, and my small gardens out by the cabin. That is probably still way more but we'll see.
I put out egg plant, zuchinni, taters. Peppers, tomatoes, lettuce, beets and cukes. Going to still put in beans and corn. That will have to do.
Strawberries doing good! No peaches this year but pear tree is full. Ok probably will put a few herbs and basil in. I have a raised bed just for herbs. Its ready. The mulberry and elderberry trees are loaded.

Cary takes Plavix. When he had his stroke, our Internist wanted to add an aspirin daily to it. Cary is allergic to aspirin, so he can't take it. He takes Cranberry Extract capsules every day with no issues. I'm feeling more confident that the garlic capsules will work just fine for him. I'm still asking his doctor, today.

My "doctor" is actually a nurse practitioner. She is very up on herbals and keeps a close watch on what supplements I can and cannot take. My issues are primarily allergy related. Of course, some herbals seriously contradict with meds so I'm glad I have someone so knowledgeable advising me.

It is still raining enough every day to keep me out of the garden. Today it's just light showers but tonight and tomorrow more rain in measurable amounts is forecast. Des Moines River is nearing flood stage in various areas. I'm not near any river so only have to be concerned about dredge (drainage) ditch which is close by. Where we lived in Des Moines Four Mile Creek kept coming to visit -- never into the house but across the road in front of the house. The more Ankeny paves over the more Four Mile floods so I'm very glad to be far away. The farmers are starting to get VERY antsy about not being able to plant. Quite a few soybeans were planted a couple weeks ago, but very little corn and not all the beans are in.

I did some cleaning, tossing and sorting for donating in the basement this a.m. Now my back is hurting, and I don't want to do my upstairs cleaning. One thing about cleaning, it will still be there for another day and the world will not end if it's not done today. I'm so tired of walking around crap in the basement so am getting much more willing to toss stuff. I went through two crates of toys and got rid of about 1/3 either throwing away or bagging for donating. Another day I need to give the toys a good scrub and then put them in a closed container so they stay clean. I very very seldom have young children here, but I'd hate to have nothing for them to play with when I do so, I kept the Playschool stuff. I stumbled over a plastic crate Monday and have a good gash on my shin which probably is why I got motivated!

Anna I hear ya. Every room in this house except our upstairs bedroom, needs cleaned and painted and small repairs. The kids still have a full room upstairs on other side that is packed with their stuff. Then there is the two barns and if I can get the camper stuff packed up, I can get it sold! That just leaves my cabin.
I pick one project at a time and try to get through that one. But as you know it doesn't always work like that!

I understand, Wanderlore. I'm back at a point where I have both time and a little energy to make some progress around my house. I'm trying to get ahead before something else happens. Ignoring texts and emails greatly helps, LOL!

(It's half true. If someone needs something urgent, I'll go help, but the chit-chat can wait. I've got other priorities.)

I ordered a pair of shorts, good fit except they have that ripped crap, I misread the description. they look stupid with most of the tops I wear, so I may just keep them to wear around the house and not put so much wear and tear on my other shorts. I've put some weight on this winter and just can't seem to get back on my diet. And with the hot weather nothing seems to fit. I hate hot weather.

My doctor is not pro alternative medicine so I just have to do my own thing. While I appreciate having VA health care, I miss private health care when you could look for another doctor. I'm blessed that I don't have to take any medications every day. I do take some as needed, but I can decide when they are needed. So I don't have to worry about interactions.

DH only takes the coumadin, and a mild BP med. He's never had any issues with the coumadin and is not interested in taking the kind where you don't get your blood checked regularly. He likes to know what his numbers are.

Spent day at in-laws. DH mowed the huge yard they kept for some reason. I cleaned gutters. Thankfully theirs weren't near as bad as ours. Then I sorted out their bedroom and stacked donation stuff. During this time had opened every window that would cooperate. Then tackled the smoking room. Eeeew. Gave up counting the holes FIL burned into the indoor / outdoor carpet. Filled the closet with the kilz and fresh paint I will someday use. Then emptied file cabinets and sorted stuff. Huge stack in middle of room for auction. Big stack of oddball tools and misc for DH to go thru. Vacuumed as I went. 3 dead vacuum cleaners were tossed. The room looks better and I can get to walls anytime to do kilz.

DH was still mowing (riding mower) so I started cutting limbs around the porches. I realized how hot I had gotten outside when i lost my lunch. We called it a day and headed home.

Our storms are not supposed to hit now until dark.

Grand coming tomorrow to help fix farm truck. I will run errands in am and figure out what I am going to cook in mass quantities, lol.

Will be so glad when all we have to deal with is 1 small place.

We live on the family ranch that has been here for 109 years. Everyone brings their stuff because 'you can just store it there, right?'. Sigh. Last month, we cleaned out several boxes that were from DH's great grandfather's cousin with correspondence courses from 1925. Yes, they went on Ebay.

