Uh oh. Cukes have bacterial fungus. I told daughter pull the infected. She doesn't want to. But there are other cukes further away and by cabin that are doing well. Anyone experience this?

I like raccoon too....I added that to my edit after you saw the original post.....

Fish, of course.
I've never tasted moose or elk. I have had pheasant once and it was AWESOME!!
Squirrel and rabbit lots of times....you should try using squirrel meat in a pasta salad......oh my GOSH!!! To die for!!

I AM CONSIDERING (oops!! didn't mean to yell!) raising some quail.....LATER. Got to see if things are going to be survivable first!!

Our water system comes from a water tower for this little area of the rural community via gravity flow, which should work fine. BUT it is pumped UP into the water tower by a pump on a generator......THERE could be the problem!! The lake is maybe a quarter mile from me, but it would be ALL UPHILL if I have to bring it up by hand.....and it is STEEP.....and I am 70 years old!!

My grandfather (Mom's dad), uncles, first cousins, Dad, oldest DS and Cary always loved to hunt and fish. Cary and DS still do. Grandfather loved to rabbit hunt. It was his favorite past time. Uncles and first cousins would go on long hunts out west and into the northwest to hunt pheasant, moose, and elk. They would bring their harvests back home, and the family would have big gatherings where it was all cooked and enjoyed. Raccoons, too, because they loved to coon hunt as well. We always had family fish fries after big fishing trips. Dad was a big fisherman and deer hunter. Cary and DS still hunt deer and squirrel. DS also is a big fisherman, and hunts wild hogs, too. DDIL just finished canning 4 pints of ground wild pork.

I was raised on my grandfather's(Mom's dad) farm, and eating fresh meat off the farm and from the wild was just natural.

Venison is the only ground meat we eat except for the pork DH grinds. I haven't bought ground beef in years. I use to pay more for grass fed beef before I was introduced to venison.

I guess I could eat some of those other meats mentioned but it's possible I'd gag.

The main reason DDIL wanted a pressure canner was so she could can all their wild ground pork and ground venison in their freezers. She's doing a great job of it, too.

I've thought about quail, but I don't think it's sustainable to raise them. I would have to buy commercial feed and incubate the eggs. I decided if I'm going to put that much time and effort in, I'll just raise Cornish cross chickens.

Got the Directv repaired, a mouse chewed through one of the cords. They have also been hell on telephone cords in the past too. Not much you can do living in the woods and not having a mouse from time to time. Its not good to be dependent on tv for entertainment. We only watch things on the inspiration channel, and a couple of other that have old tv shows. And it seems our selection of dvd's to watch is seriously lacking. I did turn in one of the "cable" boxes that was in my office. I've been weaning myself away from watching tv in my office for several months, it will save me $7 a month, not much but it adds up.

Dh is working on painting the water heater closet with kilz today, maybe the water heater will go in tomorrow, I'm not pushing it and I'm doing okay without hot water from it.

I've got to get the commodities put away.

Dh is enjoying his tomato sandwiches every day.

Cary went to pick up the lawn tractor this morning. A wire had broken that Cary couldn't see. Didn't take much to fix, so he went ahead and bought another chain for his chainsaw while he was there. He's storing those like a packrat, LOL.

Too hot to do anything outside, today. We're just resting up.

Slow and steady continues here ….

I‘m still working on my health and getting enough sleep nightly, daily walks, eating better, making time for daily reading, etc (I’m counting this as a prep!)

Today I bought a few items from an “online yard sale” a local lady does. She gets donations and lists them for sale (cheap) and all money goes towards her mission trips and outreach projects.
I got a brand new 50 ft soaker hose for hubby ($4), a great quality full size comforter ($3) which will be a “dog blanket” for our fur kids, and a Whirley pop popcorn machine which sells on Amazon for over $45 - it was $2. Yay!

I then ran into dollar general and topped off a few items we had used up (dish soap, dish sponges, generic Tylenol, generic Benadryl, shower gel, hydrogen peroxide, etc). I am still under the premiss of “use up one, replace with two”. I have a good amount of these items, but I want that to continue.

