Good Morning, All! Coffee pot is dripping, and I'm heading out to feed the cats; will be back in a bit to chat about prep plans for the week. I surely do appreciate all of you who post to the thread - I know I've said it in the past, but knowing that others are prepping gives me great comfort - Thank You!

Good morning. I slept for 10+ hours. I'm as weak as a newborn but feeling sooo much better.

Son pounced for hugs and tickles this morning. He has taken over my bed again. I think he's at the just over the hump stage.

I am ever so glad that we were well stocked on illness supplies. I will be filling those gaps back in quickly. And the med cabinet needs a bit of reorganization so that I can find things a bit easier when I have brain fog. Honestly, I may write down a "what to use" booklet so that I don't forget things in the brain fog.

Friend surprised me by accepting that I'm going to plant raspberry plants at his house. We've been discussing this vigorously for a bit over a year. He absolutely loves raspberry syrup in his drinks and I see no reason that he should have to keep paying store prices for raspberries. Especially when the ones from the stores are frequently not good.

So yesterday, when we discussing random things, it came up again. And he agreed that if I planted them he wouldn't argue. And I'm going to replace his rosemary plant which did not survive the freeze.

And if the babies survived, I'm going to pull the baby rose plants and grow them, and then put one back for him. A prior roommate planted them and has told him that they are coming to get the bush this year. And if there aren't live babies, I'll take some trimmings and root them.

The reason I'm trying for rosehip bush is that it puts out lots of rosehips. A lot of the varieties in the stores don't. And I'd rather work with one that I already know will do what I want.

But it's not happening today. Today is more house cleaning. And piles of laundry to clean bedding and clothes.

Yesterday I got some cleaning done. And got the baby shrubs out of their boxes and into tray so they can be watered. And I can start acclimatized them for outside. Asparagus is still tucked in the fridge drawer. I'm hoping to start planting that this week. Even if just one plant at a time.

Well, we've got so many trees down to cut for firewood than we know what to do with. By the time Cary gets all the neighbors and DS's downed trees cut up, we're going to have too much to put back under roof. He'll be working on it all summer, I'm sure. He worked at DS's house most of the day, yesterday, helping him get a downed tree off of his fence. It just missed their house when it fell.

Lots of clean up still for us to do here. I located all my lawn furniture. I thought I had lost some of it, but I finally found it. Now, I need to get the water hose and wash it all down. Everything is muddy from getting pummeled and tossed around the property. We've got 2 trees that need to be cut up, too, but not for firewood. Our last remaining apple tree came down, and another tree broke. The top of it fell across our fence onto our neighbor's property, but the main trunk still has to be delt with. It didn't hurt our fence, though. So much to do. I guess you can say that we're prepping by laying in lots more firewood.

Tuesday, another trip to our attorney's office to get our will taken care of. He had better be there this time. For us, this is an important prep that needs doing. We'll stop in to visit with Mom while we're in town.

We had to cancel our home fellowship/Bible study, today. Everyone is in clean up mode or trying to clear driveways so they can get out.

I meant to ask a question in my above post but got sidetracked.

When our power was out, I heated soup on my little camp stove. I thought I had disposable bowls in my mini barn, but I didn't. I'll be correcting that problem as soon as my next shopping trip. For hot liquids, like soups, etc., what would be the best kind to get? Paper, plastic, or Styrofoam?

I would say paper. But see if you can find some of the old plastic frames that you could use to support them.

Disposable plastic, in my experience, can warp/melt depending on how hot the soup is. And styrofoam will just melt.

But then, I serve things very hot.

I like the walmart brand that is like the dixie brand. I also keep other kinds of plates on hand that are cheaper, paper and styrofoam are cheaper to use for just a sandwich. My prefered brand holds up to hot liquids and the microwave.

I also use the plate holders if the food is heavy. The only soups I like are the Amy's Organic, her tomato bisque is very good.

Am I the only one who remembers those washable plastic tray things that were just large enough to support a plate or bowl? You'd tuck your plate/bowl into them before you got food.

I don't have a big stash of disposables. Although I do have a small stash for emergency use.

I don't have a big stash of disposables. Although I do have a small stash for emergency use.

I don't remember the trays you speak of, but I, once, had several wicker plates that held paper plates. They were really sturdy, too. I don't know what happened to them. They probably got thrown out while doing a deep clean of my kitchen cabinets in the past.

