Good Morning, All! Hope you are all having a wonderful day so far; and that it continues to be a great one!
The grandsons have eaten breakfast and are now watching some wildlife videos on their tablets, so I'm taking advantage of the peace and quiet to start the thread for this week!
Daughter dropped off the grandsons late yesterday morning; I had a list of shopping to do so we decided to head to town after I got a couple of things done at home. I'd planned to use my two $5 off $25 Dollar General coupons just to stock up on canning jar lids at Dollar General yesterday, but a sale caught my eye.... They had Glad brand zipper seal storage and freezer bags at Buy $20, get $5 off; and Ziploc brand at Buy $6, get $1 off. I could use my $5 off $25 coupon in addition to the store discounts, but in order to do so my total after the store discounts still had to be $25, so my purchase needed to originally total at least $31 in order to do so.
Once we got in to town, I dropped the boys off at co-worker Buddy's with a $5 Hot 'n Ready pizza (cheap babysitting lol!) to watch a movie he'd downloaded for them (Netflix doesn't work at our house) and headed to Dollar General...
5 - 40 ct, gallon size Glad Freezer bags @ $4 each = $20
1 - 27 ct, gallon size Ziploc Freezer bags @ $4.25
1 - 72 ct, sandwich size Ziploc bags @ $2.25
4 - The Works toilet bowl cleaner @ $1.65 each = $6.60 (I use this to clean hard water deposits off the outside of the auction canning jars)
Total: $33.10
Used:
$1 off $6 Ziploc purchase store discount
$1 off 2 Ziploc manufacturer coupon
$5 off $20 Glad purchase store discount
Total:$7
That brought my total purchase cost down to $26.10; so I was still able to use my $5 off $25 Dollar General purchase, which brought my total down to $21.10 plus tax. I received a $5 off $25 DG purchase coupon on my receipt, good for next Saturday 5/26/18 only.
I picked gallon freezer bags as that is one of the items on the school supply lists for the grandsons. This way, I'll have the ones they need plus a few extras I can send - and at less cost to me.
Second stop was at CVS to finish off a deal there - spend $20/get $5 ECB; they ran out of root beer when I did the first half of the deal earlier in the week.
3 - Barq's root beer @ 3 for $10
Total: $10
Used:
$3 mailer coupon
Paid: $7 plus tax; got back a $5 Extra Care Buck
Third stop - Harbor Freight for zip ties $4.94; snagged 4 of those mini razor snap blade type knives at the check out for 69 cents each - TOTAL impulse buy, but oh so handy to have in the vehicles/purse/work bag.
Fourth stop: Threw myself on Hubby's mercy and stopped by the shop to drop off some cash so he'd stop by Rural King on the way home to pick up a new water tank for under the shed roof downspout - our old one had finally rusted out. He picked up a 110 gallon rubber looking tank for $60. I COULD have gotten it in the back of the van, but just didn't feel up to wrestling it around to do so; or I could have traded him the van for the truck but it still would have been a pain for me to load (lowered tailgate on the truck hits me mid chest high) where it's not near so much effort for him.
Fifth stop: Grocery Store for a dozen lemons; also found some of their 'Yesterday's Fresh Ground Beef' in the meat cooler; the price has gone up from $2.39/lb to $2.49/lb which still isn't bad, so I picked up just shy of 8#. Also grabbed the box 'o wine that was Hubby's trade deal for picking up the tank. It was on the bottom shelf and the last one stocked so I was down on one knee trying to drag it out when an older gentleman stopped by to ask me if I was praying over alcohol... and if I needed help. I managed to snag it and stood up to tell him "Well, the grandkids ARE at our house for the weekend......this is for my Husband!" so he laughed and went on
Went back to Buddy's house to rescue him from the boys, then headed toward home. Last stop before we got there was our home town Dollar General to use my second $5 off $25 coupon:
I'd decided that the Ziploc bags were overpriced compared to the Glad brand for what I planned to use them for, so skipped them.
3 - 40 ct, gallon Glad freezer bags @ $4 = $12
4 - 30 ct, quart Glad storage bag @ $2 = $8
4 - 12 ct Golden Harvest canning jar lids @ $1.75 each = $7
1 - bag Hostess donuts @ $2 (boys were with me on this stop!)
1 - 2 ct pkg of punching balloons (did I mention the boys were with me )
Total: $30
Used:
$5 off $20 Glad purchase store discount
$5 off $25 Dollar General Coupon
Total: $10
Paid $20 plus tax, got another $5 off $25 purchase DG coupon good on 5/26/18
Got home, got stuff carried in, then started to work on getting the ground beef packaged for the freezer. Youngest grandson was helping Papaw run the vacuum sealer and when I wrote 'Gr Beef 5/18' on the first bag, he asked him what 'gr beef' stood for....which led to "Papaw, what is ground beef?" That answer led to him labeling the rest of the bags for me... 'DEAD COW 5-18'! Boys are SO much fun
Big brother got in to the kitchen act after that and used my Rival Juice-o-Mat to squeeze lemons after Papaw cut them in half to make lemonade - little brother rolled the lemons on the counter before Hubby cut them, then picked out some seeds and planted them in a pot on the porch. We made up a gallon pitcher of lemonade, then fixed up a canning jar of lemon juice and sugar so it would be ready to make another pitcher when the first one empties.
Hubby inflated the punching balloons with the air compressor and the boys played with them while Hubby and I got the new tank set up under one of the shed downspouts in place of the older one - such a relief to get it set up as I use the rain water it catches to water my porch and houseplants, plus the garden as needed. Oh, and to raise tadpoles to entertain the boys (and to eat skeeter larvae)! I may set up the old tank and fill it with composted manure from the sale barn and see if I can raise some sweet taters in it.
It was still too wet to till the gardens, so we pulled some dry wood out from under the shed porch and started a small fire to roast some hot dogs (Hubby and I used pie irons to make grilled ham 'n cheese sandwiches) and s'mores, then I sat on the porch and listened to music while keeping an eye on the boys until the skeeters ran us all inside.
We got a light rain during the night and one more so far this morning - the new tank is nearly full (and has a lovely light yellow layer of pine pollen on top, ewww!) so it looks like it is gonna be a while longer before I get those gardens tilled up as there is more rain in the forecast for this afternoon. Guess that means I'll have to settle for pulling weeds, or maybe planting the flowers in my porch planters instead.
Boys are getting loud; reckon I'd better go see what is going on...
Take care all; stay safe out there!