I also picked up a box of pasta and sauce. I do this every time I go into a store, even if it’s not on my list. It’s still cheap (can get both for under $3), and I just think it’s a good idea. I also picked up another thing of iodized salt. It was 70 cents. I remember when those were .33 cents.

The CarMax in the tubes I like using are now $1.45. They used to be $1.00. —— 8% inflation is crazy. It’s WAY more than that!

And, I don’t know if this idea will help anyone else or not, but I use my phone (google keep app) to keep a running list of items we use up and things to look for when I pop into a dollar general or dollar tree. I try to limit my store shopping so this helps me to stay organized. I keep lots of notes going in my phone - for dollar stores, one for groceries, one for my monthly budget, etc. This system works for me because I always have my phone with me.

I usually make my list on the walmart app but for some reason I've got no wifi in walmart. so I have to write it all down before I go to the store. I would use that app even if I was not getting something at walmart.
Maybe you could do a screenshot of your list before you go in. Might save you the trouble of writing it down.
I do almost all our grocery shopping online for pick-up now, so I keep running lists on my Walmart and Kroger apps.

I ordered some more LTS food in #10 cans from Walmart today. We already have a bunch but it was available so I ordered carrots, onions, sliced potatoes, shredded potatoes, strawberries, powdered cheese, and I tried to get more eggs but after I ordered they said that item was out.

DS and DIL's beautiful garden got decimated by groundhogs!!!! They caught the critters on a game cam they had set up. Destroyed about half of their garden. She was absolutely disgusted over it. She took photos on her phone, and showed them to us, today. Her cukes, part of her squash, green beans, some tomatoes, and potatoes all destroyed.
I am late to the party but 2 years ago we had ground hogs get into our cantelope. We trapped them and then released them in a kudzu patch across the river!

I’m not sure if it’s because I had taken a break from “The doom” and am now back, or if there is something else at play, but my senses are pinging to keep stocking. Just a sense on great unease. I plan to go pray on this!
Anyone else?

Yes. I was telling Cary this morning, after having another sleepless night, that I needed to take a break from all the doom, gloom, hair on fire kinda stuff for awhile. We've done all the major prepping we can do (feel lead to do), and from here on, it'll just be steady as she goes, little here, little there. I refuse to live in panic and fear under a rock somewhere scared of my own shadow. Spending more time in prayer is just what I need right now. Thank you for posting that, briches.

So it is incredibly hot for us also. Can usually only work til noon or so. We too are canning everything we can get our hands on and adding to our poultry. Is this the beginning of the end? Hard to say. But definitely harder times. We are finding that our local gas source is often without fuel and local choices for foods just aren't available. Praying for all of us.

With the looming electric bill we are about as prepped as we can be. I don't really need anything, my last trip to wm I did get a few things that are nice to have, but doing that is going to be less and less.

DH said he thinks we would feel better if we were running the central air, but I'm almost afraid to turn it on. Although I do agree, starting about 3:00 in the afternoon until about 6:00 its just miserable in the house. We just can't seem to quite shake the cough/runny nose issue we've had for about two weeks. But we have friends that have had it about as long as we have and they have their ac running and they are in worse shape than we are. I've never had anything but clear mucus, but my friend is coughing up yellow stuff. That sounds like an infection to me. The could go to the doctor easier than we can, its 140 mile round trip to urgent care at the VA for us. Our coughs are just about gone.

DH got the hot water heater installed yesterday, its not turned on but its in and hooked up.

We did get some tide pods in commodities from Monday, large cans of chicken, but not peanut butter, which is very unusual. I did order 4 jars from Vitacost though, so we'll be okay. We really don't eat it all the often or not regularly anyway.

I am sleeping like a rockstar each night so am thankful for that. I’m certainly not in panic mode, but it’s just a “general unease”. As I took my morning walk, I prayed on it and asked God to continue to “nudge me” in the direction and path I should continue to take.