In an emergency, I don't want the added burden of having to heat water to do dishes. That's why I keep a good stock of disposables. In a long term emergency or grid down situation, I would heat water either outside or on our wood stove. I keep a stainless steel stockpot full of water on my wood heater all winter to use on a regular basis even now. It has been too warm to have the wood heater or wood stove going. I keep my little propane and butane camp stoves for cooking only. I don't want to use them for heating water.

I keep the small stash for that purpose. Lesson learned with the 2011 storms. And paper because I can toss it in the compost pile.

So good to hear that you and son are feeling better today, Kyrsyan!

Sherree - good to hear that you and family are safe!

You all are making me smile while I read your posts today - planning ahead, figuring things out, thinking of ways to make do!

I did manage to get to Dollar General yesterday evening yesterday after daughter picked up the grandson. I picked up only sale items - a large jug of Purex laundry detergent for me, and a tub and two bags of laundry detergent pods for daughter. I also got heavily discounted razors and Gold Bond lotion at their clearance sale as well; and found a package of my favorite cookies that were a Dollar less than at the grocery store (yep, I checked the weight to make sure it just wasn't a smaller package when I got home.)

I didn't sleep well last night because the dang coyotes were running through the yard yipping and howling, so I'm dragging a bit. Hubby doesn't like it when I jerk open the window to howl back at them or blow the air horn while he's trying to sleep - he's just so unreasonable  So he shouldn't be surprised if he comes home from work to find me snoozing in my recliner this afternoon. So far, all I've managed to actually get done is feed the indooor and outdoor cats, carry the non-perishables in from the van and put them away, throw one load of clothes in the dryer and another one in the washer, start a pot of coffee, run the dust mop over the floors, wash the dishes (more to limber up my hands in the hot water so I can type than needing to wash the few there were), then cut up an apple to have for breakfast or actually lunch, looking at the time - while the coffee was brewing.

It was in the high 20's when I got up, and is now up to 40; the temp is supposed to get up to 60*F today and near 70*F tomorrow, so I'm going to try to do some outside things before the temps drop again. My plan is to get my necessary inside work done this morning since it's windy - which makes it chillier outside; then I'll do my outside work in the warmer temps and sunshine this afternoon. One thing I need to do is clean my van - between grand-dog, grandsons, and everything thing that's been tracked in, it really needs it! Though why I'm going to bother since mud season has hit with a vengeance, I'm not exactly sure

One thing I'm thinking about doing is switching out the carpeted floor mats in the van for rubber ones; and I'm going to keep my eyes out for discounted seat covers as well - I got a set of two for the seat the grand-dog uses on clearance a couple of years back for $14 - they don't match the seats in the van, but they do match his fur  I particularly want to find a cover for whatever seat middle grandson is going use when I go to his away from home track meets since I'll be bringing him home from several of them as daughter's work schedule doesn't give her enough time for travel to go to the away meets. Sweaty, muddy adolescent boys stink, so I want something washable! Note to self - remember to send him in to the bathroom with a change of clothes, a zipper bag for his uniform, and a baggie with some baby wipes before we leave so he can give the pits 'n bits a wipe down before climbing in my van. Some of those meets are nearly an hour away, and I've got a sensitive nose  Plus I figure he'll want to stop to eat on the way home and I'm not taking a smelly kid into a restaurant. Dang unreasonable Grandmas anyway...

Looking at the weather forecast, we've got rain predicted for Thursday and Friday, so whatever I want to get done outside needs done in the next few days. Hubby will be off work on Tuesday and Friday, so I've started a list for Tuesday - mostly just checking the tires on my little trailer since it's getting close to hauling Sale Barn composted manure season again, filling the Buggy with fuel, and tightening up the clotheslines so I can hang my sheets to dry and the feather blankets to fluff back up without them touching the ground. While he's doing that, I'll pull the fence posts and tomato cages out of the ground and get them cleaned up for the upcoming garden.

Well, I've been up and down from the computer a dozen times to do things - and really haven't manage to get much of anything done while doing so; reckon I'd better get my list done so I can get to work:
Fold clothes in dryer
Put clothes from washer in to dryer
See what if there is anything else in the van that needs carried in
Shake out the floor mats in the van; run the lint rollers over the seats and floor
Put daughter's laundry detergent back in the van (got carried in by accident)
Pick up trash that blew into the yard
Gather up the cat bowls that blew off the porch
Put together some kind of cassarole for supper (and work lunches) probably pasta, chicken sausage, red sauce, cheese, and Italian seasonings
Put the cooler back in the van
Try not to take a nap so I can sleep tonight
Sort seeds
Find graph paper

Ugh - I need a nap

I'm right there with you, SB and Moldy. That sounds like a busy day, even if it isn't "big" things on the list.