Got a lot done today. Got a plum planted that was growing not where I wanted it, so it moved. Watered the yard by hand, weed eated some, cleaned cushions out of camper #2 to put in camper #1, put up a backsplash/heat guard around the stove on camper #1, laundry, and put two five gallon buckets of chicken poo (that is still hot) in the bottom of 7 new raised beds. It will get covered with mulch and soil, but it was good to get some of the chicken house cleaned. Trying to get some garlic roasted so I can puree it and freeze it in cubes.

We finally got home from the doctor's office. We had to go through a storm to get back here, though. More storms for later, tonight.

Cary got a great health report, and Dr. said that it would be fine for Cary to take the garlic capsules. He's a firm believer in health and nutrition supplements. They are all listed on mine and Cary's charts, along with all prescription meds.

Tomorrow afternoon, I have an appointment with the same doctor. All I need are my prescription meds renewed for another year. Trazadone and Vistaril.

We had a very heavy rainstorm around supper time with more in the forecast tonight and tomorrow. It's going to be a LONG time before I will be able to plant anything. I'm getting antsy, but it's still early. Basically, most anything can be planted up to mid-June with the exception of cool weather things like lettuce and radishes.

I'll share one of my projects.

Okay, so the dead ash is gone, but I now have sun pouring into my living room, starting around 3:30 in the afternoon. I need a new tree as soon as possible. It needs to be fast growing, but not a maple (I'm concerned about maple blight taking off), and big enough to shade several windows but not over 35 feet tall (or so). It would also help if it's not too messy. That's why crab apples got crossed off the list; however, there are some beautiful hybrid crabapples in 2024. The crabapple immediately below is called Prairifire.

1715225251613.jpeg

Right now, hybrid locust trees are winning. I'm trying not to be too particular, but I keep coming back to Shade master (left) and sunburst (right). And there are other locusts that are similar, like Northern Acclaim (I think that's the name). All are good trees for this application.

I normally don't have such a difficult time making decisions, but I've got to get this right the first time. It's going to be too much of an expense if I change my mind.

I won't make a decision this week. I've been touring the subdivisions, looking at trees. And, yes, I love red buds, which is another nice small tree, but they don't grow that fast. I went back to see the red bud that I had planted at my first home in Iowa. It is doing well! But it does have slow to moderate growth, so it's off the list.

We are under a tornado watch, until 10 am this morning. It's so dark outside right now that you would think it's midnight! Heavy thunder off in the distance. More tornadic storms forecast for later this afternoon, once this batch moves on out. Doesn't look like I'm going to get my squash planted anytime soon. Tomatoes, peppers, and garlic are all doing well.

Doctor visit for me, today. Cary wants to take me out to eat for my birthday and Mother's Day. I want to go shopping, too. All of that depends on the weather this afternoon. I want to be at home should we have a bad weather event. It might just be my doctor visit, and then back home.

I was awake for the first wave but I utterly crashed for the second wave. Too tired. Still healing from the latest stuff.

I woke up to see that tornado warnings had changed to flash flood warnings. That likely means that the bridge in town is flooded.

I can't normally walk in the rain but I may try because the body really wants to move. I can't work because the storms took out the internet. I'm betting I slept through my doorbell telling me it couldn't connect which means new lithium batteries.

But for the most part, it's good. I was almost completely caught up with work when I logged off yesterday. New employee is working out fabulously. She catches on quickly, organizes herself, keeps herself on track, and is not a time waster. She does "work on the run" more than me but it doesn't affect her work. And it's kind of amusing to see her figure out that she doesn't have to lose work time in between picking up kids from.jobs just because of driving time.

It's the type of thing I don't do often. But mainly because I don't need to go out often. She is currently playing chauffeur to three of her kids because, as a family, there are only two cars available. They are working on the car situation. But it doesn't affect her skills. She does remember to take lunch more frequently than I do.

Anyways, I think I'm going to see if O can find sneakers and get a walk in.

We are supposed to be in the clear with no rain til' Sunday. Unplugged everything yesterday when lightning started so will have to plug it all back in again this am.

Gotta meet a client in Mountain Home this morning. I would rather drive anywhere else. Drivers don't know what the left lane is for, turn signals are a foreign concept as is looking both ways. At least 3 of our friends have been involved in accidents where someone pulled out in front of them and then died at the scene in the wreck.

Supposed to be stormy again Sunday for Mother's day. Of course. Grand is moving out that day. We have had rain so often that it's been impossible to plant anything or to take items to scrap or auction. Gets very frustrating.

Will probably start spending rainy days painting at inlaws then coming home and canning.

Yes, me too (since February). If nothing else, I'm going to make my house as elder-friendly as I can, without breaking the bank. I'm still able to do most of the work myself, so that's the goal for this year.

That's also why my tree decision is taking awhile. I need both "pretty" and "low maintenance." That's been tough, LOL!