I can’t even pinpoint the specific thread that made me uneasy, although it might have been RogerThornhills on the main page (signs he saw yesterday). Overall, it has seemed to be more quiet than usual. ???

I am headed to Walmart in a bit. I’ll be topping off some items …..

I don't want you to think that I was implying that you were panicking. I wasn't doing that. Some on the forum seem to live in a state of panic/doom, and it's those who I was referring to, and they can't understand why everyone else isn't doing the same.

As for me, I'm just hanging out here in the prep forums for awhile away from it all. Taking small walks, praying more, and enjoying working in our little gardens is what I'm concentrating on right now. Oh, we will continue to prep, but nothing major that we need to do. I would like to add garden space for next year, and get at least 1 more rain barrel, maybe this fall.

I'm with you SB, I will continue to prep in a small way, money is getting tight and I don't really need to buy big anymore. My last push was for pickled beets and I now have a decent supply, so just continuing to try to get organized. I really need help, but that's not coming, we are on our own. I'm praying more too.

I so understand about money being tight. I'm so thankful it didn't cost very much to get our lawn tractor fixed, yesterday. We're trying to build up our emergency fund more, since I have 2 different surgeries coming up in a few months. The dental surgery, and cataract surgery after that. I still have good insurance, but will still have to pay some out of pocket. I'll just continue to add a few items for food storage each time I do my regular grocery shopping twice a month, but no big ticket items.

I haven't been able to add any to my emergency fund, but I'm also not taking out of it. I thought I would be able to last month when the electric bill was less but now its more. DH is wanting to turn on the central ac, says he thinks we will feel better and he's probably right. But I'm afraid we'll get use to it and if there is a power outage we'll be back in the same boat but less acclimated.

I did finally lower the blind in my office so maybe it won't get so hot in here. I have a ton of stuff to more to be able to get an ac in the window and I don't see that happening any time soon.

ETA: we are moving my inversion table out of the bedroom to the cabin and next exercise thing to move over there is my treadmill that is in my office. But getting that out will be like an act of congress.

You probably would feel better if you were staying cooler, but you know more about your situation than I do. We've been having to use our ac more these last few days, given that our temps are over 100 degrees all this week. We normally do ok with just our floor fan, but dang that humidity!!!! I'm sure our electric bill will reflect it, too. No rain in sight, until maybe, Sunday to cool things down, either. We watered the gardens again this morning with more MiracleGro. Everything out there is still holding it's own. I saw more bees this morning.

Its not the we can't pay the bill, but I'm hardheaded about it, at some point we would not be able to pay it. But I'm thinking about it, DH wants to turn it on. I started to one day and it blew out tiped air, so I turned it off. Maybe we should turn it on and make sure it works.

Being prepared should take the panic away. That and prayer. I definitely feel something is going on, but I can only do so much, and I trust in the Lord. God is bigger than the Boogie Man!

My daughter is really stressed over the garden, but it's doing well. Worried about hard times.
We have to get propane tanks filled in August. Next month is home insurance, taxes, vehicle tags etc.
The things we seem to use a lot of are milk, butter, bread.
I can make bread. But the other two can't. The men drink a gallon a day. It's $5.00 a gallon now. I have been buying the box milk to put back for the boys, but need a lot more of it.
Every time you turn around, there is something that needs fixed or replaced. Being on a fixed income and son in law working part time till August, things are tight. We have the wedding Saturday, then the 4-h meet Sunday. Then I have to go to county 4-h meet end of the month. Trying to combine trips as much as possible. DH says has to run get a part, then treats himself out to eat. Aaagggghg just a tad worried about making do as things get worse.
My little cabin yard garden is doing well. Food is only one part of prepping. Always something else.
On the upside, I'm still sober and the boys are enjoying the pool!

Just got back from a trip to walmart (we don’t often go as one isn’t very close- has to be combined with other errands). I was again shocked at the rising prices.
I stuck to my list and did also pick up a “few extras” to tuck away.