Son ate normal food for the first time in 3 days. And came looking for a bit more before the wandering wiped him out. I think I'm going to make him chicken and rice tonight. Home canned chicken and broth to help the body some.

Since I got rid of the microwave, I've been using a wok more. But the one I have is way oversized for our space. So I just ordered a smaller cast iron version. And while I was on there I found a round Lodge oven pan (9") for $13. So I grabbed that as well. I'll swap out one of my Pyrex dishes for it. I'm going to start keeping an eye out for things to swap out like that. I prefer the cast iron.

I love my crockpot! I'm making BBQ in it for tonight. I cooked the roast in it, then shredded it, and put it back in the crockpot with BBQ sauce. It smells so good. I always use the crockpot liners, so there's no mess to clean up.

Raspberries are quite invasive , suggest surrounding them with embedded boards.

Last week we worked on eliminating our pigeon problem in the barn. I don't mind pigeons except when they are in our barn. They poop on everything. We had already covered the back door and the side walk through door with fruit tree netting. Saturday we got the front 16 foot wide door covered. We hung chicken wire first then more fruit tree netting from that. Yesterday morning there were 3 pigeons that had managed to get in. We eliminated them with the BB gun. I also knocked 3 nest down while we were working on Friday. We will check later this morning to see if any more managed to get back in. Or if they have moved to the other barn. The second barn has doors though, but they could go under the wall. There is a couple feet gap where the siding ends before you get to the ground. They were on the property when we bought it so we have been trying to remedy the mistakes.

I am going to try to plant some of my strawberries today. Hubby still needs to work on my tiller. He has part of it back together. I am going to need it soon. But we both work slower than we used to

I had a big problem with English Sparrows on our farm. For awhile, they were eating more chicken feed than the chickens. I set up "mist nets" draped above the feeders and across the gap between the wooden door and the chicken wire on the top, and caught *dozens* of the rotten things.

Fortunately, they are not native songbirds, so they (and starlings) are not protected by the Songbird act. I'd untangle them from the net, wring their neck, and feed them to the barn cats.

After awhile, they caught on... there were still too many on the farm, but they stayed out of the chicken pens! They aren't stupid! (Same thing when we started knocking nests down... we'd let them get a brood close to fledging, and then knock the whole nest down for the cats. They'd rebuild in the same place...we'd do it again. One pair tried 5 times one summer! But after two years of this, they stopped nesting in the open, and started nesting inside the barn eaves!)

The mist nets also stopped Robins and cedar waxwings from stripping our large strawberry bed. I draped them along the edges... the birds would land on the side of the garden snd walk towards the most visible berries. After a few got tangled (and released... they ARE protected), there was no more damage. They apparently spread the word... and for some reason, it never occurred to them to fly down and land in the middle of the bed!

Cary loaded up and left to begin cutting firewood this morning. He'll cut as much as he can, then load that up to bring home. He can only hold out to do maybe half a trailer load at a time if working alone. I figure this is going to take a long time to get everything cut, loaded, split, and stacked, before it's all done. He says he has all summer to work on it, though.

I'm doing laundry and have started making out my shopping list for the middle of the month. I need more gravy mixes to add to my stock, plus paper bowls, and I need 2 small stainless steel pots with lids. Something just big enough to open a can of veggies to cook. I have been putting off getting those, but when I cook on the wood stove, I don't have anything small enough just to cook one can of something. All I have are cast iron pots with lids, and they are way too large for that. All my other cookware is stainless steel but have plastic handles that will melt on the woodstove. I also need to replace underwear for myself. I opened a new pack of panties, so I need to replace those. I'm also back to buying ground beef to can up. When I use up 4 jars, I buy more ground beef and can it to replace what I use. All of these items will be added to my growing normal shopping list. At my local Walmart, they already have one whole aisle dedicated to canning this year. I'll be adding more sealing lids to my stock as well.

While in town tomorrow at attorney's visit, I'll stop in for a visit with Mom and take her this load of clothes for the thrift store. I'll bring back some of her canning jars that she wants me to have. She has so many, I'll pick up a few every time I visit. The only ones she wants to keep are her little jelly jars. That woman loves making all types of jelly! She also loves eating her hot biscuits with butter and jelly every morning, too. She's 82 yrs. old.

