Whew, what a day at work! So glad to be home; and especially glad to be off work for the next three days. Nothing much that piqued my interest in the Sunday ads as I looked through them on my lunch break other than Hershey bars on sale 2/$1 at Walgreen's - one quick stop on my way home (using $5 in points) and we are now set for chocolate bars to use in making s'mores this summer

Hubby gave me some good news when I got home this evening - a stray cat has moved into the machine shed; hopefully it will take care of any odd rodents that happen by. I'll put out feed for it in the mid morning only in order not to attract possums that tend to wander through the yard in the early morning or the raccoons that come out at dusk. I'm going to have to check our varmint laws - I'm not a fan of raccoons, and if they start getting into things or become aggressive, they will need to be removed. Maybe that shotgun Hubby got me for our anniversary will come in handy :)

Tomorrow will be a trip to the Memorial Day ceremony at the cemetery; I will go early to place flowers on the graves of my parents, aunt and uncle; and to make sure that my father and uncle's graves are flagged. I do not think that we will make it to the other family cemeteries; we have taken responsibility for the care of family grave sites in our nearest town; other family members do the same in their towns. However, some of those folks are of my parent's generation, so we will likely have to step up to take over those duties soon.

The heat is supposed to be severe again tomorrow - 95*F. It was 93*F with a heat index of 98*F today. There was a tornado out in the countryside south of where I work (no loss of life; minimal damage); but we were blessed and had only a few raindrops both at work and at home. The weather is more like July/August than it is May/June; I hope it calms a bit as the summer progresses as I don't think I want 5 or 6 months of this weather! The heat is taking a toll - I put a piece of 1x6 board in the rain water tank to help give the honeybees easier access to water; and put up two more quart size hummingbird feeders as the ones that I had already put up are being swarmed.

Tuesday will be a work day here at home; hoping to finish whatever gardening Hubby and I don't get done tomorrow. We are supposed to have thunderstorms on Wednesday; that suits me fine as I have a 2 hour meeting at work; then two hours to wait, followed by a half hour + of competency check offs. I'm going to try to get some required education done during the wait time; it's not due until October, but can be done any time before then. I figure if I'm going to be hanging around, I might as well be getting paid to do so! Wednesday is also the day the sales start at the chain grocery store; if there is anything on my stock-up list on sale, I will stop by there on the way home.

Well, I can barely keep my eyes on the screen from all the yawning I'm doing; reckon I'd better give it up and head to bed!

Take care all; wishing you a good week!

watch out for that raccoon poop - it's a separate health danger all to itself ....

Thank you for the heads-up, Illini Warrior - the short people run around barefoot outside any time it's even close to warm enough to do so; and have a propensity to pee around/on trees around the perimeters of the yard to discourage wild critters and save flushes (okay, they are boys so it's just for fun; but I try to put a positive spin on it ) I have seen raccoon poop in a couple of areas, so will keep the boys away from those spots - they are very good at respecting those little red survey flags as being no-go areas.

Day with the drama queen went well. The rest, well...... Ya'll - I would so appreciate prayers next week (the 7th thru the 13th). First leg of camping is in the mountains - it will be a challenge, but I think I can handle it. However, the second half is high prairie where there are LOTS of rattlesnakes. I am truly terrified of snakes of any type. I'm trying to put on my big girl pants and deal with it, but each day, I can feel my anxiety growing. It didn't help that we had our first snakebite of the season over the weekend at work and he required two doses of antivenom. We are car camping, so I guess that's a plus. Wonder how long I can go without going to the bathroom? I"m a nurse - I should be able to go 36 hours!!

Don't make me tell you my favorite nurse joke, Moldy... You will have my prayers during your camping trips!

Finished up this quarter's required education today; 2 hours of it was why mandated BSN is a wonderful thing (BSN in 10 legislation like was just passed in New York state). Word is that various groups - ANA, assorted nurse's unions - are trying to get it slipped in assorted bills for state legislators to vote on; I'm just hoping if it passes here that I'll be grandfathered in until I retire as I have NO desire to go back to school for a BSN - even though there is a work at your own pace online course that our hospital accepts, and I can finagle my classes so that tuition reimbursement would cover most of the cost. I would have to re-take several classes since it's been 20 years since I had them - statistics for one (I don't hate much, but I HATED that class!!) I'll likely be retired in 10 years, so I'm probably fussing about nothing that will actually affect me, but it still grates.

Got almost all the rest of the garden in yesterday; need to do cukes, squash, pumpkins, melons and sweet potatoes yet, but first I'm going to have to find some room! We got light rains yesterday afternoon; then heavier rain last night, followed by a duck drowner just a bit ago - rained hard enough I couldn't see while I was driving and had to pull over. Back to work tomorrow and Friday, so I reckon that gives the gardends time to dry out some before I start trying to figure out the planting space.

Gotta meet daughter and grandkids for supper at 5:30; think I'll try to rest for a bit before I head that direction...

Take care folks; stay safe and sane!

Hubby is off to an IDPA shoot today and daughter and the grandkids are at a swim park for the weekend, so I've had a quiet morning so far. Drank my first cup of coffee out on the porch while watching the hummingbirds at the feeders, then took a walk around the edges of the gardens to see how things are doing - 1.5 inches of rain on Thursday and another .2 yesterday means I won't be able to get in there and tackle the weeds for another day or so, but everything looks good otherwise. I do have a flower bed I can weed from the sidewalk; and lots of work I can do with the pruning shears, so I won't be too lazy today....

I had two $5 off $30 purchase coupons at Aldi, so stopped after work on Thursday and Friday to stock up on pantry basics; one of those basic items was 5 bottles of lemon juice - I go through quite a bit during peach season for canning and jelly making. I picked up enough raw sugar to vac seal and pack away a 2 gallon bucket full, added a few bottles of pure vanilla extract, then filled out the rest of the purchase amount with items like coffee, gravy and soup mixes, canned fruits that we can't grow, etc..