I commented to the cashier on the prices continuing to climb, and she matter of factly told me that as of July 1, everything store wide (not just food) was increasing 10%. I wished I had asked her if it was just this store or not, but I’m guessing it’s not. So take that FWIW. (Eastern VA)

My niece and I gave a baby shower for my daughter. She did not need a lot of stuff. They had packed away most of the big items from their first born. I never understood young mothers that get rid of everything and then 2-3 years later, they need baby equipment again. But that is a different rabbit trail. She had a small nice shower. She received some money also to fill in any holes. She plans to breast feed again. Since she works from home, she should be able to do it longer. She already has clothe diapers from her first child. But I am sure she will use some disposable too. She thinks they are all set. Now if the world will just hold together till the baby gets here. I will be so glad to have the birth over and them home.

Hubby and I gave blood yesterday. He gives pretty regular. Yesterday was the first time I donated, but i will keep doing it with him.

I tried a recipe i found in Backwoods Home magazine. It was Amish coleslaw. You can it in pint jars. We liked it drained with just a little mayo added. The article said it was good in tacos too. It is in a sugar and vinegar syrup with celery and mustard seeds. Then water bath for 15 minutes. This will give use another vegetable canned. Variety is the key to avoiding food fatigue. Now I need to buy a couple cabbages from our Mennonite friends and can some more.

The gardens are doing fair. The heat and humidity is awful. We have a chance of rain Sunday and then it will be a little cooler. But just back to normal temperatures. But that sure beats high humidity and almost 100*.

I have eggs galore. Yesterday I cooked up a bunch and fed the dog and gave a bunch to the chickens. I have given some away too. But feeding them back helps on the feed bill. They have been out foraging every day so i only give them a little grain.

I better get busy. Stay cool and hydrated

I've been complaining about not having any bees of any kind this year. Now, there are a few, but not like in years past. I did finally spot 2 honeybees, but mostly sweat bees and bumblebees. We've got plenty of gnats, so if ya'll need some, just holler. I'm allergic to most bees, so I do have to keep my eyes out for them each year.

I gathered more green bell peppers and 2 cucumbers from the gardens this morning, while Cary was cutting more firewood. Dumped a bucket of scraps into the new compost bin. It's coming along rather nicely for a compost bin, LOL.....Also. doing a bit of house cleaning this morning. Opened a new set of bedsheets, so I washed them to hang on the clothesline.

Going to be another hot, humid one today. Heat index was 109, yesterday with 100 for the high temp. Clouds keep bubbling up, but no rain. Just a hot haze over everything. We're having to turn on the window ac unit each afternoon to cool the house down while I cook. We have one window unit in the laundry room that is at the far end of our house. It's open into the rest of the house, because of the open floor plan. That one unit blows through the whole house, keeping it nice and cool when we have to use it. I was out in the heat late yesterday afternoon just for a few minutes to look at the pole beans on the fence. The sun was so hot, it gave me a headache.

Its comfortable in the house temp wise, and the ac has not kicked on yet. I covered a window yesterday in the mud room, its gets extremely hot in there, maybe that will help. And today I asked DH to turn on the hot water heater. Between having to replace the old one and today its been about 10 with no hot water heater on. Its set at 90 degrees, I was thinking 100 but that's what DH set it at so we'll see how hot it gets.

I may do a small shipping order from walmart.com or not. DH has been using a lot of miracle whip with his tomato sandwiches, so I want him to have plenty of that. But then again i have several jars in the pantry.

Pantry moths got into a box of jiffy mix, I need to clean that up.

I did a little bit of declutering in my office last night, will do some more today.

Dh got the second shelving unit up in the walk in closet, I've got organizing to do in there too.

We got our second batch of commodities this morning. There was peanut butter in the two boxes. so that gives us 6 jars, 4 that I ordered and two from commodities today. We don't actually eat a lot of PB. but its nice to know its there.

I used a can of ground meat last night to make spaghetti sauce last night. DH ate it right up, if he doesn't know its canned he can't taste the difference. There was a big hunk of fat in the bottom of the can and that goes to the dog.

So Nomifyle, is that ground beef that you canned at home?
Or did you buy it somewhere??