Amazon has all kinds of paper plate holders, I found them under paper plate holders reusable.

When I bought mine a few year ago I considered the wicker, but I chose the plastic ones because they are easier to keep clean. We use paper plates every day. I'm old and did my part for the environment for over 50 years.

DDIL found some really nice ones at Home Goods in big town. They're sorta fancy, and you can also use them with regular plates to snazzy up your dining table for dinner guests. I wouldn't mind having a few of those along with 2 tv trays.

DH had an appointment at the VA, regular check up. They checked his BP, its too high ant they said to take extra of his meds. They did a ct on his back, which always bothers him. He needs a new mattress. I went with him and stayed in the truck except I got lunch at a real mexican restaurant, well probably texmex. I always get nachos and these were very good, although they have given my indgestion that just won't seem to go away.

I'm still reading so I had something to entertain myself with. The only down side to reading so much is that I don't get very many steps in in a day. I'm on book 13 out of 21, I started with book 3. I'm rereading them so sometimes I remember some of what happened.

We press on here. First corn planting done today. Last planting of potatoes completed. Looks like we only lost one plum and 2 figs over the winter. That’s good news to us. We picked a handful of strawberries yesterday! Blueberries are loaded with blooms and blackberries and raspberries are leafing out. Greenhouse is packed. Redoing our communications plan and doing plan maintanence with our peeps. Stay safe and healthy everyone. Remember Who is your mighty tower!

I started therapy last week and have been faithful to do exercises at home between sessions. Tomorrow will be session three if therapist does not cancel due weather. She lives out of town.

Yesterday I picked up sticks out of the yard and then worked cleaning up stuff in the basement. Stuff I used to start last year's seeds!!! I have some cells filled with potting soil soaking in water and when they moisten, I'll plant peppers and tomatoes. Should have done the peppers several weeks ago. I'd planned to only do a few tomatoes, but I want to plant so many different varieties that I'll probably end up with a full garden again. Hopefully my back will hold out. This is the first time I've used the basement sink since I had new faucets installed. I'm so pleased with that project although it cost a bundle. I had shut offs installed on all lines to the basement sink and shower at the same time so if I have a leak, I don't have to shut off the whole house. So now nicest faucet in the house is in the basement and seldom used.

The day before I also managed to vacuum the living room and hallway and wash sheets and remake the bed. Making the bed about did my back in so that was the end of work for the day. It felt good to actually accomplish something after weeks of nothing done.

We're supposed to get rain/snow for the rest of the week through Saturday. Temps are supposed to stay above freezing for the most part, so we'll see what happens with accumulation. Only good part of snow this time of year is it doesn't stay around long. Amounts forecast range from 7" to 14" either way I will return to hibernation until it is done.

Today for us is a day of laziness, LOL! It is pouring rain again today through tomorrow morning. Nothing is getting done outside. Nothing to do inside, either. I've got all of my household chores done, already. A good day for reading here on the forum and looking online for more new recipes. I think it's my new hobby, and the ones I've found and made are really good. I've started a new cookbook made from all the new recipes I've found. As I make a new one, I add it if it's a keeper. Quick and simple is my motto when looking for new ones and made from ingredients that I already have in storage. I've had to add some ingredients to the pantry for some of them, but I have a good start on those, since my last shopping run. I'm considering my new recipe/cookbook to be a part of my overall food preps. Cary and I, both, like variety in our menus, so I don't want to be in a situation of having food fatigue. Thus, all the new recipes to go with all the recipes I already use on a regular basis from my food storage.

Tonight's menu will be Spicy Salsa Mac & Beef, pinto beans, and cornbread. I wanted to make a chocolate cake, but the weather is too bad. I don't bake anything when it's so damp. I can't get anything to rise good if I do.

Church last night had potato puff casserole and large lima beans with ham. The casserole was tasty as was the beans and ham, I only ate a partial cornbread muffin. Since they started the children's church there is a lot of disturbance when we get to our bible study. many parents are now joining the bible study since they bring their children. I guess the kinks will get worked out. The bible study was on love they neighbor.

I was going to go to walmart on Sunday afternoon, but I really didn't need anything, so we skipped it, I no longer look for something to want.

Church is having bingo night on Saturday. We have to bring a prizes for each person that plays, we stopped at our local DG and I got several prizes to add to the prize table.