I also have a $5 off $25 purchase coupon for Dollar General that I will use sometime today to re-stock a couple of OTC meds; will finish out the required amount with canning jar lids. I haven't noted anything in the mid-week grocery ads that makes me want to run to those stores, so will likely keep myself at home other than the trip to Dollar General. I'm trying to put that trip off until this afternoon as it is 'town wide rummage sale' weekend - I figure the main crowd will hit this morning, so I will have a better chance of slipping quietly in and out of town later on

Well, I think I'll wander on over to the story section to see what's happening there, then get to work on laundry and housework (bleah :p ) Take care all; wishing you a safe and happy weekend!

Renee -most of the classes I've seen other RN to BSN nurses taking are things like humanities and community health. They seem to be graded more on whether they fit the rubric (whatever that is!!) rather than content. I REFUSE to spend my time and money to get a degree that will not add one cent to my paycheck. More herbalism, less 'arrogant education"!!

Finally got most of the garden planted today (its laaaaaaaaaaaate!!) and the bull turned out with the ladies.

Speaking of the story section.... when are you going to add to your story, Renee? I love it,but Charlie and Ellie probably have a dozen grandkids by now!

Most of the classes my co-workers are taking toward their BSNs are management and 'nursing' research classes, Moldy. I became a nurse to help people, to work 1:1 with them; not to tell other nurses what to do. I'd rather herd cats than 'manage' people - especially other nurses! If there is a more hard-headed bunch out there, I don't know who they'd be

As far as the story, I would like to continue it, but don't know that I - cognitively - can.

Folks reading this will probably want to stop here; the rest is some medical crap for Moldy, regarding my last sentence above.

Lots of memory loss, difficulty focusing, etc... since the last round of cancer; some of that is r/t the chemo meds were ones that cross the blood/brain barrier. Being BRCA positive and facing Round 2 of the beast, I went in to the blood/brain thing with my eyes wide open after weighing in the fact that of the multiple people in my family who have had cancer, most didn't survive the first round, and none had survived the second at the time of my second diagnosis. And since then, I'm still the only one who has won Round 2; so - as I'm wont say - at least I'm still here to complain about the damn meds

I've been tried on a couple of meds for the focus - ADHD type meds. Hoo-boy! Gave me lots; let me make that LOTS of energy (legal amphetamines, whataya expect) but also made me meaner than a snake, and I was zipping around too fast to focus on much, even after cutting the dose in half, then down to a quarter. The other ones that they offered were SSRIs, and I wouldn't touch those with a 10 foot pole!

My first round of cancer was ER/PR positive, H2Nu negative - ie: hormone receptor positive, so after surgery and rads, I was put on a hormone production blocker; that one damaged my adrenals, ruined my bones (bone scans to verify this; before and after the med), gave me brain fog, and threw me into early menopause (I'd not gone through it in spite of a TAH at age 44, so apparently my adrenals were holding the fort on that ) I quit taking it after a short time due to the side effects - although they wanted me to continue and offered to prescribe me FIVE other meds to counteract the side effects (including pain meds and an SSRI )

Second cancer was triple negative; that plus three tumors being found during surgery instead of the one they went in after, and gaining in size rapidly.... well, needless to say, they threw the kitchen sink at me.

Since it was a triple neg (not hormone responsive), after I had completed treatment and when the effects started really being a problem, I asked if I could try hormone replacement therapy - they looked at me like I had three heads

Cancer docs are focused on beating cancer - which is a good thing; but they don't deal with what is left. Medical doctors don't know what to do with post-cancer treatment effects other than prescribe SSRIs. I have tried going through the story to when I stopped, planning to do a time line, write short bios for each character so I could quit having to go back and read it all again. I've tried to research key things that have happened since I stopped writing so I can work things into the story - price of silver/gold, restrictions on firearms, etc... but I just do not have the focus to complete it - heck, I don't have the focus to get half the things done I need to do - I've got three loads of clean towels still lying on the guest room bed to be folded and put away (I didn't know we HAD enough towels for three loads!) Not to mention those grandkids I ended up with taking up a whole bunch of my time :D I thought I'd get more done once they were all in school full time, but that hasn't worked out either! So all of that is a whole lot of words to explain why Charlie and Ellie probably won't be back unless I retire - which will probably be when I'm down to two neurons

Wow! Renee.. you are an inspiration, as well as a walking miracle! You go, girl!

Have you tried Gingko biloba for the focus issues? No guarantees, but it might be worth trying. Also, there are various herbal combination products which help with some of the more visible symptoms of menopause... the one I take occasionally (have been post-menopausal for 7 years... only symptoms have been hot flashes and night sweats.) is called... appropriately enough, "Hot Flash", by Source Naturals.

I took it for about 6 months in the beginning, tapering down to one tablet a day before stopping altogether. Went ftom multiple changes of nightgown a night and absolutely miserable days to... nothing.

About 18 months later I started having a few mild daytime hot flashes, so I took 2 tablets a day for a month.

Stopped for over a year, then took it for a couple weeks when some mild symptoms started. That's how I've managed it since.

I don't know if it would help any of your issues, but since you apparently can take hormones with the type of cancer you had, it might be worth trying..

Thank you for your concern, Summerthyme :) I have tried Ginko Biloba, but it made me nauseated no matter if I took it with food, empty stomach, with food that would
'coat' my stomach, etc... I don't have any hot flash type symptoms; I was just hoping that a low dose HRT might help the brain function a little. I will look up the one you mentioned to see if it helps with brain fog; contemplating looking for an adrenal booster as well.
